Snatched Away
Part Ten
Previously on Snatched Away: Kim finds out that she has been accepted by the ESOSC and now is a spy.
Rudy messily chomped on the corn dog, and threw the stick into the trash can next to his desk. "All of us had to get tested for this. We read your blood results and simulate a fight that you must get out of successfully. Of course, some of us barely passed." He said, looking toward Milton and Jerry.
"Well, I kind of already did the fight simulation, when I first came here." Kim replied.
"You're right, so all I need is some of your blood." Rudy said, washing his hands in the sink behind his desk on the counter. Jack, Jerry, Milton, and Lindsey were seated in a row in the office, too.
Kim felt her stomach do a flip. She didn't particularly like needles and, honestly, she didn't completely trust Rudy, yet. All the time she's been near him, Rudy has been loud and hyperactive.
He approached her with the surprisingly long needle in his hand. Kim's eyes widened, keeping her attention on the sharp tip of the needle. Her heart was screaming at her to run, but her mind knew that she had to do this.
"Are you qualified to hold that thing?" Kim asked, nervously.
"Of course I am. I was trained years ago." Rudy replied. There was a beeping sound in the other room, and Rudy jumped up, smiling, "My brownies are done! I'll be right back!" He raced out of his office and down the corridor. They could hear his laughter echoing in the corridor, getting quieter the further he ran.
"I'm not letting him touch me." Kim decided, raising her eyebrows.
"Too bad, Blondie." Lindsey snapped.
"I have a name." Kim growled.
"Congratulations! The dumb blonde knows how to speak in proper sentences." Lindsey laughed.
"Hey, cut it out." Jack glared at the disrespectful, brunette girl.
"That's it!" Kim yelled, standing up and kicking her chair backwards with her fists drawn. Immediately, Lindsey got out of her chair and stepped behind Jerry, obviously scared of Kim.
"Everybody just settle down." Milton begged.
"Not until I rip out her tongue!" Kim shouted, violently shoving Lindsey's chair out into the hall. Jerry jumped behind Jack for protection, but Lindsey was frozen in fear as Kim approached her.
"Okay, this is going too far." Jack said, standing up and stepping in between the girls.
"She deserves to get punched!" Kim continued shouting.
"What's going on in here?" Rudy demanded, walking into the room with a platter of warm brownies. He places them on his desk.
"Lindsey is being rude again." Milton sighed.
"Stop it! I'm getting sick of you starting fights with everybody." Rudy scolded Lindsey, "Now apologize for whatever you said to Kim."
"I'm sorry for calling you a dumb blonde." Lindsey sneered.
"You call that an apology?" Kim replied, in a low tone.
"Uh, I'm pretty sure sorry means sorry." Lindsey argued, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Okay, Lindsey, you can leave now." Rudy said.
"What?! We don't go home for another two hours. That's taking money out of my paycheck."
"Exactly. Now leave and come back tomorrow with a better attitude." Rudy replied, "And no brownies for you."
"That's not fair, Rudy!" Lindsey complained, stomping her feet.
"It's totally fair." Kim smirked.
Lindsey grabbed her coat out of her locker and clocked out at the main desk. And to make sure she did as she said she would, they watched her on the surveillance cameras, while eating delicious brownies.
"Kim, come sit over here." Rudy said, walking over to his desk. There was another wooden chair located next to his swivel chair. On his desk he had a packet of cleansing pads, a sterile needle, and a plastic tube with her name written on it.
"Can I just skip that?" she asked.
"No, the government gives us specific directions we must follow." Jack replied, putting his hand on the small of Kim's back, and lightly pushing her, "It's actually not as bad as it looks."
"I cried when it was done to me." Jerry admitted, joining them around the desk.
"Jerry!" Milton exclaimed, "Don't say that until after she has her blood drawn. You're probably making her even more nervous."
"Me, nervous?" Kim lied, "No. No, I'm fine." She reluctantly sat down; unaware of herself, noticeably fidgeting with her fingers. She rested her arm, outstretched on the edge of the desk, and flinched when Rudy applied the cold, wet cleansing pad to her skin.
"You'll be alright." Jack whispered into her ear, and softly kissed the outline of her jawbone. Kim smiled at the sensation of his lips against her skin.
Her heart began pounding harder, when Rudy positioned the needle against her arm, and her breathing became rapid. This is going to hurt. I mean, look at the size of that thing. It has to hurt. I just know it.
"Hey, look at me, beautiful." Jack said, delicately. He placed his warm hand under her chin, and lightly turned her head sideways, so that her eyes were even with his. Heart melted the way he looked at her, and she couldn't help but smile.
While she was busy admiring Jack, she didn't even notice the sharp point of the needle penetrate her skin. Then, after a second, it felt weird inside her, like she wanted to scratch her skin. But it hadn't hurt. Rudy collected the blood sample, removed the needle, and cleaned the area with another pad.
"Now what do we do?" Kim asked, "I've never been a spy before. Any top secret missions you guys have been working on that I should know about?"
"Actually, we just hang out here and watch the cameras for suspicious behavior in the city." Milton informed her, "We have secret cameras on every street and in every business building in Seaford."
"We can even go into town and casually watch for suspicious behavior." Jerry added, "I love my job."
They walked out of Rudy's office together and headed to the master kitchen. Those brownies made them thirsty. They lined up by the counter, and Jack reached for three glasses for his friends. Then, he got himself a glass from the cupboard, too.
Milton got the jug of milk out of the refrigerator and poured everyone's glasses full.
"How long are we obligated to work here?" Kim asked.
"Until we're Rudy's age." Jerry answered her.
Kim's eyebrows furrowed in astonishment. "That doesn't seem right that we're forced to be here for half of our lives. I have dreams that I want to chase."
"Well, this place is where dreams die." Rudy said, entering the kitchen. He joined the teens at the round table, sitting across from Jack Kim and on the left side of Jerry and Milton. "I wanted to own a dojo when I graduated high school, but this happened."
"That's sad." Kim frowned.
"What's your dream, Kim?" Jack asked, setting his glass down on the table.
"I want to become a professional singer. I already write my own music and play the piano."
"I'm sorry, Kim." Milton said, "We're just plain stuck here."
"But I don't want to be stuck here. Maybe if we talk to the government, they'll understand." Kim offered.
"You must never tell them you don't want to work here for very long." Rudy warned her.
"Those officials are mean and gruesome." Jack said, in a serious tone.
