Chapter 10
Hard Day's Complications
Gibson walked down the robot's stair well and entered the middle level. He yawned as he stretched his arms, popping his metallic joints. After hearing a satisfied 'clink' from his back, he approached the large flat screen monitor. Running his fingers over the buttons, the screen flickered to a live preview of the city. He scratched his chin as he checked the scanners.
"Hey Gibson…" came Otto's dreary voice as he stepped through the door. Scratching his back while rubbing his eyes. "How did you sleep?"
"Better than usual." The blue monkey put a flabbergasted thumb to his chin, "But oddly enough I do not remember going to bed last night. Perhaps you have any recollection of what happened before period of dormancy by any chance Otto?"
The ditsy green mechanic cut the scientist a blank look at his long-winded question. "Uh… what?"
He face palmed, still inquiring Otto's low IQ level despite being such an amazing mechanic. "In basic human tongue, do you remember what we did before going to sleep?"
Otto blinked and flashed a big reliving grin. "Oh good I thought you were asking me some complicated math question!" Missing Gibson's smoldering stare, Otto shrugged. "To be honest Gibby I really can't recall anything. I just remember all of us talking, then nothing, capoot… just fell into a nice sleep. Which by the way very refreshing!"
Gibson shook his head, once again pondering why he even bothered asking the youngest monkey for any assistance. "Well glad you slept peacefully regardless…" he sighed as he redirected his attention back to the monitors. "While we all slept the scanners have not picked up anything from last night or this morning. But then again its only 7:30 a.m… and never leave it to criminals to get a late start."
Otto shrugged till the sound of whooshing doors flipped his attention around. There came in Antauri with Sprx in pursuit. Otto and Gibson nodded to the pilot and second-in-command as they approached. Gibson turned away from the monitors to give his brothers all his attention.
"Good morning Antauri. Sprx. Did you two sleep as well as me and Otto did?"
Sprx seemed to have his hands glued to the back of his head in his usual sarcastic pose. "Yea sure did, but the kid and Nova are still in their rooms. Knocked on the doors for about forty seconds, no answer, so I assumed they are probably still sleeping."
Otto blinked, "Well I knocked on their doors earlier to. No one answered."
As the three pondered and discussed, Antauri has his hands clasped together with his eyes shut. Giving off the impression that he was in a deep trance, his brothers' conversations didn't disrupt him. After holding the look for fifteen seconds, he opened his sky blue eyes and cleared his throat to gain everyone's attention.
"I… do not sense Nova or Chiro in their rooms." He ran his metallic hand over his chrome surfaced helmet. "This is unusual, for I would have sensed their departure. Even in deep sleep I would have had a conscious awareness of it. So my recharge must've been deeper that my inner spirit was immune to all outside propaganda."
A loud sticky noise ripped through their ear pieces as the team jumped. All optics turned to glare at Otto, making the green monkey raise his hands in a defensive gesture. "Sorry guys! Was just trying to contact Nova and Chiro on their communicators. And I got nothing… just static."
Looking towards the control panel, Gibson glided his digits over the key-pad gracefully. A few clicks later the blue simian brought up a few new panels on the huge monitor. "This is last night's footage" he taped a few more buttons, bringing up multiple images of the different rooms and hallways. "Perhaps we can map where our missing fellows went."
Antauri assumed his normal lotus position as he hovered to get a closer look. At first they saw nothing but just darkness. Then movement quickly caught Antauri's eyes as he looked to the lower left footage. "Gibson bring up security camera 27's position to full screen."
Nodding to the command, Gibson flipped a small switch. The whole team watched as the small box consumed the entire flat screen. Their ocular lens widened as they saw Nova rushing down the hallways. The footage was blurry and did not show too much detail, but they were able to see clear enough the condition their sister seemed to be in.
"Strange…" Gibson spoke out, double tapping the screen to zoom in on the gold warrior. "From what I can tell… blood shot eyes with heavy dropping skin beneath ocular lens… sluggish movements yet moving at a quick haste…" He scratched his head with his metal tipped tail. "I can safely say she is in dire exhaustion yet in quit a hurry."
Otto gawked, "The footage was taken at 3 am. Why would Nova be running out that early?"
Sprx shrugged, "Maybe she and the kid went to meet up to go out on a late night patrol… or perhaps they hit up an awesome party those teens always throw down town."
"Unlikely." Came Antauri's annoyed remark, not the least bit thrilled at the picture the pilot's suggestion painted. "Chiro, and especially Nova, know that running secret patrols without notifying the team is dangerous and irresponsible. Plus Chiro does not 'party'… he has much better things to do then waste his time on such petty self-harming human desires."
"And yet you wonder why Chiro never lets you plan our days off." Sprx counteracted smartly. Rolling his eyes at Antauri's predicable motherly instincts. Being fully aware of Antauri's refusal on anything that might come off as a bad influence to their boy.
Before Sprx could toss out another suggestion that would probably fry Antauri's nerves, a loud chime echoed through their speakers. Looking up, Antauri waved his ghost claws to manually switch the cameras to the robot's foot. The silver simian sighed at the sight of their lawyer's bright red hair. "Seems like our attorney has come in bright and early."
Otto pulled the lever that activated the robot's tumblers and opened its foot hatch; granting their representative passage. "Come on Mr. Willy!" Otto shouted through the mic. Missing the perplexed look their lawyer gave before he made his way inside.
Before Wilson could enter the control room, Antauri looked back to the team. "Whatever is going on with Chiro or Nova we will investigate after we hear Wilson's plans for our court trials…"
Wilson came in carrying a mountain size pile of files and books. Smiling he withdrew himself from their welcomes and sat on the floor. "Good news monkey team!" he announced as he sprawled out all his paperwork on the floor. "I managed to read up on Mr. Isomer's lawyer and so far it seems they do not have much ammunition to shoot at us!"
Gibson raised his eyebrow, "Could you please elaborate that simile a little differently?"
The junior attorney nodded as he whooped out a vanilla envelope. "Now I know it's against protocols in the private trials to spy on the prosecutor. But I managed to dig up some stuff Mr. Isomer plans on throwing at you all. So far it does not seem much, all he has 'dirt wise' on you all is you're not human. But if we can provide evidence that Chiro is living in a healthy environment with a loving family. Then you all have a strong chance."
Antauri smiled till Sprx interrupted his moment of clarity. "Safe environment? I don't think we'll have much luck in that department… seeing is how we fight monsters all the time and risk our lives for the city and all."
Wilson grinned even larger, "True I know they will try and use that against you all. But I know how to counteract that. I can very easily put 'protecting the city' as a service to one's society." Wilson pulled out a book of Shuggazoom's laws and pointed to a large enlisted paragraph.
"Isomer and his attorney cannot hold that against you because if that we're true… that would mean a parent who is a police officer and training their children in the field would also be considered child neglect." Wilson licked his thumb and flipped to the second page, "Chiro may be a minor. But he is old enough to be pursuing a career path, defending the city is a type of law enforcement. So thereby this category would be useless for Isomer to use because it's unethical."
Gibson smiled, "Well that is very true. So we have a chance to build up a good case, but is there anything we DO have to worry about?"
Wilson's smile faded a little as he scratched the back of his head. "Well… a few things that does concern me is your legal status. By law, we have never had a case where an animal-like being has ever tried to raise a child. So Isomer will play the card that animals cannot raise a human. But one good thing about that is Chiro's age… sure he is young and still in need of guidance, but he is not so young he does not know right from young. So this will assist us there. But… there is another thing…"
Closing the book, Wilson stood up and leaned against the wall. "If Isomer ends up proving that he is Chiro's genetic father… then we will have a major issue." He fiddled with his knuckles, "I mean if he can prove that and present that evidence to the counsel… then our chances of success drop below fifty percent. I mean it's bad enough that he can use the 'non-human' law against us, but if he pulls the genetic card then I believe there is nothing more I can do beyond that point."
Otto looked spooked, "Well… well can he do that? I mean he'd have to get DNA samples and everything!"
Sprx nodded, "Yea. Do you know wither or not this fool even has Chiro's birth records?"
Wilson contemplated, "Well I cannot guarantee if he does have that or not. But from what I gathered it does not seem likely. For if Isomer did have the proper evidence, the child custody department would've already nabbed Chiro. Therefor there would be no need for this trial. So I think we're safe there."
Antauri nodded as he sighed, closing his eyes to think. Then he opened them, "Can he get a DNA sample from Chiro?"
Wilson shook his head, "On his own accord? No. Wither or not you are legally Chiro's family; you are still common law care takers. So he cannot forcefully get a DNA test unless he has your approval. Wither or not he gets approval from the court is beyond my knowledge."
Gibson nodded, "So far it seems we are at a fifty/fifty. Where do begin from here?"
Wilson smiled, "Well to tell you all the truth I was not supposed to come yet. But I had to come by to give you all a heads up before this roller coaster can begin. Now that you know what to expect, I strongly recommend you gather as much evidence that shows you all are a supportive family and prepare it for when we go to our first trial. Okay?"
Antauri nodded, "Understood."
As their lawyer left, the team turned to face each other. "Now we should probably return to finding Chiro and Nova."
~Shuggazoom Hospital~
A loud snap of fingers broke the darkness that consumed Nova's world. Groaning, she shielded her eyes from the light exploding in her vision. She grunted as she felt something soft beneath her back and something thin and cold resting on her belly. Opening her eyes fully, she found herself sandwiched in a hospital bed. Before she could inquire, the sight of a raven haired boy caught her attention.
"Nova…" her leader whispered out in relief. "Are you okay?"
"Chi-ro?" she murmured while cupping her bandaged cranium. "What happened? How did I end up-"
"In the hospital?" he finished for her. He sighed as he stood up and sat on the edge of her bed. "Last night I had to… go out for a little bit. A little before dawn I over-heard from BT and Glenny that you were in the hospital." He frowned in severe worry, eyeing her appalling injuries. "Doctors told me you fought off some kind of intruder and was left in a comma. They couldn't tell me exactly what happened, the cameras were shocked. So was hoping maybe you could fill me in?"
Nova leaned back into the pillow, her right eye was clawed shut so she wouldn't be able to open it till it healed. "I…" she stared at the ceiling. "I just remember leaving the robot alone, looking for something… then I fought this… big thing and then nothing." She shook her head, "It's all a blur…"
Chiro bit his tongue, "Why did you leave the robot alone? Weren't you supposed to be asleep?" He hid the small amount of panic in his voice. How did the female wake up from the heavy dose of Serotonin he slipped in her tea?
Nova shrugged, "Well I was but my mouth sort of was still burning from when I burnt my tongue and spilt half my drink. So when I went to get a drink of water, I noticed you were gone."
Chiro's blood ran cold, shock evaluating in his head. "Y… you did what?"
Nova gasped as pain shot through her head. She squeezed her wide forearm as she rolled over. "I can't think right now… ack my head."
Chiro leaned forward and quickly hugged her. Hurt and guilt shredding his heart to a thousand slivers. "Nova… why didn't you call the team? Why did you fight alone?"
She breathed hard, "I couldn't wake them up. Besides lately you were acting strange, so when you were gone I feared the worst. Then with word of some kind of monster running around… I just… I couldn't risk leaving you alone. I rushed to find you, till I fought… whatever that was…"
Chiro lost his breath, "C-can you describe it? The thing that attacked you."
Nova's one good eye shot open. Her body began to tremble as she began shifting around under the covers, eye wide with shrunken white pupils. "Massive, horrible… nightmarish. So cold, no life. It… it…" sweat started dripping from her face, a look of torment crossing her features. "Those eyes… as blue as cosmic space and as bright and blank as moon rocks. I had never felt such… such… agonizing fear."
Before Nova could lose herself in the traumatic memory, Chiro shushed her. "Its okay Nova… its okay," he hugged his monkey tight as he rubbed her back. Trying all he could to comfort her, "You're going to be okay alright? We'll take you back to the robot and make finishing repairs there."
As Nova hugged him, she suddenly noticed something she hadn't caught before. Chiro's shirt was ripped to several pieces, his gloves and shoes were missing and his pants were not in any better condition. But he was wearing a thick jacket that nearly touched the floor. Raising an eyebrow, she looked to her boy.
"Chiro what happened to your clothes?"
Grabbing his jacket he tightened the strap around his waist. Closing the jacket to shield his clothes, "I had a small accident. No need to worry yourself, but for now let's get you home okay?"
Nova didn't respond as she rolled her limb body into her young leader's arms. There Chiro hoisted the heavy monkey up and slowly made his way out there door. He checked his team out and left the hospital. Heading back towards the robot.
A/N: Okay I know this chapter was a tad bit boring. But kind of had to put in some down time and give some explanation on where the trials will be heading and an update on Chiro and Nova's POV.
So anyways stayed tune for chapter 11!
