Chapter 10

Day 1

It was uneventful, except for one certain conversation. Cat had rushed into a pair of pants and shirt before grabbing her letter and hightailing it down the stairs. She skidded to a halt in front of the study door and smiled at the doormen.

"Is he in?" She asked.

The doormen looked at each other, but nodded to her question.

"Thanks."

Before they could react, Cat knocked on the door. She disappeared inside a second later before getting a positive response.

"Good morning, my lord. Sorry for the intrusion, but I needed to speak with you." Cat said to a startled Cornwallis, who looked angry.

"And that is?" He inquired with a put upon sigh when he saw it was futile to reprimand her for her intrusion. Instead he just relaxed back into his chair and smiled indulgently at the woman standing in front of his desk.

Cat returned his smile as she placed her letter onto his desk in front of him. "Could you mail this to England for me?"

Cornwallis glanced at the letter and noted the last name. 'So my instincts were right again.' He mused silently.

"Why?" He asked. He still knew very little about what had happened yesterday. The Dragoons had been tightlipped for once in a very long time.

Cat's smile faded. Cornwallis had a sudden urge to do or say something to bring it back. He copied Cat's frown.

"I told him that I would write to his family."

Cornwallis stood and rounded his desk to stand in front of her. He gripped her shoulders, smiling gently with sadness and sympathy.

"I will mail it with my own letter. Just remember that this guilt and grief fades, yet will stay with you forever. The first always does. Mine was a dear friend as are many for other soldiers such as I used to be." He paused to take both one of her hands into his. "It's a part of being a soldier. A part of war, yet we move on because we must. For ourselves and others."

Cat smiled and hugged, knowing that Cornwallis was mainly talking about his late wife, Jemima. Cornwallis stood still quite shocked at being hugged.

"She's in a better place, my lord, yet she still resides here on earth. She rests in your heart and in your memories. She even resides in the memories of others who have loved her. Cat comforted softly, fighting tears at the man's pain.

"Thank you." He whispered before stepping away. He laughed a little. "You best be off. You have new patients to see to."

"I know." Cat turned to walk to the door, but turned back. "My lord?"

Cornwallis looked up from his place behind the desk. "Yes?"

"This party.. Is there dancing?" Cat asked timidly, her face creased in worry.

Cornwallis was tempted to say yes, but he decided against it as he laughed. "No, Cat, but there shall be balls later in the season that do."

Cat swallowed and nodded before leaving quietly.

Day 2 and 3

Cat spent her time at the Medical tents, nursing the eleven soldiers that the Dragoons had rescued. She was told stories about Leighton Phelps and was thanked many times by each one for what she had done for their comrade. Cat had been speechless.

Day 4

Cat was feeding Private Anders when Captain Wilkins walked up to them.

"Good morning, Captain." Cat greeted, smiling up at him.

"Good morning, Miss. We are readying for a raid." Wilkins explained, smiling back. He was glad that she was smiling again.

Cat sighed as she motioned for a housemen. He took her place and Cat followed Wilkins to the fort. To her surprise, the Dragoons were mounted and waiting with Lucifer beside Tavington. He gripped Lucifer's reins loosely making Cat suspicious. Why was Lucifer docile for him and not any others? Despite her suspicions, Cat said nothing as she took the reins and mounted. Today she rode beside Tavington, who was just as silent as his hard gaze stayed focused on the road ahead.

Cat turned to him about to speak when he lifted an arm and waved it forward before galloping off, leaving Cat to catch up.

"Come on, Luc. Let's get 'em!" Cat whispered to Lucifer as she leaned flat against his neck. As an answer, Lucifer lengthened his stride, increasing his speed. They were head to rear as they galloped through the woods. Cat dimly was aware of the others following. Cat and Lucifer were now neck to neck with Tavington and his mare. Tavington glanced over and Cat grinned cheekily as she mouthed, 'pay back' to him. His lips twitched at her before he focused his gaze back on the road, urging his mare forward.

While the humans interacted, the horses had their own little conversation. The mare had turned her head and snapped at Lucifer's neck, who drew back his lips in a feral grin before leaping ahead of the mare her rider. Cat whooped out aloud with her laughter ringing back to all the men behind her. Many smiled, even Tavington, though it was barely visible for any to see. Despite her laughter and fun, however, Tavington wouldn't be bested by a woman for it wasn't in his nature to lose at anything. So he spurred his mare forward and stayed neck to neck with Cat and Lucifer and they only slowed when a house from up ahead became the slightest bit visible.

"Bordon." Tavington called over his shoulder. Bordon rode up to his free side, straight backed and blank faced. They continued forward in a more sedate pace to the house. As they rode closer, the sound of giggles and laughter from children could be heard. They entered the yard of the house and Cat watched as the children froze in terror before running to the porch where their mother stood with more mature terror visible in her eyes. Eyes the color of amber. Eyes that a few of the children owned as well. Cat shifted in her saddle as a feeling of dread settled down in the pit of her stomach, making her feel nauseous. She looked away from the frightened family and focused on what Tavington was saying...well... shouting really.

"Michael Wenton, come out now! You are under arrest for treason against the His Majesty by aiding 'The Ghost' and militia." Tavington's voice was loud and dripping icicles into the oppressive silence that filled the small modest yard.

Soon the sound of a boot against wood was heard before the creaking of the house door as it was opened, revealing a man dressed in a shirt and pants.

"I'm here. Just don't hurt my family." Michael Wenton pleaded, hands out revealing no weapon as he stepped down of the porch. Cat studied him as two Dragoon's tied his hands behind his back. Michael Wenton probably had seen better days. He was unshaven, tired, and haggard. Brown hair was mussed and blue eyes were sad and angry all at once. Cat just sighed. When one had a family, one had to chose which side would make the worst enemy. Obviously Wenton had chosen the wrong one and now him and his family where paying the price of his folly.

"Fire the house and the barn. Any horses, take them. Any supplies that might be needed or are needed, take it." Tavington ordered, watching Wenton as he cursed and struggled between the two dragoons. Apparently the man thought they had struck a deal. They hadn't. Tavington never negotiates with a person he deems unworthy of his respect and attention. Obviously Wenton was one fo them.

Cat watched sadly as Mrs. Wenton herded her children off the porch as she cried with her frightened children. Cat felt pity for the woman. Her home and belongings were being burned, however, she had her children. They were what mattered, Cat thought her pity short lived. Of course her husband was being taken away to be hanged and Cat could understand her grief, but Cat knew that woman should have known that her husbands actions would have consequences that had come true. Cat realized her sympathy lay with the children and not the adults, who were stupid enough to put their children in danger. With her feelings for the children, Cat spoke up a tad angrily for them.

"Must you have the children suffer for their fathers mistakes? Wenton isn't your father. The children aren't you and like you don't deserve to lo.."

Cat was cut off as Tavington grabbed her braid and wrapped it around his hand tightly. He brought her face close to his and Cat's green eyes stared into his blazing blue ones.

"Did I not tell you not to assume my reasons? I also do not tolerate the questioning of my orders. I told you to follow them without question did I not?" He asked tightly, his temper barely restrained.

Cat glared at him, pain lining her face and in her eyes. "Yes! Now let go, you bastard."

After one last squeeze of his hand which made Cat grimace, he released her braid. He rode away from her without a backward glance. Cat massaged her now aching scalp and followed, her anger subdued for now. Now with Bordon beside Tavington and Cat with Wilkins the Dragoon party rode away from the burning house and barn.

Wilkins glanced at Tavington and Bordon before leaning close to Cat to whisper to her quietly, "Look behind us."

Cat glanced at him and fell sucker to his brown puppy eyes. She turned in her saddle and looked back to seea child eachriding with a Dragoon. Even the Wenton woman was riding behind one of the Dragoons, her amber eyes shifting to watch each of her children. Cat turned back to Wilkins in full blown fury.

"The bastard. He can't leave the children to grieve. What is he going to do with them? Line 'em up and have them shot?" Cat asked angrily. Wilkins caught her braid as she moved to ride up to Tavington. 'This is the last time I braid my hair,' Cat growled to herself as she reached out to yank her braid away from his hand.

"Easy now. Will you trust me? Will you trust William Tavington if not Colonel Tavington?" Wilkins asked softly, imploring to her feelings for his commander.

Cat hesitated a fraction as she glanced between the sad family and Tavington. Her eyes came to rest on her choice.

"Yes and yes." Cat answered, her green eyes on Tavington.

"You won't regret it." Wilkins reassured her softly with a small smile.

Cat nodded. "I hope you're right, Captain. I hope to God you're right."

They both fell silent as they followed Tavington and Bordon back down the road.

- - - - -

Bordon glanced sideways at the Colonel and sighed silently as the stiff posture, granite face, and blazing eyes.

"She'll understand soon enough, Will." Bordon assured the man quietly.

"No. Wilkins shall take her back to the fort. Let her think I'm a monster. It's not the first time and it won't be the last." Tavington stated coldly.

Bordon opened his mouth to speak, but shut it, knowing there was nothing he could say. The Colonel was right. Cat wasn't the first to show interest only to fall for the talk and gossip. Some of it was true, yes, but most wasn't. Some of the truth was exaggerated because of one man and his hatred for Tavington. Bordon lips tightened into a thin line as he thought of O'Hara. Both Bordon and all the Dragoons knew that O'Hara was the one who exaggerated the truth to make Tavington look bad in Cornwallis's eyes. And O'Hara didn't do it alone. Oh no, O'Hara mistress had fueled the horrible rumors among the noble women, who listened for O'Hara's 'secret' mistress was Tavington's Ex- Fiancee. The fiancee who Tavington had...loved in his own way before her betrayal with O'Hara, who had wrecked Tavington's rep among the higher officers to get Cecilia Huntington to cry off her engagement to Tavington. After the cry off, Tavington realized what a bitch he had promised himself to and preceded to get pissing drunk with men. He had then indulged himself the camp whores for about a week before throwing himself back into military career, the only thing he had left. Even today he was still trying to climb back into Cornwallis's favor.

As Bordon lost himself into his thoughts, something occurred to him. Cecilia Huntington had yet to reveal herself to Cat and that worried Bordon forit meant that Cecilia was plotting and that didn't bond well for Cat.

Bordon was jerked from his thoughts as Tavington signaled for a halt at a 'fork' in the road.

"Bordon." Tavington nodded to him sternly.

"Sir." He turned his mount and approached Cat and Captain Wilkins.

"Miss, Captain Wilkinsshall be taking you on to the fort." Bordon informed her gently, knowing that she would be angry at the hidden order. 'Go back to the fort with no questions asked or else.'

"Oh really?" Cat asked quietly, staring angrily at the Colonel's back. He would have said more, but only grimaced as Wilkins aimed a swift kick at her shin. 'At least he didn't use my braid again,' Cat grumbled silently with a murderous glare at Wilkins. The kick had hurt. He just mouthed, 'Trust me', before breaking away from the procession to take the road back to the fort. Cat followed silently with one glance at the Colonel, who kept his back turned to them. They rode away from the others and only stopped at a quarter of a mile before turning back. Curiosity was building as Cat followed Wilkins down the road that Tavington and others had used. Wilkins suddenly stopped and dismounted, leaving Cat to follow suit. Both tied their horses to a low tree branch, to Lucifer's disgruntled disgust. He nipped Cat in the hip for the indignity. Cat turned and slapped him on the nose before leaving him to follow the impatient Wilkins, who dropped into a crouch before yanking Cat down with him. He crept forward to the edge of the woods, planting Cat and himself behind a tree each. Wilkins grinned and pointed beyond his tree and Cat followed his silent instruction. She looked around her bulky tree and dropped her jaw. There in front of her was a village of shacks and tents. Children and women dominated the place, but Cat could see about ten to twenty regular army redcoats along with the normal hundred Dragoons. Children were laughing and playing around while women watched over them as they went about daily chores. She spotted Mrs. Wenton and her children being drawn into the pleasant scene as she easily pinpointed Tavington (How she did is what she'll never tell) standing beside Bordon and a buxom blonde. They obviously knew each other well as all three laughed together pleasantly.

"What is this place? And who's the blonde?" Cat asked, quite aware that her jealousy showed.

Wilkins rubbed his mouth, trying to erase his grin. "This is a town for rufugees. This is where the families of traitors are brought. Not all come here. If the family resists, shows violent aggression, or tries to help the accused escape then we leave them to fend for themselves." Wilkins answered her first question, watching Cat, who watched Tavington. Cat actually growled as the blonde placed a hand on Tavington's shoulder.

"And the..."

"I think I'll introduce you two instead of explaining." Wilkins answered as he stood. He walked away from his tree headed toward the trio. Cat cursed and quickly jumped up to follow. She ran after the long legged Wilkins, both spotted now by the trio and many others. Tavington was scowling fiercely as they stopped before him.

Cat was panting as she smiled up at him cheekily. "Ya didn't think you could get rid of me so easily did ya?"

Tavington just scowled even more. Bordon and Wilkins exchanged amused weary looks before the blonde pointedly cleared her throat.

Four faces turned to stare at her. One scowling, one suspicious, and the other two guilty.

The blonde smiled at the suspicious one. "Hello. I'm Bethany Bordon."

Cat's face relaxed in shock before she finally smiled as she thrust out hand to be shaken. "I'm Catriona Johanson. Call me Cat, please!"

"It's nice to meet you, Cat, and please call me Bethany. I've heard so much about you." Bethany responded pleasantly, shaking Cat's hand. Cat released her hand and glanced over at a blushing Neil Bordon.

"All good, I hope."

Bethany Bordon laughed. "Oh yes. All of it. I've been nagging Neil into bringing you here so I could meet you in person. And here you are. It's quite a treat."

Cat blushed faintly. "I wish I could say the same. I didn't even know your name. I knew he was married and all because of his wedding band, but not about you personally."

"That's Neil for you. Very quiet even with me." Bethany said with understanding. She glanced over at Wilkins. "And it's quite nice to see you again, James."

James Wilkins grinned. "Everything holding here?"

"Yes. Now, Mrs. Bordon, the list, please! We must be getting back." Tavington answered for the woman, who handed over a folded piece of parchment.

Tavington took it and walked away to mount up.

"Well, It's was a pleasure seeing you again, Bethany." Wilkins kissed her hand before running off towards the woods to retrieve his horse. Cat would have to get her own. There was no way he was going to even try to handle the beast.

"It was nice meeting you, Bethany. Hopefully I'll see you soon." Cat shook hands with the woman before leaving her and her husband to say farewell. Cat walked up to Tavington and glared up at him.

"Excuse me, sir, but I need a ride to Fort Carolina. Would it all right if I could ride with you?" Cat asked, reminding them both of when they met.

Tavington glanced down before riding away. Cat stamped her foot childishly very aware that she had screwed up...again. At least last time, they had almost had sex in the garden despite her angry words. Cat sighed and glanced up at Bordon, who had rode up beside her. He offered a hand silently and she accepted it. She swung herself up onto the horse behind him and stayed silent even as she got down to untie Lucifer before mounting. Bordon took his place beside Tavington, while Cat rode beside Wilkins with her sad eyes on the stiff figure of the Colonel.

When the Dragoons returned to the Fort, Cat cornered Tavington in the stables.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Cat asked quietly. Now wasn't the time for anger since it was what put her in the 'dog house.'

Tavington looked down his nose at her. "I shouldn't have to explain anything to you, Nurse. You are obligated to follow my orders and to not to question them at all or at any time. I do not explain myself to the soldiers under my command and that includes you, Miss. Johanson. You aren't special or privileged in any way to me . Now move or I will forcibly move you myself."

He didn't have to for Cat moved away from the contempt that seemed to drip from every pore of his body. Tavington left her in the stables where she found a little comfort from Lucifer, who for once seemed very sympathetic.

Day 5 and 6

Cat nursed her patients and tried to talk to Tavington, who just looked down at her and sneered with the contempt that cut Cat to the bone. It seemed Jacob was right. She did get burned, but not before Tavington got burned first.

To say she was frustated was an understatement of course as she found herself bored in the evenings. It was during one of these boring evenings that she decided to find Neil Bordon. She got directions from one of the soldiers for his tent and found it easily. It was about three tents down from Tavington's. She knocked on the flap hard and called his name, "Bordon." She didn't have to wait long as Bordon answered fairly quickly.

"Miss. Johanson?" He inquired, puzzled as he opened the flap to reveala grimacing Cat.

"Please call me Cat. I HATE Miss. Johanson. It's all I've been hearing!" Cat snapped, irritated.

Bordon hide his grin as he stepped aside for her to enter his tent. "I see. Very well. Would you like anything to drink or eat?"

"No thanks. I'm good. I'm here about your wife and that makeshift town of hers." Cat answered as she sat on his cot while he sat on his chair behind his small table where his dinner lay.

"Ah! Well first off, do you mind if I..?" Bordon gestured to his half eaten dinner. Cat shook her head. " Well I met Bethany in New York two years ago. We, the colonel and I, were housed with her and herfamily. At first she hated me and any redcoat, including the Colonel." Bordon grinned as he chewed. He swallowed before continuing. "Like you, she gave the Colonel a time of it, but her past pranks were on me. Actually one of pranks is what started our courtship...er...really it was our speed y wedding. You see she got us locked in a... unused room for a night therefore compromising her..." Bordon trailed off as his mind went inward to his memories. Cat hid her grin, keeping silent so as to not embarrass the man.

Bordon came out of his daze quickly, with only a slight color to his cheeks. He cleared his throat as he shifted in his chair. " er.. Well... We married with Tavington as my best man and soon uprooted to come down here. She had a room in the mansion, but mainly slept here. It was on our third month here when we, the Dragoons, were sent to pick up a traitor. And..." He looked at Cat solemnly. "... the makeshift town wasn't Bethany's idea. It was William's."

Cat winced, nodding slowly. "It figures." She sighed, rubbing her tired eyes.

Bordon smiled. "William isn't as cold-hearted as people think. He took one look at those terrified children and ordered the men to take one child with them. He took one himself. The youngest of about four. When we got back Bethany immediately took over. She soothed the mother and with a few other officers' wives helped with thechildren and such while William and I went to Cornwallis. He allowed us to gather tents and supplies to make a place for them. Soon we gathered many more families and used supplies we gathered from the Continentals for them. It's been going on for almost a year now."

Cat sat absorbing it all as Bordon finished his dinner. Tears pricked her eyes as she thought of what she had said to Tavington a couple days ago. Cat willed them away before standing.

"Thank you, Bordon.."

"Neil. If I can call you Cat, then you call me Neil." He interrupted, smiling at her as he stood with her.

"Neil, I...He hates me doesn't he?" Cat moaned, sitting back down, face covered by her hands.

"No. Just upset. Feeling betrayed." Borodn sighed as he walked up to Cat. He knelt in front of her and moved her hands. He met her teary green eyes with his steady blue ones. "I think you need to be told about Cecilia Huntington."

Cat tilted her head in question and Bordon explained.

"Cecilia is William's ex-fiancee."

Cat's eyes widened. "Why ex?"

Bordon stood and went back to his chair. "Cecilia turned her back on him when O'Hara destroyed his reputation and friendship with Cornwallis."

Cat's eyes narrowed. "That man!" She spat.

"Indeed. Cecilia is now O'Hara's mistress...," His lips twisted. "...Secretly of course."

Cat snorted as she stood to pace. "These rumors are of course about how he fights. Of how he succeeds in war."

Bordon nodded, following her with his eyes. "Yes."

Cat stopped pacing to face him with a pained face. "I've screwed up haven't I?"

Bordon grimaced. Cat sighed as her shoulders slumped.

"I ...I think you should know that after the ending of his engagement he started to...er.. visit the...um..."

Cat looked at him sharp eyes. "Whores. He's bedding the camp followers."

Bordon nodded as he watched Cat. It was something to see as the defeated young woman suddenly turned into a sharp eyed ..er...well... Valkyrie.

"Well I'll just have to...talk with this woman." She sneered.

Bordon eyed Cat warily. He felt sorry for Dahlia, William's favorite whore. She had no chance with Cat. No chance at all.

Day 7 and 8

On day 7, Cat spent her day with Lucifer. They rode around the nearby terrain, scouting for the perfect spot...

As night fell over day 7, Cat dressed in dark clothes and hid across from Tavington's tent, watching. Soon a female figure approached his tent and slipped inside. With a growl, Cat settled down to wait and plan until morning. An unholy smile appeared on her lips. God help the girl...

As dawn approached for day 8, Cat watched the female figure emerge from Tavington's tent. Cat saw her face in the dawn light and smiled that smile again before sneaking away from her hiding place. She had preparations to make.

Night dawned over day 8 and Cat waited in the darkness for the girl with Lucifer standing silent behind her. A figure passed Cat's hiding place and Cat darted out, pistol raised , swinging it down to hit the figure in the head. The figure slumped as Cat caught it before dragging back to the hidden Lucifer, who stood docile as Cat heaved the onto his back. Cat mounted and directed Lucifer from the camp. The last quarter moon giving some light as a guide. They stopped inside the woods where Cat dismounted, dragging the body with her to a tree. She propped the body up and quickly tied it's hands to the tree before calling Lucifer to her. She untied her canteen from her saddle and unscrewed the lid to toss some of the contents into the body's face.

A gasp was heard in the night air as thewoman sputtered and opened her eyes to see a grinning Cat in her face. She screamed only to be silenced by a slap to her cheek.

"Now none of that, sweetie. I just want to talk to you." Cat cooed as she grabbed a fistful of thewoman's hair to pull her head back. Cat leaned close with a hardened face.

"I'll make this simple and sweet, honey. You stay the hell away from William Tavington. Find another fuck buddy because if I see or hear that you've been near him, I'll string you up by your hair and make sure to end your...career by messing this..," Cat caressed the woman's cheek, who growled. "...pretty face up. Do you understand, sweetie?"

Thewoman nodded slightly. Her blue eyes were wide with anger and slight fear.

Cat let go of her hair and smiled at the girl. "Now, sweetie, since you slept with him last night, I'll have to leave you here as punishment, but don't worry you won't be alone."

Cat went further into the woods only to return quickly with a tied hissing bag. Thewoman whimpered and pressed close to the tree as Cat knelt beside her, hissing bag in hand. The girl glared up at Cat, who just grinned. 'This one has backbone. It's pity that she needs to learn a lesson. We could have been friends,' Cat thought

"These little guys will keep you company." Cat winked at thewoman as she sat the bag a foot from the woman's right leg.

"Now I'll leave..." Cat pulled out a knife and slammed it into the ground near her the woman's tied hands. "..this here for you. If you can get it and cut your way out, that'sfine, but if not one of the Dragoons will be here in the morning to release you."

Cat stood and mounted Lucifer. Cat turned him toward the way out of the woods. She grinned at her 'prisoner'. "Have a nice night and don't forget what I said. I think you'd like to keep such a pretty face. It'd be a pity to mess it up, really."

With that, Cat left thewoman tied to a tree in the woods with a bag filled with two harmless snakes. Come on, Cat didn't want to kill the woman, just scare the shit out of her. Cat grinned as she entered the Fort. Life was sweet.
