Caine's POV

Caine couldn't believe this. Here was a "pacifist" who obviously didn't have the guts to fight, which was useless. Worse than useless actually, if she wasn't on his side then how many of the others would follow suit and leave him? Only some of those with powers were loyal to him, like Bug or Andrew. Others like Dekka or Taylor were only there because they'd been intimidated. Caine knew that if anything serious happened then those people couldn't be counted on. But right then his biggest problem was that he had to somehow train a person like Erin, even if it might be futile.

"Caine hurry up," an irritated Diana interrupted Caine's train of thought. All eyes were on him as they were curious to what was going to happen. "Everyone get back to training, now!" Caine ordered them. He turned his attention back to Erin. "I think you should be able to a bit more than that, because otherwise you're pretty much useless to me." He could see that his bluntness offended her. He didn't care; he hated tiptoeing around a subject and would rather be rude to save time.

"Here's what we're going to do. We'll see if you can make things turn to ice without touching them." "What?!" Erin protested, "I've never done anything like that, before. I can't do that!" Caine tried to conceal his frustration, and decided that the Mr Nice-Guy would work better on Erin. "There's no such word as 'can't'," Caine said with a slight smile. He had heard his PE teacher say that many times before. Not to him, of course, he was awesome at PE. However, Caine had never heard a response like Erin's before. "But cannot is a word. I cannot do that." Caine couldn't help but let the smile fall from his face. "Erin, I get it, you're really smart-" "Oh I wouldn't say 'really smart', I'd say I'm about average." Erin interrupting Caine to give a bout of false modesty was not helping her cause.

"Whatever, but my point is that I don't appreciate you showing how smart you are by saying silly little comments like that." Erin's face showed Caine that he finally got through to her. "Anyway, back to business," Caine looked back over at the rest of the group, who had all stopped and had been watching what was happening. He poured some of the water that Erin had brought into the cup and placed it on a chair. He grabbed Erin's arms and positioned her a metre from the chair. A pathetic distance but she had to start somewhere.

"Begin," Caine instructed her. She looked back with him as if he was crazy. "Begin what?" Caine released an audible sigh. "You're going to freeze the water in the cup from where you're standing. OK?" Caine was now satisfied that Erin knew what was happening. He stood back and watched her, she stood there and raised her arm up at the glass. She closed her eyes and what was probably meant to be a look of concentration made her look as if she was constipated. Caine could hear that everyone was sniggering at her, which was not going to help.

Erin stayed in that position for ages before opening her eyes. When she saw that the water hadn't even slightly frozen she looked over at Caine with a defeated look. Caine made a gesture to signal "keep going". Erin returned to doing her weird face making everyone laugh again. Then she started speaking to the glass! "Freeze", she kept repeating while trying to put some authority into her voice, as if that would help. Eventually she gave up on that and tried to plead with the glass, "Freeze please."

"What?" Diana laughed, "Oh glass, will you please freeze, pretty please." She put on a little girl voice to mock Erin, who did not take it well. "Shut up!" she yelled. Her face was angry and she looked like she could punch Diana. Diana saw this also, but didn't take it as her cue to shut up. "Why, is a pacifist going to hit me?" Caine saw that Erin was about to answer back, which would probably not help the situation. "Diana," he shouted, "You're not helping. She needs to concentrate. Here, let me show you what you should do." He walked over to her and tried to re-position her. He stood behind her and got her to straighten up and to have her hand out in front of her, with her palm towards the glass. "Oooh, get a room," Diana called out. Caine looked at her confused, but then realised that there was mere centimetres between him and Erin. Erin became aware of this too as she started shaking Caine off like a wet dog.

"I was just explaining to her how to stand," Caine said as he walked away. "And you found doing that verbally wasn't sufficient?" Diana asked with a raised eyebrow. "Why, were you jealous?" Caine smirked at Diana, who just rolled her eyes. "Take it away Erin." Erin got back into the position that Caine showed her and closed her eyes again. "Keep your eyes open," Caine told her. "Concentrate on the glass and picture the water frozen in your mind. Keep your mind focused and ignore everything around you." "Anything else you want to say, Yoda?" Caine gave Diana a dirty look to tell her to be quiet.

Yet none of Caine's inspirational words seemed to work. Instead the group stood there for far too long, waiting for something, anything to happen. Inevitably people got bored. "Why are we still here?" Drake growled, "Why can't we leave? Are you even sure that she has powers? Maybe this is Diana's idea of a joke, and she's lied about Erin having powers." Diana shut back at him in a flash, "Oh I'm loving this, wasting my time here. Why don't you think next time before speaking such utter rubbish, idiot. Plus, Caine's seen Erin's power before. It's not my fault that she's so useless that she can't do this."

"Excuse me," Erin spoke up for herself. "I'm not useless, it's just that this is really hard. Plus it doesn't help with your snide little comments distracting me. I'd like to see you trying to do this." Diana just laughed at her and turned to Caine. "Maybe you should quit while you're not ahead. Even if she can do this, what use is she to you? If she's not on your side, what difference will it make? She's too tiny and pathetic to fight." "I'm not pathetic!" Erin cried. Everyone could see how mad she was. Caine was actually worried that there may be a real fight between the two. He knew who his money was on. He just hoped that Diana didn't completely wipe out Erin, who else would he get Maths answers off.

Diana gave a pitying look to Erin, "Listen little girl, why don't you leave us big kids who know how to use their powers alone to work. Playtimes over now, pet." Erin's eyes narrowed and she was silent. Caine knew what it felt like to be so angry that you were lost for words. Diana was usually the reason for it. All Erin could do was sigh and throw her arms up in the air. But out of her right hand came a blue light that headed straight towards Diana's calf. Diana screamed in pain and collapsed to the floor. Caine ran over to her, her face showed that she was in agony. "Are you alright?" Caine asked her. "My leg," Diana pointed towards her calf. Caine rolled Diana's trouser leg up and looked at where the light hit. It looked bruised, as if it had been hit. Caine put his hand on her leg, and it was ice cold.

"I'm so sorry," everyone looked over at Erin, who was close to tears. "I didn't mean to, I've never done anything like that before. It was a complete accident. Please forgive me." Diana sighed, "It's OK, you didn't mean to." This shocked Caine, he expected Diana to be furious at what happened. Caine helped her to into a chair as she couldn't stand on her leg. He looked around and realised that he was the only person who saw the bright side in all this. "Guys you know what this means? Erin can actually do something that's worth mentioning." Caine chose to ignore Diana verbalising her disdain for him. Just because she couldn't look on the bright side.
