Chapter Ten – Location
The ride to Titans Tower had been unpleasant for Barbara, with Bruce being in a bad mood they'd spent the entire time in silence. They'd arrived at the Tower in no time and Barbara thanked god that they hadn't caused an accident at the speed they'd been traveling in. Bruce had practically leaped out of his seat, even before the Batmobile had completely stopped, and raced inside brushing past the other Titans almost bowling them over. Barbara had spared the Titans an apologetic look; Starfire was the first to approach her.
"Greetings friend, I am Starfire."
She wrapped her orange arms around the black leather clad girl squizzing tightly. After a minute she stepped back and gave a sheepish smile as Barbara tried to catch her breath. Cyborg smiled brightly at her and decided to introduce the rest of the Titans.
"I'm Cyborg." He gestured over the demon girl who was leaning against the wall her amethyst eyes just visible from the hood she was wearing, "Raven and…" he trailed off looking for his green friend who was nowhere to be found.
Barbara decided it was her turn to speak. "Oh don't worry, I'm well aware of who you are. You're leader has told me much about you."
Cyborg perked up a bit at the statement "He has…?" she nodded; a smile appeared on her face. Cyborg let out a nervous laugh "I hope he told you good things about us."
Batgirl laughed also the tension that had previously been floating around suddenly lightened "Oh yeah he has…mostly."
Raven decided to change the subject "Have been able to find any more information on Robin?"
The laughter died out and Raven felt a wave of guilt roll from her "No we haven't yet but we might be able to now that you've found that note that Robin left. Is there any chance I could have a read over it?"
Cyborg became slightly confused "Why do you want a read over it?"
"He might have put a hidden message in there that you've missed, if Slade didn't know he wrote it there is a possibility that he did."
The cybernetic teen nodded in agreement, now understanding what she meant "Sure, it's in the common room follow me and I'll show you where it is."
He lead her down the hall with both Starfire and Raven following behind him, they were all surprised upon entering the room to see Beast Boy talking to Batman over by the computer. Stafire and Raven both floated over to join in on their conversation. Batman was furiously trying away at the computer trying to open the file that Robin had left on their computer; after several attempts he was unable to gain access to it and he gave out a frustrated sigh and leaned back into the chair crossing his arms over his broad chest.
"Do you know if Cyborg has found a possible location yet?" Beast Boy scratched the back of his head sheepishly a somewhat nervous laugh escaping him but he quickly caught it when Batman cast him a sideward glance. Not a good idea to upset Batman even further.
"Err no I'm not quite sure I haven't asked him yet."
Raven moved next to Beast Boy "I've been trying to search for Robin telepathically all afternoon and…" Batman cut her off
"How are you able to search for Robin telepathically?"
"I've been inside his head before, I've seen what he's seen, I can feel what he feels. Going inside his head had created a special bong between us, and it can only be broken by death."
Starfire sucked in a sharp breath, Batman glanced at her with a curious look on his face, when she didn't say anything he continued. "So you can communicate with him?"
Raven nodded her head "Yes."
Batman raised an eyebrow at her "So you two have a bond…" he didn't like the sound of that.
Raven's eyes narrowed and she gave Batman a look of disapproval. "Not like that."
A silence grew quickly afterward and Starfire decided they needed a new topic to talk about. "Were you able to find any news on Robin's condition." Her eyes were pleading with him, slightly tear filled emerald eyed gazed back at the blank face of the Dark Knight. His face fell, his shoulders slumping and he released small sigh.
"No I haven't. I was hoping that maybe Cyborg had found a possible location for us to search."
"I have." All eyes turned to Cyborg as he walked over to the Dark Knight with Batgirl in tow, Robin's letter still grasped in her delicate hands. Starfire's eyes lit up and a smile appeared on her face. The first real smile the other Titans had seen in days. Raven felt her mood become brighter, almost her normal bubbly self again, she perked up to just as curious as the others. She felt Beast Boys emotions shift next to her and a surge of hope ran through her. Maybe they would find their leader after all.
"Okay, so here's what I've found…"
Robin blinked open his eyes, he was surrounded by darkness. He moaned and slowly sat up in his bed, he glanced out the window the moon shining brightly up in the black sky. He swung his legs over the side of the bed, his feet embracing the soft carpet he pushed himself up, the room spun making him dizzy. His head pounded but he refused to let it bother him, he made his way over to the bathroom, splashing ice cold water on his face to waking him up.
He straightened and quickly regrated it when pain erupted through his chest, he wheezed and gripped the side of the sink his knuckles turning white, and he willed the pain to go away trying to focus on something else. Breathe in… Breathe out he sighed in relief as to pain subsided, he brought his eyes up to look at himself in the mirror; he growled no liking what he saw.
Sapphire blue eyes stared back at him, he noticed his right cheek was slightly swollen and a rather large purple bruise covered the surface of his temple. He had bags under his eyes, from the obvious lack of sleep his was getting. He noticed his skin was pale, his clothes stuck to him like a tattoo and his ebony hair hung in front of his face. How long have I been out for… the last thing I remember was bringing the plant back to Slade.
He sighed, he'd have to ask what happened later; he needed to freshen up before he did anything else. Stripping off his clothes he noticed a bandage had been wrapped around his ribs and with much effort he removed it from his body dropping it to the floor, a wave of relief hit him when his pale skin made contact with the warm water, a shiver run up his spin and his whole body relaxed as he left the water warm him. This was going to take a while.
Clean and re-dressed in jeans and a blue t-shirt he wondered down the halls, his stomach grumbled but he refused to listen to it and continued to search for someone. His feet had unknowingly lead him back to the training room and he poked his head through surprised to see that Slade was nowhere to be seen, he carried on down the hall heading towards the kitchen.
Wintergreen sat at the table, a cut of tea sitting in front of him as his eyes roamed the newspaper. He was surprised to find him up at this later hour. Wintergreen didn't seem to notice him as he entered the room; Dick glanced at the green numbers on the microwave as he passed it, 03:21. He pulled out a chair and sat down to the table, it must have startled Wintergreen, the paper he'd been holding slam down on the table. As soon as he realised it was Dick he was up on his feet in an instant.
"What are you doing up, you should be resting."
Dick smiled warmly at Wintergreen's concerned face; the back of Wintergreen's hand came to rest upon Richards's forehead.
"Are you okay, you look very pale."
Robin just nodded and simply stared at him, why way he so worried about him? He closed his eyes the scent of coffee wafting about in the air, his stomach wailed begging for food.
"Do you want me to make you something to eat?"
"I'm not hungry." He protested, all he really wanted to know was what happened to him and where Slade was at this time in the early morning.
"I believe your stomach begs to differ."
Richard decided to change to subject "What are you doing up so early in the morning?"
Wintergreen cocked his head to the side a small smile appeared on his face "I could be asking you the same question."
Dick laughed but it quickly morphed into a moan as he found that that action didn't help his chest, he sucked in a sharp breath, his face crumpled in pain. A hand on his shoulder brought his attention back up to the old man standing in front of him, and his eyes focused on the worried face.
"Why don't you go back to be. Slade won't be back for another hour of two and it would be wise to…"
Robin cut him off; deciding now was the perfect opportunity to have some of his questions answered "How long have I been out for?"
Wintergreen pulled out the chair beside him and sat down "About three days, I'm surprised to see you up, after Slade kicked you in the temple I thought…"
Again Dick interrupted "I was kicked in the temple…?" he said it more to himself than Wintergreen some memories of what went down between him and Slade flowing back to him.
Wintergreen nodded "Yes, actually I thought he'd done worse to you after I noticed all the cut and bruises over your body and when I found out about your broken rib I was furious… but it appears I was mistaken."
Robin nodded numbly, staring blankly back at the older man's face "Where is Slade now?"
"Slade is…out."
That didn't exactly answer the question he pushed on forgetting he asked the question in the first place "Do you know why he wanted me to retrieve the plant?"
Wintergreen shook his head "No. I wasn't even aware he'd sent you to get it. After I moved you to the infirmary and notice all your injuries I confronted Slade and he told me that he'd sent you to get it. I assume you received those injuries trying to retrieve it?"
Again Robin nodded to confirm Wintergreens assumption "Oh yeah… there was a guard… I had to get passed somehow." A lopsided grin spread across his face, Wintergreen let out a chuckle and stood up pulling Dick up along with him.
"Come. I'll take you back to your room. I want you to rest, you're still healing and I don't want you to gain any more injuries because you are too stubborn to let yourself get some much needed rest."
Richard let himself get pulled along by Wintergreen, and once again he was reminded of Alfred and the way he'd always receive stern looks of disapproval because he refused to get some rest. He was placed on his bed and almost instantly felt drowsy. Lazily slipping under the covers of the bed he noticed Wintergreen had fetched him a wet cloth and he draped it across his forehead, it somewhat dulled his headache.
He closed his eyes and when he open them he notice that Wintergreen was making his way back to the door "Wintergreen." He called out using his left arm to prop himself up. The butler turned waiting for a response.
"I-I…Thank you."
Wintergreen smiled and bowed at the hip slightly he made his way out the door but stopped in the door frame "If you need anything don't hesitate to ask, I'll just be down the hall." With that he left and Robin was left alone in the darkness to his room.
He rested his head against the soft fabric of the pillow, and sighed his body relaxing in the soft embrace of the mattress. He yawned and he let his eyes slide shut his breathing slowed to a rhythmic pace as he let sleep take over.
