Chapter Ten: Meet the Cullens
BPOV
My love, my Edward, awoke slowly. The sun shined through the curtains covering his window, making his bronze colored hair shine and glimmer.
"Good morning," I said quietly. I could feel him smile, his face pointed away from me. He turned around slowly, yawning.
"Morning, Bella."
He got up, out of my arms. "No," I complained. He smiled again, making my heart melt again. Then he moved back to me, placing me in his lap. His stomach grumbled.
"Hungry?" I asked.
"No," he said, as his stomach rumbled again.
"I keep forgetting that you actually need food to start your day with. I'm so used to not having any food around the house. It's so weird!" I laughed.
"Yeah I know. I'm a pretty weird person," he replied. "I actually need something to fill my stomach every once in a while." I giggled.
"Ugh. I really need a shower," he said. "I must smell pretty bad."
"You always smell good to me," I responded.
"Why is that?" he asked.
I stared at the floor for a while, trying to think of a way to explain it so that he could understand more easily.
"What?" he asked. "Is it some vampire secret that I'm not supposed to know about?" He looked disappointed.
"No," I said. "It's just really hard to explain."
"I think I can keep up," he replied, flashing me a grin.
"Okay, so it's called 'La Tua Cantante.' That means that your blood sings for me. It's pretty rare, sometimes a vampire finds a human whose blood is particularly appealing, over all of the others' around it. The first day, in biology, I was restraining myself from attacking you, because you blood was almost calling me."
"Oh," he said. And then he was silent.
"Did I scare you?" I asked cautiously.
"No, I was just wondering that day why it seemed like you hated me so much; I guess I know why now," he said.
"Oh yeah. I didn't mean to freak you out or anything, but it was just such a surprise to me. I mean, that had never happened before."
"What does my blood smell like?" he asked.
I laughed. "I don't know, it's really hard to explain. Your blood…it's kind of like spicy."
He gave me a weird look. "Not like Mexican spicy, no. The farthest thing from that. It's like cinnamon, and ginger. Kind of like the spices in Spanish food. It's the most amazing blood I have ever smelled in my two-hundred and ten years as a vampire."
Edward laughed nervously. "Oh don't worry," I said. "Your blood doesn't bother me much anymore. When I fell in love with you, my vampire nature became hidden behind my other, human instincts."
"Oh, that's good," he said. "Now, after that appetizing conversation, I think I'm going to go eat breakfast now."
I giggled. Edward walked out of the room and I followed, down the stairs, to the very small kitchen. He pulled out a bowl, some milk, and Count Chocula cereal. He poured the cereal into the bowl and then added the milk.
He took a big bite, chewing slowly and thoughtfully. "Is that stuff actually any good?" I asked, curious.
"Well…it's nothing compared to your preference of sweet and sour elk blood," he replied, laughing.
"Yum," I said. "Now that's what I call a healthy and nutritious breakfast."
"Yep," he said. Once he finished the cereal, he drank the milk, which was now chocolate, from the bowl. "Okay, I'm going to go take a shower," he said.
"Okay, I'll be waiting in your room when you're done. I have to go change anyways."
"Can you really run all the way to your house, change, and run back by the time I take my shower?" he asked, skeptically.
"Race you," I said, challenging him.
"You're on."
"Okay, on the count of three. One…two…three!" I ran out of the front door, laughing. I could feel him staring after me. This was going to be way too easy. I ran slower than normal, trying to give him a chance to win, even though that was impossible. I eventually got to the mansion. He probably wasn't even in the shower yet.
I ran up the stairs to my room and threw off my clothes. I yanked on a pair of jeans, a white and black blouse with a flowered print, and my simple black pair of high heels. Then, I ran out of the mansion. I was running faster now, almost flying. Through the forest, down the roads, I flew. I walked in the front door, ran up the stairs and heard the shower water running. I laughed quietly to myself.
I ran into Edward's room, sitting on his bed and began staring at the ceiling, thinking of the day we were about to begin. About five minutes later, my Edward walked into the room, dressed in a green t-shirt that really brought out his eyes, and khaki pants. He looked amazing.
"Edward," I whispered.
He turned around, startled. "Dammit! I really thought I had you beat this time!" He exclaimed, disappointed. "When did you even get here?"
"Oh, about five minutes ago," I replied, laughing. "I even ran to my house at a slower speed than normal!" I said. "You're so slow!"
"Sorry! I have to perfect my vampire speed." I laughed.
"So are you ready to meet my family?" I asked enthusiastically.
Edward sighed. "Well…I guess so…"
"Scared?" I teased.
"I don't know. It could end up being a horror story. You never know with vampires."
"Come on, stop making fun of my family and let's go already!"
"Car or run?"
"Which do you prefer?"
"I'd rather take the car; I wouldn't like it if your family thought I was drunk at like ten o'clock in the morning or something. I laughed.
"Okay," I replied. We went down the stairs and out to the driveway. Edward got into the drivers' side of my Buick and put the keys into the ignition. The car roared to life. I jumped.
"Jesus! I'm so used to the quiet start of my car! That scared me!"
"The starting of my car scared you, the two-hundred and ten year old vampire?" Edward asked, amused.
"Shut up, Edward," I responded. He laughed and smiled his angel smile.
As Edward drove back to my house, my love grabbed my hand and squeezed it tightly, communicating all of his thoughts, worries, and joys, in just one simple squeeze. The warmth tickled my skin again, making me wish I could cry.
"Where do I turn?" he asked.
"Just keep following the road, I'll let you know." Edward kept driving, not saying another word. He still seemed very anxious.
"Now," I said. Edward missed the turn.
"Turn around," I said impatiently. He gave me a sheepish smile and executed a very dangerous u-turn. He slowed down this time, waiting for my cue.
"Okay, turn now." This time, he made it onto my driveway. As we pulled up, Edward got quieter and quieter.
"Edward," I said his name, startling him. "Calm down. They'll love you." He didn't say a word, just grabbed my hand and intertwined my fingers with his. My love took a deep breath and I lead him up to the front door. "Ready?" I asked. He just nodded, squeezing my hand tighter.
I opened the door, and he walked inside. I followed, closing the front door behind me. I heard Esme walk up to Edward.
"Edward," she said cautiously, almost as if she was afraid she would scare him.
"Hello," Edward replied in his quiet ,musical voice.
"My name is Esme. Welcome to my home." Edward smiled slightly and looked behind, at me, still scared. I squeezed his hand, encouraging him.
Carlisle came up behind Esme, holding her waist. He reached out to shake my love's hand. Edward looked at me and I nodded. Edward grasped Carlisle's cold hand, shaking it.
"How do you do?" Carlisle asked. "My name is Carlisle."
Edward replied cautiously. "Fine, thank you. And you?"
"I'm doing pretty well right now," Carlisle replied, a smile in his voice.
"Oh, and my name is Edward," Edward added hastily.
"It's very nice to meet you. Bella's told us so much about you." Edward gave me a disproving look, full of menace. I laughed easily. Then Alice came bounding down the stairs, Jasper close behind her.
"Edward!" she squealed happily. Then she ran over to him and gave him a hug and two kisses on both of his cheeks. Edward had a very awkward look on his face when Alice was done with her greeting. Alice also eyed Edward's clothes, evaluating him.
"Hi," he said, self consciously.
"My name is Alice," my sister said, trying to control her voice, yet unable to in her pure joy. She gestured to Jasper. "And this is my boyfriend, Jasper."
"Hello," Edward said again, uncomfortable with all of the introductions at once. Unfortunately, he would have to deal with one more.
"So, this is the human boy?" Emmett came in the room, asking me playfully.
"Shut up, Emmett!" I exclaimed. Edward gripped my hand tighter. Emmett held out his hand in a fist to Edward. Edward hit it. My love looked at me.
"Ow," he whispered in my ear so only I could possibly hear him.
Emmett laughed. "So this is Edward?" Emmett asked.
"Yes," Edward replied, defensively.
"Hmm…" Emmett said, looking Edward up and down, from his toes to his bronze colored hair. "I don't know Bella…" he trailed off. I laughed and Edward grinned. Emmett was so easy to like, so easy to get along with. He was hilarious. "Like I was saying, I don't know if he's the right guy for you, Bella. I wouldn't know, but he looks pretty scrawny." Emmett flexed his gigantic muscles. Alice and Carlisle laughed at Emmett's joke.
"Emmett," Esme said warningly. "We don't want Edward to run out of the house screaming."
"Will everyone please stop talking about Edward like he isn't here?" I asked. We all laughed, Emmett laughing the hardest at his own joke. Even Jasper joined in this time, laughing quietly, putting his arm around Alice's back and kissing her spiky black hair.
I watched as Edward's eyes trailed over to the grand piano sitting in the living room. His beautiful green eyes widened with curiosity, as if he was itching to go over there. The piano was normally just a decoration; none of our family was very musical, but Esme convinced Carlisle that it matched the rest of the room.
Alice had seen Edward's eyes move too. "Do you play?" Alice asked, curiously. Edward looked horrified.
"Um…" he said trailing off. "Yes?"
"Will you play something for us?" I asked quietly, whispering in his ear. He looked into my eyes and then nodded. He walked over to the piano and sat down, very at ease, as if he belonged there, as if he was born to sit at the piano.
"You inspired this one," he mumbled into the ever present silence of the Cullen household. And then he began to play. I lost myself to the beautiful music. The music sounded like and sort of had the tone of a lullaby, but it was unbelievably sweet and flowing. It was the most remarkable piece of music I had ever heard, in all of my two-hundred and ten years of life. Plus the seventeen years that I had lived before that.
The music continued flowing, like a quiet stream. I had to restrain myself from crying. And then I remembered that vampires couldn't cry. Yet the music was so outstanding that it could have probably made me cry, even as a vampire.
Edward's fingers moved expertly across the unused keys, creating this extraordinary beauty. This never ending feeling of love. As the piece ended, I realized that everyone else had left the room, leaving us by ourselves.
The final note in the song was high and Edward held the pedal to make it last longer, ringing out into the silence.
"Where did everyone else go?" he asked. "Did they not like it? Do they not like me?" His face looked horrified at the thought.
"It is completely impossible that they couldn't have liked it," I replied. My Edward smiled my favorite crooked smile. "And did you see how they all reacted when you came in the door? Alice especially. She's gotten bored playing dress up with me. And Rosalie flat-out refuses to let Alice dress her up."
"Where was Rosalie?" he asked.
"She was upstairs, in her and Emmett's room. I don't know why, but she's completely opposed to you. She's been acting as if I don't exist. I guess she's still worried that you're going to tell the whole world about us. But I told her that she was being ridiculous. She doesn't understand…us. Our relationship," I clarified.
"Thanks for defending me," he said quietly.
"What do you call that piece of music?" I asked, quickly changing topics, hoping that Rosalie would not upset him.
"Bella's lullaby," he said slowly. And I laughed and ran up to him and kissed his so passionately, it was nothing like I had ever experienced before. This kiss made our kiss in the meadow seem like practice or something. I opened my mouth, letting his tongue in. I pressed my cold hands against his chest, feeling his hard muscles, his perfect body. He snaked his arm around my neck, pulling me in closer, never wanting to let go.
We broke apart and looked into each others' eyes. "Wow," he said. I giggled, surprised also that this kiss was even better than the meadow.
"Come on," I said. "I want to show you my room." Edward nodded, enthusiastically. I swept him off his feet and ran him up the stairs and into my room.
I set Edward down and he gasped, staring around at the king sized bed, the large closet, the shelves and shelves of books. The giant windows eventually caught his eyes. He stared out at the midday clouds of Forks and smiled.
"Wow," he mouthed. I nodded, walking up to him and leaning my head against his shoulder, linking my arm through his.
"Jesus, Bella! How many books do you have?" he said, as he looked at my bookshelves, his green eyes alight with awe.
"I don't know," I laughed. "I just love reading."
"I can tell," he replied. And then he walked over to the bed and laid his head down on the soft pillow. I went over to him, lying myself down next to him. He stared at the canopy overhead. I could hear his head whirling with thoughts of today, of my family.
"What's with Jasper?" he asked suddenly.
"I already told you," I said. Edward looked at me. "Okay, fine. I kind of asked Alice to ask him to keep his distance from you. I didn't want you getting hurt."
"I trust him," Edward responded quietly.
"I know. I trust him too. But I would never take any risks with you, you know." I turned my head and smiled at him.
"Emmett is hilarious!" Edward exclaimed.
"I know," I replied, laughing. "I've been hearing his jokes for a pretty long time now though. They get kind of predictable sometimes." He laughed.
"Yeah, I could imagine that," he said. Then he leaned over and kissed me, lightly, his lips moving soft and slowly, but surely. As if this kiss sealed our fate together. And I knew, after this kiss, that we were meant to be together.
"I love you," he whispered. I reached up and kissed his nose, softly.
"I love you too," I replied. Suddenly, we were interrupted by a very annoying and intruding vampire.
"What is it, Emmett?" I called.
"It's Rosalie," a soft voice replied. Edward looked at me, shocked.
"Come in," I called, sitting up. Edward moved me onto his lap, hugging me tight, closer to his body. Rosalie, wearing a deep red strapless shirt and a pair of skinny jeans, her golden curls piled atop her head, in all her perfection, walked through the door.
"Edward, I'm sorr–" she started. But he cut her off.
"It's okay, Rosalie. I know that you're afraid that if Bella and I get closer, it will somehow harm Emmett, your family, your life here. I understand what you're feeling and I forgive you. But you also have to know that if I revealed your secret, I would lose Bella forever. And I don't think that I could handle that. I could never hurt you, Rosalie, even if I wanted to. I could never do that. You've done nothing wrong."
Rosalie gazed at Edward in awe. "Thank you, Edward," she mumbled. Emmett was waiting for her at the door.
"Thank you for understanding Rosalie's point of view, Edward," Emmett called over to us. "Oh, and PS, Edward, Jasper and I were wondering if you wanted to play some games with us in probably thirty minutes." Emmett looked hopeful.
My love laughed his musical laugh. "Okay, Emmett. But there is no possible way that I'm going to bet on who's going to win."
Emmett face fell. "Dammit," he muttered. Rosalie hit him on the arm, playfully. "Okay fine. But I will eventually get you gambling, Edward." He walked out of the room, his arm draped around Rosalie's shoulder.
"Will we be like that someday?" Edward asked, well actually mumbled, quietly.
"Huh?" I asked cautiously, feigning innocence and ignorance at the topic that Edward was about to address.
"You know," he struggled for the right words, "together? Forever?" he hinted.
"What are you talking about?" I asked.
"How do you get turned into a vampire?" Edward asked suddenly. I sighed, not wanting to tell him, but also knowing that I must. He had a right to know.
"You know, we don't have fangs, but our teeth carry within them a type of venom. It takes much concentration to turn a human into a vampire. Normally, the vampire inflicting the bite gets caught up in the blood and is carried away to the point of murder of the subject. But if the venom is left in the system, to spread, in about three days, the human will be a vampire. It is extremely painful, as the venom is changing your whole being, your whole existence.
"How were you changed?" he asked.
"You know that I was seventeen during the time of the French Revolution," I started. Edward nodded. "Well, I was trying to save my brother, a revolutionary, who was shot in the chest. I ran out onto the field, trying to drag his dying body off when I was shot in the shoulder. When my brother died, I started running and eventually collapsed."
Edward nodded once more. "That's when Carlisle found me. He knew from the amount of blood coming out of my wound, that I was minutes from death. He decided to risk everything, to try and change me into an immortal being."
My love gazed at the canopy above my bed for a long time, trying to imagine the scene in which I spent my last moments.
"Will you ever turn me into a vampire?" he asked quietly.
I gaped at him, my mouth dropping.
"We're not having this discussion now," I said quietly.
"But–" I cut him off.
"No," I said. "I have to talk to Carlisle first. Think about it Edward. You will be doomed to an eternity on earth. There's nothing after death for our kind. You'll have to give up all your friends, your family…" I trailed off.
"But I'll have you!" he exclaimed. "I don't need my friends. I'll have you, and your family. Esme. Carlisle. Emmett. Jasper. Alice. Rosalie…" he began to list off all of the members of the Cullen family.
"Charlie?" I asked quietly. "Renée? Phil?" I was hitting him hard, throwing the names of people he cared about at him. You could say that I was hitting below the belt. He looked at me, a defeated expression on his perfect angel face, his lips opening to try and come up with a defense. "You don't know what you're giving up." I finished.
"Yes I do. And I also know what I'm gaining in return. Give to get."
"Edward, I can't talk about this right now."
"Fine," he replied, turning away from me. He looked disappointed.
"Edward…" I said. "I don't know if I could do that to you," I said. "I could kill you," I whispered, almost inaudibly.
"I trust you," he said.
"I know you do, Edward. And I trust you. But right now, you have to trust me to do the right thing for both of us. Okay?" I pleaded, knowing that he was unhappy with me. But he didn't understand what he would be giving up.
"Come on," he mumbled, smiling again and grabbing my wrist. "Let's go see Emmett and Jasper cream me at video games."
I laughed, still a bit anxious though. He smiled at me. And I grabbed his wrist, pulling him out of my room. I knew that he was my destiny. We were going off to face new challenges, no matter how silly, hand in hand, together.
Okay guys, like it or hate it! Remember to review! LOVE YOU ALL!!
