Realm of Lothlorien
Four days past when Lord Elrond said I would travel to Lothlorien. During that time, preparation had been made and a selected few would join this journey. Never before had I left Rivendell's borders. Was I scared? Well in fact I was. There were stories about what creatures outside the safety of the elves. Lord Elrond told me of the Dragon under the Mountain and Sauron. That alone made me shivered with fear. Courage was not my strongest. I sighed heavily when the day finally came.
I dressed in a long blue dress, fitted for traveling with a silver cloak and a full cowl. Strapping my quiver over my shoulder, equipped with my bows and arrows, and my daggers on my hips. After I readied myself, I turned to the mirror, stunned by my reflection, for I truly appeared to be a Lady of Rivendell. My ebony hair cascaded down my cloak, contrasted against my clothing and forced my blues irises out. When I turned away, my heart raced with anticipation. I swallowed hard for I realized this could be a test of my new skills. Training was easy and now, reality awaited with claws and teeth. If there was to be a situation that I had to defend myself... well, last time, it did not end well.
I braced myself for the enviable, and left the safety of my room. As I made my way to the front entrance, I said my goodbyes to whoever I past by. Once I reached the front gates, my company readied their horses. From behind, elves came to bid us farewell; amid them was Lord Elrond. Amongst my company there were: Arwen, Aragorn and the twins. Relieved filled me to the sight of the twins and Aragorn. Their skill would be needed if all fails. To my surprise, I noticed Glorfindel amongst the company. He turned with a smile which I offered in return.
As I glanced around there was a rider for every horse. Curious, who would I ride with? Would it be the twins? Glorfindel? Would Arwen be put off if I travel with Aragorn? Arwen suddenly turned from her horse and smiled warmly at me. My eyes met Arwen who gently stroked her mare's neck. "Ready for the journey, Amelia?"
I shrugged nonchalantly and I managed to say, "Yes."
She became apprehensive and must have notice the settle shakiness in my voice, "Do not fear, there are many warriors amongst us."
"Of course there are, have faith my dear Amelia." Elladan chided with a mocked prideful tone and with his never failing smile. He mounted his horse with ease. Once he was comfortable, he ushered his horse to the head of the group.
I chuckled to myself when I heard Aragorn approach from be behind. When I turned, my eyes widen when Aragorn brought forth a black mare. The horse was tall and muscular, and almost had me quiver with nervousness. He gave me the reins, which I forced me to gaze at him questioningly, "This is Nerra. A gift from Lord Elrond."
My mouth dropped in surprise as my eyes jumped to Nerra and then swiftly over my shoulder. My eyes found Lord Elrond on top of the stairs and no doubt he heard our conversation. This was the foal that was born a year and a half ago. A small smile formed on his thin lips and he nodded his head. I was touched by his generosity. This horse was my gift and I found myself smiling widely. Nerra knicker, bumped her head against my shoulder. Her long mane cascaded down one side of the neck and elegantly waved. There was no marks on her; she was a pure black majestic horse, tall and regal.
Aragorn assisted me to mount Nerra and my stomach twisted once I was on top, followed by excitement. This might not be so bad... The company mounted their horse, waited on Lord Elrond's permission. The Lord took a step forward, moved his hand across his chest and murmured, "Safe travels."
His eyes landed on Arwen and I saw nothing but love for his daughter. Concern swelled in his eyes and then he glanced at me. In his orbs, there was something I've never seen before; A tenderness that I was neglected by my own father. A love for a child.
When it was time to leave, all turned their horses toward the entrance and started to leave the safety of this estate. Without hesitation, I followed and took my position in the middle of the company next to Aragorn and Arwen. Elladan and Glorfindel led the way while Elrohir and the other two elves took the back. As we reached to the edges of the Estate, the company made haste. We rode until night fell, untainted by anything dangerous. I was amazed by this world and found myself glanced around. The horses panted wearily and Glorfindel suggested that we give time for the horses to recover.
It was dark and the trees moved against the soft wind. My sensitive ears listened intently around me. Nothing but bugs and distance howls of wolves rang in my ears. The others were not concerned and assured me that the wolves were far off. I nudged Nerra closer to a calm river where she drank eagerly. Swiftly and somewhat awkwardly, I dismounted... more like stumbled off. From behind, I heard Elladan's chuckled but he hid behind his horse to avoid my poison glare.
I turned back to Nerra who I caressed her neck before I randomly inquired, "Do you know the lady Galadriel well?"
Next to me was Elrohir who looked to me with a arched brow and answered slowly, "Of course, she's our grandmother."
My eyes widened with surprise but Elrohir expression said nothing but 'you should already know.' That was truly unexpected. I knew elves were immortal but that was just unnatural. My eyebrows furrowed together in confusion as I mumbled in coherent sentences, "Grandmother? Truly? She looks too young to be a grandmother. How is that possible?"
Elrohir looked to me again, cocked an eyebrows as he hestiantly asked, "Must I tell you how children are born?"
I noticed he shifted uncomfortable which made his horse a bit agitated. This only made Elladan chuckle from the other side. Luckily for him, he did not see my glare, yet again. I blushed and realized my question came out wrong. Sometimes I forget that even though we spoke the same language, it was like we spoke in two tongues. Swiftly I shook my head and I continued, "I did not meant that. She looks very… young."
"Do you not know? Elves have immortality, we do not age like men." Glorfindel said from a distance, nearby Arwen. I looked over my horse where he stood with a single eyebrow rose skeptically.
"I do, but… Its strange." I said, I struggled to find my words.
"There nothing strange about it." Elrohir answered gently and ended that conversation. Well of course not! They can have great-great-great-great-great grand children and still look twenty. Of course there's nothing strange about it. "Elves never age."
After the long journey, we finally entered to the northern realm of Lothlorien. We were swiftly greeted by elves that guarded the forest, led by the marchwarden Haldir. To my surprise, majority of them where golden heads, which let me to believe perhaps one of them, could be my mysterious dream elf. Or perhaps, my mysterious stranger was a figure of my imagination. I would go with the second explanation. As I waited, the twins spoke to Haldir with such swift tongues that made my my race with delayed translations.
Haldir nodded his nod in respect to the twins, as his eyes instantly jumped to mine. His blue eyes were deep and guarded, much like Erestor or Lord Elrond, nothing would surpass those observant orbs. Shifted uncomfortably on Nerra due to Haldir's penetrating eyes, he spoke in the common tongue, "Welcome, Lady Amelia. The lady of this forest is expecting you."
Without so much of a second word, he turned on his heels and ordered his companions to march for Lothlorien. I grimaced at Haldir's backside. Intense elf.
With a sigh, I urged Nerra to follow behind the Marchwarden as the company went deeper into the enchanting forest. It was additional two day journey into the vast forest, to come face to face to a long rope: entering into Lothlorien. My lips parted in dismay for I would have to embarrass myself up this robe with not by a dress.
After my- interesting- climb up to the platform, my mouth dropped to the beauty and magnificence of Lothlorien. Elladan chuckled when my jaw dropped in awe. We were led up a spiral staircase that twirled around a large tree. At a large platform was an open hall connected to another set of stairs where the Lady and Lord stood. The group filed in and stood in front them. On either side of me were Aragorn and Glorfindel. My eyes first found Lady Galadriel who returned the gaze. Her beauty always took my breath away. Next to her, was Lord Celeborn. Lord Celeborn stepped forward with his hands opened wide toward his grandchildren and spoke in elvish. "Welcome, my heart is joyed to see you again."
The three bowed their heads in an elvish gesture. I grinned at myself for I actually understood what Lord Celeborn said. Finally something paid off. Lord Celeborn stepped forward and kissed Arwen's forehead. He whispered into her ear something that I could not hear. She smiled and nodded. As he passed by the twin, they again bowed. Soon after, his eyes moved to Glorfindel who stood next to Elladan, "Glorfindel of Rivendell, welcome."
Glorfindel bowed his head respectfully when his named by Lord Celeborn. His blues eyes found Lord Celeborn and held respect for his kin, "Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel, your welcome warms my heart."
I noticed Lady Galadriel smiled gently at him. Finally Lord Celeborn came to me and suddenly, I felt bashful. I dropped my eyes and hoped he'll pass me. Unfortunately, I saw his boot stop in front of me. I felt his eyes on me. From the silence, I heard him inquired softly in the common tongue, "Lady Amelia, would you not look at me?"
I pursed my lips for I could not say no. I slowly looked up at him. With a hard swallow, he stared into my eyes as if he searched for something. The older elves always searched for something in my eyes. "I heard much about you from my lady…"
My eyes jumped to Lady Galadriel who simply smiled and I hesitantly looked back at the lord. To test myself, I said in elvish, "I hoped nothing terrible."
That probably wasn't a proper response. Aragorn did squeeze my hand to remind me whom I spoke to. However it was already out. My diplomatic skill could use more work. Rivendell did have its formalities but here, I noticed those formalities were intensified. I bite my lip when his eyebrows furrowed. Swiftly I saved myself, "Forgive me, I meant nothing by it."
Celeborn responded neutrally, no spite lingered in his tone, "No, indeed not."
He moved onto Aragorn who bowed his head. Celeborn spoke, "Aragorn son of Arathorn, welcome."
After all were greeted formally, Lord Celeborn stood next to Lady Galadriel again, "You will find rest here."
While Lord Celeborn spoke to all, my attention was drawn to the Lady Galadriel. Locked and pulled into a trance with such intensity would almost force me to break away. The deep corners of my mind were pried by her thoughts; grew deeper until I felt unraveled. I know why you're here…. Her voice echoed in my mind. Hesitantly, I nodded my head.
The trance was shattered when Lord Celeborn requested two elf maidens tend to our needs. From an arched entrance emerged two graceful maidens with hair that was kissed by the sun light. They spoke softly before they led the others down a narrow path but I remained, hesitant to leave. When I looked to Lady Galadriel, she nodded her head for to follow and I turned away forlorn. Down a windy path toward what would be our chambers. I strode into my room, curious of my surroundings. My chambers was crafted on the side of a tree, light colored platform and vine ceiling. Sighed, I collapsed onto the bed, relaxed but found no rest this night.
The following morning, two elves attended to my care, despite my protest. They slip on an elegant white gown, full of designs and trailed on the ground. The sleeves surpassed my fingertips and the bodice hugged my slender shape. My long ebony locks flowed freely down my back. Arwen later joined Aragorn for a stroll through the gardens and the twins were no where to be found. Alone in my room, my thoughts troubled me. They were too twisted to endure in the silence. As I bit my lip thoughtfully, I decided to explore this enchanted place. I walked along a path until I reached a spiral staircase up a large tree. Upon the platform, several elves past me in a rush but maintain such gracefulness. I furrowed in curiosity to why were all the elves in such a hurry. They carried food and drinks in their hands. It was barely noon and my stomach was empty. To see all this food, it made my stomach growl.
I moaned internally with desire but then thought better of it. Best not make myself a thief by snatching one sweet breads from the trays. As I continued on my way, I past by archways and designs followed on a path. Curious, I walked along and memorized by the beauty. I came to a small clearing where a pond filled with flower buds and greenery floating on the surface. My mind swiftly wondered to the first in the Hidden Pass, followed by my death.
I gasped and turned swiftly away from the pond. Must everything remain me of what I did not want to remember? I shook my head swiftly, casting away those thoughts. Suddenly disturbed, I turned to retreat back to my room, lost all desire to explore to be intervened by Elladan. Smiling at me with a arched eyebrow, he declared "There you are. I was searching you, my dear lady."
"Amelia." I corrected, with a slight edge in my voice. When had Elladan address me so formally?
The corners of his lips rose up into a large smile which only made my scowl. Chuckled to my serious expression, Elladan explained, "We are in Lothlorien. Formalities are required."
I rolled my eyes but did not complain. However my eyes narrowed when he impishly smiled at me. Cautiously, I accused, "You're up to something, my lord."
"Why think of me in such a way?" He acted hurt and placed his hand on his chest. My stomach twisted in hunger that only made me crankier. When I tried to bypass him, he blocked me with his arm outstretched.
"Your actions in the past says so." I reminded him, my voice thickened.
He smiled widely, "Indeed but that never stopped you from following. Come, the others are waiting."
I blinked and looked at him dumbfounded. Now he definitely caught my attention, "Waiting for what?"
"For the feast."
"There's a feast?" I repeated and my stomach growled to my dismay but I ignored it. My hands went over my stomach, "Feast as in food?"
He laughed when he saw where my hands went and offered his arm to escort, "Of course, the lord and lady always host a feast when their grandchildren come to Lothlorien."
Well that certainly sparked my interest considered my stomach demanded food. I took his arm and he led up me up to the high peak of a grand tree. A large platform was at the same height of the high branches, wheeled around by leaves. Large glass designed to look like leaves, covered the top with the high sun shined through. Loose branches decorated the top. A ballroom, I suspected but it was unlike anything I've ever seen before. It was almost as if everything glowed.
At the back of the ballroom, was the large table that curved like a crescent moon. Where I assumed the nobles sat at. Across the platform, there were long tables filed out, prepped for feast. In the far corner was a orchestra that played a soft tune. Elves entered the ballroom from different arched entrances with an escort and found their chair. Suddenly, laughter and soft chatter filled my ears.
The feast had yet to began. No food or drinks were served. Elladan led me deeper into the ballroom as I tried not to bump into anyone. I received many glanced from elves as they whispered about who I was. Some suspected I was Elladan's betrothal because he took my hand. Since Elladan was not affected by their speculation, so then I refused to let them bother me.
When we passed an empty chair, I attempted to sit but Elladan immediately prevented me, "Not here."
I frowned but listened. He led me toward the far back where the crescent table was. The lord and Lady sat at the center with Arwen and Elrohir was on either side of them. My breath left me to the sight of Arwen. She wore an elegant royal blue dress, fit for royalty. The lady was in her usually white gown that shimmered against the faint sunlight. Aragorn sat next to Arwen and they delicately entwined their fingers. Elrohir spoke eagerly with a young elf maiden. A charmer, I thought. A chair was empty next to Aragorn.
When I realized that one was reserved for me, I hesitantly whispered to Elladan, "Are you sure I should sit at the this table. I'm not their grandchild."
He leaned in and whispered into my ear, "Decease your coy nature, my dear Amelia."
Hesitantly I sat, glanced around the room with modest eyes. Eventually, my gazed was drawn to Lord Celeborn who stood up. "This day we celebrate the arrival of our grandchildren. May their days be blessed with joy and peace. Let us feast and be merry."
After his speech, the music started again in a soft beat and servants brought out food served on a platter and drinks. My silver goblet was filled with wine that had a sweet aroma. Since I've never drunk wine before, I didn't know what to expect. Elladan leaned over and whisper, "Drink slowly, elvish wine was meant to be relished."
I took that into consideration as I sipped on the wine cautiously. My eyes widened in surprise to the flavor of fruit and strong alcohol. A shiver went down my spine and I made a frown to subdue it. Elladan suppressed a chuckle at my expense. Aragorn smirked and said, "How does it taste?"
It took me a moment to recover from the strong after taste. I set down the goblet and breathe heavily. "Good but strong."
My answer earned me a giggle from Arwen who covered her mouth with her hand. Elrohir spoke up from the other side, "You believe the wine to be strong, you ought to taste Mirkwood wine."
I looked at him curiously, "Mirkwood?..." I whispered in thought for the name seemed familiar. My mind ran with images of ideas for that location when I suddenly remembered the forest on the map from the studies in Rivendell, "Oh of course, the Woodland Realm."
"Lord Elrond informed me you study medicine under him." Lord Celeborn suddenly mentioned when a goblet of wine in his hand. His deep ancient eyes laid on me for conformation.
My cheeks suddenly became rosy. When did Lord Elrond told him such things of me? Lady Galadriel followed her husband's gaze toward me and smiled encouragingly. I chewed on a piece of fruit and swiftly swallowed it. Bashfully, I answered, "Yes, Lord Elrond is training me in medicine to become an apprentice. Its quite intense."
"That is quite a feat you've chosen." He declared with a nod of respect.
I felt my cheek burn from the gesture but I returned a shy grin before I looked away. Not long after Arwen said softly, "Lady Amelia is quite skilled in medicine and also took a liking to the bow."
I blushed to the attention I received. "Yes, its… fun."
Elladan chuckled to my response. The thoughts about archery led me to search for Glorfindel who struck up a conversation with a Haldir. Despite his rejection for his feelings, I often wondered... entertained the idea of what if. His long hair cascaded down his backside, his hand moved with the movement of his mouth. My eyes jumped to Haldir who nodded thoughtfully, intrigued. It was difficult to hear over the loud chatter. I turned away before I got caught staring and sipped my wine.
I must say the sweet bread was delicious. Very different compared to Rivendell's food. It was full of cream. At least here, Lord Elrond can not watch what I eat. Swiftly I reached for another sweet bread.
"Amelia, you ought to eat vegetables." Elladan whispered to me, more for my benefit. Frowned, I sighed and reached out for some vegetables and grimaced as I ate while I looked longing on the sweet delicacies. I suppose not...
Several elves, who I assumed where nobles of some sorts, approached the table and made their welcomes to the grandchild. When they glance at me curiously, I would simply nod politely without so much of word for I feared my intoxication would influence my tongue. Laughter and music filled the room with joy and merry. It wasn't until the sun started to fall when I realized how late it was. Slowly my back relaxed more into the chair improperly and my vision began to fade. Elves and objects became disorientated while everything else swirled like a wheel.
"I think you ought to return to your room. You are exhausted." Elladan whispered into my ear, suddenly concerned. Slowly I looked to him, attempted to focus my dizzy eyes on the contours of his face. Hesitantly, I nodded and shakily rose from my chair. My hand shot up to my face as my head worsened. Black spots appeared in my vision. Was elvish wine that intoxicated? I hardly drink half of the cup!
My legs weakened, almost buckling but I grasped the back of the chair for support. Elladan was to jump to his feet when I reassured him, "I am well, Elladan. I will be returning to my chambers."
Before Elladan could counteract, an elf maiden appeared at my side. "I'll escort her, my lord." She interrupted, gently placed a hand on my forearm. Elladan nodded but felt unsettled in his chair. "Come my lady, your room is not far." She spoke softly as she walked by my side slowly out from the ballroom. When we came to the stairs, my knees almost buckled beneath me. The elf wrapped her arm beneath mine, almost lifted me to my feet. Half dragged down the stairs, I was surprised by the small elleth's strength but I blushed when she inquired, "How much wine did you consume?"
There was a motherly scold in her tone. Hesitantly, I answered. "Several sips from the goblet."
"Strange. I've seen elves drunk on two full cups." She commented more to herself. I frowned to her statement, lost in my thoughts. Was the void calling for me? I wondered. Upon entering my room, the corners turned black and a final spin occurred. Immediately I collapsed into the arms of the maiden who let out a fear gasp. Before my vision blackened, I vaguely heard her cry, "My lady!"
My eyes snapped open in a clearing of wheeled fog. I groaned internally to this sight of this place. It simply confused me, however, this time it was different. The atmosphere was grounded, no ghost or shifted sceneries. Slowly I walked deeper into the clearing until a field of wild red flowers emerged in front of me. Surprise by such beauty, a smile broke out as I leaned in to softly brush my fingers against the red petals. It was light, secured and open, unlike my previous locations were full of darkness and disarray. Suddenly, in the distance, I heard a soft melody of music that called for me. Drawn like a insect to a light, I followed it through the field.
Tall plants were pushed aside of my view and there in the middle of a small clearing, surrounded by red flowers and a single tall windy tree with cascading branches was Nalana. A vision of serenity and peace. She sat on a stool beside the tree, well protected by bloomed leaves. Her fingers grazed swiftly across the harp strings, elicited gentle music that calmed my confused mind. My heavy heart was lifted and for once, I was at peace.
Surprised, there was another stool next to her. My eyes lingered away from Nalana and I turned in place to observe the field of flowers. Despite it beauty, It bewildered me to come to such a place. Lord Elrond had said her mind was connected to me. Thus... she could summon me when she chooses? I was disconnected from my elven body, roamed this void as a ghost myself? Creepy...
"Amelia." I heard from behind, which made me jump in surprise. Swiftly turning, Nalana stared at me with her blue eyes and her music stopped. Not a single sound dared be uttered nor the feel of wind. It was completely still. Nalana accessed me carefully, sought for something... Then she gestured her hand toward the empty stool and offered gently, "Come and sit. Time is eternal but all thing must come to past."
I arched an eyebrow to her cryptic talk but slowly started for the stool. "That makes no sense."
Her lip twitched to a secret smile but faded quickly, it was probably something I was not meant to see. "Time is eternal. All thing moves regardless of the void but it also wanes. Much must come to past. We will find counsel with each other." She explained, her voice serene and ancient but it hardly helped my to decrypt her statement.
"I see." I said slowly, not truly understanding. My guard came up, and my eyes never wavered from her ever watchful ones. "What is it you wish to discuss."
Her eyes grew determined and the feel of this void shifted. "Your charge."
I frowned, my muscles tightened with tension as I shifted uncomfortable on the stool and countered, "I believe you mean your change?"
She slowly shook her head, her eyes never broke away. For a moment, all determination faded and she became remorseful. The very look clawed at my heart for a such an expression didn't seem right on her. "Which has been handed down to you…."
My hands tightened into a fist. The memories of our first encounter came back to me with bitterness and my heart hardened. I spoke in a harsh whisper, "I don't want your burdens."
"Wanted or not, it is yours." She pressed her eyes never falter from mine. "You are here... In this world for one purpose. To aid against the enemy."
"Its mine because you failed at it." I resorted swiftly, lost my patience and intended to make my point. Nalana grew silent and grim. My words struck her where I knew it hurt most. Even a spirit in the Void had feelings. She was no more than a small fragment of herself that was embedded into my mind. "I will not carry your burdens..."
"Denial is not good company to keep, Amelia." She warned, her voice strengthen in reprimand. Before I could counter, I felt myself drift away from the void...
"Lady Amelia?" The voice woke me up from my sleep. Startled, and frantic, my eyes searched for Nalana to only rest upon The elf maiden who aided me the night before. She arched a worried eyebrow at me as she rested a hand on my shoulder. "My lady, forgive me. I did not wish to rouse you from your slumber. My lady Galadriel requests your presence at this hour."
Swallowed a hard lump in my voice, I nodded for I feared my voice would be another but a pitiful croak. I rose from the bed, dressed in a lavender gown which I believed the elf maiden changed me into. A rosy color grazed my cheeks to that thought but I disregarded that thought for elves were not so modest. I stood up and the elf maiden turned to led me to the lady. As I cross the threshold, I heard Nalana's voice.
You have a charge. You will see.
Swiftly I stopped in my tracks and turned to find the source of the voice. For a moment, I actually believed she stood next to me for her essence filled me. I turned in place, hoped to find her ghostly appearance behind a tree of some sort but I was left alone with the elf staring at me strangely. "My lady?"
I looked at her and felt slightly embarrassed. With a tight swallow, I nodded at the elf and I tried to ignore Nalana's cryptic voice in my head. In this hour, her whispers lingered to the point of madness. Her warnings of my denial were endless. As I walked, I often looked over my shoulder for I expected Nalana to be there. I felt her here as if she was in physical form…
We arrived to a small glass table inspired detail to match tree roots. Glass large leaves covered from the bright sun on the high tree where the Lady Galadriel sat waiting. A bowl of fruit was set in the middle of the table. Musicians played a soft tune on the harp and flute. It was a private area, far from the curious eyes of Lothlorien elves. I felt relieved that this would be a private conversation. The elf maiden stopped before the entrance and bowed her head. I caught the eyes of Lady Galadriel as she gesture her hand to sit next to her. With a shy glance at the elf maiden who kept her eyes down, I walked past her and under the arch entrance.
Lady Galadriel said softly, "Sit, young one."
Nerves suddenly filled me with unwanted anticipation. When I sat, her blue eyes accessed me closely to find all my hidden secrets. Lady Galadriel's demeanor was unlike any other. I felt her power swimming in her veins; Her authority demanded respect. Locked to her eyes unable to turn away, I swallowed hard and my fingers fidgeted under the table. With a instant, Lady Galadriel dropped her eyes from me and offered a delicate smile, "Please, help yourself."
I looked back at the fruit and found my mouth water. Without hesitation, I snatched green grapes and a few raspberries eager to decease the sudden sensation of hunger. The fruit overwhelmed my tastebuds with fresh favor. Hesitantly, I inquired, "I assume Lord Elrond explained why he sent me here?"
Lady Galadriel chewed on her last cherry and started at me, amused be my abruptness. I took the time to continue, "He believed you would know… because you are wise."
This earned me a laugh as she straightened herself and obviously amused. "Not even the wisest cans not always tell."
Suddenly I became serious and hoped for a better answer. I looked down at my uneaten grapes and ripped a grape from the vine. It plopped into my mouth and chewed gently on it. For some reason, I found myself tried to mimic Lady Galadriel elegant movements. She walked with poise and was a vessel of wisdom and power.
Without further delay, I jumped into the pending topic, "I have endured strange dreams. Vivid dreams of an elf maiden that went by the name of Nalana." The name made Lady Galadriel's eyes widen ever so slightly and she did not touch her food again. "I do not know who she is but she has strange words."
She turned away, as she repeated thoughtfully, "Nalana." Her voice was no more than a whisper that sent a chill down my spine. The piece of the puzzle was in my grasp. Lady Galadriel's blue eyes stared deeply, almost non-observantly. An uncomfortable silence filled me as I heart my heart beat thumping in rhythm and skipped a beat in anticipation.
Galadriel looked to me again, but her eyes were different. A slight change to the curious one that greeted me earlier this hour. Now they are filled with realization and a twitch of fear. "You have changed, young one."
It was barely a whisper but it made my heart clenched painful. I stared at her inquisitively, "Changed? How."
She reached out her hand and gently moved back a loose strand of my hair behind my pointed earlobe. The gesture was maternal and yet, she looked on in hope to find what she sought. If I was not mistaken, Lady Galadriel lost in sight of me. As if I was the riddle that she could not decrypt. After a moment of silence, she answered softly, "Its as if.. two are one…. " She trailed off almost as if she did not know what to say.
"Follow me." She stood up from the chair with elegant movement and started to walk away. Confused by the suddenly change of events; I followed her through another arch entrance and down a long hall of tree root designs. Her white dress trailed behind her and her bell sleeves were caught in the gentle air. Curiosity filled me for I wanted to know why we left so swiftly. It seemed Lady Galadriel was eager for our destination but kept her swift movements sophisticated.
We rounded down a small curved staircase into an opened chamber. A mysterious place, I thought it was. A large tree mounted on the side with it large and grant roots curved around a fountain. A silver pitcher rested next the fountain. Lady Galadriel turned to me and gestured her hand toward the pedestal that I just now noticed. In the middle of the pedestal was a silver empty basin. Despite the eerie feeling that grew in my chest, I felt calm. My eyes took in and I tried to imagine why I was led here.
Lady Galadriel drawn water from the fountain and poured into the silver basin. Confusion filled me as she looked at me with a knowingly gaze. Curious, she was. Once the pitcher was drained, she stepped back and waited. A tranquil expression marred her smooth complexion and her gaze never averted from mine. Her mouth moved to the curious tone that slipped through her thin lips, "Will you look into the mirror?"
"The mirror?" I repeated full of bewilderment. There were no glass mirrors that I could see. When I looked back at her, her eyes dropped to the basin. I followed and understood. I met her gaze again and waited. The choice was mine.
Look into the mirror
Nalana's voice urged in a whisper. My fingertips tingled, desired to reached toward the pedestal. My heart beat rapidly, pounding in my ears and the anticipation lingered in the pit of my stomach. I stepped forward, climbed the single step and towered over the mirror. Lord Elrond did send me here for a reason and here it was. I must trust. Hesitantly, I glance at Galadriel who she warned cautiously in elvish, "Do not touch the water."
I nodded in comprehension. Anticipation crawled to my chest and suddenly without warning; I grew fearful to what was going to happen. My eyes looked directly into the still water and only my reflection shown. To my dismay, it was the Nalana's face. Suddenly, it rippled from the middle followed by multiple ripples. The reflection dissolved into my human reflection. It smiled at me even though I did not grin. Without realizing it, I drawn closer to the mirror when a stricken voice screamed in my head.
Do not touch the water!
Instantly, I movement back and blinked. My heart race as fear filled me entirely. Images whirled back and forth from my past to my present. I frown when the images changed rapidly before my very eyes. Then to my greatest fear, my murderers came to view… All three of them. They dragged my body to the pond. I breathed heavily when my heart clenched painfully to the images of my human body drowning without a fight. My eyes burned with salty tears. A tear hung at the corner of my eye but felt I powerless to stop it. It dropped into the mirror and the imaged changed.
My mother appeared… I saw her… with me as a child. During the time when she was clean from her addiction. When she smiled more and then the images turned black and my father came into view. His hard eyes stared directly at me before the image changed to my sister who held a baby in her arm. A small infant wrapped in a pink blanket, smiling with her now-husband looking over her shoulder. I wanted to look away from the mirror but I was captivated, trapped and forced to watch. My heart sunk to the different images of my past from when I volunteered at the hospital to when I attended school. Then the water rippled again but this time, I saw myself as an elf, crawled out of the pond. Lord Elrond appeared on his horse, rescued me near the Hidden Pass. The twins, Arwen, Glorfindel... Aragorn, they all appeared in a sequence of visions.
To my greatest surprise, there were visions of the unknown. Things that I've never seen. Until a golden elf, turned away from me appeared in my sights. My heart dropped as my belly swam with butterflies... The stranger... he was real. The curves of his body and his posture... everything about him made me want to reach out to him.
Suddenly the past came but not my past. The past of Nalana… Her long voyage from across the sea, her mission and her death. The images sway back and forth until darkness over took the water. Orcs overtook the image; they slaughtered innocents who attempted to escape their grasps. Blood was split. My heartbeat raced more and more with each passing death. My hands clenched the pedestal with heart-wrenching fear when I heard the screams. Trembled as sweat droplets cascade down my body. Black horse riders raced across terrain with screeches. Blackness dissolved until flames boiled the water. A slant pupil opened in the middle and I saw myself in utter agony within the blackness.
You have a charge
The voice of Nalana entered my mind.
Aid against the battle. His time has come again… Use my powers
A heart-wrenching scream erupted in my ears. The water swirled swiftly into darkness and ash. My eyes widen to the figure that walked out from the flames, murmured in the black language. My face drew closer to the water, fear swept through me when I was unable to rescue myself from the dark whispers of the Dark Lord. I wanted to scream for help. Suddenly, a hand grabbed my shoulder and pulled me back.
I fell onto the ground with my chest rapidly rising and falling. Shaken and full of sweat from my own turmoil. I searched for someone from behind, the one grabbed me but no one was there. Lady Galadriel stood on the other side of the Pedestal with a knowingly look. No matter how hard I tried to put away the images from my mind, they came at me relentlessly. My eyes dropped to my hands that were shaking. I looked up at Lady Galadriel and said, "Thank you for pulling me back."
"I didn't…" She uttered swiftly.
I looked at her with confusion. If not her, than who? There was no one in sight that could have yanked me back…
I did
Slowly my eyes fell from Galadriel as my heart grew with grief. Lady Galadriel said in a deep voice, "I know what it is that you saw. It came clear to me."
"Then can you explain…" I uttered breathlessly, almost begged for an answer.
Lady Galadriel walked closer to me. Her voice deepened with resolve, "Your soul inhabits Nalana's body. Like water filled in empty vase. When she fell with her kin two thousand years ago, she willed a spell. A powerful spell, unlike anything I've ever seen, that only the Valor themselves could cast. From this spell, Eru carried her soul across the worlds to aid our need to defeat the enemy."
She paused when I rose up from the ground, deep in thought. Confusion never left me for I could not help but wonder why me? Out of the millions from my world, why was I chosen? My mind turned in circles and then I looked back up at her. "Why was I called to aid?"
"We are all called for a reason. Just as those before us and others presently are called to served a purpose. Do not trouble your mind to find a rhythm or reason." She offered in a deeper tone, ended my constant question of 'why me'. Galadriel drew closer, "Understand..." She started again, her voice thin out into a whisper, "The ring of Power was meant to her be burden. You know of the ring?"
It was more a statement than a question. I nodded for Lord Elrond had told me the Tales of Sauron the Deceiver, the servant of Morgoth. Fear struck my heart to the thought. "What was I meant to do?" I inquired in a sorrowful tone, my voice shaken from the realization. My eyes dropped to my hands that were too soft for harsh work.
Galadriel turned gesture me to follow, we walked out from the chamber and down a soulless pass. "Nalana was a daughter of the Valor, possessed the power of healing..."
"I don't heal!" I immediately cut her off with a wail and stopped to turn to her, "I am studying medical but I can't just…. Heal."
All things will come
"Will you be quiet!" I shouted in frustration and searched for the source of that voice. As if, the person was next to me. When I looked back at Lady Galadriel, who stared steadily at me. I mentally kicked myself for acted for rush, "Oh! Forgive me I did not mean you Lady Galadriel… There's another…"
"There is no other…" She said pointed out.
Obviously... I sighed and tried to explain, "I hear voices."
Lady Galadriel tilted her head to the side in curiosity, "How long have you heard voices."
"A long time." I managed a whisper.
"….Nalana is linked to you. Her mind will endure until the task is finished." Lady Galadriel came to understand, as she turned away the puzzles were starting to piece together.
"So in other words," I started with an offhand voice, "I am stuck with her until this enemy is gone?""
"Yes, only by destroying the ring." Lady Galadriel answered.
"Ok" I began in my nonchalant voice and suddenly became determined, "Where is this ring?"
"No one knows…"
Great…. That helps. My mouth dropped and I sighed in frustration. I pinched the bridge of my nose and inquired, "If I find this ring…"
"Do not confuse" She immediately jumped and sensed my proposal. "The ring is dangerous and corrupts the hearts so easily. Only time will tell if you can resist the temptation…"
"How much time?" I inquired, my eyes instantly jumped to Lady Galadriel who remained patient. "I did not like sharing this... body with anther. I already struggle with the idea that I host this body."
My hands gesture cross my chest, to exaggerate my point. Then in a instant as strange thought came to me. A thought that disturbed me beyond belief. "Do you know what will happen after the task is finished?" I looked at Galadriel, as my voice soften dramatically, even to my own ears.
"Nalana will endure until the task is finished." I repeated Galadriel's words as my heart dropped with fear. "She remained because of her spell... as do I. Against all things, I shouldn't be here. I died in my world and yet I endure. Will I die once all things are finished?
Galadriel remained silent. Her steady eyes pieced me when she uttered, "The future is unclear." the answer left me despondent and unfilled. But Galadriel did not stop there. "This task came to you. When the ring is found, you will know what to do. Understand Amelia, everyone will have a task; one cannot be done without the other. You will find your own path. When the time is right, you will know what to do. Nalana will guide you."
I sighed and stated, "So I have to wait."
All things will come
Oh be quiet….
I sat in the distance of the edge of Lothlorien on the ground, stared non-observantly at the vast forest before me. The night sky was dark out in the woods and the stars were bright. I searched for big dipper since it was the only one I familiar with. Unfortunately, these stars told different stories I did not know about.
I have came into terms that indeed, I've lost my mind. My voice alone, was difficult enough, but now I have another to infuriate me. "You have a charge," I said in mocking voice. At least, she left me alone since Lady Galadriel mirror. Although, I wished Lord Elrond would have given me a warning. Looking into the mirror was terrifying and once was enough…
With a heavy sigh, I stood up from ground and dust off the dirt from my dress. It was a lovely green dress from Lady Galadriel; it was probably not the best idea to sit on it. Swiftly, I rid of all the smudges and loose dirt that hanged in the fabric. Once satisfied, I reentered Lothlorien. My anxiety grew in my chest due to this situation. I needed relief. When I came closer the city, I noticed in the far distance, there was a training yard with a target. With a smile, I went for my bow.
...To be continued
