Chapter 9: Karen and Keith Talk

"Hey can we talk," Keith asks as he approaches Karen.

"Sure," Karen says, looking at him. "I got a call from the school today."

"Lucas and Laura," Keith asks sitting down in front of her.

"That, also Lucas and Nathan got into a fight in the middle of English class. How did you know about Lucas and Laura anyway?"

Keith slides the card for Jamie over to her. "Laura wrote her paper at the Lawson's all weekend long."

"Great. Should I even ask what this is all about?"

"I guess Dan and I had the same idea to confront Lawson. We ran into his mom Jamie instead. She called Turner and told him that she watched Laura write her paper."

"Did she say anything else?"

"She is worried about Laura. She believes Laura might be Bipolar and that Lucas is bullying her. We should all discuss the possibility of family counselling."

Karen shakes her head. "How did things get so screwed up?"

"I don't know. I suggested you to call her to see if you want Laura home tonight."

"Okay I will and also discuss more about therapy if she is right about Laura having bipolar."

"What are we going to do about Lucas?"

"I don't know. He knows better than fighting in class. I should talk to Laura since she is also in that class to get a better idea of what happened."

"That is a good idea. How worried are you now?"

"I'm now extremely worried. I keep wondering if this all could have been avoided."

"How could it be, Karen? Dan is probably the reason that Nathan is at Lucas's throat all the time."

"I know but Lucas has been taught to stand above it. We taught him better than that."

"True but what about the school cheating claim."

"Don't remind me about that. What were they thinking about when one of them came up with this?"

"I'd like to know what the school was thinking. It's never a good idea to put twins in the same class, even when they are fraternal."

"Keith, that's an amazing idea. We get their classes changed. Then they will always have different assignments."

"The one that hands in the wrong assignment is the one that is cheating."

"Exactly, I have to call Principal Turner," Karen says as she grabs the phone.

Keith watches as she dials in the school phone number.

"Karen Roe, wishing to speak to Principal Turner," she says.

"Miss. Roe, how can I help you?"

"I was wondering if it was possible to switch Laura into a different section of classes away from Lucas."

"It is still possible. May I inquire as to why?"

"Their Uncle and I were talking and came up with the idea that if they were not in the same class, it would be easier to determine who is cheating. I am also going off of the advice of Jamie Lawson."

"That does make complete sense. I'll setup a meeting between Laura and the guidance counsellor to rework her schedule."

"Thank you Principal Turner," she says before hanging up.

"Now only if we can separate Nathan and Luke."

"They want to play on the same team, they need to learn to get along.

"True we can leave them to Whitey."

"Those are my thoughts exactly. Did you take the day off from the Auto Shop?"

"I only took the morning off. Do send Luke over when you are done grilling him about the fight and the cheating."

"Will do," Karen says as she watches Keith leave.
