"What's wrong with my tongue
These words keep slipping away
I stutter, I stumble off
Like I've got nothing to say"
–Things I'll Never Say, Avril Lavigne.
Piper had a lot of awkward moments in her life, but this one was probably the worst so far.
She was sitting in a black couch, next to Jason, drinking a cup of hot tea, trying to calm down. Jason looked a lot more serious and relaxed, and she envied him for it. His blue eyes didn't show a lot of emotion, but by the expression in his face (Piper somehow knew people's feeling with only looking at them) she could tell he was a little nervous, too.
Silena and Charles Beckendorf were sitting in an opposite couch. They had serious expressions, but Silena had that weird glint on her eyes that scared Piper. Even if she was a good girl, Silena tended to do unexpected things to make them even more famous.
"So, this is an important thing and I expect you two will understand why it is," Beckendorf said, shifting his gazed between her and Jason, maybe trying to know what they would do.
"Oh, get to the point now, Charlie," Silena waved it off carelessly. Jason seemed surprised, maybe because she called him 'Charlie' instead of Beckendorf, like everybody did.
Beckendorf licked his lips. "Umm, right," he focused his gaze on Piper, apparently trying to avoid Jason's eyes; maybe he didn't want to explain why a girl called him by a silly nickname. "We decided to promote the 'love song project', and make it public now, since you both already have half the song, and Thalia and Nico are almost finishing it,"
"What about Percy and Annabeth?" Jason asked, his eyebrows together. Piper thought he looked cute, but quickly pushed it to the back of her mind.
"They just started it," Silena explained, analyzing her nails. "They are kinda out of it," Piper opened her eyes, surprised. Annabeth was the most responsible person she knew, and the most dedicated to the music, even though she always dreamed to become an architect.
"Anyway," Beckendorf retook. "We decided you two have to 'date'" he made air quotes, but it didn't make the surprise less surprising. The silence fell over them as Piper tried to process everything.
Date Jason Grace? It would be a dream for every girl, and she already admitted to Thalia he was really handsome, but she didn't want to date a boy who she only met a week ago. Besides, the press would be over them all the time, the magazines would write pages about them and Jason's fans would hate her, and write or say awful things about her.
"It will be all fake," Silena added, like if that changed things.
'OF COURSE IT WILL BE FAKE! I'M NOT DATING ANYONE ONLY FOR PUBLICITY!' Piper wanted to yell at Silena. How could she be so mean at her? Piper still wasn't over Dylan, her last boyfriend, nine months ago. Of course, she wasn't crying or depressing over him, but she didn't want to date another superstar. She already knew it would end in a disaster.
'It's false!' A voice inside her head complained.
'Still! I'll have to kiss him maybe!' she reasoned.
'Like if you don't want to!' the voice said.
'Shut up.' Piper ordered. But that annoying voice had something else to say.
'Look at him. Does he look to you like a bad person?' Piper bit her lip. She learned appearances almost never said the truth. She eyed Jason by her peripheral vision. His short hair shone with the light that came trough the window, his electric blue eyes reflected the engines inside his head, processing the news. The white shirt he wore let her see his muscular body. He had a little scar over his lips, which made Piper wonder how he got it.
"I don't have problems doing it." He said, bringing Piper back to earth. She looked at him like if he was insane, but he shrugged.
She was shocked. Even if all that was false, they didn't know each other. What would they do? What they would talk about in their 'dates'? Piper knew those were silly things to worry about, but she couldn't help it.
Silena smiled. "Awesome. Because now, you have to go to Central Park and have a romantic picnic for lunch. Hope you don't mind, I already have straw basket with sandwiches and coke inside."
Piper opened her eyes widely. "Excuse me? I didn't agree yet." It was the first time she was angry with Silena. What kind of friend sent you with a hot guy in date? Not your usually ones. Silena rolled her eyes.
"C'mon Piper, it's not like you'll do it for a long time. Besides, you're gonna tell the press you aren't dating, and people will be more interested, wanting to know what'll happen." 'Damn,' Piper thought. Silena was oblivious to other things, but she sure knew how to get people intrigued.
Piper pursed her lips. Silena was right, but… she wasn't sure. She wished to be Annabeth to know what to say. She always looked always so confident, and wise…
"I don't want to do it." Piper said, thought inside she wasn't so sure if she really cared.
Silena, Beckendorf and Jason looked at her confused. They knew she had no reason to reject, so why? Piper rolled her eyes.
"What?" she snapped.
"Piper, I understand, but…" Jason, the person she expected the least to speak, said. "It's not like you're going to do things you don't want," She blushed.
Tough she wasn't a virgin anymore; it made her uncomfortable when Jason said that. Did he really think she didn't want to do it because she didn't want to sleep with him?
Talk about awkwardness.
"I know, but still…" Piper said, avoiding eye contact. "I'm not sure. Besides, who says this project needs to be promoted? Just send anyone to a program and everyone will know,"
Silena and Beckendorf exchanged a glare. Piper knew they were considering her words. She tried to hide a smile, Reyna and the girls always told her she was very persuasive when it came to get what she wants.
She noticed Jason looking at her, and when she turned her head to him, he quickly looked away. Did she saw a little blush on his cheeks?
"Either way, this just would make more publicity for both bands, and in the end, it will benefit every one of us," Silena said after a while. She was very persuasive too.
Piper tried to think to an answer for that, but she found none. She wished she was Annabeth again, that girl never loose a discussion. Both managers and Jason looked at her expectantly.
"Ugh, fine." Piper agreed reluctantly. Silena jumped of her seat and clapped like an idiot, smiling and squealing. Piper wondered if Silena had other intentions besides the economic benefit.
Silena grabbed a basket and handed it to them, smiling. "Now, you're both off to Central Park to that romantic picnic. Remember, you're not dating yet!"
The way she said it, made Piper confirm her suspicious about Silena's double intentions.
…
Annabeth ran trough New York's streets, trying to follow the blonde's head without being noticed. She hided behind plants, got inside stores, she even bought a newspaper to hide; every time Luke turned to assure nobody was following him.
'Where are you going?' Annabeth thought. She had put on a hood to try to disguise, but anyone could recognize her if their gave her a second look
She thought about all the possibilities. Would he go to eat alone? Was his family really there and he was going to see them? Was him going to buy her a present? That one could be, considering her birthday was in four days. Was he going to buy an apartment and surprise her because he would stay there with her? Was he planning something romantic? A billion of ideas went trough her head at the same time, and it made her head ache.
The worst thought was that if he was cheating on her.
She remembered how hurt she felt when she saw Percy kissing Rachel Elizabeth Dare, the 'nice' redhead of the camp. Rachel was so pretty, so slim, so perfect, Annabeth remembered envying her, because Rachel got Percy to notice her as something more than friends, when she only was her super-smart geeky best friend. But once she got to know Rachel, she never envied her again. Rachel was your typical bitch, wearing dresses, heels and tons of make-up, besides despising everyone and only thinking about appearances. They never got along, besides the fact they both liked Percy, they were very different. But in the end, Percy saw Rachel really self, and stopped having a crush on her, so he and Annabeth started dating some months after that.
'But if he really didn't have a crush on her anymore, why did he cheat on me with her?' Annabeth thought, trying not to cry. He told her he loved her, so why did he go with her? She used to believe Percy was the most loyal person in the world, but that was a proof he was like every other boy. He wasn't as special as she believed. She should've know better, that he only was saying sweet things to make her fall for him, maybe even to get her in his pants. But she knew he was a virgin in that time. Or that was what he told her, maybe he lied about it too.
Maybe everything Percy told her was a lie. Maybe he wasn't from New York, his father never died; he never got expelled of any school, never hit a girl with a burrito for accident, never loved swimming, never understood her, and never loved her.
She felt how her legs started to burn. She has always been athletic, but she never walked so long with heels. Her heart beat a lot faster, since she believed she was going to find out the truth anytime, for worse or for better.
She pushed some tears back. She needed to accept the fact Percy was part of her past. A sad, beautiful part of her past.
She needed to move on, to get going, to forget everything. Even if she saw Percy everyday, on magazines, TV, photos, and in person, she had to forget him, or at least try. She had to accept that the boy, who once was a part of her, her other half, wasn't who she believed.
Lost in her thoughts, she didn't notice when the wind throw her hood out of her head, letting her curls fly. She saw Luke's head meters away from her, and she started to walk faster, but a group of numerous girls and boys saw her, and started to scream and approach her, trying to take pictures with her and autographs. They crowed around her and didn't let her go. She smiled, and tried to excuse herself, but more people got there.
The people around her went wild, and in matter of seconds, Luke's head got out of her sight.
…
Piper stormed out of Jason's white car. Silena told her some 'tips' for their 'date' before the left, and she got highly offended. Silena told her to:
-Bate her eyelashes and try to show off her cool eyes.
-Smile and giggle.
-Try to show more her legs, since she was wearing a pair of wormed out cool shorts.
-Kiss him.
But Piper didn't want to do anything of that. It was just so girly, and partly bitchy. She didn't like to giggle, and less show her legs or kiss someone in the first date, even if a lot of paparazzi were there, thanks to Silena and Beckendorf. Silena was her friend, but she sometimes questioned about her ways to get a boy.
Piper heard Jason's steps approach her, with the basket on his hand. He touched her shoulder, sending electric trough her body.
"Hey, I don't know why you're mad, but if you're going to be my girlfriend, you should at least act like if you're interested in me," Jason whispered, like if he was afraid someone of the press would hear him.
Piper nodded, and took several deep breaths to calm her down. She didn't need to do what Silena told her. She knew how to look sexy.
They walked and sat under a big tree, away of all the people. The sun shone all over the place, the birds sang in the trees and kids were running and screaming. The flowers adorned the place. Jason put a green blanket on the floor and sat on it, smiling at Piper who took seat next to him and opened the basket. She put her hands behind and looked at the sky. It was a nice day, and it seemed that nobody was going to bother them.
Maybe Silena and Beckendorf did something to let the people away.
"So, um,…" Jason tried to start a conversation, but he didn't know what to talk about. The sun made his hair shine even more, it looked as gold.
Piper put a lock of her hair behind her ear and looked at Jason expectantly, but it was obvious he wasn't going to bring anything up. "So, where are you from?" She said, a dumb question, but it was better than nothing. So romantic.
"Well, I was born here, but I moved to Berkeley some years and then return here. What about you?" he said.
"I'm from Oklahoma, but I was raised in California, by my dad-" she said, but Jason cut her off.
"Tristan McLean, right?" Jason asked. "Thalia told me some things about you," Piper felt how her cheeks heated up and she bet she was bright red. What did Thalia tell him?
"Yeah," Piper nodded slowly. "That's him."
"She also told me you're Cherokee, right?" Jason asked. He seemed relaxed, but she still could sense his nerves.
She tensed. "Yeah, any problem with that?" She hated it. She hated when someone looked at her like if being descendent of natives made her less than they were. It was worse when she wasn't famous, bullies always mocked her for it, but she wasn't afraid of showing her true blood. Even now, some people looked at her that way, and she initiated a campaign to defend the natives.
"Of course not! I didn't mean to get you offended," Jason apologized. His eyes were sincere, but she still was a little offended. Jason cleared his throat, obviously awkward.
"Do you want to eat something?" He searched in the basket and took out two cokes and two sandwiches. He handed one to hear with a dish, and then he started to eat his own. Piper checked the sandwich, but it was a chicken one. When she didn't eat it, Jason frowned.
"Is something wrong?" he asked.
"I'm vegetarian," Piper announced, placing the sandwich back in the basket and searching for something else. She relaxed when she found a Greek salad. She took it out and started to eat, smiling happily. At least, Silena remembered it.
"Oh, I didn't know that," Jason said, watching her carefully. Piper saw a flash behind him, indicating paparazzi already found them. Goodbye peace.
"Yeah," Piper said, taking a bite of her food. She guessed they weren't doing a great job at being romantic, because paparazzi looked a little bored. It was weird they didn't take more photos every second. "Anyway, I heard you and the guys are working on a new CD, right?" Piper moved closer to him, and Jason chuckled.
"Oh, right." He smirked. Piper couldn't help but notice how his scar curved and how beautiful his smile was. "We have some songs ready, but we keep working. It's amazing, y'know? I guess it's the only time Percy, Nico and Leo do something," he laughed, not noticing Piper's disturbed face at the mention of Leo.
"Leo," Piper murmured, but sadly, Jason heard her.
"Yeah, what's up with him?" he asked.
Piper hesitated. She had a complicated story with Leo, and she didn't know if trusting Jason that information would be good. She never told her friends, so why would she tell him? Besides, he could just go and tell Leo everything. But as she looked at him, she knew she could trust him. His eyes were sincere, and he was Thalia's brother, and as she heard, he was a gentleman, a goody-goody boy that never went against the rules. Leo trusted him; he was his best friend, so why wouldn't she trust him too? Annabeth would tell her she was insane, but she didn't know what to do. Maybe if she told Jason, she would have a better chance to speak with Leo and maybe befriend him again.
"Well…" she started. "I know Leo since we were ten years old." Jason frowned, maybe trying to figure out how it would turn. "We became friends, like, inseparable super best friends. You should know his mother died and his father is missing, and how he went to a lot of orphans," she stopped, and Jason nodded. "Well, when we were 13, my father invited him to come and live with us. He denied at first, but after some months he came, and he stayed almost a year, and we were both happy and all, but one day, my father dragged us to a fancy party full of celebrities, and I don't know why, but Leo ran away from us that night." Flashes of the moment came back into Piper's mind, but she tried not to think about it. She didn't want to cry right there.
"I never saw him after that. I worried for years. Then, all of sudden, I learned he was in a band and he got really famous and rich. I swear I never saw that coming, but I couldn't help but feel happy for him," Piper lowered her gaze to the blanket. Little ants climbed and tried to make their way to the food.
"Whoa…" Jason said, totally shocked. "Leo never told me that… I mean, I knew he always ran away, but he never told me about you…"
Piper sighed. She wasn't surprised by it. "I know, he hates me."
"But you gave him home, why would he hate you?" Piper shook her head. Jason understood that if he pushed her, she would start crying. And for some weird reason, he wanted to make her feel better. He felt as it was his obligation.
"Well, what if we do some show for the cameras?" he smiled, hoping it would make her smile. It did, indeed, she laughed. And he realized her laugh was so beautiful.
"Right," Piper said, moving even closer. "Let's eat the dessert," she took out a piece of chocolate cake and only one spoon. Jason rolled his eyes at their manager's stupidity. Piper started to eat it herself, and Jason protested, and they both laughed.
After what seemed two hours, Jason counted around 40 paparazzi watching them. Piper laughed, joked and made terrible attempts to be flirty, and it was clearly she didn't do it very often. The tension that was between them disappeared, and Jason found himself enjoying the moment.
He wouldn't mind dating her.
