I apologize for the extremely late update. I've been going through some personal stuff, but I'm better now. I think. Anyways, this is a short chapter. I've gotten a few questions as to when things will skew from the show. It's gonna be soon.
The Walking Dead: Survival of Shane
Chapter Nine
Shane looked at Carl, who stood there with a face of stone. He didn't show any emotion. He knew that look. And he knew Rick did as well. Carl killed his mother. He killed her so she wouldn't come back.
Leaving Rick to his grief, he went to Carl and Maggie, the newborn crying, breathing in it's first breaths of fresh air. The two walked over to Hershel, who took the baby in his hands. He examined the child, checking the infant's body for anything out of the ordinary.
"How is it?" Shane asked. "What is it?"
"It's a girl," Hershel told him. "She seems healthy. But we need to get formula."
"Felipe should be back soon with the supplies," Maggie told him. "He said he thinks he knows where to get some baby food."
Shane held his hands out to Hershel, who slowly and carefully handed the baby girl over to him. He took the baby, knowing at first glance that the baby was his. It wasn't Rick's. She wasn't Rick's. Shane then thought of Lori; she died giving birth to this little baby, and he would not let her death be meaningless.
A few hours passed, and Rick wasn't back yet. Felipe had returned with the others, having found baby formula in an old drug store. He made a point to tell Shane that it was Axel who found it. They had also found medication; antibiotics, pain killers, uppers and downers.
When they had come back, they asked what had happened. Daryl explained to them how Andrew, the other prisoner who they thought was dead, had set off the alarms, drawing Walkers from the area in, and letting them get inside the prison. They told them of losing T-Dog and Lori.
Shane took all the formula they found and went to find Hershel in the tombs. He found him with Carl and Beth, the newborn crying the heartbreaking wail that would make anyone uneasy. "I've got the formula," Shane said. "Don't worry little girl, we'll get some food in ya in a few minutes." He went to the hotplate they set up in the tombs, and began boiling some water.
"You know how to make that?" Carl asked, walking up to Shane.
"Yeah," the larger man replied. "Used to make it for you, remember?"
"No."
Shane laughed. "Yeah, I guess you wouldn't."
After mixing the formula with water, Shane waited for it to cool down, then handed it to Carl, who brought it to Hershel. Shane looked back at them, sighing with relief. The baby stopped crying, taking the bottle into her mouth. Shane could hear the sucking sounds the baby was making, and gave a large smile as he saw her drink the food.
"Shane," Carl spoke up, "when do you think my Dad's coming back?"
Shane dropped his smile at his question. "I don't know," he told him. "He should be back soon."
"Maybe I should check on him," Carl said. "Make sure he's okay."
"No, no, I'll go," Shane told him. "You just stay here with your sister."
Shane entered the door Rick had gone through. He followed the trail of dead Walkers, knowing they would lead him to Rick. He cautiously stepped over the bodies, making sure they were indeed dead; he didn't want to make the same mistake Hershel made, and get bitten by what he thought was a dead Walker.
"LORIII!" It was Rick. He was still agonizing over what happened. Shane followed the yell, finding scraps of meat and bone on the floor; he saw a familiar, heart shaped pendant on the ground, covered in blood. It was Lori's necklace.
Shane picked up the pendant, and cried. This was all that was left of Lori. Just scraps of meat and bone. He heard a stabbing sound, and looked to his right, finding Rick hunched over a dead Walker, it's stomach engorged, as if pregnant. Rick was repeatedly stabbing it in the stomach. It must have been the Walker that ate Lori's remains.
Shane slowly approached Rick, who kept on stabbing the dead Walker in the stomach, screaming his dead wife's name. He stopped a few feet away from him. He had to let him vent his anger towards the Walker, otherwise he might vent it out on him.
Rick stopped stabbing, and turned around to see Shane. He looked back at him with a sad face. He thought that he would mourn Lori more than Rick, but he saw that he was wrong.
"What are you doing here?" Rick asked.
"Carl's wondering when you're comin' back," Shane told him. "Everyone is."
"I'll come back when I'm done here."
Shane watched him stab at the Walker again. "You should know Felipe and the others are back. They found some baby formula. She's eating now."
"I'll be back when I'm done here," Rick repeated, stabbing again into the Walker's stomach. Shane backed away, knowing his friend needed more space and time than he thought. He left Rick with the dead Walker, the sound of stabbing growing weaker with each step.
Shane sat in his bunk, thinking. He wondered if this prison would really be a safe place. A home for them to rest easy. The world changed all of them, gave birth to new people, just like Lori did. He thought of the baby girl, his daughter; he didn't think she would have a real home, a place to be safe. Maybe he was wrong.
Glenn and Maggie were abducted by Merle because they left the prison to find baby formula for Judith. Since they already have it now, they don't need to go. It's hard trying to skew from the events of the show, but I think I got it now. Please remember to leave a review.
