Sarah slipped quietly from the nursery and made her way back to her own chambers. She wiped the tears from her cheeks as she pushed through the heavy door and into the antechamber. The pale eyes of the little boy branded into her memory. His silent fear tearing her heart to shreds. She threw the elegant dressing gown onto a chair in the corner of the antechamber before moving through the small door that led into the bedchamber.
Jareth was already there, of course, he sat in the great canopied bed flipping intently through a large leather bound volume. "Wandering again?" He asked casually as she slipped into bed beside him. She did not respond. Instead she turned on her side and tried in vain to fall asleep. "What is it?" He asked, softly, stroking her hair. "I'm tired Jareth," She snapped and scooted farther away. She could sense his irritation and tried to burrow herself deeper beneath the sheets.
"You've gone to see them again, haven't you," he uttered darkly before slamming the volume shut and throwing it across the room where it landed with a mighty thud. She felt the bed dip as he shoved the sheets away and stormed from the room, doors slamming loudly behind him. Sarah slowly sat up in the bed and wiped the silent tears as they raced down her cheeks. She moved from the bed to the window and laid her head against the cool glass. Watching as her husband soared away into the darkness.
