A/N: Sorry for the wait. College, life, etc...
Weeks passed and Claire was now about eight and a half months pregnant and showing and feeling every single bit of it. Dr. Perks had her officially on bed rest and it was driving her crazy. Whenever she got out of bed or off the couch, her friends were always there to stop her. Claire didn't mind them helping her with the big things but it irritated her when they wanted to do every little thing for her too like walking. It may be a little uncomfortable and difficult for her to be up and about, but she needed to move around at least a little.
On the bright side, the babies were healthy and on schedule. They kicked, moved around, and more. Although Dr. Perks tried at nearly every appointment to determine the genders, she couldn't but she was pretty sure that at least one was a girl. This made Claire cry. She'd always expected she was having a girl but knowing it was real was so much more amazing.
Jason had been there to and had smiled at the news. He'd been around a lot more but Claire had no idea what he hoped or wanted their children to be. She, and her roommates, had been getting to know him over the past weeks and it was turning out to be an interesting study. He liked water over soda, books over television, sometimes, video games over most things, and basketball over football. He had a warped, twisted sense of humor that made Claire uneasy at times but made Shane, Eve, and Michael laugh. He could be distant, cold, and lost in his own thoughts at times but could also be outspoken, full of laughter, and sweet. He loved being affectionate towards Claire and their unborn babies. He loved stroking her belly and feeling their kicks. He also liked to do things for Claire like bringing her food, keeping her entertained, and etc.
But as good as a guy he could be, Jason also had a dark side. There would be times when everyone would be hanging out together and someone would mention something and he would just close down. A shadow would fall over his face and he would just shut down completely. He wouldn't answer to his name and would just sit there staring off into space. Claire got the feeling that his life hadn't been a good or happy one-like most Morganville natives-and no one knew exactly how unhappy. Claire, specifically, got a horrifying glimpse into it around the middle of her eighth month.
They'd all been sitting around, Jason included, joking around and sex had somehow come up. They'd talk about their experience and Claire, who hadn't really thought about it before, was surprised to realize that he number was three: Shane, Jason, Oliver. They had all talked about it openly but when it came to Jason, he shut down. Regardless of how much they asked, he remained quiet. Shane, who still harbored animosity towards Jason, smirked.
"Come on dude: it's okay. We will not judge you if Claire is the only girl you've been with."
Claire sighed. "Shane…" She groaned but Jason stared at him and his answer was dead panned.
"No. Claire is not the only person I've been with." With that, he pushed off the couch and silently went up to her room. Though a little confused by his confession, she glared at Shane.
"What?"
"That was uncalled for."
"I was just joking around Claire. Don't be mad at me because he can't take a joke."
"You know how he gets when he's like that." Grunting, she hoisted herself off the couch and Michael was in front of her immediately. "Would you take me upstairs so I can talk to him?" He nodded and she was at her door within seconds. "Thanks." She went in her room and saw Jason sitting in a chair by her bed looking off into space. "Hey."
He looked at her blankly. "Hi."
After waddling across the room, because honestly: she was too big to do anything but waddle, she sat on the bed close to him. "Are you okay?"
He shrugged. "Yea. I'm pretty use to Shane being a dick by now."
She frowned. "He'll get better after he gets over his grudge. But there's something I don't understand. The night we were together you told me that I was the only person you'd ever…"
His eyes flashed to hers and the intensity scared her a bit."I told you that you were the first girl I've been with, not the first person."
It took a minute for that to sink and, when it did, she tried not to be judgmental. "You've been with guys?" He nodded. "Does that make you gay or bisexual?" He shook his head. "But you-"
"You're not the only one who has been forced to do something, Claire." It took a second to understand and she gasped and covered her mouth. "Brandon liked girls and he really liked Eve. He wanted Eve since she was about twelve but even Morganville has rules against such things with children. So she was asked to make a decision as soon as she turned sixteen. She said no almost immediately. He was upset at her outright refusal and, angered, turned his sights on me thinking that I was the next best thing."
"Jason-"
"My parents, scared that the vamps would take it out on them for Eve's actions, turned a blind eye and let him have his way."
Being the over-emotional pregnant person she was, Claire's eyes teared up. "But you were only fourteen!"
He nodded and shrugged. "Brandon didn't care. The rules about boys and girls are different. Girls are considered old enough when they're sixteen, but boys, boys are considered old enough at fourteen so the vamps didn't interfere. I feared the nights because he would come into my room and either take me or…" She held up a hand and he stopped. "Sorry. I always used to blame Eve for what happened to me. If she had just waited on giving her decision or something, I wouldn't have been put through that."
"But now?"
"Now I understand a little bit more. She thought our parents would protect me but they didn't. They were more worried about themselves than their children. They wanted to please the vampires so much that they gave up their son and alienated their own daughter."
Wiping her wet cheeks, she shook her head. "That's horrible. How could they do that to their own child?"
"They were just horrible parents. I love them, but they were." He stared off for a few minutes before suddenly moving to sit next to her on the bed where he stroked her belly. "We won't be like that." He promised.
"Of course not, Jason! We'll love them both more than anything."
"Yea, and we won't let any of the vamps get their fangs into them."
"And we'll try our hardest to get them out of Morganville."
He nodded. "We'll be the best parents we can be."
Smiling sadly, she hugged. "We will."
That talk had made his character so much clearer to Claire and she couldn't find it in herself to distrust him or even connect him to the horrible person she once thought he was.
Now she was sitting in Michael's amazing chair reclined with her feet elevated. It was kind of comfortable but nothing was ever fully comfortable when you were as pregnant as she was. One baby was constantly on her bladder while the other kicked her ribs sore. Thankfully for now, both were pretty calm. Maybe they were sleeping? She hoped so. Although she was feeling a little worn out, she felt even more excited.
Two more weeks. Two more weeks until they both were here, until she could hold them and see them and touch them. She couldn't wait and although she was super nervous about taking care of two babies but they were hers (and Jason's) and she would love them regardless. She cradled her belly, the huge thing it was, as Eve hovered.
"You could be in labor." Claire sighed. They had been having this argument all morning.
Claire had woken up with a few pains and the babies were lacking in movement. Eve immediately jumped to Claire being in labor. Claire thought she was overreacting.
"Calm down, Eve. Don't worry! Don't you think I'd know if I were in labor? I haven't felt any contractions yet." She stated calmly and Eve shot her this look.
"Some people don't feel them until a lot later. C'mon Claire! Let me take you to the hospital." She pleaded.
Claire shook her head. "You've been reading too many 'What to Expect When You're Expecting' books."
Eve look exasperated as she turned to Shane who sitting on the couch playing a game. "Shane help me out here. You read the books too."
He shook his head. "I'm not getting into this. If Claire wants to give birth on the living room floor, let her."
"Michael?"
Michael, who had just walked in, shook his head. "It's whatever Claire wants."
"Jason?" She tried as a last resort.
He'd been competing with Shane in whatever game they were playing but paused it. "Well, it wouldn't hurt to go and check. I'm sure Michael and Shane wouldn't like cleaning up blood and other disgusting fluids off the floor." Both guys frowned.
"Maybe it would be better to go."
"Michael!"
"Yea."
"Shane!" Eve smiled victoriously at Claire.
"Fine. Fine!" Claire huffed and started to push up out of the chair. As Michael moved over to help, she murmured little complaints as she stood but stopped abruptly. Michael rubbed her back as her hands went to her abdomen.
"Claire, are you okay?" She shook her head.
"If you and Shane don't want to be cleaning 'fluids' off the floor, you should probably get me to the hospital." Everyone was quiet until Eve squealed.
"I knew it!"
I know it's short but I hope you still enjoyed it. I'll try to update soon!
