"My entire existence in this world has remained a secret for so long. I have kept it so to protect those around me. But all it has done is cause harm to come upon those I love."
"Um, Steel?"
"What?"
"I think you were thinking out loud."
"Ah. I see. Well…," his mind seemed to drift off.
"Steel!"
"Ah!" He jumped at my exclamation. He must have almost been in a trance-like state. "A long time ago. It all began a long time ago." His eyes lifted up to the sky, or ceiling anyways. "I started in an icy, frozen land. Far, far away. I was confused, scared, I wasn't sure what to do. Something that most feel when they suddenly come to this world. There was very little life. Snow, everywhere I looked, there was snow."
"There were no trees?"
"No, there were trees, not many, but there were trees. And, like most, I ran up and punched one of them down. Everyone of this world experiences the same sensation, in the same way. However, some are too panicked, it just depends. First they punch a tree, then they turn them into planks, then they make a crafting table. It's the same thing over and over again. But, after that, nothing, suddenly these urges are gone and they are left to their own lives. Most don't survive much beyond that. Now where was I...?
"I built myself a little wood hut to shield me from the elements. I survived there off the apples that dropped off the trees. Replanting the saplings as they dropped as well. But I grew bored. I wanted something more. I was surviving but that wasn't enough for me. Purpose, I wanted purpose. So I left the safety of my hut. I had only a few apples to my name, whatever that was.
"I travelled the barren landscape. The sun was rising again by the time I reached a grassy plains. I was tired, hungry, nearing death. I saw a village off in the distance. Using the last bit of my strength I darted for the village. I arrived on the brink of starvation, I could already feel my stomach eating me up inside. I collapsed at the foot of the village. Two fuzzy figures the last thing I saw.
"I awoke to three of the villages inhabitants. One wore a black smock, another wore a brown covering and the last wore a white coat and shirt. They each greeted me with a 'hrmm.' Their noses, heh, they were rather… abnormally large. They led me around the village. Showing me the different occupations the villagers had. I learned a lot from these people as did many others. "What I didn't know was that these people were being targeted. I didn't and still don't know why they were. People seemed to kill them for amusement and, before anyone knew it, they were gone. The people that helped us start our existence, were killed by those they helped. It's quite a cruel world we live in. But that's how it goes… I suppose.
"I left the village, grateful for their aid, and went off again, plenty of food to complete the journey, compliment of the villagers. I crossed the plains, a mountainous region, a forest filled with trees that stretched into the skies and I eventually came upon a town. Not of villagers but of people like me. It was a walled town, to protect itself from the monsters of the night. It was quite the impressive sight for me at the time. Towers climbed high into the air on all four corners of the town. It was not extremely large but it was for sure larger than anything I'd seen. Just inside the town walls lied a small residential area. People immediately saw me and came to my side. I was accepted and given a job, a purpose.
"I was sent into the mines outside the walls to gather supplies for the interior, and a recruiter for the king's army came to the town I dwelled in. I was first in line to join. To help my fellow people, that was what I truly wanted to do. They took me and the other recruits to the capitol. None of us had ever seen such a large place. Hundreds of blocks the walls soared into the air. Impenetrable by any opposing force. The only entrances were large gateways on all sides of the city. In the center stood an enormous keep, its towers going higher than the walls. That was where the king dwelled.
"We were taken to the armory. That was where our training began. For months we labored there, day and day out. Eventually we joined the army. Thousands of troops, all set on one purpose, destroy the monsters. I was stationed on guard duty in the southern sector of the wall. I could see for hundreds of blocks from where I stood. Monsters came here and there, but it was never anything substantial. Then everything fell apart.
"The eastern wall was penetrated in broad daylight. None of the troops were prepared for what was about to come. Any guards that were posted there were quickly overcome. Zombies, skeletons, creepers, every monster imaginable charged through those gates. In mere minutes half the capitol was lost. In an hour half. By nightfall, everything. It was all ashes and debris from explosions. The king escaped. Only a few warriors made it out alive. The capitol had fallen.
"Everyone was utterly shocked at the power those monsters had acquired. They were tactical, strong and armored. Since then, a new capitol has been built and order has been restored. The monster armies still attack. But nothing like that day. I suppose that's the end of my tale."
"Um, that doesn't explain whatsoever why you became so reclusive about your past."
"Some things are best left forgotten. The past is a dangerous weapon."
"And what about your current name?"
"Another thing best left forgotten."
"So much for being open."
Steel was about to speak but then a large thumping sound could be heard coming from outside.
"They've found us, we've gotta get out of here."
"Who?" At that moment the past broke through the door.
