Day 10; Orange
(Kevin / Lola)
With nothing to do after school, Kevin decided to hang out on the steps before rushing home for no reason. In this time of spacing and enjoying the Autumn weather, his phone chimed with a notification. He pulled it from his back pocket and swiped to find that one of his Star Wars apps wanted his attention. Might as well give it.
A lot of these apps were not made to challenge his skill or intelligence, but they were Star Wars. That's good enough a reason to swipe and tap mindlessly for a few hours a day. And some were those addictive games that just happen to have a skin of something you like. Like this one. Tap. Tap. Tap. Out of moves. Try again. Yeah, how energizing.
"What's that?"
Kevin turned his head to the voice over his shoulder, finding Lola squatting close behind him with her eyes on his phone. Their noses inches from touching, he turned back to his screen quickly.
"Just a game." He answered absently and not anxiously. At least he hoped. His focus went to regulating his heartbeat and the heat on his face. The one time he decides to switch up his routine, he somehow gets the attention of one of the popular girls. Yep, sounds right.
"Cool," she spoke up, moving next to him. "I've got a ton of games like that on my phone. Great for wasting time, right?"
"Yeah." he spoke, locking his phone and looking to her. He wasn't quite sure how to act. Should he give all his attention? Did she want something, or just saying hello? Maybe she needed the homework for one of their classes.
"S'cuse me- sorry!"
Someone rushed by, causing Lola to squeeze in closer to Kevin on the steps. She seemed comfortable, not putting distance back between them but instead striking up new conversation.
"So, you waiting for someone?"
"Oh, no. Just…" What? Being a loser sitting on your phone after school? No. Hm.
"Wasting time?"
This girl has nerve. It's so refreshing. She stared ahead of her.
"Yeah, me too. I've got nothing planned and the mall just doesn't sound exciting today. At least not with the same crowd. Maybe someone else." Her voice trailed off. Hmmm.
"So, Star Wars. I don't know much about it, and honestly I feel like if I tried to learn it would just all go over my head."
This made Kevin smile. He felt like any other girl would've taken his quiet nature the wrong way, but it's like she sympathized. Who knew Lola was so down to earth?
"Anyway, lightsabers seem cool."
She went on carrying the conversation; talking about things she didn't know and things she did, letting Kevin speak if he had anything to say. She was right about not having the mentality for Kevin's long winded attempted explanations. She did her best, but preferred when the conversation kept moving and was about something she could speak on as well. As the hours passed, Kevin was able to hold as much of the conversation as Lola and many topics were covered. Eventually, he got up the nerve to ask;
"What made you stop to talk to me?"
She smiled, looking at him before looking down.
"Just… wanted to."
What an interesting girl. He looked up to find the sky lit with orange.
"Hey, the sun's setting."
"Yeah."
"Mind walking me home?"
He looked to her as she stood, doing a quick stretch.
"Sure." he said, getting up himself.
