HEAVEN & EARTH
CH 10- Halloween I
October 31st arrived sooner then Lana and Oliver expected. Oliver had been up since the early morning getting everything ready for Noelle's big day. He had made her blueberry pancakes with honey and fruit. Her favorite. He was then going to take her to the pumpkin patch and be back in time for trick or treating. Noelle had been so excited she had been up till a little bit past midnight just chatting away. Oliver let her and once it was midnight he told her happy birthday and gave her a big kiss.
Oliver opened the door to Noelle's room to find her fast asleep in bed. He smiled and walked over to her, rubbing her back softly, "Noelle, wake up, come on now." He said softly.
Noelle rolled on to her back and stretched. Her eyes opened slowly and met her father's eyes. Oliver smiled at her, "Hey. Happy Birthday."
Noelle smiled sleepily. She then sat up when she smelled pancakes. "Pancakes?"
Oliver chuckled and picked her up out of bed and in to his arms. "Yes, pancakes. Now let's brush your teeth first."
Noelle slumped. "But it's my birthday, Daddy! I'm five now."
"Is that so?" Oliver said as he walked out of the room.
"So." She said, "And now I don't hafta brush my teeth no more."
Oliver chuckled. "No, you still have to brush your teeth, young lady."
So Noelle brushed her teeth and washed her face and ran out to the kitchen where Oliver served her blueberry pancakes and orange juice. "Eat plenty cause we have a big day ahead." Oliver sat down with her.
"Trick or treating?" Noelle perked up.
"Not till the evening." He said.
After breakfast, Oliver dressed Noelle, put her sweater and shoes on and sat her in the back seat of the car. Noelle had asked to see Lana before they went but Oliver told her that she would get to see Mommy when they came back home. Noelle was a bit sad but agreed that she would wait.
Oliver took Noelle to the pumpkin patch where he let her run wild. Noelle ran up and down the rows of pumpkins until she found the perfect one to carve.
After they carved pumpkins, Oliver bought her a caramel apple and the took a hayride around the apple orchards. Noelle had mentioned how she wished Lana was there with them. Oliver reassured her that maybe one day she might be. Of course, he too wished Lana would have gone with them but that was a giant step he wasn't ready to take. However, he had been thinking things over.
Noelle and Oliver picked a few apples, had some pie and visited the small petting zoo. Noelle was extremely excited to pet the ponies and the lambs. She especially loved feeding the lambs and holding the bunnies. Oliver was just happy to see her smile.
While Noelle took a ride on the choo-choo train, Oliver visited the small gift shop where he bought her stuffed white bunny with long floppy ears. He surprised her with it after her train ride was over.
"Wow! A bunny!" Noelle smiled brightly and hugged the rabbit. "I love it! Thank you, Daddy!"
"You're welcome." He said to her. All Oliver ever wanted was his own family and moments like those reminded him that he had finally achieved what he always wanted: unconditional love.
When they arrived home Noelle asked if she could see Lana and show her the bunny, however, Oliver declined her again and ushered her to get dressed in to her costume. Children and their parents were already beginning to gather outside. Noelle was a bit upset that she hadn't been able to show Lana her bunny or her vampire costume for that matter but forgot about it when they arrived at their first house.

Lana had been sitting around impatiently all day. She hadn't gotten to see Noelle nor had she had the opportunity to wish her a happy birthday. Lana didn't know what Oliver was planning but she didn't like it.
She glanced at the clock on the wall. It struck 7:15. Oliver had left to take Noelle trick or treating around 5:30. They should have been back by now. Lana got up and paced around until the chain grew heavier and heavier. Finally, she heard the basement door click and open.
Lana stopped her fussing and watched as Oliver descended down the stairs without Noelle. Lana frowned lightly. She wanted to yell at Oliver that Noelle was her daughter too and she had the right to see her child on her birthday. However, Oliver's serious expression kept her from exploding on him.
Oliver was hesitant for a moment and then cleared his throat. "Lana, I have been thinking…" Lana's eyes shot instantly at him instantly anxious at what he had to say, "You've been here for quite a while," he looked at her when he said this, "And despite a few minor incidents, you have been extremely well behaved."
Lana looked down. She knew it wasn't good behavior but a simple strategy to regain her freedom. Nevertheless, Oliver continued on, "So in honor of your good behavior I have decided to trust you to leave the basement." Lana almost lost her balance when she heard him speak those words. Oliver saw the eager look in her eyes and interjected, "However, just to the dinning room for Noelle's birthday dinner- tonight only." Lana nodded desperate to get out of her prison even if it was just upstairs for dinner. "Good," he said and stopped before he went upstairs, "Wait here." He then looked at her and chuckled, "Right."
Lana frowned at his teasing but said nothing afraid to lose her trip upstairs.
It seemed almost ridiculous to her to feel so excited to visit Oliver's dining room but she had grown so tired of the basement that even a trip to the living room would be something new. And not only that, she was going to be a part of Noelle's big day. She always had been but this was different.
It then came to Lana; desperate ideas on how to escape but she knew in the end they were futile, especially with Noelle in the crossfire. She didn't want to risk hurting her but who knew when Oliver would unchain her again. Still, Oliver wouldn't hurt her in front of Noelle, nevertheless she feared his reaction. He had been somewhat decent to her, almost kind (in his own way, of course) that any attempt to flee would bring out the cruel sadistic beast in him. He was barely starting to trust her again. She wasn't sure if she should betray that trust. (At least not for a slim chance at a sweet escape.) But she at least had to try.
Oliver returned moments later with a long white plastic bag. Lana almost immediately knew what was inside. He smiled brightly at her as he placed the bag on the bed close to her feet, "I want you to wear this tonight."
Lana cocked a brow, "Why?"
"For dinner, of course." he answered her as he walked to the small shower in the far corner of his torture chamber turned living space. "I want you to look as radiant as ever." He turned on the water.
Oliver then unzipped the back of Lana's sundress and pulled the straps over her shoulders. The dress dropped to the floor revealing Lana's intimate clothing. Lana cringed trying to hide her body from him. It was useless; Oliver knew every single inch of her skin.
Oliver knelt down to his knees and took a hold of the shackle, "Now, let's behave, shall we?" He looked up at her. Lana only nodded and Oliver unlocked the shackle. Lana instantly felt lighter and exposed. The shackle was a constant reminder that she was no longer free but belonged to him.
Lana stepped in to the shower and let the warm water crash against her skin.
When she was done, Oliver turned the water off and wrapped a warm towel around her now shaking body. He then stepped back and let Lana dry herself. She almost wanted to make a snarky remark on how he couldn't even trust her to dress on her own but she refrained from it. She wasn't going to risk anything. So she grabbed a clean pair of underwear and put them on.
Her eyes then wandered to the lower part of the bed where she had made the incision and hidden the razor. "Oliver." She spoke as she casually grabbed her bra and put it on, her back to Oliver. "Where's Ellie?"
"In the living room." Oliver answered. He had left her there watching Scooby-Doo and other Halloween themed cartoons.
"All by herself?" Lana said looking at him with a disapproving look.
Oliver frowned lightly considering that he had indeed left her alone for far too long and with her entire bucket of candy no less. "I should probably go check on her and make sure she hasn't eaten the whole candy pail." He began to walk away and then stopped to look at Lana, "Behave yourself."
Lana smiled softy at him, "Of course."
Oliver nodded once and disappeared upstairs. As soon as the door closed behind him, Lana dropped to her knees and searched under the mattress for the razor. When she found it she quickly hid it in her bra. Lana then turned to the plastic bag and opened it revealing a simple yet beautiful red dress. She starred at it for a moment and took in a deep breath. It was all for her little girl. So Lana picked up the dress and stepped in to it, slipping her arms through the short sleeves.
Just as she did, the basement door opened and Oliver descended down the steps. Lana turned around to meet him. She put on a smile and tried to calm herself down. Last time she had tried to escape Oliver had caught her right away just by looking at her face and feeling her pulse. Oliver smiled when he saw her in the red dress.
"You look beautiful." He came from behind her and zipped her up. "Very beautiful." His breath tickled the back of Lana's neck and her skin instantly covered in goosebumps. Oliver stepped back and admired her.
Lana felt uncomfortable under his gaze. It would be something she would never get used to and would not wait for the day in which she would. So after she dried her hair and put it up nicely in a ponytail, she let Oliver take her hand and lead her upstairs.
Lana's legs began to shake and her heart beat heavy against her chest. Flashes of freedom ran before her eyes but she remained at his side. She had promised she would be at her best behavior. But it had been years since she had stepped foot outside that basement and her heart swelled with joy to the point where she wanted to fall to her knees and cry. Oliver gave her another warning, which she only nodded to.
She had to plan everything perfectly.
