Chapter Ten: CDC

I tugged Kearon closer to me as we trudged up the hill as a group; everyone was silent as we walked.
The atmosphere very heavy, weighing on everyone's shoulders.
We were all going to pay our respect and bury loved ones. I'm just glad we didn't have to bury Callie. I still hadn't spoken to Kearon about her. I know that the conversation was the come up, but it would have to wait till after.
As we came to the top of the hill, Daryl was pacing slightly, like a caged animal, very angry, sneering at Uncle Rick and Shane.
"-who the hell is in charge here, what the rules are?"
I stood back with the boys silently.
"There are no rules," Uncle Rick answered.
"Well that's a problem," Lori said with a scratchy tone speaking over Uncle Rick, "We haven't had one minute to hold onto anything of our old selves, we need time to mourn and we need to bury our dead," She whispered, I shifted my balance from one side to the other.
"It's what people do," Lori added, and with that she looked away down at Carl.
One by one the boys buried the dead, but when it came to Amy, Andrea was adamant to do it herself.
She dragged Amy's body over to the hole, Dale watching over her. He tried to help quite a few times but she kept repeating 'I can do it' over and over again.
Everyone shed a few tears, even the Ice Queen herself. Sorry, I mean Lori.
Dale helped an emotional Andrea out of the hole and we all stared in silence, to mourn the dead. To also mourn the ones we have lost.
Merle and Callie, if you're out there, we will find you.

As we made our way down the hill, Daryl walked beside me, his hand on the bottom of my back, guiding me down the hill. It was weird, to say the least, i was still getting used to the idea of how close he was getting but it was comforting. I looked over my shoulder at our other family, watching them pull together, hugging together closely, very close knit, all fine, no one lost.
Unlike us.
I sighed softly before looking back ahead.
"Kelia," I looked over at Daryl, "Yeah," I whispered, squeezing Kearon's hand.
"Have you..." he trailed off looking over at Kearon, I shook my head slowly.
"No … I. I will, can you…," I cleared my throat, "Can you take Leo back to camp," he nodded, rubbed my back slowly before catching up to Leo.
I sniffed and stopped, Kearon stopped next to me, "What's wrong," he asked looking up at me with his clear blue eyes, eyes that were just like mine.
His however filled with pain and sorrow, yet so full of life.
"Let's go for a walk down to the quarry for a bit, I want to talk to you buddy," I whispered pulling him down a familiar path."Kelia, what do you wanna talk about?" Kearon asked as we reached the bottom of the quarry. I sighed looking out towards the sun before bending down in front of him, my hands grabbing his shoulders.
"Kearon, I… me and Daryl… we," Shaking my head I looked him in the eye, "We didn't find your mum and Merle," I whispered, I looked down at our feet. His so small compared to mine, showing me how much of a different there was between us. It was uncann-
"I know,"
I looked up at Kearon, there was fresh tears in his eyes, some spilling over the edge, reflecting me perfectly. I lifted my hands off his shoulders lightly and rubbed his cheeks as he spoke.
"I didn't… I didn't see her yesterday… I kind of thought… maybe you would find… find her, but I know you and Daryl… would have tried your hardest to find her, and I know… you're… protecting me and Leo, I… its okay… I …know… we… will… fi…nd her."
His tears turned into heaving sobs falling in mini waves down his red down in small rivers, dropping from his chin on to his top. Choking on a sob I pulled him into a hug and let him cry it all. He shook in my arms, his tiny little fist balled up in my t-shirt gripping it tight.
Rubbing his back and whispering it was all going to be okay was what I did. Maybe not the right thing to say at the time, but it what the younger kid's need. Yet, it made me realise that the younger kids weren't prepared for this world at all.

When we got back to the quarry after our short chat, but emotional journey, everyone was surrounding the fire.
I stood close to a tree, Kearon gripping my hand tightly as I searched the camp for Leo and Daryl, quickly spotting them stood over by the tent.
Shane and Uncle Rick were not far behind us as they came wandering up to the camp meeting. Pulling Kearon along with me, I walked over to the boys and smiled in greeting as Shane addressed the camp.
"I've, err, I've been thinking about Ricks plans, look there err, there are no guaranties, either way, I'll be the first one to admit that," he looked down at the cap held in his hands, fiddling with the top.
"But, I've known this man for a long time, I trust his instincts, and I say the most important thing here is that we need to stay together," he paused to look around the group, his eyes lingering on me longer as he said, "For those of you that agree, we leave first thing in the morning," He looked away from me and around at the others, everyone silent.
"Okay."

The next morning was quite a loud morning, everyone were getting things ready to move out. Daryl taking care of our tent and some of our belongings to his truck, while I packed the rest of the bags. I divided everything equally into bags in case someone got lost they had supplies and a weapon to survive.
I just hoped no one did but it was a precaution.
I didn't even like the fact I put one of Daryl small handguns in Kearon's backpack, but I knew he might need it. However I knew I would have to get Daryl to teach him how to shoot, there was no way I was going to leave him defenceless. Once I had all the bags sorted I looked around the empty tent.
This morning, bright and early and way before Kearon woke up I cleared out the rest of Callie's tent and left it with Daryl to put away. To be honest I didn't even want to think about her, see her things would have made me want to cry even more for Kearons sake and failing in finding her. So now I stood in an empty tent, the only last thing we need to pack.
"Y'all set?" I looked over my left shoulder at Daryl, he was stood in the doorway, half in half out, in his guarded half stance. He was really on edge, even Kearon could see it.
"Er, yeah, I think so," he nodded and grabbed two of the bags of the floor, "Come on then," I nodded and picked up the remaining two and followed him out the doorway. I watched him quickly put the two bags in the back before heading back over and started putting the tent down.
I sighed, it was time to go.

"Alright everybody listen up, those of you with CB's we are going to be on channel forty, let's keep the chatter down okay," Shane spoke, from one end of the circle, he stood by Uncle Rick.
I stood by Daryl's truck with the boys, Leo stood to my right while I held Kearon in my arms. He may be nine and extremely heavy but he always wants to be with me, so I deal with the strain and kept him there.
"If you got a problem, don't have a CB, can't get a signal or anything at all, you're going to hit your horn one time, that will stop the caravan. Any questions?" I looked over at Uncle Rick, standing by his side. Quiet, which was unusual but this was originally Shane's camp, so that's probably why he was letting him speak instead.
I sighed quietly when Morales spoke up.
"We, uh," he paused and swallowed, "We arn't going," I nearly dropped Kearon when he said it, my hands tightening around the small boy when I heard the man that saved us wasn't coming along. Everyone else seemed to be in shock, even Daryl.
I tightened my grip even more.
"We have people in Birmingham, we wanna be with our people," his wife said, circling her arm around her daughter's shoulders, pulling her close.
"You're on your own, you won't have anyone to watch your back."
Morales seemed to understand that, he looked towards me, "We'll take the chance," he glanced over at Uncle Rick and said, "I've got to do what's best with my family."
Uncle Rick and Shane looked at each other before bending down and getting out a gun and some ammo.
I let Kearon down slowly, and made my way over to the family just after Uncle Rick gave them the gun.
I looked at his wife, "Thank you all, for everything," she sobbed and I beat Aunt Lori to a hug, "Thank you, thank you so much," I cried hugging her tight, she sobbed against my shoulder.
"I hope you find Callie," she whispered before letting me go.
"Thank you." I gave the kids a hug to, a kiss on their heads as well as I let everyone else say their goodbyes including the boys. I walked over to Morales and smiled, "Leaving us," I whispered, tears falling free now.
"I have to," He replied smiling sadly at me.
I smiled sadly back, "I know," I whispered as he pulled me into a fierce hug, "Thank you so much, without you, I, we wouldn't be here," I cried holding him tight.
"My brothers wouldn't be save they would be like my mot- a monster, me probably one too," I gripped his top hard, my hands rolling into fists.
"It's okay, I would do it all over again, if I kept you alive for those boys, just make sure your find Callie and you keep you and those boys save, you hear," he said sadly, holding me at arm's length. I nodded wiping at my eyes, "I'll try."
He chuckled, "You will," I chuckled sadly too, hugging him one last time.

I stared out the window as the truck began to move, Kearon snuggled on my lap. Leo leaning into my shoulder in between me and Daryl as he drove.
I watched the Morales leave, driving in the other direction, forever leaving us. Hopefully we'd see them again.
No, we will.
We were second to last in the line of caravans, Shane behind us bringing up the rear. I sighed sadly tugging Kearon closer. "You okay," Daryl asked, his voice deep and gruff.
"Fine, just… fine," I looked over towards him, and he glanced towards me.
"Okay," he whispered his hand tightening on the wheel, "You boys okay?" he asked, Leo shrugged, "Could be worse," he whispered snuggling into my shoulder.
"Kearon?" I looked down at the boy, his small face looking up at me with red rimmed eyes, and tear tracks down his face.
"Of course, with you and Daryl I will be just fine," I chocked on a sob and smiled, "Love you little man," He snuggled closer to me and I glanced towards Daryl out of the corner of my eye, he watched silently, eye on the road at the same time.
"Love you too,"

It has been an hour since we had to leave a feverish Jim on the side of the road.
Letting him turn by himself and die to be with his family.
Another emotional journey we have to take, leaving loved ones behind.
A repetitive thing, something that would never stop in this type of road now.
It was another stab in the heart, knowing we were leaving Jim just like we left Callie and Merle.
We will find them someday, I know we will.

The caravan came to a shuddering halt as everyone grabbed their guns and got out. I slowly pushed the door open staring out at the scene in front of us.
Bodies piled and littered upon one another, a very sight to behold.
I looked through the windscreen as everyone got out their respective cars. Everyone faces pensive, worried, shocked at what we might find but disgusted at what we saw. I handed Leo his katana, and grab my bow and arrows and followed Daryl out the car, Kearon safely in front of me with Leo protecting him in the front.
Daryl walked ahead of us, protecting us while I brought of the rear of our little band of four as we followed the group into the CDC. There were bodies lying everywhere outside the building, military enforcement's and equipment lying around from guns, to gear, to people.
It wasn't looking good for the CDC at all.
"Keep it together." Shane called out as we cautiously weaved our way through decaying lumps.
"Almost there," Uncle Rick and Shane repeatedly said before we came to a stop by a set of steels shutters.
We scanned our surroundings, looking for possible signs of movement.
No sign of walkers.
Yet.
I looked down at the boys, "You two do not leave my side at any point, you stick to me like glue have you got that?" I asked and they boy looked up at me and nodded, Kearon's fingers threading through my belt hoop. Daryl looked back at me, "That counts for me to," he grunted, before scanning around us again. Shane and Uncle Rick messed with the shutters, banging on them trying to get them to move, lift them, arguing about which way but to no avail.
"There's nobody here," T-dog whispered in shock.
Uncle Rick paced back, "But why are these shutters down," I gulped and pressed Kearon nearer to my body, my bow ready. Leo taking up side next to Daryl, watching as well.
"Walkers," Daryl shouted and whipped my head round to see the one on his side, "Yeah, walkers," I muttered, shooting my arrow at the one approaching from my side.
The child sobbed, and Kearon clung to me as I reloaded. You could Uncle Rick panic as Daryl shouted at him, and the children sobbing and the adults moaning and shouting at Uncle Rick.
It was all a big confusion, Daryl grabbed my arm tightly and began pulling me back towards the cars. Kearon clinging onto me now, Leo following Daryl's lead.
Everyone began moving when Uncle Rick shouted, "The camera it moved," Shane tried to pull him away. "You imagined it," Dale spoke.
Shane tried talk Uncle Rick out of it but I ran over, letting Kearon hold Daryl.
"If he said it move, it moved," I snarled pushing Shane back.
Shane sneered back at me, and Uncle Rick push me back before started banging on the doors, pleading to the CDC, asking for us to be let in.
Begging.
I sobbed quietly moving back towards Daryl who pulled me into a one armed hug.
"You're killing us," Uncle Rick shouted while being pulled away by Shane.
"YOU'RE KILLING US." He screamed.
With a load screech the shutters rose open a light, blinding us all.
Shocked and completely amazed we looked around the group before bustling inside.

What do you think?
