AN: So, I literally woke up one morning with this idea in my mind...What if the Emperor had been a bit more cautious about recognizing XYZ as his daughter? What if XYZ had been more thoughtful of a person? Alas life got in the way a bit and it's taken me a couple of months to actually find the words to capture it. Quite a bit AU but an interesting premise that maybe I'll turn into a full story one day…we'll see. Apologies for not going into too much detail and just describing the plot in general. I might end up expanding it sometime in the future. For now, hope you enjoy!

XiaoYanZi had always considered herself to be rather fearless. Fear had no place in her life. To admit fear was to admit weakness. And to show weakness meant drawing the attentions of the bad Masters and the criminals and crooks in the world. Besides, she had neither the time nor the energy to be afraid. Life needed to be survived. The children and elders of DaZaYuan needed her strength. Liu Qing and Liu Hong needed her help in making ends meet. So, when she met ZiWei and JinSuo, her initial instinct was to protect them. ZiWei was her antithesis in so many ways and yet, somehow, ZiWei became her sworn sister. As the two girls spent more time together, XYZ saw that what ZW lacked in physical strength, she made up for in strength of character and intelligence. And it left her in awe sometimes, that someone so learned and so wise would trust her, XYZ, with such a large secret. It humbled her and made her understand, for the first time, the bonds of family, stronger and deeper than that of any friendship.
So it was that as she drifted in the twilight between sleeping and waking, submerged in the pain from the arrow that mistook her for a deer, it was ZiWei's voice she heard. She heard ZiWei's ever-so-eloquently phrased vow as the two girls underwent the sacred ritual to become sworn sisters. She heard the deep pain and sorrow in ZiWei's voice as she described her mother's story. She heard ZiWei's pleas to find her father as they clung to the rocky cliff. As someone in the waking world held XYZ's hand in her feverish state, she felt ZiWei's fingers, grasping XYZ's with such trust, and saw ZW's eyes, shining with such hope. So it was ZiWei's name that passed her lips as the TaiYi's (Royal Physicians) and servants bustled around her, desperately trying to save her life. As day passed into night, XYZ never stopped repeating in a feverish whisper, "ZiWei, MeiMei (Younger Sister), I promise. I promise."
For LingFei, who had taken to keeping watch over the mysterious young woman the Emperor's hunting party had brought back, XYZ's mutterings stirred something within her heart. With two young daughters of her own, LingFei hated to see a child suffer so. She was also deeply touched by the dedication the wounded girl showed to her sister, some girl named for the ZiWei flowers that bloomed so beautifully in the Imperial Gardens. Since arriving in the Palace and chosen as a concubine, Ling Fei had left her own family. Even with the countless servants awaiting to fulfill her wishes, no matter how minor, Ling Fei missed the days spent chatting and sewing with her elder sister. Despite the age gap between them, the Wei sisters (AN: based on history, or at least Wikipedia, Ling Fei was from the Wei family from Jiangsu. Her sister, Er Kang and Er Tai's mother, is likely fictional) had always drawn strength from one another, particularly in the face of their father's ambitions in elevating the family name. As a Han by birth, Ling Fei knew her position at court was precarious, even with the significance of her title as a GuiFei (Imperial Noble Consort). Her kind heart and mild manners further places her in peril. As her sister said, it was a good thing LingFei had a logical mind to ensure her survival in the Imperial Harem. Fortunately, Ling Fei's elder sister married into the favored Fu family and could still visit the Palace to keep Ling Fei company. Thus, though the sisters now lived separate lives, their bond remained just as strong as in the days of their childhood. XYZ's mutterings thus made LingFei feel like she had found a kindred spirit. Certainly, she was curious as to the meaning behind the meaning of words and the background of the girl, especially given the Emperor's strong reaction to the name Xia Yu He. But for now, as she held the hand of the unconscious girl lying in such pain, Ling Fei just wanted the girl to survive so that she could fulfill whatever promise it was that was made to ZiWei.
In his study, HuangShang paced endlessly as he fought to master the emotions brought about by YuHe's name. The items the girl from the hunting grounds had with her brought back the happiness of his youth and the then naïve promise he made to go back for YuHe. He could not question the possibility that the girl was his daughter. He had compromised YuHe, had claimed her for his own. Perhaps out of selfishness. She was so pure, so full of grace and intelligence. She did not seek his attention like the many women in his life but seemed to be wary of his intentions, at least at first. On some level, he did care for her. She was beautiful, certainly, but her beauty seemed to transcend her physical being and reach into her very soul. He wanted to possess her, to bring her back to be kept as a bright beacon of gentleness and goodness. In retrospect, he had perhaps put her on a pedestal, made demands of her knowing she could not refuse her Emperor. He had hoped, in the rare moments when he could spare a thought, that she would have moved on, had found a worthy man to help protect her goodness, none the worse for their brief romance. But the existence of the girl from the hunting grounds shattered these illusions. What trials YuHe must have suffered, as an unwed mother, unable to share the Royal heritage of her daughter. The very idea of YuHe's light being squashed made HuangShang feel guilty. He was man, yes, used to having his way, but he was human as well. So he paced, caught between regret and guilt.
FuLun's entrance into the study was a welcome relief. FuLun was dedicated to the Qing dynasty but, more importantly for this situation, FuLun was level-headed, logical, and discrete. Waving aside FuLun's greetings, the Emperor asked impatiently, "Well, has anything been found out about her? Has she woken up yet?"
When FuLun replied to the negative, HuangShang took a seat behind his work table, "Well, this is a fine kettle of fish. Zhen suppose zhen will have to consult JiShiFu regarding finding a name for the newest GeGe."
FuLun looked startled and bowed before asking, "Is HuangShang saying...?"
HuangShang sighed, "Yes. There is a strong chance that the girl is Zhen's daughter. Zhen met XiaYuHe during a trip South when Zhen took shelter with her family during an unexpected rainstorm. The items the girl had with her were Zhen's gifts to YuHe. Zhen intended to go back for her, but upon returning to BeiJing, too many things intervened and too much time passed for Zhen to consider fulfilling that promise."
FuLun looked thoughtful before saying softly, "HuangShang, recognizing a new GeGe is not a minor undertaking, particularly with LFY away on her trip. While cheng admires HS's character in doing right by the young woman, mightn't we be a bit more cautious? Just in case there is some hidden motive or story? Should not the truth be uncovered first?"
HS looked troubled, "Hmm…Zhen would hate to think that someone would abuse YuHe's memory like this…But perhaps you're right, perhaps this should not be rushed…Zhen will think on this some more and hopefully have a chance to question the young lady in question…"
A day later, when HS learned of XYZ's mutterings from LingFei, he was thankful for FuLun's input.
00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000000000000000
XYZ's awakening was as unexpected and dramatic as the events that led to her unconscious state. With a loud cry of ZiWei's name, XYZ sat straight up in bed only to clasp her wound in pain. Wincing in discomfort, she blinked the weariness from her eyes as she glanced around the opulence of her surroundings. Finally catching her breath, her curious gaze met the startled but kind eyes of LingFei. For a moment, the girl and the Concubine only stared at each other. Then, with her characteristic brashness, XYZ broke the silence with the simple question of, "Where am I?"
Upon hearing that she was in the Forbidden Palace, XYZ's eyes widened even more before she grasped wildly at the sheets surrounding her, searching for the items that ZiWei had entrusted to her. LingFei, fearful that the girl would make her wound even worse, quickly protested and grasped XYZ's hands to keep her still. To the concubine's surprise, XYZ quickly burst into tears and started reprimanding herself in harsh tones for losing ZiWei's precious items and for betraying ZW's trust. Surprised by this abrupt turn of events, LingFei sat on the bed next to XYZ and drew the poor girl into her arms just as she would to comfort her own daughters. Waiting until XYZ quieted, LingFei ensured her that the items were safe in the Emperor's keeping.
Feeling the tension ebb out of the girl, LingFei asked gently, "Well, my dear. XYZ, is it? Why don't you tell me about your adventure?"
Ashamed at her show of weakness, XYZ pulled out of LingFei's arms, took a deep breath, and embarked on the tale of her meeting with ZW and all the subsequent events that led her to the hunting fields. Exhausted from both the arrow wound and from the telling, XYZ quickly fell back asleep as LingFei sat thoughtfully. Seeing that the young girl had slipped back into dream-land, LingFei arose, called softly for the servants, and started on her way to seek an audience with the Emperor.
The Emperor was astounded at XYZ's story and wanted to find ZiWei at once, but FuLun's advice to proceed with caution resounded in his mind. Calling for FuLun, he imparted the strange tale and tasked the official with both finding this ZiWei in BeiJing and sending trusted men to JiNan to find out more about XiaYuHe's life after HS had left her. FuLun nodded and requested that his elder son, ErKang, be given the responsibilities of finding the mysterious ZiWei while FuLun visited JiNan discretely. HuangShang voiced his agreement with the additional suggestion that if this ZiWei corroborated XYZ's story, then she should be brought to XuesShiFu for protection. These important matters decided, HuangShang asked LingFei to help XYZ recover, saying he did not wish to speak with the girl until she was physically well again.
The next few weeks passed quickly, ZiWei was quickly found and taken to XueShiFu, where ErKang quickly found himself intrigued by her grace, intelligence, and many talents. On the surface, she seemed to resemble many of the courtly ladies, but he sensed a strength and a goodness in her that he wanted to protect. Knowing the complications of her situation, however, he tried valiantly to guard his own heart. Nonetheless, as the days passed and he got to know her even better, he could not help but fall for her even more.
Meanwhile, in the Palace, XYZ quickly recovered and regained her spirit. The Emperor summoned her for an audience during which she intrigued him with her open mannerisms and unconventional points of view. She startled him when she expressed her disappointment at having to stay in the Palace instead of flying free as was her wont and made him laugh when he observed her playing in the Royal Gardens with the younger Ah Ge's and Ge Ge's. Knowing that the Royal children were often used as pawns for their mothers' personal advancements, the Emperor was pleasantly shocked at how quickly XYZ was able to bring them together. Hearing the happy voices of the children as he walked throughout the Imperial Gardens warmed the Emperor's heart.
It was during one of these playtimes that Wu Ah Ge and Er Tai met XYZ. Running around with a blindfold on her face as she played tag with the children, XYZ accidentally ran into Yongqi. Only his quick reflexes and excellent balance honed after years of martial training prevented both of them from being tipped over into the nearby pond. Ever the gentleman, he quickly started apologizing when his breath caught at the sight of her sparkling eyes. XYZ removed her blindfold fully with a laugh as the children surrounded her to ask if their 'XYZ jie jie (older sister)' was alright and some of the bolder ones thanked WAG for rescuing their playmate. As she quickly assured the children of her safety, ErTai exclaimed, "Oh! You're the girl from the hunt!" Turning to Yongqi, he said, "WAG, this is the 'deer' you shot!"
XYZ looked at Yongqi in surprise. Finally snapping out of his stupor, Yongqi nodded and quickly apologized for hurting her after introducing himself and ErTai. XYZ merely smiled at him and quipped mysteriously that she should be thanking him before running off with the children to resume their play.
As Yongqi and ErTai continued on their walk, ErTai quickly told WAG all he knew about XYZ's situation and ZiWei's stay at XueShiFu. Yongqi was intrigued at the prospect of a new sister but somehow found his thoughts turning more to a pair of bright sparkling eyes.
The second time Yongqi met XYZ, she was sitting in a tree, quite alone in the Imperial Gardens. In fact, he probably would not have noticed her but for a peach core that seemed to fall mysteriously from the sky. Looking up at her, he was surprised to see a wistful look on her face as she glanced out over the rooftops of the Palace. Curious, he called up to her and was further surprised when she called for him to join her. Smiling, he sprang up and remarked that she really was named aptly. XYZ just laughed in reply, dusted off her clothing, and offered him the last remaining peach in her hands. Taking the peach in hand, he asked her for her reason for being so high up on the tree. XYZ tilted her head and asked him if he knew her story. When he nodded, she stated, "Then you should know that I don't belong here. ZiWei's the one who does. I'm just a regular girl who's not meant for a life of luxury. I know I'll have to leave soon, and in a way I'm glad. Since I do miss Liu Qing and Liu Hong and everyone at Da Za Yuan. But I'm a little sad too. Once ZiWei is returned to her rightful place, I won't be able to see her very much. She is my sworn sister, but we'll be separated. I'm happy for her, I am, but still... I will also miss LingFei, who has been so kind to me. I don't remember my mother, you know, and she's been like a mother to me even before I was awake. I'll miss all the Ah Ge's and GeGe's and their laughter. I'll even miss the Emperor, who for all his stern expressions, really just needs someone to make him laugh." She shrugged, "I'm usually not this melancholy or this emotional." She turned towards him, "But somehow, I find you easy to talk to, for all that this is our second meeting….perhaps because you are the reason I've been able to enjoy these past few weeks…Well, you and your arrow."
Yongqi was glad to see the smile return to her face and couldn't help but commiserate with her, "I know what you mean. My own mother has passed away too, only a few years ago. Though I was at an age where I shouldn't have needed her guidance, it was still lonely, particularly when I see the other Ah Ge's and GeGe's with their mothers. LingFei has taken me in too, perhaps because I'm best friends with her nephew, ErTai. She recognizes that I'm an adult but still lets me know that she's there for me. For that I am thankful."
XYZ nodded, "She reminds me a lot of ZiWei actually. They're both so sweet and kind, genuinely kind, not the fake kind where people pretend to like you because they want something from you. They, neither of them, have a deceptive bone in their bodies. I always feel so protective of ZiWei… I'm glad she has a brother like you."
Startled, Yongqi replied, "But you barely even know me!"
XYZ shrugged, "Perhaps not. But I've certainly heard enough about you from the children. Do you know how much the little Ah Ge's look up to you? For how smart and gifted you are? They've sung your praises to me, ever since you kept me from becoming like a fish in the pond."
Yongqi ducked his head in embarrassment, "I suppose I never thought about the effects of my actions on my younger siblings."
XYZ scoffed, "See, that's your problem! Everyone in this Palace! You're a family and yet no family behaves as you do. The children, for all that they can sleep on full bellies, are probably worse off than the children at Da Za Yuan! At least at Da Za Yuan the children can play with each other and become friends."
Yongqi shook his head, "You are a most singular person with some fascinating ideas."
XYZ shrugged again, "See…all the more reason I don't belong here!"
Though Yongqi nodded in agreement, he could not help but feel his heart clench at the thought of her leaving.

Soon enough, FuLun returned with evidence of the truth of ZiWei's story. The Emperor was ecstatic and immediately summoned ZiWei to the Palace. During their meeting, he was truly impressed by her grace, her talents, and her gentleness. In her, he not only saw all the things he had loved about YuHe, but also a deeper strength and bravery at having survived a lonesome road to BeiJing. Such was his joy, he immediately gave her Shu Fang Zhai to live in and gave LingFei leave to educate ZiWei in all the courtly manners.
The reunion between XYZ and ZiWei was one of fondness and friendship as XYZ excitedly took ZiWei on a tour of the Imperial Gardens. During this tour, they met Yongqi, who was walking with ErKang and ErTai. Yongqi was likewise excited to meet his new sister, but found his attention distracted by the glow of sheer joy emanating from XYZ.
Summoning tea to be set in one of the nearby padogas, Yongqi began to learn more about ZiWei. Since his conversation with XYZ, he had become much more careful in learning more about his siblings. He was much impressed regarding her knowledge of literature and history. Likewise, ZiWei was overjoyed to have such a caring older brother. Ever perceptive, she also noted the glances he would send XYZ and smiled gently at the realization that perhaps her sworn sister might not have to give up a life of luxury after all. For his part, Er Kang felt like he was seeing ZiWei anew…the Emperor's acceptance of her status and the end of her uncertainties had removed the cloud of worry that always seemed to shroud her smiles. Now, in XYZ's company, it was like she finally blossomed as finely as the flowers whose name she bore. The two girls teased each other but complemented each other and brought out the best in each other. Truly, blood sisters could not be as fortunate.
As the young people laughed and built on their camaraderie, they were interrupted by the sudden arrival of the Emperor, LingFei, and FuLun. Quickly standing up to pay their respects, the youngsters shifted around the table so as to give the elders room. With a booming laugh, the Emperor accepted a cup of tea from ZiWei and remarked at how happy he was at reclaiming such a wonderful daughter. As ZiWei blushed, XYZ smiled brightly and said, "I did say she was everything a lady should be, didn't I?"
The Emperor nodded, "Why yes, XYZ, you did. And Zhen must thank you for bringing her back to zhen's side."
XYZ nodded, "Does that mean I can go home now?"
The Emperor sighed, "Yes, that was your requested reward, was it not? However, Zhen has found that zhen has come to enjoy your company in these last few weeks and am loathe to part from it. You have become almost like a daughter to Zhen, and it seems unfair for zhen to gain a daughter only to lose another…But Zhen also did promise to set you free, little bird."
XYZ sighed, "HuangShang, as much as I have enjoyed my time you and as grateful as I am for you and LingFei, I really do not belong here…As much as I hate to be parted from ZiWei now that we have finally been reunited, I am not of Royal blood."
Seeing the troubled look on HuangShang's face, ErKang spoke up with an audacious suggestion, "HS, forgive cheng's forwardness, but perhaps there is a possible solution. ErNiang has always spoken about wanting a daughter to spoil, so perhaps it is possible for our family to adopt XYZ Gu Niang?"
Looking at his son in surprise but seeing the hopeful look on the Emperor's face, FuLun quickly agreed, "Yes HuangShang. Certainly as ZiWei GeGe's sworn sister, we cannot just allow XYZ Gu Niang to return to her previous life. As cheng's adopted daughter, she can still come visit ZiWei GeGe with Fu Jin. Cheng is certain that Fu Jin would love to have a daughter to spoil."
LingFei likewise smiled at the surprising idea, "Yes. XYZ is right in that she is not quite right for Palace life. But this way, she can retain her freedom while still maintain her sisterly ties. Besides, all the Royal children have grown rather fond of their XYZ-jie jie and it would be a shame to keep her away from them."
Even Yongqi spoke up for the idea, "Huang Ah Ma, Er Cheng thinks Er Kang has a wonderful idea. If Fu Jin and Fu Da Ren are willing, this might be the best option for all of us."
HuangShang laughed at the willingness of everyone to back ErKang's spontaneous idea, "Well then, XYZ, it seems you have managed to escape this Palace but you will still end up a lady."
Seeing the doubt on XYZ's face, ZiWei quickly clasped XYZ's hands in her own, "Oh XYZ, do say you'll agree. I cannot bear the thought of never seeing you again. Just think, you've always wanted a family, and now you're not only going to gain two new brothers but also parents!"
It was ZiWei's happiness that finally brought XYZ around, "Well, I suppose Fu Da Ren, as long as you don't mind having a troublemaker like me as a daughter, then I will feel honored to become a member of your family."
HS laughed again, "Wonderful! FuLun, I leave the matter in your capable hands."
And so it was that the matter was settled most satisfactorily.
Of course, the process of incorporating ZiWei into the Royal Family and XYZ into the Fu family was much more complicated in practice. HS's letter to his mother regarding ZiWei's new status was met with alarm and LFY quickly returned to the Palace with Qing-er. Fortunately, HS could provide the evidence for ZiWei's Royal heritage and LFY consented to withholding judgment until she had met ZiWei in person. Sending Qing-er to find out more about this new GeGe, LFY was surprised to hear that the girl was universally liked by not just most of the other concubines but also the other Royal children. Qing-er herself seemed most eager finally to meet a girl her own age in the Palace. Qing-er's cautious curiosity more than anything caused LFY to finally request a meeting with the newest GeGe. To her pleasure, she found ZiWei just as intelligent, respectful, and soft-spoken as her reputation. Indeed, ZiWei had the same sweetness that LFY loved best in Qing-er. Thus, as time passed and the friendship between the two girls grew, LFY found herself thawing towards this new grand-daughter. Soon enough, she allowed for the formal ceremony that would make ZiWei an official princess and it became not a rare sight for LFY to be accompanied by the two girls as they wandered in the Palace gardens.
XYZ's transformation into a lady was definitely not as smooth. While Fu Jin truly did enjoy having a daughter, she often found XYZ's spirit a little too overwhelming. Fortunately, ErKang and ErTai quickly learned to include XYZ in their martial arts practice and found her to be a willing if frustrating pupil. With the connections and wealth of her new family, XYZ was able to help Liu Qing and Liu Hong start the restaurant/hotel that they had always wanted. FuLun also found the business venture helpful in keeping tabs of the gossip around the city and knew he had discrete and loyal allies in both Liu Qing and Liu Hong. XYZ's book learning proved even more of a mess and took the dedication and patience of both ZiWei and Qing-er to even begin to help her learn. Surprisingly, it was Yongqi who came up with a helpful suggestion. He observed that XYZ's mind was too quick and active for strict memorizations. She lived too much in the now to care for facts and poetry so unrelated to her life. If only there was a way for her to tie the knowledge to something she enjoyed, perhaps she would be more willing to learn.
Grateful to Yongqi for this breakthrough, XYZ thought hard about a way to make the theory a reality. She discovered a way quite by accident one day when the Emperor happened to pay a visit to Shu Fang Zhai when XYZ was visiting ZW. As the girls delighted the Emperor with the fun mishaps of XYZ's education, ZiWei also performed a new song that she had composed. Smiling in enjoyment, the Emperor turned to XYZ and requested a song from her as well. Laughing cheerfully, XYZ obeyed with a folk song with silly riddles that soon had both the Emperor and ZiWei in stitches. When ZiWei remarked that it was amazing how well XYZ could remember all the riddles via song, XYZ reached an epiphany. And the very next day, the group of youngsters decided to work together to make different songs to help XYZ learn. Surprisingly, this new technique became wildly popular among the younger Ah Ge's and GeGe's and the youngster found their songs in high demand.
These songs also drew the attention of LFY, who, though initially taken aback by the energetic XYZ, admitted that the girl certainly added a little more spice to life. Unfortunately, she retained reservations regarding XYZ's inclusion into such a prestigious family, particularly one so closely tied to the Royal Family (via Ling-Fei). She insisted that for the sake of XYZ's future marriage prospects, that the Fu's investigate fully into the girl's past to find out about her origins. Though reluctant at first, the Emperor capitulated to his mother's demands and commanded FuLun to clarify XYZ's mysterious past. The search was not an easy one, but one day ErKang managed to find the monastery where XYZ had been abandoned and was able to gain admittance to the old abbess. She in turn was astounded that he knew XYZ but insisted on seeing the girl before releasing any new information. So, after much persuading on ZiWei's and Qing-er's part and Yongqi's solemn promise to protect the girls, LFY and the Emperor granted them special permission to accompany XYZ on her visit. As a visibly nervous XYZ clung to ZiWei and Qing-er's hands and greeted the aging abbess, the youngsters were all amazed at the sudden tears flowing from the old lady's eyes. From a hidden compartment in her table, she drew out an aged looking envelope and handed it silently to a shocked XYZ. Her own hands shaking too much, XYZ handed the letter to ZiWei to unfold and read aloud. The contents of the letter, written by XYZ's birth mother, shocked all assembled. The hidden plot to undermine the Fang family and the desperation that drove XYZ's mother to separate her children made everyone apprehensive about possible dangers that might still exist for XYZ. While the youngsters were glad to hear that XYZ came from an affluent background of enough importance to appease LFY, they were troubled by the deeper string of government corruption that the letter hinted at. The old abbess could not shed more light on the tale, saying only that she owed a great debt to Fang family for saving her from a most abusive marriage and wishing the Little Mistress (as she called XYZ) luck. She seemed much relieved that the Fu family was willing to take XYZ in as one of their own. ErKang asked XYZ's permission to share the letter with FuLun and possibly the Emperor, saying that they must clarify the dangers. XYZ nodded distractedly as ZiWei and Qing-er tried to comfort her. Bidding a grateful adieu to the old abbess, the youngsters quickly returned to the Fu family home.
After making certain that XYZ was alright, the three young men went to discuss the matter fully with FuLun. Meanwhile, XYZ finally broke her silence to marvel at another piece of news from the letter...the existence of an older brother. As the shock of the morning wore off, an excited gleam entered her eyes as she turned to the other two girls. As kind as ErKang and ErTai had been to her, she was overjoyed to have blood family left in the world and was determined to re-visit the old abbess to find out more regarding this brother.
FuLun was much troubled regarding the corruption hinted at in the letter and quickly made the matter known to the Emperor. After much investigation, a network of corrupted officials spread over the entire nation was discovered. Greatly angered at the finding, the Emperor ordered harsh repercussions and demanded that the annual exams be monitored even more strictly to avoid bribery and cheating. He also cleared the Fang family's name and made efforts to find XYZ's blood brother and summon him BeiJing.
The Emperor's dedication to uprooting the corruption was felt across the country and received much praise from the common people. So, it was a greatly conflicted and confused XiaoJian who read the public announcement regarding the pardoning of his family as he entered the gates around BeiJing. Making his way to the old abbess, he was further startled to be re-directed to the Fu family where he was received with much joy. Of course, before allowing him to actually meet XYZ, ErKang and ErTai made certain that XiaoJian knew that XYZ was under their protection. They already viewed XYZ as a true sister and would do their part in protecting her. XiaoJian was gratified that his sister had such loyal friends but was mystified about all the events, particularly since he had been brought up to think that the Emperor was the Fang family's enemy. Only reading the letter from his own mother helped him believe. Feeling as though a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders, XiaoJian was able to meet XYZ with a relieved smile. Brother and sister were overjoyed to be reunited and, under the watchful eyes of the Fu brothers, quickly cemented a deep friendship. Despite the rocky start to their interactions, the Fu brothers were also soon impressed by XiaoJian's intelligence and many talents.
The glowing report he received regarding XiaoJian truly impressed the Emperor and it was not long before XiaoJian became as dependable a cheng-zi as Er Kang. The elevation of XiaoJian's status also meant that XYZ could forgo adoption by the Fu's but still retain a high status. She made certain to keep in touch with the Fu's, however, and was comfortable enough to call them her Aunt and Uncle. LFY was much surprised at the turn of events and grew quite curious regarding the high praises she heard from both courtly gossip and the Emperor himself regarding the new court official. During the Lantern Festival celebration that year, she made certain to observe the Fang siblings carefully and was much gratified to see a calming of XYZ's temperament by the solid presence of her brother. Certainly the girl still laughed too much and perhaps a bit more loudly than was proper, but the care she took to help all the younger Ah Ge's and Ge Ge's with their own lantern boats truly impressed LFY. That ZiWei and XYZ's jointly made boat was in the shape of a swallow bird crowned by a wreath of ziwei flowers was of no surprise to anyone present, but that WUG should also have drawn a small swallow and ErKang to have drawn a small ziwei flower on their respective boats were noticed with raised eyebrows from many. The Emperor, laughing as he was surrounded by such a joyful family, did not notice the blushes on the faces of the girls in response to the surreptitious glances from their respective admirers nor the sly but knowing glances Qing-er and XiaoJian sent each other at the romance developing between their friends. But LFY and LingFei both certainly noticed and each made a silent note to bring the matter up to the Emperor.
For her part, LFY also spoke with Qing-er, for the dowager empress was still set on matching her favorite with the eldest Fu son. To her surprise, Qing-er had blushingly declined and was most insistent on not disrupting the genuine love ErKang and ZiWei held for each other. Something in her tone made LFY raise an eyebrow as she remembered the sword and flute design that adorned Qing-er's most recent handkerchief embroidery. Seeing that LFY was aware of her secret, Qing-er could only admit shyly that while she had cared for ErKang at one time, she was good enough friends with ZiWei to see that her future lay elsewhere. Though her meetings with XiaoJian were few, she found that her initial curiosity for XYZ's mysterious brother had grown first into friendship and now, perhaps, into something deeper. LFY, while certainly surprised at the emotions the usually calm and collected Qing-er was showing, nonetheless wanted the girl to be happy. While certainly XiaoJian was from a good family, it was not of the same elevation as the Fu's. But luckily XiaoJian had the Emperor's favor and the added benefit of being a good friend of Yongqi, who had a good chance of becoming the heir. So LFY was satisfied that Qing-er would be mostly happily settled should a match be made.
The Emperor found himself ill-prepared for the joint notifications from both his mother and Ling-Fei regarding his favorite youngsters. Though he saw the sense in the match and was well-assured of the happiness of such a marriage, the proposed union between ZiWei and ErKang was met with not a little sadness, as the Emperor was still unwilling to part from his newly reclaimed daughter. That Qing-er and XiaoJian should have found solace and joy in one another gladdened his heart for both youngsters had suffered quite tragic childhoods. But the growing affection between XYZ and Yongqi startled him the most. The Emperor had long had his eye on Yongqi as a potential heir and had thought deeply about the type of woman that would best compliment WAG to ensure his success as the next ruler. For all the Emperor loved XYZ as a daughter, even he could see that even with all her recent improvements, she was not quite the type to sit back and be happy with a political marriage. A bit troubled, the Emperor determined that the best course of action, prior to making any proclamations, was to find out the thoughts of the three young men in question.
Over the course of the next week, the Emperor summoned Er Kang, XiaoJian, and Yongqi individually to his study. Each young man was of course greatly embarrassed at the straight-forward manners with which the Emperor addressed the prospects of their future marital happiness. ErKang and Yongqi, having been brought up with the full knowledge that marriage for young men of their status was a thing of politics and practicality, were astounded that the Emperor should be so considerate of their emotional happiness. In retrospect, however, perhaps such an approach should not have been so surprising, since the young ladies in question were favorites of the Emperor.
Perhaps because he was the oldest and the most certain regarding his wishes, Er Kang was the calmest during his interview with the Emperor. Besides, he had known since he was of marriageable age that the Emperor intended him to be a potential son-in-law. That he should hold tender feelings for a GeGe was a fortunate coincidence. Likewise, the Emperor found that his conversation with Er Kang was the most straight-forward one of the week and his approval for the match was easily given.
Like Er Kang, XiaoJian found that his age and maturity helped him hide his discomfort in speaking on such a personal topic. That the Emperor should take personal time to find out about his wishes and feelings for Qing-er surprised him but also increased his estimation of this particular Emperor's worth. Such an act only helped eliminate any remaining doubts he might have had in accepting the Emperor as a friend rather than a foe. XiaoJian's status, however, was more precarious than that of Er Kang's. And though Qing-er was not a daughter of the Emperor, she was his niece and the favorite of LFY, a combination that necessitated careful consideration when choosing a groom. XiaoJian, for all the favors he received and all the past monetary wealth of his family, was only the first major court official from the Fang family. Not only that, but he remained a Han by birth whereas Qing-er was Manchu through and through. So it was that the second half of his audience with the Emperor also included LFY. In a most business-like manner, it was decided that his status would be elevated and a new title and residence given to him as befitting Qing-er's status. The Emperor was quick to reassure XiaoJian that such a move did not discount his own talents but that for appearances sake, he had to accept such honors. LFY had seemed genuinely puzzled as to XiaoJian's initial reluctance to accept these honors but upon discussion with the Emperor after the young man had departed realized that XiaoJian's belief in merit above special favors was what truly made him unique. When she spoke on the matter further with Qing-er that evening, despite the girl's embarrassment, she also speculated that XiaoJian's sense of honor was possibly one of the attributes Qing-er most admired.
Despite the warnings from both Er Kang and XiaoJian, when Yongqi entered his father's office, he was little prepared for the depth of the discussion. The Emperor's own disquiet regarding their talk created a tense atmosphere. After some brief comments on some recent reports Yongqi had prepared regarding a domestic issue, the Emperor fell silent for so long that Yongqi felt quite choked by the stillness. When the Emperor did speak again, however, Yongqi's bewilderment only grew. For the Emperor spoke of sacrifice, the call of duty, and the necessity of ignoring one's own personal happiness in favor of a greater goal. Yongqi was quick to apologize, for he thought that he had displeased his father in some way. His father, however, only brushed aside his apologies and sighed deeply. Unable to stand the ambiguities of the conversation any longer, Yongqi begged his father to be blunt. So it was that the Emperor found himself sharing out loud, for the first time, his hopes that Yongqi would someday take up the mantle of the next ruler. However, he also remarked that he knew that Yongqi's heart may very well lay elsewhere. In a rather uncharacteristic move, the Emperor did not make any mandates on Yongqi but rather gave him time to think on the matter. Seeing from Yongqi's nod that the prince finally understood, the Emperor dismissed his son with clear indications that the choice was ultimately Yongqi's.
The next day, when the three young men met to discuss the results of their respective meetings, the deeply troubled expression on Yongqi's face stood in direct contrast to the gleeful smiles that graced that of ErKang and XiaoJian. Looking at their friend in concern, ErKang and XiaoJian demanded that he reveal his thoughts. When Yongqi finished his story, XiaoJian was the first to speak, "As XYZ's brother, my opinion on this matter should be clear. I would not like to put my sister in any position that might cause her unhappiness, and I am certain that it would suit her not at all to be one wife among many. Nonetheless, if I may be honest, I do think that you would one day make a great ruler. I do not envy you your position."
Yongqi nodded his thanks, "I know. I am well aware of XYZ's nature such that I would never willingly be the source of her sorrow. Her inner joy is one of the most precious aspects of her personality and I would guard it with my life. I would give up more than my title to ensure her happiness."
ErKang remarked thoughtfully, "Then it sounds as though your decision has already been made."
Yongqi sighed, "I think my heart had been set on this path before my brain could even comprehend the possibility. And yet, now that Huang-Ah-Ma has given me a choice, I feel so selfish in choosing my own happiness over my duty. At the same time, I cannot shake the feeling of guilt I feel towards my Er Niang. She had lived and died with such high hopes for me. Had she lived, she would have been appalled at my decision. Is it not an insult to her memory that I should choose to give up so easily something for which she spent her whole life fighting?"
ErKang could only offer Yongqi a sympathetic look in reply. XiaoJian, however, found that his respect for his sister's would-be suitor grew with this admission. Speaking in his usual direct way, XiaoJian remarked, "I think I can understand, if only a little. I too had struggled with thoughts on how my parents would have reacted to my current position. Perhaps my situation is different now that I know the truth, but the opinion held for a lifetime takes a long while to change."
Yongqi turned to him, "How then did you resolve your inner conflict?"
XiaoJian smiled slightly, "In my travels, I had met a monk who told of a most fascinating tale. He had at one time been the heir to a grand fortune, but the corruptions within his family had led to its ruin such that he was left destitute. In addition, the lady who he had loved had passed before her time. Nonetheless, he felt only gratefulness that she had not lived to see his sorrows. He himself felt no acute loss of his fortune but only a sense of freedom that he was no longer shackled by the expectations placed upon him. He felt no resentment towards his family or towards fate for the hand that has been dealt him. In his poverty, he had discovered a wealth of wisdom. In our travels together, he would often admonish me for holding onto the ghosts of the past. Though he believed in the sanctity of honoring his ancestors, he did not think that their wishes should be used to dictate the actions of the living. After all, it is we the living who must deal with the consequences of our choices. I was unwilling to accept his advice then, but now, with some reinforcement from my sister, I can look to the future rather than the past. I have made peace with all that has happened to my family and welcome the chance at a new beginning."
As Yongqi digested XiaoJian's tale, ErKang added his thoughts, "And I do not think that if you were to listen to the wishes of your heart that you would necessarily be acting in a manner that is contrary to your duty. Certainly I do not think you would stop contributing to the care and governing of this country even if you were not the one in charge. And really, from what I have observed regarding XYZ, I do not believe she would allow you to become idle in your golden palace. Liu Qing and Liu Hong tells me often that XYZ, ZiWei, and even Qing-er have developed quite the reputation in our city for doing much good for the common people. ZiWei has been hailed as the princess of the people and has taken such an appellation close to heart. Though she and Qing-er are constrained by the walls of the Forbidden City, they have continued to make with their own hands blankets for the poor and plain but comfortable clothes for the orphans. XYZ has been the face of their operation."
Yongqi looked startled at this news, "I had not thought XYZ capable of such serious deeds."
XiaoJian laughed, "My sister is not one to sit idle, and I found that I could not deny her such efforts. My parents had, in our hometown, been well known for their philanthropic efforts. I see XYZ's actions as just a continuation of the Fang legacy. I am glad, however, that she initiated it out of her own energies without knowledge of this background. She is her own person. I am also glad that she has found a worthy cause for her energies. I was worried that I would have to hire all the martial arts experts in this city to keep her occupied!"
Yongqi smiled fondly, "That does sound like XYZ."
XiaoJian clapped Yongqi on the shoulder, "I know my sister is not one to speak out loud her feelings, but I truly think she is very fond of you. I do believe she has put forth so much effort in transforming herself from an uncultured hooligan to a lively but intelligent young lady in part because of you. She might not be aware of it, at least not consciously, but I think her heart very much belongs to you. As her brother, I suppose I am expected to be most protective of my sister, but I cannot find fault with her choice."
Yongqi smiled gratefully. Squaring his shoulders, he nodded resolutely, "If she will have me, I will do right by her, I promise."
XiaoJian just smiled slightly, "I know."
ErKang's laugh broke the solemnest of the moment, "It is very well that you two are agreed, but what of XYZ herself? I cannot imagine that she would be happy towards her brother for giving her hand away without her knowledge, even if it is to a man for whom she holds the highest respect."
Yongqi shrugged, "Likely not, but I do intend to speak with her. I do not wish to answer HAM until I know her heart. And what of you, Er Kang? As ZiWei's brother, I must be certain that you will provide well for her. She is, after all, a princess."
At the look on Er Kang's face, Yongqi could no longer hold his somber expression and broke into laughter.
True to his words, Yongqi did find an occasion to speak to XYZ regarding the delicate issue of marriage. Er Kang and XiaoJian likewise made certain to raise the question of their respective ladies. Fortunately for the three young men, the girls, for the most part, blushingly accepted their suits. XYZ, true to prediction, was at first reluctant to accept that Yongqi held some non-platonic feelings for her. Only with his persistent patience and reassurances from ZiWei, Qing-er, and even XiaoJian did she begin to see that he was in earnest. On careful examination of her own feelings, she realized that she was not as indifferent to Yongqi as she would have liked to pretend. Indeed, in a rare moment of introspection, she saw that she could not imagine a future without Yongqi in her life. So, after a month of soul searching, she gave Yongqi the best birthday present he could wish for when, in a rare private moment at her brother's new estate, she shyly handed him a lantern with his name and the picture of a swallow bird for release into the night sky. The glow of the lantern floating above them was nothing compared to the lightness that Yongqi felt as he held her hands in his own even after their lantern had been released.
The slight nods that the young men gave towards the Emperor from their positions next to their respective ladies that night as they watched the fireworks explode over the rooftops of the Forbidden City in celebration of Wu Ah Ge's birthday was received with much joy. Yongqi of course made efforts the following day to explain his decision to his father. Though the Emperor felt some disappointment that Yongqi was effectively turning down the opportunity to become the heir, he was greatly comforted by Yongqi's promise to help mentor and support the person that the Emperor would ultimately choose.
A year later, the Forbidden City was once again a flurry of activity and celebration as a triple wedding was held. That year saw the visit from the Tibetan princess SaiYa, the surprising friendship that sprang up between her and XYZ (given both of their strong personalities, the majority of the court had expected them to become mortal enemies), and the unforeseen courtship between her and Er Tai. That year also saw the birth of Ling Fei's son who would become, though the young babe was not yet aware of it, the next Emperor of China. As a child, 15-Ah-Ge had an almost idyllic life. His mother remained the Emperor's favored concubine and his older brother, 5-Ah-Ge, was always willing to help him with his school work. He also enjoyed greatly the time he spent with Dong-er, who really was his nephew via his older sister Zi-Wei Ge Ge, but was treated as just a close friend. As he grew older, he also treasured the wisdom of the ErKang and XiaoJian. So, when he was crowned upon his father's death, he felt grateful to have the trustworthy advice of his elders and the service (and friendship) of their sons. His favorite relative, however, would remain his Xiao-Yan-Zi jie jie, whose zest for life and willingness to help the unfortunate left a profound impact on the young prince. Because of her, he dedicated his reign to fighting corruption and making policies to the greatest benefit of his people.
But as the Royal Court celebrated the marriage of three of its most beloved Ge Ge's (and really, XYZ was a Ge Ge in spirit if not in name), the future was still shrouded in mystery. The three couples themselves were more focused on the joy of the moment. As Yongqi held the sacred wedding wine to his lips and stared into the shiny eyes of his bride, he could not but marvel at his good fortune and feel grateful for the way Fate had guided his arrow that day on the hunting grounds. As Xiao Yan Zi blushed under the intensity of his gaze, she also sent a brief prayer to the gods, thanking them not only for giving her a family born of love and friendship, but also someone who cared for her with his whole being and was determined to become her support for life. As his lips settled upon her own, she felt that she finally understood the meaning of home.
