Morning Sickness and Sutures.
Chapter 10
As it happened the person – who saw but they never saw – never came forward, never said anything. That person was Callie and she never said a word.
No one knew found out the paternity of Lexie Grey's unborn child until the day she went into labour. A month before she was due – a day before she was to go on maternity leave and while she was in surgery.
She was holding the clamp in a man's abdomen and her waters broke. She groaned but Dr Bailey took it as a sigh.
"Dr Grey is my surgery boring you?" she asked.
"No Dr Bailey but my water just broke," she answered.
Dr Bailey glanced up at the gallery.
"Kepner come down here, scrub in and hold the clamp," said Bailey.
"Coming," shouted Kepner.
Lexie started to breathe in and out while holding the clamp.
"You have contractions?" asked Bailey.
"Just starting to come on more," answered Lexie. "I've had a backache all day I thought it was being on my feet all day."
"Lex you want to pass the clamp over?" asked April.
"You may want that water cleaning up before you stand in it," said Lexie, passing over the clamp.
"Go it'll get dealt with," smiled April.
"Good luck Grey," called Bailey, as Lexie hurried out of the OR.
She pulled out her phone and dialled Meredith as she got in the elevator and headed to his office.
"Hey aren't you meant to be in surgery with Bailey?" she asked.
"Yeah I was my water's broke," said Lexie.
"Does Mark know?" asked Meredith.
"I'm going finding him now. Hoping he's in his office but everyone will know soon enough so it probably doesn't matter where he is," answered Lexie, she heard talking in the background.
"I'm in the basement I'll come up now," said Meredith.
"See you soon," answered Lexie. "God."
"Contraction?" asked Meredith.
"Yep," said Lexie, hanging up.
"I've gotta go Lex is in labour," smiled Meredith, running off.
"Why would McSteamy need to know?" asked George.
Cristina groaned. "You know Bambi your stupid sometimes."
"Dr Sloan's the father?" asked George.
"I don't know but I'm guessing so," answered Cristina.
Izzie and Alex appeared.
"Where's Mer running off to?" asked Izzie, sitting down.
"Lexie's in labour," answered Cristina.
"She never slept with him. I would have known everyone would have," said George.
"What's up with him?" asked Alex.
"Mer asked Lexie if Mark knew," answered Cristina.
"Lexie and McSteamy?" asked Izzie.
"We'll soon find out," answered Cristina.
"Damn it," muttered Lexie, as she tried the door of Mark's office. Then she bent over as a contraction rippled though her. She breathed in and out – gripping the door handle – until it passed.
"Little Grey?" asked a voice.
Lexie looked up.
"Dr Torres hi," she said.
"You ok?" asked Callie.
"I'm in labour," she answered.
"You're looking for Mark?" asked Callie.
"Oh um I," Lexie stuttered.
"Relax I saw you two leaving a few a weeks ago," smiled Callie. "You should get up to OB and page him."
"Page who?" asked Mark.
"You," answered Lexie.
"Is everything ok?" asked Mark. "The baby?"
"Babies entering the world today," answered Lexie.
"Huh?" asked Mark.
"She's in labour you idiot," answered Callie. "Babies?"
"Oh yeah OB would be a good idea then," said Mark.
"We need the bag," groaned Lexie.
"I'll go get it later," answered Mark. "Come on OB."
Lexie nodded and they headed to OB Callie tagging along. Meredith was in the elevator. At the next floor the Chief and Derek stepped in.
"Maternity leave Lexie?" asked the chief.
Lexie nodded.
"And paternity," said Mark. "I've been meaning to tell you."
"Your taking about three months aren't you?" asked the chief.
"Yeah," answered Lexie. "I may come back sooner for a few hours a day if that's ok."
"We'll work it out," said the chief. "Two weeks Dr Sloan?"
"Yeah," answered Lexie.
"Well congratulations and good luck," answered the chief, before he got off the elevator.
"Ow!" shouted Mark. "You've got a strong grip."
"Don't complain I'm going to pushing your childrenarrr out," muttered Lexie, though a contraction.
"Children?" asked Derek, Meredith and Callie.
"Hey Derek can you phone mum at some point?" asked Mark.
Derek nodded.
They stepped out on the OB floor.
"I hear we have someone might be giving birth today," said the doctor.
Lexie nodded.
"Well let's go examine you," she smiled.
"Lex once your check in I'll go get your bag," said Mark.
"I can go," said Derek.
"No you'll sneak a lot in the nursery," said Lexie.
"I've already seen it remember," answered Derek.
"Oh yeah. Fine you go. It's by the front door," answered Lexie.
Mark tossed him the keys.
Lexie was two centimetres dilated, she was checked in but it was going to be a long while until her babies would be born.
