The car ride to school was silent, everyone caught up in their own thoughts. Well, and Edward with everyone's. Alice kept glancing at me with a concerned expression on her face. I tried to smile at her reassuringly, despite knowing that Jasper could probably sense my anxiety and Alice could read it written on my face. She squeezed my hand gently, the coldness of her hand against mine relaxing me some. As we pulled up to the school and stepped out, I could feel my heart beating faster in my chest.
Alice linked her arm through mine, gave me an encouraging smile and led me towards my first class of the day, English. As we reached the doorway of the classroom I turned to say goodbye but to my surprise she walked past me, gently tugging me behind her. She stopped once she got to the back of the classroom, pulled the chair out next to her and indicated that I sit down. My heart fluttered within my chest at the sweet gesture and I saw her hiding a smile as she sat down, causing my cheeks to redden in embarrassment.
This class and the classes up until lunch passed by pretty uneventfully, with Alice being in all of them keeping me company. As we walked into the lunchroom, Alice skipped off to go sit down at the table with her siblings whilst I go and get food.
As I'm stood in line waiting to be served my eyes wander around the lunchroom, taking in the table full of cheerleaders and jocks sat around the centre table making the most noise.
My eyes flash to Alice's as they gaze adoringly into my own. I sigh happily at the love reflected back in her own from across the room and I smother a wide happy grin and turn my eyes elsewhere. As my mind wanders caught up in watching how they interact with each other I feel a sharp jab in my shoulder and turn around, startled.
"Hey, stop staring at my friends, freak!" Spat Lauren.
"Yeah freak stop it!" Chimed in Jessica, her high fake voice ringing in my ears causing a headache to throb at the back of my head.
I mentally rolled my eyes and turned back around, finally being able to grab some food and pay. Just as I start walking towards my siblings and Alice I feel a hard shove on my back that sends me flying to the floor. As pain flares up my arm, I hear laughter ring around the room then silence as a sudden snarl echoes around the room. Alice's eyes are pitch black as she flies towards Lauren with rage in her coal black eyes.
Jasper grabs her just in time to stop her from doing some serious damage and takes her swiftly out of the room, her angry sad eyes gazing shamefully into my own before they both disappear from sight. I sigh unhappily as Rosalie glares at Lauren after helping me up and to the table safely.
The bell rings and I groan loudly. Two hours of Gym great, what a lovely ending to the day. I drag my feet to the gym block, just wishing for the day to end already.
Ughhhhh. I groan happily as Alice's fingers dance lightly on my back, taking all the tension and stress away with each stroke of her fingers. She giggled, rolling her eyes at me in amusement as I duck my head underneath the quilt to hide the bright red blush staining my cheeks. We sat in companionable silence for a little while until I reluctantly sat up and turned to face her.
"Alice? Why did that wolf attack you? We weren't doing anything wrong"
"Well Bella, the Quilette wolves are our mortal enemies. We hate each other, it's always tense when we're around each other, even with the stupid treaty. The reason though, that the wolf, who is called Jacob Black, tried to attack me is that he thought I was preparing to bite you." Alice bit her lip, looking sorrowfully at the floor.
"Alice! I know you would never do that, you're not a monster you're a beautiful kind warm-hearted loving person who I adore" I said, outraged that anyone could ever look at her and see her as anything other than how I saw her. "What's it to him anyway?"
"Well, apparently Edward heard in his thoughts that Jacob believes you are his imprint. And before you ask, an imprint is where a wolf locks eyes on there soulmate and a magnetic reaction happens which binds the couple together forever." Alice hisses softly, clearly not liking the thought of me being Jacobs mate, no more than I did.
"I can't be his mate though Alice, I'm not even attracted to guys at all. I'm gay. So how can he have imprinted on me? It's pretty much impossible when I'm no-where near attracted to the guy. Plus, after how he acted at the beach the other day I don't want to be anywhere near him anyway."
"I know that, and so does everyone else, even the other wolves, bar Jacob Black. Jasper was watching his emotions closely the whole time and he claims Jacob felt a huge surge of lust towards you, when he first looked at you but other than that no imprint. Edward says there's no real feelings in his thoughts, he just fancies the pants off you and with his own huge ego anyway it is what leads Jacob to think he has imprinted on you. His Alpha, Sam Uley knows he hasn't, if Jacob had indeed imprinted on you every last wolf there would've fought to the death to take you home, including Jacob yet he didn't."
After a minute or two of silence I suddenly felt Alice tense up next to me and I glanced over, silently inquiring with my eyes what was wrong.
"What did you mean by that last comment Bella? You never told me you'd seen him at the beach. Wait, please don't tell me you went down to La Push reservation? Alice eyes were dark and she let out a small hiss.
"Um... yes? Angela had texted me saying that they were all going to the beach and asked me if I wanted to go and I agreed. I didn't see what the big deal was then but I guess now I understand why you're a bit freaked out. We were just chilling then Jacob came over trying to flirt with me but I ignored him and walked off down the beach to just breathe and think about things. He followed me, kept trying to talk to me but I told him I wasn't interested. The wind blew my hair the other way and he must've smelt your scent on me because he started shaking asking why I was hanging around with a bunch of freaks. He grabbed my arm and snarled then suddenly I'm on the floor and two guys are dragging him away into the woods. After that I left.
As I finished speaking, Alice reached over and gently lifted the sleeve of my t-shirt up, revealing a hand-shaped bruise that I previously hadn't noticed. She let go off me then backed away a few paces, closed her eyes and snarled loudly.
"I'LL KILL THAT FILTHY MONGREL. How dare he touch you! Filthy dog!" Alice hissed out, her eyes pitch black and hands curled tightly at her sides.
After seeing my gaping mouth, open in shock she made a visible effort to calm herself down. Trying not to scare me I presumed. After a few minutes of strained silence, with me watching her warily to see what would happen next, she finally opened her eyes, now a dark butterscotch colour.
She threw a strained smile my way, keeping her eyes pointedly away from my arm. I got up and went over to her slowly, rubbing her back and pulling her into me, trying my best to soothe her. She was tense for a minute or so then wrapped her arms around me, burying her nose in my chest, breathing deeply. She pulled away sometime later, looking a lot better.
"I'm going to go hunt if you don't mind, I'm feeling a little thirsty and in the mood to break down a few trees, maybe sparr with Emmett a little. It'll help." Alice stated softly.
"Oh okay. Well, be safe and I'll miss you." I yawned softly, crawling back into bed, feeling suddenly exhausted by the days events. She gently stroked my cheek then placed her cool lips on my forehead.
"Sleep well my beautiful Bella, I'll be back before you know it."
And I knew nothing more as sleep grabbed me and pulled me under.
