"Are you sure you can handle it?" Bruce asked, handing Selena a pile of nappy bags.
It was three weeks since the hostage situation and Dick had come home badly injured from a night time patrol. While Bruce had wanted to keep Amelia at home, Leslie had said she would need Alfred's help in looking after Dick and Bruce had to go out after the criminals who had attacked his son. Selena was the only contact in Gotham he had been able to raise in time.
"It's fine." Selena said.
"It's just she's started crying when people she like leave the room and rolling over. If you are going to leave her on the floor, keep her away from anything dangerous." Bruce said.
He kissed Amelia's forehead.
"It's okay, sweetie. Aunty Selena is going to look after you."
Amelia cooed a reply and tried to grab for Bruce's face. Bruce smiled and kissed Selena.
"No criminal stuff."
"No criminal stuff." Selena promised.
"I'm bored. Lets do criminal stuff." Selena said slowly, smiling.
She looked at her daughter who was lying on the floor.
"I'm guessing that B hasn't let you do anything criminal. How old are you? Four months or something. That should be a crime."
Amelia looked up at Selena and seemed happy about the idea of being a criminal. Selena smiled and began to look around. She found a small mask in her lounge and put it on the baby.
"No wait! There's some people who would like to meet you." Selena said. "They haven't seen a baby like you for a long time and they don't have to know who you really are."
Poison Ivy watched as a figure dropped down and smiled. She recognised the figure but not the baby that the figure was holding.
"Where did you get the baby?" Poison Ivy asked.
"I'm baby sitting her. I'm just not very good at keeping her out of trouble so I decided that I might of well just get in trouble."
"Who's baby is she?"
"She's a friends." Catwoman said. "But for today she shall be called Catgirl and if I ever bring Catgirl here you are to not even attempt to work out who she really is."
"It's nice to meet up." a voice laughed.
Harley Quinn walked in.
"Who's the baby?" she asked, seeing it.
"She's Catgirl." Catwoman explained, simply.
"Oh, great." Harley Quinn said. "So what are we going to do?"
"Look after Catgirl." Catwoman answered.
Poison Ivy smiled. Already she was building a cot from plants.
"We should go and steal something."
"Lets go and find Mister J."
"No, Harley, Joker would hurt Catgirl." Poison Ivy said.
"Lets play a game." Catwoman said. "We'll see who is the first to steal Penguin's hat."
Penguin sighed as Harley Quinn dropped down from the ceiling.
"Are you here to steal my hat?"
"I'm always here to steal your hat." Harley Quinn said, climbing down from Penguin's desk.
They were in the office of the Iceberg lounge and casino, the club Penguin owned. Batman often tried to have it shut down but with few results. There was nothing he could pin down on it.
"You can't steal my hat." Penguin snapped. "If you steal my hat, or even try to steal it, then I will tell Joker that you have been meeting up with Poison Ivy and Catwoman."
Harley Quinn sighed and looked at the short man. Then she turned and walked away. Penguin tried to get back to his work but he felt a vine climb up his back towards his hat. He sighed and took off his hat.
"Can you please leave me alone to work?"
"No." Poison Ivy said. "Just give me a kiss and we'll talk about this."
"No. I need to do some work and you still can't steal my hat."
Poison Ivy frowned and turned away. She smiled as her vines reached against for the hat. Penguin grabbed his hat and pulled it off his head. He looked at Ivy and then sent her out.
Penguin knew that Catwoman would be coming soon. She would try to steal his hat and he didn't want her to. They were always trying to steal his hat. Suddenly there was a knock at the door. Penguin got up and moved towards the door, one hand on his hat. He looked down the corridor but saw it was empty. Then his eyes settled on a little baby lying on the floor in front of him.
"Who are you?"
The baby was dressed in a black cloth but seemed fine. She smiled up at him and Penguin picked her up. He cradled her and smiled.
"What are you doing there?" he asked.
He took off his hat and placed it on the baby's head. Suddenly Catwoman swung in and took the baby from Penguin. The hat was on the little girl.
"See Catgirl, you could make it as a thief, despite what you think." Catwoman said, taking off the hat and placing it on her own head. "Lets get you home."
Penguin looked at the fleeing woman and the baby. He snapped his fingers and summoned one of his men.
"Find them and bring me back my hat. Bring me the baby too."
Catwoman looked down at Amelia and smiled.
"You'll make a good thief. No one ever suspects a child." Catwoman said.
Then she remembered Helena. Helena was her daughter. Her daughter who she gave up for adoption after all the horrors she had been through. The girl had been attacked and... She was so much like Amelia. The little girl was always in danger. Bruce's villains would never let her have a normal life.
"Do you want a normal life?" Catwoman asked the little girl, placing her down on the ground. "Because if you are with Bruce then you won't get one. He's worth it but you have to be sure."
Catwoman kissed the little girl and smiled. Then there was a knocking on the window. She moved closer and looked out. There wasn't anyone but Catwoman didn't trust it. She decided that someone had followed her. She didn't want them to find out where she lived. It would put her in constant danger. Then she realised she had said Bruce's name. She needed to give her attacker some form of amnesia.
"Where's Zatanna when you need her?" Catwoman asked, scooping up Amelia. "I'm going to find you somewhere safe."
Amelia began to cry. She didn't like being handled like that.
"Shush. It's okay. I've got you." Catwoman cooed. "We need to get out of here and tell your daddy about the danger he's in."
Catwoman leapt across the rooftop, carrying Amelia in her hands. The girl was wrapped up in a brown sack to disguise her as well as the Catgirl mask on her. Catwoman was aware of three figures chasing her but she knew where she was heading and they didn't. She faked a left and in the darkness lost one of them. The two followers after her looked like fully trained assassins. The closest was armed with two swords, the further back one was armed with a long staff. They were after the hat that Catwoman was holding in her arms along with the baby. She knew she should let it go but she didn't want to. She was stubborn like that.
Catwoman dropped down into the botanical gardens and looked around.
"Ivy!" she called. "You know stealing the hat. I managed it but now Penguin is after me!"
Poison Ivy dropped down.
"You and the little one."
Catwoman smiled at the baby in her arms and fell silent for a few minutes.
Why did you have to be dropped into this life by me and by Bruce?
"You should just return the hat." Poison Ivy suggested.
"Could you babysit Catgirl while I'm gone?" Catwoman asked.
She didn't really have anywhere else to put the girl. It was either she stayed with Poison Ivy or she came with Catwoman. Poison Ivy smiled and had one of her wires take Catgirl from Catwoman.
"Be quick." Poison Ivy said.
Catgirl smiled as leaves began to dance around her. She liked the pretty flowers that Poison Ivy controlled. The flowers dangled down over Catgirl.
"I wonder who you are." Ivy thought aloud as the little girl giggled. "Seriously, neither Catwoman or Harley are heard of for nearly a year and then Harley turns up and disappears as soon as she comes and Catwoman brings a baby and leaves you with me. At least Harley isn't here to try one of her tricks on you."
Catgirl rolled over much to Ivy's amusement. She smiled at the little girl.
"Catwoman probably doesn't know what she's letting herself in for, looking after a baby like you." Poison Ivy said.
Then the lights went out.
Catwoman placed the hat on the desk. Penguin smiled but didn't look at her. He had been facing the window and only knew his hat was back because he had ordered no one to bother him until he got it back.
"And the baby?" Penguin said. "I told you to bring me the baby as well."
Catwoman froze. Amelia was in danger. Penguin turned and looked at Catwoman. His eyes widened but the thief was gone before he could say anything.
If you ask Batman why Poison Ivy is such a formidable opponent, he will answer it is because of her vines. It was these same vines that were forming a cocoon around Catgirl. The baby found the vines amusing and was giggling at them. The lights in the botanical garden had gone out and Poison Ivy had become aware of someone moving around in the darkness.
They must have followed Catwoman here. Ivy thought when she knew that Catgirl was going to be protected as much as possible but still allowed to breathe. What have you gotten me into Selena?
Ivy looked around in the darkness. If they believed that the hat would be there then it would be solved quickly when Catwoman returned it.
Suddenly Poison Ivy sensed a knife cutting through one of her vines near the entrance.
So they've cut the power and now they're using the cover of darkness to come after me. They're well trained.
Poison Ivy looked at the vines which hid Catgirl from the outside world and these attackers. She wanted to stay with the girl and make sure she was safe but there was no way she could protect the child and stay with her. Poison Ivy sighed and then smiled. Out of the ground rose a man made of plants. The plant man formed from green until it got colour and became the exact copy of a man from Poison Ivy's memory: Batman.
"Protect her." Ivy ordered.
The plant Batman nodded and Ivy turned away. She summoned one of her man-eating Venus Flying traps and began to hunt down the assassins. Ivy scanned the plants. She could sense the assassins moving around through the trees. She looked around and began to hunt.
Catwoman knew she had to get back. If those assassins had been after her and Catgirl, they could have followed her to the botanical gardens. It meant both Catgirl and Poison Ivy were in danger. Catwoman was racing across the roof of the city. She hoped she didn't come across Batman, especially without Amelia. She knew the way to the botanical gardens well but this felt longer.
I have to get there! Catwoman screamed internally.
Her heart was thundering louder than it had ever gone before but Catwoman didn't care. She needed to get to the gardens.
Poison Ivy yelped out in pain as the sword cut through her arm. She had found the two assassins and they were avoiding the mouth of her creature easily. The staff the other assassin was using was slammed into her stomach.
If they're here for Catgirl, they won't find her.
The assassins were silent and violent. The moment that Poison Ivy had them restrained in her vines they cut through them. She threw thorns into their paths but they had little effect.
As long as they're after me, they can't be after Catgirl.
Catwoman dropped into the botanical gardens. She registered that the lights were out and looked around. She could see that some of the plants had been attacked.
Oh no. she thought. I need to find Amelia.
Catwoman began to race through the plants. She looked around but could barely see anyone in the darkness. Then she slammed into a strong figure. The figure turned and looked at Catwoman. The figure in the darkness was unmistakable. Catwoman gasped in horror.
"I'm sorry... I didn't... I'm hiding her from Penguin."
She waited for the figure to punish her, to tell her she was never going to see the child again. He didn't. He stayed silently. Then Catwoman realised that it wasn't the real Batman she was talking to. She smiled.
"Ivy made you to protect Catgirl." Catwoman said. "Where is she?"
The silent figure pointed towards the bundle of vines. Catwoman smiled and kissed the figure.
"Keep it up, B." she murmured and then raced off to find Poison Ivy.
Ivy realised that Catwoman was there long before the assassins did. She didn't show how happy she was to see her friend. Catwoman was getting ready to attack. Ivy looked at the assassin who was holding the swords. She decided that she wanted to take the one with the staff. She smiled at the one with the staff to show Catwoman that she was going to take that one. Catwoman sighed and leapt towards the assassin. She kicked one of the swords out of the assassin's hand. The assassin raised an eyebrow as if to suggest that Catwoman would not have the skills to even handle the sword. Catwoman smiled, accepting the challenge. She spun the sword around in her hand and began to fight.
Catwoman cut Catgirl see with a strike of her sword. She smiled at the little girl and then thanked Poison Ivy. Poison Ivy was looking at Catgirl and Catwoman.
"She looks like you." Poison Ivy remarked.
"What makes you think that?" Catwoman asked.
"You just seem so happy together." Poison Ivy said.
Then Catwoman's phone went off. She pulled it out and opened the message.
-S-
I can pick her up now. Be round in 5.
-B-
Catwoman smiled and looked at Poison Ivy.
"That was Catgirl's daddy, my friend I was looking after her for, he's going to pick her up soon and he didn't want me doing something like this." Catwoman smiled.
"Yeah and I need to drop these off at police headquarters." Poison Ivy said, pointing at the assassins. "Auntie Ivy is going to see you later."
Bruce smiled as he turned up on the doorstep of Selena's house. Amelia smiled when she saw her father. Bruce was handed the baby.
"Hello, sweetie. How was it?"
"She was very peaceful." Selena said.
"And no criminal stuff?" Bruce checked.
"No criminal stuff." Selena agreed.
"So how was Ivy?"
Selena knew she was busted.
