Anticipation
He sits there, eyes trained in every crevice of the manor that might hide even the slightest traces of a witch. Maka can sense the power his soul radiates, it's as if he is resonating against his own self and his power is building up to be the greatest time bomb in history. Any moment. Any chance of him seeing a witch and he'll explode. Maka was watching him now as he read, twirling Chrona's hair as she feel asleep for the night in his lap. The moment would have soothed Maka's heart into an unimaginable bliss if it weren't for the fact that she could see the battle Kid's soul was going through. She saw the hatred that was emitting out of his soul at the idea of how the witch Hydra had been the one to deal his mother the final blow. She saw the pure bloodlust he had for that woman. She saw everything in that soul that should have not been there, she saw things that would make any normal human run at the sight of the reaper fearing their own death.
Yet she did not.
She moved in the complete opposite direction because she saw something in Kid, underneath everything that should have made her pee herself in fear she found something that was truly Kid. The 'silver lining' as said in one of her favorite films. She saw it in his eyes, his pure molten gold eyes that bore into the thing this affection was pointed to.
Maka saw how Kid flicked his gaze up to her once in a while, how his gaze flicked to Chrona even more frequently and she also noticed that he hadn't flipped a single page in the book he's been reading for the past half an hour. She could feel the worry and even over all of the horror she was feeling from his she could feel his pure undying affection and need to protect them. Maka felt the love Kid had for them and the need he felt to protect them no matter what the cost.
That's why she was moving closer to him.
Kid glanced up at her when she was about two feet away from the couch, he sat up a little so he wasn't completely leaning on the arm of the couch as he was before. "What's wrong?" He asked looking up at her slightly tear stained face. Maka said nothing as she went to slide onto the couch so she was sitting in the small space between Kid and the arm of the couch. She leaned her head between the shoulder blades of his back and hugged him from behind slowly resonating with him to try and calm down his nerves. "Maka..."
"Shut up..." Maka said weakly yet forcefully to quiet down Kid. She felt him accept her soul resonance and slowly began to resonate with her so all of his doubts and worries about losing the two of them pore into Maka. Kid could feel Maka shaking on his back slightly and knew she was crying. When he tried to say something to comfort her once more she shushed him again. "I can feel what you want to say... I can sense it right here." SHe said slightly bumping her fist against where Kid's soul was. After a moment of silence, Kid placed his hand over Maka's rubbing comforting circles over the back of her palm before going to bring her hand up to his face. He kissed the back of her hand, her palm then her wrist doing the same to the other hand for symmetry's sake. Maka was shocked slightly and a small blush appeared on her face as she buried her head slightly more into Kid's back, something nagging at the back of her mind.
"Let's go to bed." Kid said as he picked Chrona up off his lap with one hand, the other was still untangled in Maka's hands. Maka followed him up to his room where they slept with Chrona in between them without a single complaint as she relished into sleep in the warmth of her family's embrace(*1&2*).
Maka was in the shower letting the warm water rush over her sore body. She just came back from a very vigorous mission with Soul and she could already tell where the bruises would be in the morning. She guessed her body isn't what it used to be as she rubbed her shoulders knowing they would be sore in the morning. She hears the door to the bathroom open behind her but she doesn't move to acknowledge the person, she already knows who it is. She keeps her back yo the shower door not daring to move as she hears the other person moving around in the bathroom. She then hears the shower door open and still refuses to move when she feels warm hands wrap around her waste.
"Are they asleep?" She asks. She feels the man behind her hum to confirm her question as he brings her back into his chest, putting his head on her shoulder. "Are you sure?" She asked again as she felt his hand ghostly slide down her arm to grab her hand bringing it to his lips to kiss.
"Positive." He mumbled out against the back of her hand. Maka winces slightly as she feels the cut she received on her abdomen stretching uncomfortably. The man behind her from as he moved his hand to rub over her stomach one where the cut was scabbing over. "When did this happen?" He asked putting a protective hand over it.
"Just now from my mission..." She said quietly as she felt the man behind her move so he was crouching on his knees.
"I told you to be careful."
"I know."
"I told you not to get hurt."
"I know." Maka felt herself being turned around by the man that was standing behind her. She watched as he leaned up to kiss the cut that was on her abdomen. When he opened his eyes to look up at her Maka didn't know what to do.
"Don't ever make me worried like this." He said as he slowly traced circles around her cut.
"I promise Kid."
Her dream was cut off by a scream in the night.
Maka's eyes shot open as she went to goo pull the screaming Chrona closer to her. Chrona's whimpering stopped when she felt the strong hold of her mother and the comforting circles being rubbed on her back by her father. "What's wrong? What happened now?" Maka asked referring to Chrona's nightmare.
"She lead me to a cave! She dragged me into this big scary cave by the weird big kid rides! And then we went down this weird scary cave past a bunch of creepy bats and spiders and everything and she took me right into this massive chamber with all these scary things mommy and she sat down and said 'home at last' and then she began to pull out souls from people mommy, she's scary!" Chrona wailed as she buried her head into Maka's chest. Maka looked up at Kid, thanking Lord Death for the protective dark blanket that is the night for covering up her already extremely red face.
"You know there's only one old 'big kid park' right?" Kid asked Maka. Maka nodded her head then thought better of it before she said she knew. There was only one place that could fit Chrona's description, it's the old abandoned amusement park, an area that is wildly popular during Halloween time. In the amusement park is the 'Hell Cave' where it is legend that who ever goes in never comes out... the perfect environment for a witch.
Maka stood outside the DWMA, swearing at the cursed dream Liz, Patty and Blair caused her to have the night before, hindering her ability to just look Kid dead in the eye. It's there fault! They did this to you! Kid is just a friend! I wonder if his body is as toned as I imagined... Maka let out a small groan causing the man of her thoughts to give her a quizzical look. Maka laughs sheepishly before going to look at the floor, recalling what happened here the last time they were hear. Maka, Kid and Chrona went to inform Lord Death of the witches reappearance and Kid had a few questions to ask his father... I guess you could say not everything went according to plan.
"What do you mean?" Kid had asked in a low, dangerous voice that sent shivers down Maka's spine.
"I mean that the witch did not lie to you... I thought I killed her off years ago in revenge for your mother... for my dear Alexandra" Lord Death said giving Maka a quick look to see if she already knew where this conversation was going.
"Well then explain to me why the hell she would want to do this to us? To Mom, to Me, To Maka to our family?!" Kid asked to enraged to leave out the 'and friends' as far as Maka could tell.
"Because I did the same to her!" Lord Death bellowed after Kid's relentless questions. "I did the same to her..." He said this time more in a whisper. Maka clutched the slightly whimpering Chrona closer to her, and this action did not go unnoticed by the two shinigami in the room. Kid walked over to the two girls and Maka instinctively held Chrona closer getting a hurt and shocked expression from Kid. Kid let his hand drop slightly as he looked down to the ground.
"What do you mean you did the same?" Kid asked.
"She used to work at the old mansion as well Kid, she was your mother's best friend and she fell in love with me just as fast as your mother probably did, maybe even faster looking at it now. As we grew older and the more I look back I can see how jealous she was, I can see her struggle to try and keep all of her pent up emotions down. Her name back then was Margret Anne, no one knew her last name because a servant had no need for one. The only servant in the entire household who really ever received a last name was Alexandra. When I proposed to Alexandra she was there, cheering us on and smiling happily, but I didn't know that that incident would be the only time I would hurt her. As the years went by, Margret resented me slightly for taking away her best friend so she dabbled in witch craft to see if she could become immortal to life forever with her dearest friend. That's how she meet Mabaa who introduced her to the Wizard Jensen, a Wizard who's soul purpose was to help heal witches. Since Margret wanted to learn a non-violent way of magic Jensen taught her and soon they were living as immortals. Being the young and naive shinigami I was back then, I killed every witch or wizard I heard word of which included Jensen. I looked at Margret as I killed him too. I left her there, deciding not to kill her because of the childhood we spent together, little did I know what would really boil up in her soul.
"Years later, after excessively training with Mabaa, Margret successfully went through all the spells that enabled her soul to bend into a witches. She renamed herself Hydra and swore to the witches code that she would get revenge for her lost lover. She covered her tracks well, bringing out new kishen to keep me busy as she studied my- no our personal life. On that night, when I was at my most vulnerable she attacked taking away the life of one immortal, the life of her best friend. I then went after her, I slaughtered her in hopes that it would fill up the empty void in my soul. When I realized killing her wouldn't bring back ALexandra, I stopped looked down at her bloody body and left, not caring about the soul. I thought she was dead Kid, and I'm so sorry for not realizing it." Maka saw the small streaks of tears coming down Kid's face, so she went against her natural instincts telling her to run, and went to olean her forehead againsts Kid's rubbing small circles against his back as she did so.
"You know what she's doing now don't you, after hearing all of the ingredients she needs for the spell?" Kid asked his father as he looked up slightly to see Maka's calming eyes.
"She is planning to revive Jensen, and bring with him the tortured souls from the pits of hell that have had any influence with their deaths... those souls would be under their control and you know who would be with them Kid..." Lord Death said. Kid nodded his head and Maka brought her hand up to rub away a small tear that rolled down Kid's face. He grabbed her hand and delicately kissed it, then the palm then the wrist before laying his head back on her hand for another second more.
"Thanks." Kid had said to Maka before he nodded to his father as a goodbye and leaving with her.
Looking back on the memory now, Maka looked towards Kid with a slightly questioning look. Maka new she'd seen that movement before. So far Kid has done it twice to her, that day being the first time and last night being the second, and a third time in her dreams if you want to count that... Maka shook her head as she brought her thoughts back into focus. She remembered reading something somewhere about those hand movements. Was it for school? Just a romantic boring read? Where could she have read it? School library... no... public... they wouldn't have something like that, then her head snaps to attention as she remembered where she must have read it, not remembering the book, she remembered the location and topic though, The Secrets Behind the Life of the Death God and she read it in Kid's library. How could she be so stu-
"We're here." Kid said getting her out of her train of thought as she stared up at the big doors leading to shinigami-sama's office. Nodding to herself, Maka clenched Chrona's hand slightly more before entering the Death Room to see everyone from her resonance team there as well as Kim's resonance team and the death scythes of the school (minus Marie who was supposedly at the Doctor's because she's been feeling much more nauseously and doesn't want to get anyone sick). Maka felt Chrona smile happily at her father and ran over to Spirit asking about whether or not they would have another fun day together. Spirit laughed at Chrona and told her that he would hang out with her after the meeting when she told everyone about her scary dream because, 'you always face your fears when you fight them face on and show them who's boss.'
When Chrona explained to them her dream, Spirit left with her getting a promise from Lord Death of a full report of their plans when he was done. When the door closed behind them Kid spoke.
"So when do we attack?" He asked.
"As soon as we can prepare a decent enough sized army." Lord Death replied.
"We own a school meant for hunting down witches, I'm pretty sure we have a big enough army." Kid said.
"Not all of the students here are as qualified to hunt witches as the people in this room Kid." Stein said from his spot next to Lord Death.
"I agree." Kim butted in. "If we could take down Hydra, I would suggest doing it immediately, but I was there when Mabaa fully transformed Hydra into the witch she is and I can inform you that we are nowhere near ready to face her."
"But she's going to go after Maka and Chrona, we can't just let her do that!" Kid growled out in frustration.
"Kid..."
"If we don't take down the witch now when will we be able to? We have less than two weeks to 'prepare a decent enough sized army' so we can go after this psychopathic witch! Do you understand how long that might take us?"
"Kid..."
"I refuse to let them be taken away from us, from me just like mom!" The term Mom caused a slight gasp out of the members in the Death room never hearing the word fall from Kid's lips before. "We have to protect them at all cost, even if it means that I have to go in empty handed and take care of this-" Kid stopped talking when he felt a small hand touch his shoulder.
"Kid..." Maka began making sure he was paying attention to her. "We're not the only one's she's after, you must remember that... She wants your soul on a platter just as much as mine, and you know for a fact that if we tried to storm her hideouts now we would be slaughtered and used for her revival spell. How long will it take to prepare an army?" Maka asked Lord Death.
"A week, it would give us 5 days of preparations for the attack date, which will be the day before the two week mark at night when the witch will be the least on her guard thinking we have decided to focus more on defense then attacking her." Lord Death said staring at the two.
"See Kid." Maka said looking at Lord Death then back at Kid. She looked up at him with one of her trade mark Maka smiles. "We'll be ready for her Kid, I know it." Kid looked down at her a moment before leaning in so he could whisper in her ear.
"I know you're lying... I know you're just as scarred of this as I am... I can see it in your eyes." He said staying relatively close to Maka so she could look directly up at him. Maka tried to keep her smile, but Kid noticed it faltering slightly as she continued to look at him. Maka then leaned foreword and put her head to rest on Kid's chest.
"Tell me we'll be able to do this..." Maka whispered to him. She felt Kid put his head on top of her and rub smooth circles in her back.
"Everything will be okay, we'll be able to do this." Maka was to busy contemplating the chances of their survival during this mission to notice the dark aura being emitted from Soul.
It was almost time for Maka's movie outing with Soul. When Maka mentioned it to Kid she could physically feel the room get colder. She didn't understand why he was over reacting, they were just going to see a movie right? Maka sighed as she looked in the mirror. Soul and her were going to see a late night movie so she was able to stay for dinner with Chrona and Kid. Maka would be leaving right before Chrona's bedtime which would be in about half an hour. Maka quickly brushed her hair and got changed into something that she wouldn't mind wearing out in public. She had in her usual pigtails, no make up, nothing even remotely fancy.
That is, except for the chocker she has yet to part with.
Maka sighed once more as she fingered the black necklace as she looked at it in the mirror. She honestly couldn't say why she loved this chocker so much, it should seem meaningless to other people, it's just a necklace. Yet whenever Maka tried to take it off, she would stop half way thinking that it was fine the way it was. Maka checked the clock once more seeing as it was 5 minutes to Chrona's bed time. Maka walked over to Chrona's room to see her just crawling into bed, Kid was sitting on her bed reading her a story as Maka went in. He gave her a small, uneasy smile as he then looked to Chrona moving over slightly so Maka could comfortably sit on Chrona's bed with him.
"What are you reading sweet heart?" Maka asked Chrona looking down at the book she was holding.
"Papa's reading me Charlotte's Web! It's such a good story mommy, the piggy is my favorite!" Chrona cheered. Maka laughed happily as she went to go and kiss Chrona's forehead(*.
"I'm glad to hear your enjoying it, Mama's here to say goodnight because she won't be here later." Maka said after she kissed Chrona's forehead.
"Where are you going Mama?" Chrona asked curiously.
"Mama's just going to see a movie with her idiot weapon partner who insisted on seeing a movie with me this week." Maka said rolling her eyes. Chrona giggled slightly.
"If you don't want to go to the movies then why don't you stay with us and we can all read together! We can create webs in our backyard! WOuldn't you like that Mommy?" Chrona asked. Maka smiled at Chrona.
"You don't know how much I would love to do that with you." She said ruffling Chrona's hair.
"Then why don't you?" They heard the doorbell ring in that moment. Maka kept her eyes on Chrona for a moment with a bitter sweet smile as Kid got up.
"Looks like you should go." Kid said as he walked towards Chrona's bedroom door opening it wide for Maka. Maka got out of her trance and kissed Chrona goodnight. "I'll be right back!" Kid yelled back at Chrona as he took Maka towards the front door.
"Kid..." Maka said before they reached the front door.
"Do you have everything you need?" He asked her, always being the gentleman he is he went to grab her coat and put it on her. This caused a small blush from Maka as she was mentally berating herself for having thoughts of Kid being such a gentleman now.
"Yeah, i have everything... what I wanted to say though was... um..." Maka was still looking at the floor one arm holding the other in an insecure stance.
"What is it? You know you can tell me anything." Kid said to her. Maka looked up at Kid and kissed him on both cheeks.
"Thank you for being there, for all of us..." Maka said looking up in the direction of Chrona's room. Kid nodded his head, getting out of the shock he was in for a moment. "If I had to pretend to be a child's parent with someone else... I'm glad you're the father, and I'm glad to know what you would do for us." The doorbell rang again, this time longer. Maka rolled her eyes before going to answer it to see Soul standing in the doorway. They exchanged greeting before Maka looked over her shoulder to Kid one more time. "I'll be fine, so know you can go to sleep whenever you want alright?"
"Mhmm..." Kid hummed in agreement, and with that Maka walked out the door. Kid had just enough time to see the door close on Soul's hand going to hold Maka's.
1) Haha funny story, my father was reading what I was typing over my shoulder during this entire scene and since I was listening to loud music I didn't hear/notice him and hahaha ha ha ha... he was like 'what do you write in your free time?' and i felt like i was being judged by the king of judgers
2) A little rated T stuff there, so ya know I'm not sure what to expect from y'all
3) I don't own that book, if I did, I would cry everyday remembering how I killed off my favorite character...
Anyway hope you enjoyed the chapter!
