Chapter Ten: Supergirl
Barry closed the door shut behind them as she wandered to the couch with a huff as she laid down.
"Okay, so all in all, this wasn't a bad first day." He congratulated with a smile.
She peeked over the couch with intrigue. "Are you not mad at me anymore?"
"I was never mad at you." He rolled his eyes. She pulled a face and he chuckled. "Okay maybe a little." He admitted and she nodded. "But that was just because I was stressed out over getting you this job and I didn't want you to-"
"Screw it up?" She guessed.
"No." Barry tried to backtrack and stalled. "But also yes."
She looked sincere this time. "I am sorry. I won't do it again, trouts honour."
Barry laughed and hurried on over to sit right by her. "You did nothing wrong, you're from a different planet and I shouldn't have stressed out over you so much. And I definitely shouldn't have eaten all your sweets." He teased at the end and her eyes widened in betrayal.
"What? No." She moaned into her hands.
Barry continued to chuckle and gave a shrug. "Sorry. I'm still hurt that Steve got you sweets and not me. I've known him longer, doesn't seem fair."
"Don't ask, don't get." Kara coined.
"Ah, well."
Kara took off the fake glasses. "Do I really have to wear these outside all the time?"
"Yes. It's a good thing, it will make sure people don't mistake you for Central City's hero."
"I'm pretty sure no one is going to mistake me as the Flash."
"No." He agreed with a chuckle. "But you have powers too – more than I have, you can be a hero too."
"That's why you made me wear glasses? Because you want me to be a hero?"
"It's just in case."
"You have way too much faith in me." Kara grimaced.
"There's nothing wrong in believing in someone. And I completely believe you have what it takes."
She suppressed a sigh, letting it go with her gaze averting to the blank television screen. Barry decided it was best to leave the conversation too judging by her expression, it didn't matter right now – these were still early days for becoming a superhero.
Barry out in another musical for them to watch and hoped she'd enjoy it as much as the Wizard of Oz, but her mind appeared to be distracted throughout and she didn't respond to much of it.
He paused it for a moment to ask. "Are you okay?"
Kara glanced briefly. "Yeah."
Barry wasn't convinced. His heart went out to her. "Do you miss it?"
Kara hesitated and Barry couldn't control what he did next, enveloping the woman in a friendly hug that he prayed would make everything better again. There was nothing he could do and that was the worst part.
"I'm fine." Kara told him.
"Good." Barry said but didn't let her go.
He felt her arms slide around his middle and she leaned into his shoulder. Barry stroked her hair softly and whispered sweet nothings for her to hear. After a moment he adjusted himself while pulling her too, allowing them to lay down along the couch now. "Is this okay?" He checked she was comfy.
She nodded against him instead of speaking, her lips close to his neck.
He stroked up and down her arm soothingly.
"You smell good."
Barry's hand paused briefly before continuing. "Thanks. So do you."
Kara chuckled and buried her nose in the crook of his neck, her arms tightening around him but he could tell she was still holding back considerably. He squeezed her arm reassuringly.
When they were at Star Labs the following day after work, Kara was sitting on the bed while Caitlin ran some more tests on her with Cisco asking her a bunch of other questions about different planets she'd been to. Barry excused himself to talk to Iris when she called.
Kara watched Barry leave and Cisco noticed with a smile but kept it to himself for now.
"She's all good. In fact she keeps on getting stronger each passing day." She informed everyone when Barry returned. "It seems the more solar energy she absorbs from the sun, the more powerful she will become. At this rate I see no limit to the possibilities."
"On Krypton we had a red sun. I guess that's why I didn't have powers there."
"That'd explain it."
"She's going to be the girl with all the superpowers." Cisco played with the pen in his mouth. Then his eyes widened and threw his arms up. "Supergirl! Coined it! Full credit goes to me."
Barry shook his head with an amused expression.
Kara glanced between them all. "I am not calling myself that."
Barry chuckled and Caitlin snickered.
"What? Why not? That's one of my better ones."
"That's not saying much." Barry quipped and got a pen thrown at his head.
An alert went off and Cisco read from the monitor that there was an attack in the park that needed the Flash's attention. So Barry zoomed off while Kara listened to it all as his two best friends coached him through the threat. When Barry had succeeded and taken the thugs to the police station, he came back with his cowl lowered. It was the first time Kara had seen him in the costume and she had to admit it looked very flattering on the superhero.
"Earth to Kara." Cisco waved a hand in front of her and she snapped back out of it.
Barry was oblivious but his two friends most certainly were not fooled.
