Chapter 9: This Is Our Chance
I sat her down on my bed. "Can we talk?"
I can see the worry starting to spread across her face and I felt bad. But I love Ashley and I can't keep denying it.
Ashley told me to come and get it when I'm ready, and I plan to do just that.
I placed my hand over Kristie's that rested in her lap. Her body was tense but it slightly eased under my touch. "It's been an amazing six months Kristie."
She let out a breath that I guess she was holding and stood up from my bed. She walked over to my window and stared out of it. "Did I… do something wrong?" She softly asked.
Oh no.
She thinks she had something to do with this. I don't want her to think that at all.
"No, no! It's not that Kristie. You are the perfect girlfriend. I'm just…"
"Still in love with Ashley." Kristie finished for me. She gazed in my direction and the look on her face shocked me. It wasn't one of anger, hate or disgust. Her features were tender as she gave me a gentle smile. "No one is blind enough to not see the love you two share. I've been waiting for the day you'd break up with me, but it still came unexpected. I fell for you hard Spencer. I don't doubt that you loved me back but you didn't fall as hard for me as you did for Ashley."
Wow.
If Kristie realized all of this then I wonder what Kassidy must be thinking.
Kristie sighed and walked up to me. "It's okay. I just don't want you out of my life. If we can be friends then that'd keep me happy."
"Of course we can." I smiled at her. "Thanks for understanding."
She nodded and I noticed her eyes shifted down to my lips. "Can I? For the last time? I want to have my last feel of them before they can't be mine anymore."
I nodded to her request and she softly pressed her lips against mine. We shared a few light kisses before we finally broke apart. Her hand trailed down my arm and she grasped one of my hands in hers. She lifted it to her lips and placed a kiss on my knuckles.
"Bye Spencer. Go get her." Is the last thing Kristie said to me before she left. It was only when I heard her car pulling out of the driveway that I spoke.
"Bye Kristie."
Ashley's POV
Flashback
I picked up my phone and answered the call. "Spence? What's up?"
"You sang to me and told me to come and get you. I broke up with Kristie, Ashley. If you're ready for me then I'm ready for you." And then she hung up, not even giving me a chance to reply.
I took my phone from my ear and stared at it.
"I've always been ready for you."
End Flashback
"You're breaking up with me?" I couldn't read her expression. It was somewhere between hurt and anger.
I nodded to her question.
"But we had a good 4 months going Ashley. What happened?"
I met Spencer again. That's what happened.
"I'm not gonna lie to you. I can't keep pushing down my love for someone else. It's too deep to ignore."
"Ashley if you loved someone else then why did you date me in the first place?" Kassidy was starting to fume.
She can't blame me entirely for that part. I did tell her no at first. "Uhm… I turned you down that night Kassidy. Over and over. You insisted that I try and still wouldn't go away after I tried so hard to ignore you. I was single and you are attractive, so I gave in."
"I wanted just one night with you Ashley."
"And we ended up working out didn't we?"
"But not for as long as I'd wish we did now that my feelings for you grew." She stared at me dead in the eye and I remained quiet.
"I hope you and Spencer will be happy together." Bitterness dripped through her words as she left my room. I later heard the front door slam and the engine of her car revved to life soon after.
I dialed Spencer's number.
"Hey Ash."
"Can you meet me somewhere?" I picked up two things from off of my dresser.
"Uhm" There was a pause. "I'm babysitting my little brother for a few. You can come over though."
"Okay. I'll be right over."
I drove over to her house and rang the doorbell. I waited, but no one came to answer the door. I tried the knob, and it was open.
"Spencer?" I called out as I stepped into the house and closed the door behind of me. I heard crying noises and found a little boy sitting on the couch in the living room. He doesn't look like a Barbie or Ken like Spencer and Glen does, but he does resemble them. He must be her brother.
I knelt in front of him and he looked at me with wide, blue eyes that were brimmed with tears.
Oh yeah. He's definitely a Carlin.
"Hey kid. I'm Ashley. What's your name?"
He sniffed and wiped his eyes with his tiny fists. "I Chris."
He's so cute that I almost felt a tear wanting to fall.
He held out his arms to me and I stood up and scooped him up. Kids are so trusting. I'm a complete stranger yet he wants me to hold him. He laid his head on my shoulder and quietly wiped at his eyes again.
"Where's Spencer?"
He pointed at the stairs and I soon saw her legs descending from the top.
"Christian?" She called out. "Are you okay? I didn't find it but you're kind of quiet now."
"What was he crying for?" I asked.
She jumped, startled from my voice and held onto her chest as she looked at me.
I giggled softly, finding it kind of funny.
"Ash, don't scare me like that." She sighed and watched me and Christian. "He wants his pillow pet and I can't find the stupid thing."
I sat on the couch and bounced him on my legs, causing him to giggle. Spencer sat next to me. "You two are so cute." She stared at my lips.
Her eyes then averted to Christian. "Chris, let's play peek-a-boo."
"Okay!" His eyes gleamed with excitement then he covered them.
"Peek…" Spencer started, but placed her hand to the back of my neck and pulled me into a hungry and passionate kiss.
After about 30 seconds, she pulled away and we stared into each other's eyes. "A boo."
"Boo!" Chris exclaimed as he uncovered his eyes and Spencer pretended to be scared.
"Ashy no scared?" He frowned a little.
Oh. I didn't know how their game works.
"How can I be scared of something so cute?" I messed his hair and a pinkness gathered in his cheeks.
Nice save, if I do say so myself.
"Hey… I brought something for you." I said to Spencer and reached into my small shoulder bag. "If it's not too late…" I took out her bracelet and the ring. "I still want to keep this promise."
"You kept these?" She softly asked and took them out of my hand.
"Of course I did. I never planned on giving up on us."
I could see tears welling at the base of her eyes.
"Christian." She said.
"Yes Spensher?"
"You can go play with your toys."
"Okay!" He happily bounced off of my lap and ran to somewhere.
Spencer locked the bracelet back around her wrist and twisted the ring between her fingers as she thought.
She took my left hand in hers and looked at me. "This may be a lot to ask Ash but…" She slid the ring half-way on my left ring finger. She looked deep into my eyes and I gazed just as deep back into her. Those eyes that mesmerize me. "I want you to be mine forever."
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes.
I think about her all the time.
I can't be with anyone else because I notice the things that they don't do that she does.
I notice the little things about her that I doubt even she knows.
She makes me feel alive.
She lights a fire in me.
One that can't be extinguished.
I love her.
And I truly think I'll always love her more than anyone who can come into my life.
I can do this.
I pushed my hand forward to let the ring slide on fully, then opened my eyes and focused them back on her. "I want to be yours forever too."
I smiled lovingly at her and her smile reflected mine, but ten times more beautiful.
She put her hand on my shoulder and slowly pushed me back, coming forward as she did. "Spencer what about Chris-"
She shushed me with a finger over my lips. "I just want to kiss you."
She moved her finger and her lips took its place. Our lips slid together with slow force and I relished the moment. It's so amazing to feel her lips on me now that she's mine to keep.
All of her belongs to me. And I'll be dead before anyone can take her as theirs again.
Our legs tangled together and I ran both of my hands through her soft hair, lightly scratching my nails over her scalp. She hummed into the kiss and thrusted her hips down on me. We parted for air soon after. "Chris is going to see us." I whispered against her lips.
"No he won't." She firmly pressed her lips back onto mine and licked my bottom lip. I opened my mouth and we both moaned at the contact of our tongues.
We explored each other's mouths, leaving no spot untouched. She broke the kiss a while after and rested her forehead on mine. "I love you."
"I love you more."
She shook her head. "I love you most."
"Stop competing with me." I threw my hands around her neck and we both laughed. She placed a few soft kisses on my lips then sat up off of me.
"Spensher! Ashy!" Christian ran up to us and grabbed my hand. "Let's play!" I got up and followed after him as he pulled me to his toys. Spencer was close behind me, holding onto my other hand.
"Never letting you go." Is what she mouthed to me when I looked back at her.
I'll never let you go either Spencer Carlin.
Not now.
Not again.
Not ever.
