"Hello. May I sit down?" Sheryl looked up and saw a dark-haired girl smiling down at her. She nodded.
"I'm Marlena. A friend of Jim's." they shook hands. "And your Sheryl, Bones' girlfriend, yes?"
She nodded. "yeah..."
"What's the matter?" asked Marlena.
"Oh, nothing!" she smiled. "Friend of Jim's? so are you his girl?"
Marlena laughed. "Oh, no. Just friends. A girl like is lucky to have a male friend. Any lady in the 'Fleet is. " Sheryl smiled.
"I know. I really do like Jim, he's been such a good friend to me too. I'm so surprised Leonard didn't want me to meet him."
"Really?"
"Yes. But Jim was so nice to me. Very polite. Like I was an equal. And he hasn't stopped. I mean, he beat up the boy who was harassing me. He helped me with some school things, just, little things." she smiled. Marlena grinned.
"Sounds like someone has a crush."
"No! no, I...me,.. Leonard-"
"-wasn't talking about you, sweetheart. I meant Kirk." she said. "Look, I know I have no right to tell you this, but Jim really likes you."
"But-"
"-oh, he won't act on it, not while you're with Leonard. He wouldn't." Sheryl looked away.
"Right, Leonard." she sighed. "I need to go." she stood. "Thanks for the talk."
"Bye, Sheryl."
"Goodbye, Marlena." Sheryl left. Marlena waiting a few minutes, then hopped up and ran to find Kirk.
"James." she said when she found him. She went right up to him and kissed him. "Hey, Jim. It's working." He grinned.
"Thank you darling." He let her go. "How much longer?"
"A few days and a couple of kind gestures, I'd say." said Marlena, resting a hand on her hip. "You'll know when Leonard hits you across the face for being a dick. she's definetly the type to break up with the other guy first."
"I'll be waiting then."
Kirk went reeling from the strength of the punch. He put a hand to his face, Blood was spilling from his nose.
"What's wrong, Bones?" he asked. "Did I do something wrong?" Bones was shaking.
"I have never. never done anything, asked for anything, said anything, against what you wanted. I complained, yeah, but I have always pulled through! If humans have souls-which I doubt-you own mine. So why?!"
"Why what? why take away the one thing you wanted for yourself?" Kirk righted himself and strode over to Bones. He leaned in and whispered in his ear. "Because I could." he stood up straight. "And as long as you had anything to yourself, you would never really be loyal to me." Jim walked away.
"You don't even want her!"
"Well, then. I guess I'll just do what I always do with stuff I don't want. Burn it."
"Don't-don't you goddamn dare! Don't you hurt her!" Kirk laughed.
"I'll do whatever I damn well feel like. And you won't stop me." Kirk left the room.
"James!" Sheryl stood up from the bench where she sitting. "You came!"
"Of course I did." he sat down and she sat back down next to him. "What did you need?"
"Well, firstly. I broke up with Leonard." she said.
"Sheryl, I'm so sorry. I really wish things could've worked out better for you two. It seemed like you would last." said Kirk.
"Well, I guess some things just aren't meant to be." she said. "But the reason I wanted to talk to you was, um...the reason I left Bones."
"Yes...?"
"I am really into you, James." she said.
"Really?" he started to laugh happily. "I-I feel like such a bastard for it, considering Bones, but I like you to."
"Honestly? I wasn't sure at all..." he took both her hands in his.
"Well, now you are." he leaned in and kissed her. She sighed and put her arms around his neck. What she had wanted was an honest relationship, one where it wasn't going to be about ladder-climbing and to her, it seemed like she had found one in Leonard, but something had been wrong there, something had been distant and cold. but now-
"Aaa-ah!" she gasped as a knife slid into her back. Kirk's knife to be exact.
"In addition to probably having pierced your stomach, the blade is poison. You will find your vocal chords have swollen, disallowing you from talking." Kirk smiled, the same kind, genuine smile had had given to her just moments before. She fell down off the bench, the pain making her want to scream, but she was unable.
"Goodbye, Miss Prince. Oh, and by the way, you really should've stayed with Bones." Kirk got up, pulled his knife out of her back, and walked away.
Bones sat and stared out the window. One week to the day now since she had died. And he didn't even care.
Well, he did. under other circumstances, he'd have killed Kirk and to hell with the consequences.
But this was different. She had chosen him. and few smiles, and a well placed helping hand once or twice and even Sheryl had been Kirk's to take from him.
All because he was a stubborn ass.
Spock had talked to him every day the past week. It wasn't hard to tell Spock had known this was going to happen, and that he disagreed with Kirk. It didn't change anything.
Kirk came in and sat down beside Leonard. Kirk had hardly even been around the past week.
"Bones."
"You didn't need to kill her."
"Yes I did."
"...yeah. You did."
"Good. And Bones, I'm not the only killer in the room right now." He grabbed Bones gloved hands. "This is your strength Bones. Never touching your victim, never needing to look them in the eyes as they die, because you've had them drugged. Doctors have access to everything about everyone and no one wonders why. And that-" he let go of Bones' hands. "Is why I killed Sheryl. Because I both want and need that power, and you would never give it to me if she was alive."
"I could just refuse." said Bones. "You killed the only person who really gave a shit about me, why shouldn't I die?
"Because the only person who gave a shit died." Kirk smiled. "What'll happen to the next person to give a shit?" Leonad tensed up and then turned and looked at kirk.
"There won't be a next person. I'm never letting anyone get so close to me again. Ever." Kirk shrugged.
"Your choice, but I still haven't heard anything about me."
"You have my undivided, loyalty, that's all I have anymore." Kirk grinned.
"That's all I want.
