Chapter 10: Historical Fiction

Pedro puts his phone away and looks at her. "I could have sworn he woke up at, at least six-thirty…" He says and thinks. "He must have been up last night late or something…" He shrugs.

Adriana also shrugs. "Maybe." She then takes her and Pedro's cups to the sink and then she waddles to the living room where the two chicks are watching the movie. Pedro follows her and sits on the couch, though Adriana continues on to the door.

"Where are you going?" He asks curiously.

"On a waddle." She shrugs, opening the door.

"Why?" Pilar then pipes up as she notices her uncle and aunt.

Adriana looks at her. "Because I want to?"

"Me! Me!" Yzel exclaims and holds her flippers towards Adriana. She has gotten bored of this movie and would like to do something else. Adriana gets her with a small sigh.

"I guess we might as well go, too." Pedro shrugs and Adriana sighs a little more. She had been hoping to go on her walk alone, not with a mini circus.

"Are you positive that you'd like to go out with your lovely toes." She smirks.

Pedro shrugs. "It's fine." He says with a glance towards Pilar. "I've got to make sure that you don't end up as a predator's breakfast.

"I can protect myself, you know…" She grumbles and steps out with the baby.

Yzel giggles and holds on to her feathers a little. She now closely looks at this penguin who carries her. "That may be, but you're pregnant!" Pedro argues as he grabs up Pilar and follows her.

Pilar squirms in his grasp, though. "My movie!" She exclaims and looks unamused at her uncle. She had not really wanted to go for a waddle right now.

Pedro looks at the chick. "You can finish it up after we're back, okay?" He says and ruffles her feathers a little and gently sits her on the ground. Pilar gets his flipper with a nod and looks at Aunt Adriana. She thinks that she does not look happy.

Adriana tries her best to ignore Pedro and Pilar and continues waddling with Yzel. "Apparently your uncle does not understand the thought of wanting to be alone for a time…" She grumbles.

Yzel looks at her and giggles. "Siwy."

"Yes. That's what he is. Silly." Adriana smiles a little. She has to say, for such a despicable creature that this chick is kind of cute. The baby giggles some more and looks around at the trees. Adriana looks at the surrounding forest as well before hiding behind a tree. "Shhh." She says to Yzel with a slightly evil grin. The chick gets quiet with a curious look.

Pilar and Pedro follow them, though a bit behind because Adriana had been walking quickly. "Where they go, Uncle Pedwo?"

"Ehm...They should be this way…" He replies a bit uncertain.

Adriana and Yzel stay hidden behind the tree until the other two are really near. They then jump out from behind the tree. "Boo!" The baby exclaims with a giggle.

"Agh!" Pedro exclaims with a small jump.

Pilar darts behind him at first and then peeks around him and giggles. "Founded them!"

He still looks at them, though now unamused. "What was that about?! I was starting to think that you had gotten caught by a snake or something!" He exclaims.

Adriana rolls her eyes with a grin. "We were fine, Pedrrrrrro. I've got my knife."

"Yes, but a knife is only good at close combat! Guns are better!" He then says, shaking his head.

"Haha! Only close combat? You do not know how stupid you sound. Close combat! Ha!" She starts laughing. "No. No, no, no. Knives are great at far distances, even better than a gun if it's in the flipper of a professional. Guns run out of bullet and then you must take up valuable time to reload, no? Knives, they only require sharpening every so often." She laughs. "And if you carry many knives at once, you are just as dangerous as penguin with a gun."

Pedro crosses his flippers, obviously not believing her. "Knives are old fashioned. Guns are modern."

"Not all modern things are better than medieval...Such as torture." She grins. "Those medieval kings had it down pat. The rack, heretic's fork, parrilla, the pendulum…" She grins evilly. "Now torture is outlawed in many places. Where's the fun in that? If anything you military types may do a bit of torture, but nothing on the magnificent scale of history."

Pedro just looks at her for a moment, blinking. "You worry me…" He then simply says and looks away.

"Why? Because I find torture techniques fascinating?" She laughs. "It's not like I've actually tortured...Well, that's a lie. I have, but not nearly as much as straight-"

Pilar looks wide eyed at Adriana and holds on to her uncle. "Y-You hurted penguins?" She gasps, kind of scared.

Adriana looks at her and quickly thinks for an excuse. "In books!" She lies. "Yes, I dabble in the literary arts and I write about how some penguins were hurt via torture."

"Oh…" Pilar says and seems to relax a little. "Why you write about meany penguins?"

"Because I like...Historical fiction?" She shrugs.

"What that?" The chick asks, now completely calm again and no longer hiding behind her uncle.

Adriana looks at her. "Historical fiction is make believe stories based off of real life events that happened some time in history."

"Like unicorns?!" Pilar then exclaims with a wide smile.

'No, not unicorns. They are mythical.' She thinks but fakes a smile and nods. "Sure, like unicorns…"

Pilar smiles widely at her. "Okay." She says.

Pedro looks at Adriana. 'Good excuse.' He mouths to her. She only rolls her eyes when she sees him. "Now, has this waddle been enough yet?" He asks.

"Nope." Adriana snorts a bit and goes back to waddling. "I'm starting to get an idea for a new chapter…" She murmurs with a smirk. "One with stabbing and slowly turning the knife repeatedly." She says with a glance at Pedro. 'That is if you do not leave me be.'

"Sure, write about it all you like, dear." He replies with a look, following her still along with Pilar. "I still thinks guns are better."

They waddle in the forest for a while and before finally returning to Pedro's house. He looks at the clock and then at the two chicks. "Okay, who is ready to go play with Alejandro?" He asks with a smile.

"YAY FINALLY!" Pilar exclaims as she quickly slides to grab her bag and her duck. "Let's go! Let's go!" She giggles happily.

Pedro smiles with a chuckle and gets Yzel. "Alright, alright, keep your feathers on." He laughs and opens the door for her. He and Yzel follow her next door and knocks. It is opened and Pilar charges past her other uncle. "Good morning again, Diego."

Diego nods some. "Yeah, morning." He yawns.

"Were you up late?" He asks curiously as he hands him Yzel.

"Yes and no." He yawns. "No, I went to bed at my usual time, but Alejandro had a nightmare."

"Aw." Pedro replies with a small frown. "Well, anyway, call me if you need to. We should be back in a couple of hours." He says with a smile.

Diego nods and starts closing the door. "Nice toes by the way, Pedro." He chuckles as he shuts the door. "Very flattering."

Pedro sighs some and walks back over to his house. He waddles inside and gets his car keys and looks around for Adriana. "Now where in Cuzco has she gone?" He murmurs as he cannot find her. Then, as he is walking through the hall, he notices that the light is on in the basement and lifts the trap-door. He descends and looks curiously around. "Adriana?" He asks.

"Yep?" She replies as she is looking around.

"What are you doing down here?" He asks.

"Planning." She says as she measures some with a measuring tape.

"Eh...For what?" He asks.

Adriana shrugs and turns towards him. "Well...We have yet to bring my things from Spain here in Peru. I was thinking down here would be a suitable...Office like room?" She says and shrugs again.

"Oh…" He says, and thinks on this. He is not sure about why Adriana would want an office space down in the basement...Or why even she wants an office space to begin with. He decides it is probably something that he does not really want to know about. "Alright…" He says and clears his throat. "Anyway, the nieces are with Diego; we can go to the doctor's now." He rattles his car keys a little to make his point.

"Sure." She shrugs and puts away her measuring tape. "Do you think this would be a safe place for a tunnel?" She then asks, tapping the wall.

"Tunnel?" He asks confused with a strange look.

Adriana nods. "Escape tunnel...I think with us both having enemies and everything that it would be a smart addition." She shrugs. 'Also, for in case I just need to be away for some time.' She adds in her thoughts.

Pedro looks at her still. "I-I'm not sure." He says.

"'Kay." She says and nods. "I think it is...I guess I can investigate more later." She says and waddles over to Pedro. "Now, are we going to get this quack visit out of the way or not?" He nods and 'helps' her back up the ladder and out to his car. "Then can we get lunch?" She asks once they are both in the car.

"But it isn't lunch time yet…" He says as he starts out from the driveway.

"Yes, but I'm hungry again." She says.

"Fine, after the doctor's visit then." He nods and turns on a road towards the doctors' offices.

Adriana is quiet for a time before she looks at Pedro. "Could we get snow-cones? I could really go for a snow-cone." She says. "A rainbow snow-cone!"

"But, there is no substance to a snow-cone...It's ice and flavoring." He says. "You'll still be hungry afterwards."

"I don't care! I want a rainbow snow-cone!" She says.

Pedro sighs some. "Fine." He says. "After the doctor's."

"But I want it now!" She whines a bit.

"No." He says as he still drives. He then glances over at her as she has started sniffing. "You can't seriously be crying about a snow-cone…" He murmurs and sighs. She does not answer and still sniffs. He parks his green Camaro and gets out and opens her door for her. "We can get snow-cones right after this, okay? I promise."

Adriana nods some and then pushes past him to an outside trashcan where she throws up. Pedro watches with a slightly disgusted face and then hesitantly rubs her back some as she leans panting over the trashcan for a moment. She then takes out a wipe for her beak, wipes it and throws it away before waddling into the doctor's office. 'I better not throw up during our wedding ceremony...That would be awkward.' She thinks with a small frown.

"Are you okay?" Pedro asks softly, looking at her.

"Yeah, I'm fine." She says and nods. "Just morning sickness…" She then waddles up to the receptionist to sign in and get the sheet to fill in about why she is there. She waddles with it over to a chair and Pedro follows and sits down next to her. "Credit card?" She then asks and hands her flipper out to Pedro.

Pedro nods and hands it to her. "We need to get you your own…" He mumbles.

"Nah, yours is perfectly fine." She smiles at him and fills in about the card on the sheet. She then hands him his card back and gets out her driver's license. She writes about herself from the ID.

"Your full name is Adriana María Camila Castillo Estrada? " He asks curiously. "You have five names already?"

Adriana shrugs. "I guess, or you could just consider María Camila as just one name but with an imaginary hyphen." She says and finishes filling out the sheet. She puts away her ID and brings the sheet back to the receptionist before returning to her seat.

Pedro smiles at her. "Nah, I think it's pretty just the way it is." He says after she has returned to her seat.

She looks at him for a moment. "Yeah, though I bet it was a mouthful for my mom to shout when I was younger." She laughs a bit.

"I bet." He laughs a little with her. "Though, a pretty mouthful nonetheless." Adriana looks at him for a moment and then gives him a kiss on his cheek.
