CHAPTER TEN: A PLEA

The next morning, Edward and Bella plead their case to King Carlisle. Obviously they knew it would fail anyway but what do they have to lose?

Bella found herself back in this large room, the King sat in his large chair except this time, the Queen chair was empty. The girl scoffed, she was probably out trying to find ways to kill them. Edward kneeled in front of his father, subtly motioning for Bella to do the same. She would have to get used to such things. Bella shivered for a moment, on second thought maybe she shouldn't. She didn't want to get used to this era, getting back home is plan number one and she intended to stick to it. Her eyes made contact with the King's, his expression quite cold and calculating.

"Father. My King. I have heard news about going to war with Jasper." Edward began, Carlisle nodded.

"That is right. What of it?"

"May I ask why?" He asked, before the King could continue, Edward continued, "Well I thought we were going to war with Victoria's troops in a season or two. Not next month."

Carlisle stared at Edward, then at Bella, and then refocused his attention back to his son. "Matters have changed Edward. She advanced on Aro's orders we believe. Shocking that a female is leading a troop of men but it seems as though Victoria is trying to pass a test." His eyes seemed to wander off with the last few words, "Of what we do not know but Edward I would like to confide in you."

In the corner of Bella's eyes, she noticed Edward stiffen at those words. "Yes?"

"Jasper has every intention of killing Victoria, you know of his ways." Carlisle began, "I would like you to make that decision when the time comes, a passing of judgment as you will."

"Why not simply order Jasper not to kill her?" He asked, eyebrows furrowed.

"It would not be such a bad thing for her to pass Edward. It matters not to me whether she lives or dies. Her troops have been destroying our crops and markets, causing havoc in this kingdom and her passing would cease all of our troubles. Despite all of that however I would like you to excise judgment on her as a Prince of this kingdom." Carlisle's eyes held a sort of twinkle in his eyes; a twinkle that only Bella noticed considering Edward had his head down to digest what the King had just told him. She wondered what that was about. What could Edward making the decision have to do with any of this? Her eyes made contact with the King's again; he seemed to nod gently before looking back at Edward who, once again, missed the contact. She averted her eyes abruptly, not wanting to look at the man who sentenced her to death but continued thinking about what he just said.

"I…" Edward muttered, "I will do my best."

King Carlisle nodded then stood up, "Now if you are done, I would like to spend some time in my quarters." He nodded again at the two before making his way down the royal steps and out the large double doors leading into the hallway.

Bella's mind was running a circle, what could he mean? Why did he nod at her? Could it be-… No, that would only worsen this whole thing.

"Damn it!" She cursed, swiftly standing upright. This whole thing was so damn confusing! Why couldn't people of this era say what they mean to say?

Edward hadn't even flinched from her outburst; obviously he was deep in thought. Bella moved over to him and waved a hand in front of his face.

"What are you doing?" He hissed, eyes snapping back into focus. "Let's go. We leave soon, as in at the end of the week." Edward stood and walked to another door, leading down another set of hallways with Bella following very closely. She didn't want to get lost all over again and meet the Queen or worse, Jasper. Her eyes were fixated on Edward's back, mind wandering off again to what the King's true purpose was.
