Author's Note: I really wanted this chapter to be good, so it went under many edits and had many areas rewritten. Sorry it took longer than intended; I hope it was worth it.
Enjoy!
I haven't seen Christi since the discovery. No trips to Muse, no calls to Michaela. A part of me wants to confront her and ask her about her past with my family, but honestly, I'm too scared. The blood on my shirt from the night I conveniently don't remember? Godfrey being beaten and shot? They have to be connected, and I have a strong feeling that they're connected to Christi.
"Mr. Strata, are you okay?" Audrey Smith asks me. I remember that we're designing a new shop for her to run under the Strata Corporation.
"Ah! Uh, yes, I'm fine, Miss Smith," I say stupidly in response.
Audrey twirls a lock of her hair around her finger, biting her lip. "You don't have to call me Miss Smith, you know. I told you that you can call me Audrey."
Picking up my pen and clicking it a few times, I reply, "I know. I just like calling you Miss Smith… Miss Smith."
At that she lets out a laugh, and I can't help but crack a smile.
Audrey sobers with a sigh. "You know, I'm not really feeling all too well. Maybe it's this heat wave, I don't know. Maybe we should continue the plans later tonight," she says, leaning back into the couch for effect. I wasn't sure how to respond to such a request. Would this be like a date? It seemed as if it would. I really do need to get out and do something, though.
I say yes. I'll pick her up at six and we'll go to the diner for a few hours.
"I'll see you later then, Mr. Strata," she says rather darkly while putting on her coat.
"Always a pleasure, Miss Smith."
It is half past five, and I'm a bit more anxious than I want to be. I hear Godfrey and Libby (who came over about an hour ago) chatting in the other room. I know I shouldn't be eavesdropping, but I can't help it. I was reeled in when they mentioned Christi.
"Well, this isn't good at all. Godfrey, we're not safe. Peter is going to find her. And I don't know if Kaia's on his side."
Peter? Kaia? Who are they?
"Olivia, you have to trust me. If Kaia's here, on Earth, then she's with us."
"Okay, but Sean? He used to side with Christi. He was on one of the rezzes. He was originally against him."
"He was changed. Most of them were. They are forced to fight for the Lead, and unfortunately, that's Peter."
Now this conversation is seriously getting weird.
"Well, hopefully she won't turn in Dominic. If what Christi says is true, then we have to keep a sharp lookout. He could show up at any minute."
What!?
I hear then move, and I rush over to the door. The distance feels much shorter, for some reason.
"Oh, Dominic, don't you have a date now?" Libby (Olivia?) asks mischievously.
"It's not a date," I protest. "We're designing her new shop."
"Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure," she replies, rolling her eyes.
"I'd like it to be called Out of This World," Audrey whispers, her face resembling that of a child who just got a nice, big candy bar.
"Interesting name," I comment, scribbling it down on the construction form.
"I've always been interested in exploring other planets," Audrey says matter-of-factly, which makes me wonder if she's in on the whole Peter thing. "If Kaia's here, on Earth, then she's with us."
I meet her gaze, and suddenly I see another person. She resembles Christi.
I lower my voice. "I have a question to ask you, and I want you to be completely honest with me."
She nods, slightly confused.
"Do you go by another name? By Kaia?"
Immediately, she stands, takes my hand, and drags me out of the diner faster than I could say 'she knows'. Libby's words echo in my mind.
"Well, hopefully she won't turn in Dominic. Peter is going to find her. And I don't know if Kaia's on his side."
What have I gotten myself into?
