[Edited] Chapter 9 Blue Bird

"The bluebird carries the sky on his back."- Henry David Thoreau

-Kohana's POV-

"Koh-chan wake up! You're going to be late for school!" I heard someone yell.

"Hmmm….huh?" Slowly opening my eyes, I tried adjusting to the bright light. After a few seconds a shadow loomed over me.

"Koh-chan~" A sweet voice rang through my ears. Wait. What?!

"What the?! Grandma!" I exclaimed, jumping from my bed.

"Good morning dear! Now get ready or else you'll get late for school." She replied.

"What? Go to school?" I raised an eyebrow.

"Yes! Hurry up and get dressed!" And the next thing I knew, she started dragging me towards the bathroom.

"Wha- It's Sunday, Grandma!" I reasoned, looking at her weirdly.

Then she let go of me making me fall to the floor. Face first. "sjkmbs," I grumbled.

"Oh dear me! I forgot!" She said, scratching her head innocently. I lifted my head from the floor and sweat dropped.

"Oh grandma..."

"I'm so sorry dear!"

I sighed, standing on my feet, "It's okay. I'm about to get up anyways."

"No. No. No. Here, as an apology, let me cook your breakfast for you."

"No, it's fine-"

"Perfect! Now go sit in the dining room and wait till I finish, okay?" She said, ignoring my protests. I shook my head but smiled nonetheless and proceeded to the dining room.

"By the way grandma…Why are you here exactly? Isn't your house across the street?" I asked her, making my voice a little bit louder so that she could hear me.

"Well I was just watering the plants and I noticed you haven't left for school so I decided to enter your house and wake you up, but my mistake…I forgot you don't have school today." She replied from kitchen, making me chuckle as I heard sizzling and other noises you make while you're cooking.

"...How did you get in?"

"You gave me one of the keys to your house, remember?"

"Oh yeah..I forgot.."

"Here's your breakfast!" She suddenly exclaimed, waltzing towards me with my food in hand.

My mouth instantly watered as she put a plate in front of me, its sweet aroma entering my nostrils.

"American-styled breakfast?" I asked, looking at MY food.

"Why not? Besides you like bacon and eggs, right?"

I nodded at her as she chuckled, taking a seat across from me, "Itadakimasu!"

After breakfast, grandma and I started talking to each other. Telling stories and sharing experiences that we've gone through in our lives. It was fun especially since I haven't had someone to talk to for a while.

"Well, look at the time! I'm sorry Koh-chan but I have to go now! I still have something to do at home. Bye!" And with that, she kissed my forehead and left my house. I waved at her, signalling my farewell and watched her as her figure went inside her house safe and sound.

'Why is she being nice to me? We're not even relatives.' I thought.

Actually I met grandma the same time I moved here two weeks ago. She was just cleaning her front yard when she noticed me staring at her. At first, I thought she was going to scold me for staring but instead she offered me a welcoming smile, catching me off-guard. After that we became closer. I started coming to her house as came to mine, She gave her keys to me to I also gave mine, She started caring for me and I did too, She treated me as her daughter and so I treated her like a mother/ grandmother. At first, I didn't understand her but I guess now I do, she loved me as her own child. A love that I haven't felt for years. A love that I didn't know how much will last but.. still I will enjoy every second of it.

'Now that you mention it, when was the last time I felt being loved? …Oh yeah.. 9 years ago.' I shook my head and cleared my thoughts as I went upstairs to take a bath. Then I changed into my casual clothing which consists of a pair black jeans, a purple hoodie and purple sneakers.

"Since it's still early, I should take a stroll and maybe visit our secret hideout. What do you think Dago?"

"That's sounds like a wonderful idea, young mistress." Dago agreed.

-Timeskip after the stroll-

Crunch. Crunch.

Walking through the forest and stepping on some withered leaves in the process, I couldn't help thinking about the events that happened during the cultural festival, especially with HIM.

'Ugh. I officially hate, Hibari Kyoya.'

Swish.

A gust of wind flew by me, snapping me back to reality, "Ah."

As we arrived at our secret hideout, I decided to sit down and fix my hair first.

"Young mistress, the lake looks stunning today, doesn't it?" Dago asked.

I looked over at the lake and my eyes widened. It did look beautiful. Wait. Let me rephrase that. It looked enchanting. The sun's rays reflected on its waters as the wind made little waves on the surface. The sakuras' different colored petals danced with the wind as some landed on the waters, creating little ripples as they float and finally the reflection of the whole forest that surrounded this lake was mirrored perfectly while little fishes jumped here and then.

"Amazing.." I said in awe, fascinated by what I am seeing before me.

"Maybe we should call it 'The Lake of Life,' young mistress,"

I nodded at Dago's suggestion absent-mindedly as I neared at the lake.

Sitting on a spot near the water itself, I looked at my reflection. As I reached my hand to touch it, a red colored sakura petal fell on top of my mirrored self creating a little ripple. A small smile made its way to my lips as I slowly retracted my hand and plopped on the soft my eyes, I remembered a song my mother taught me as a child.

'Kazumi-chan! Remember to sing this song every time you feel lonely okay?'

My mother's words echoed in my head as I began to open my mouth.

Ending the song, I opened my eyes, only to find the crystal blue sky above me. So pure, so calming. Reached my hand upwards, my smile widened.

"The bluebird carries the sky on his back.[1]" I quoted my mother's famous saying, letting my arm fall back to my side. And before I knew it, I started closing my eyes once more and finally fell asleep.

Alone. Under the crystal blue sky.

-Third Person's POV-

As Kohana fell asleep, a little blue bird came by flying and noticed the girl's sleeping form. The creature landed on the blacknette's side, glancing at her sleeping face. The bird felt warm and safe as it snuggled beside her and it too fell asleep.
