A/N: Because this story focuses mainly on the pregnancy, there's one more chapter after this …..
Lesson 10#- Deeks and Kensi shouldn't expect a normal birth of their children. Nothing has ever gone normal for them.
36 weeks
"Oh, crap."
It's the last thing Deeks expects to hear from his fiancée on the morning of his birthday. They had both gone to bed early the night before on wonderful, peaceful terms- kisses, a few I love you , 'sharing' a piece of cake that Kensi inhaled in light speed, and Kensi teasing Deeks on his gained weight from shared eating. So Deeks has no idea of why 27 minutes into his 35th birthday, Kensi suddenly shoots up in bed, curses aloud and pushes him hard enough with one hand that he falls off the edge of the bed.
"Kens, what the hell?" Deeks groans as he rolls onto his stomach. Under the bed, he can see Kensi's legs dangling over the edge of her side of the bed. She's panting anxiously, "We have to go, we have to-aaahhhhh! Not today, not today! Deeks, where the hell are you?"
Deeks looks up to top of the bed and begins contemplating if he were to respond to Kensi. It's been nine months of crazy pregnant Kensi. I don't really want to know what 'in-labor' Kensi is like.
"I'm coming. I'm coming." On the floor, Deeks closes his eyes as he hears the floor creak three times before he just knows that she's standing above him. He rolls onto his back and looks into the eyes of Kensi. She has a hand on the bed frame as she exclaims, "Why are you on the floor?"
Choose carefully as Sam would say, "I'm scared?"
Kensi's lips begin to tremble as she pants, "I'm scared too. I can't believe that they're- you mean you're scared of me, don't you?"
"Yes?"
Kensi's face softens before she yells, "Get the car!"
"Ok, I'm going." Deeks pulls himself to feet and darts out of the bedroom. He's so distracted by his split lip and Kensi's labor pains that he's sprinting towards the stairwell in the dark. At the top of the stairwell, he blindly misses the first step as he tries to reach for the light and tumbles forward down onto the remaining stairs. Deeks lands on his back on the landing in the midst of hearing a large pop in his arm.
"Deeks, what was that?" Kensi yells from the bedroom. Deeks grimaces as quietly as he can and answers in the most guilt ridden voice, "It's nothing, princess. I dropped something."
"Are you sure? Because it sounded like-" Kensi suddenly appears at the top of the stairwell and stares down at Deeks. A contraction kicks in and she leans forward and grimaces in pain. Deeks lays his head back on the ground and thinks, I'm going to make a great first impression on the boys.
"Deeks, get up here!"
He sits up and pulls himself onto his feet using his good arm. When Deeks makes it to the top of the stairs, Kensi is laying on the ground with her legs spread while taking in deep breaths.
"Your contractions shouldn't be like this," Deeks says in realization. He lowers himself onto his knees and repeats, "You shouldn't be like this- wait….Kensi, how long have you actually been in labor? It can't be 3 minutes."
The brunette agent looks guiltily at Deeks. " I don't know- maybe three hours?"
"Three hours? Why didn't you say anything?"
"Because I was scared and thought some of the pains were normal," Kensi cries out, " I'm not going to make it to a hospital. I'm not!"
"Ok, ok!" Deeks kisses her forehead and scoots the best he can in front of her legs. "I don't know what to do! I don't know what to do- I'm such an idiot. I'm so sorry!"
"No, no, no! Just be ready- they're coming right now. Ahhhhh! Just be ready!"
"Ok." Deeks extends his arms out and ignores the shooting pain in his arm. He readies himself and says the most important word he's ever said in his life. "Push."
Half an hour later, Kensi and Deeks are lying on the floor of the hallway, each holding a quiet baby in their arms. Born at 12:47am, both boys have just quieted after crying for a few minutes. Kensi's covered in sweat and humming softly as she looks down into the brown eyes of the first born twin in her arms.
"You're so beautiful," Kensi sings softly, "My boys are so beautiful and perfect. So beautiful and perfect."
Deeks is sitting up and curled forward as he takes in his son's smell. He kisses the boy's forward and whisper, " Kensi, I'm so sorry-"
"My boys are perfect, "Kensi looks up to him, " All three of them. My beautiful baby boys, this is your daddy. He is goofy and brilliant and today is his birthday. He'll probably joke about you stealing his birthday when you're older. There is no other person on the world that will love you and take care of you as he will."
"Thank you."
"It's true. Oh- the names! Remember our deal?"
Deeks nods, remembering a conversation from the month earlier.
"How about-"
"No stupid names, Deeks!"
"At the rate and speed we're going at, the babies will be named baby 1 and baby 2. We need some kind of compromise."
"You know what? You name one and I'll name the other. Fair?"
"I love when you talk dirty."
"That makes no sense, you idiot."
Kensi puts her lips to the infant in her arms and breathes in him. "He has my dad's eyes. I came up with a name a couple weeks ago and it fits perfectly- Henry John Blye."
"Hi, Henry!" Deeks calls out in a whisper. "I'm your daddy! Kens, Hetty is going to love this- Henry like Henrietta."
"Exactly." She nudges his arm. " How about baby number 2? Do you see him in you?"
He kisses the quiet infant in his arms. He can see exactly what Kensi claims to see in his eyes and smile- a happy, loving, slightly malicious spark. There's no doubt in his mind that the infant is in hands will grow up to be just like him. "Yes, I do."
Kensi grins brightly. "So?"
Deeks tilts his son to where Kensi can see him fully. "Meet Sam Gavin Deeks. You are officially the little brother, little man." He looks to Kensi when she suddenly starts giggle.
"I'm sorry! I just thought of how Sam will react when he finds out that we named the possible little replica of you the same name," Kensi laughs.
Deeks chuckles softly and adds, "I predict tears of joy. How do you think Hetty will react?"
"Oh, she's going to spoil you!" Kensi excitedly tells Henry, "Your Aunty Hetty is going to spoil you more than she does your daddy."
"She does not."
"She so does."
"Henry, you will soon learn that your mother is stubborn…."
"Sam, your father is a goof."
"They are literally fifteen minutes old and that's already a given. Whoa, is that my cell phone?"
Kensi awkwardly grabs Deeks' cellphone as it rings at their feet. It takes an extra minute but she's able to click the power and speaker phone. "Hello?"
It's Sam. "Everything ok? Michelle woke up with some woman intuition- ow, I was kidding, babe! Sorry, yeah so- is everything ok?"
"Actually, we're sitting in the hallway…holding our boys!" Kensi whispers in excitement. "We had a unique, complicated labor but they came and we are officially parents to Henry John Blye and Sam Gavin Deeks."
Deeks kisses Kensi and listens for a response from the SEAL. There's a yelp of excitement they can hear from Michelle, but nothing from Sam. "Sam?" Deeks calls out.
"Deeks, did you name your son after me?" Sam finally asks tearfully.
"My son was named after two great men- Sam Hanna, a man that who although didn't trust me, he's a great man and has come to care greatly for me. He's also named after Callen, who I think the G in his name stands for Gavin."
"Congrats, guys and happy birthday, Deeks," Sam sniffles as quiet as he can, "Ok, so we'll be there in a few-"
"Take your time," Deeks says. He scoots closer to Kensi and says, "Take your time. We're just going to sit here and enjoy right now. My best birthday ever."
