Something I Need
Are you awake?
Lydia, it's 11pm in the Summer Holidays, of course I'm awake.
Is everything okay?
I can't sleep. Nightmares.
Meet me at the end of your drive in 30 mins
Why?
Summer Adventure.
As soon as he saw Lydia's text he knew what he had to do, no matter how weird it would seem at first. He pulled on a pair of black running shorts and his grey Lacrosse t-shirt and told his Dad he was going out, knowing he'd understand the circumstances. He practically waltzed towards his car in the hot night air and drove towards the other side of town without seeing another human being. He pulled up at the end of her drive and sat there waiting for a few moments drumming Eye of The Tiger on his steering wheel before he saw Lydia slowly creeping towards him. Stiles had only seen her like this once before; she was wearing a pair of navy cotton shorts with a grey UMich tshirt over them and a pair of sneakers which shocked him to no end and her face clear of makeup. He wanted to say how pretty she looked to be honest but he didn't want to scare her away because he knew it was a rare and special occurrence to see Lydia Martin not looking like the Queen Bee she was.
"Thanks for coming." Lydia said with a small smile, "I didn't mean to drag you out of your bed."
"Oh it's fine I was just watching TV slightly illegally on my computer, it's no biggie." He said pulling away from the curb, "As you can tell I have an enthralling social life." He said with a smirk,
"Yeah well I did until I went crazy." Lydia said with a sigh and a hint of resentment as she tucked a piece of hair behind her ear,
"Popularity's overrated." Stiles said honestly, "it's also effort by the looks of it."
"What are you implying Stilinksi?" Lydia asked teasing him almost, "Are you saying I don't look beautiful enough to be Queen Bee at the moment?" She asked in a mock outraged voice,
"Oh god no!" Stiles blurted out at lightning speed, "You look so pretty right now-"
"I was messing with you dumbass." Lydia said with a laugh giving him a light shove, "But I'm glad to know I have that effect on you, it may be useful for future endeavours."
"Oh big word. You must be a genius or something."
"Oh shut up." She said laughing as she put her feet up on her dashboard, "So where're we going?"
"It's a secret." Stiles replied flicking through the radio channels to find some good music,
"You're not going to murder me are you?"
"Oh no if I was doing that I would take you in the other direction, it's farther away from the police station." He deadpanned,
"I'm not sure whether to laugh or run away…" Lydia said through a small laugh,
"I tend to have that affect." He said as he flashed her a grin, something he couldn't help himself do whenever he was around her.
"Okay so, tell me, seriously." She persisted again.
"Nope, you'll just have to wait and see." He said turning up the radio, "Now shush I like this song." He continued as he looked at her out of the corner of his eye. She was smiling, her smile lit up his world, with her hand out of the open window moving it through the hot night air singing along silently to the music. Stiles took a mental picture and saved it for a rainy day.
Half an hour later the big red warehouse came into sight, "Stiles," Lydia started calmly, "Did you drag me out to Target in the middle of the night?" She asked,
"Yup." He replied popping the 'P'.
"Why?!" She asked in an overly dramatic tone, the look of confusion on her face was adorable, "I'm so confused." She mumbled.
"Well, when my Mum died… well before she died she went… I don't know how to describe it without sounding like a terrible person, but I guess she went kind of crazy. Like she would randomly start screaming in the middle of the night, wake up in the woods, wander off. It was horrible and after she died I had nightmares about all that stuff, about my Mum, my dad and Scott you know?" He asked but Lydia didn't. Not really. "So when I woke up in the middle of the night, refusing to go back to sleep, Dad would drive us both out here and we would roam the aisles for maybe 10 minutes or sometimes 2 hours picking up random shit until I wasn't that scared anymore."
"Wow." Was all Lydia could come up with as Stiles parked his jeep in the abandoned lot.
"Yeah, I guess… I've never really told anyone that before." Stiles replied shaking his head slightly as they exited the car,
"Your secrets safe with me Stilinski," Lydia said with a kind smile as she bumped his shoulder with hers,
"Sorry that got deep really quickly." Stiles said with a nervous laugh as he scratched the back of his neck,
"No no no it's fine!" Lydia hurriedly replied, feeling honoured he'd chosen to share that piece of information with her,
"Okay," he said shaking off his nerves as they stopped by the trollies, "How bad was the nightmare? Like basket big or trolley big?"
"Um I'm not sure…" Lydia replied, "I mean I've had worse but it was enough for me to text you I guess…"
"Okay, small trolley." He answered himself as he practically waltzed over and wheeled back a bright red trolley. "Allonsy."
"Allonsy?" Lydia asked, raising an eyebrow,
"Doctor Who?"
"Oh I know where it's from I'm just surprised, I thought Star Wars held your heart." Lydia replied flashing him a smile,
"One can like more than one nerdy thing, Lyd." Stiles said with a laugh, "Their not mutually exclusive."
"But the rules are different!" She stated as they walked down the first aisle, Stiles aimlessly picking up a packet of toilet roll and chucking it in the trolley,
"What rules?" Stiles asked leaning his forearms on the trolley as they carried on strolling down the empty aisle,
"Of like timey wimey space wacey. Doesn't It annoy you?" She asked, irritation over the subject seeping into her voice,
"Wow, so technical, but nope. I mean I've never really thought about it. Doctor Who is set in a different universe with a different set of rules about space compared to Star Wars." Stiles replied with a shrug, "Anyway, I didn't have you down for a Doctor Who fan." He continued with a smirk,
"What? I like British accents and good stories. Sue me." She replied with a shrug.
"Fair enough." Stiles said with a smile, still not taking his eyes off her as she looked at the shelves,
"I don't actually need anything…" Lydia said looking round,
"Well that's the point, I pick up random stuff I might need later that's essential." Stiles said chucking in a 3 pack of toothpaste,
"What like toilet roll and toothpaste?" Lydia asked as she chucked in a pack of hair bands,
"Well I don't like being caught short…" Stiles replied with his trade mark grin making her roll her eyes,
"You're such a boy."
"Congratulations on your observational skill Lydia." Stiles retorted still smiling, as they turned onto the next aisle, talking for maybe a half an hour about pointless subject matter.
"OH I wanted that." Lydia said as they strolled down the aisle filled with books, albums, and dvds, "I've never seen The Office."
"What?" Stiles asked shocked, "How?!"
"I don't know." Lydia answered with a shrug as she chucked several box sets in,
"But Jim and Pam!" Stiles started before Lydia clamped a hand over his mouth,
"Spoilers!" She said with a smile before removing her hand, "We can watch it together then if it means that much to you."
"It's a date then." Stiles said without thinking, "I mean not an actual date, like a 'hey Im gonna put that in my diary' type thing. Oh god." Stiles mumbled before hitting his head on his forearms,
"You have a diary?" Lydia asked,
"Really. That's what you got from that?" Stiles said, blushing slightly, "Sorry. I'm a bit-"
"It's fine." Lydia said with a laugh as she watched him chuck in an old Norah Jones album, he saw her raise an eyebrow at him,
"It was Mum's favourite and Dad wore out her CD and it's his birthday next week. Plus she has a nice voice." He said with another shoulder shrug,
"I know. My dad saw her in concert once and fell asleep he was so relaxed." Lydia said as her and Stiles started laughing in sync. Lydia watched as Stiles threw in item after item, varying from box sets to packets of gum and realised he was extremely at ease here,
"You still get nightmares don't you?" Lydia asked quietly as they strolled down the cereal aisle,
"Huh?" Stiles asked, his eyebrows scrunching together making him look adorable,
"You still get nightmares, it looks like you do this often." Lydia said again, softer this time.
"It's not a big deal." Stiles said with a shrug, "Nobody knows though because I don't want them worrying-"
"Should they be worrying?" Lydia cut in,
"No, at least not anymore." He said quietly, suddenly not meeting her eye, "I'm doing better now."
"Good." Lydia said in a whisper, "But if for some reason you suddenly start not to do better you call me right away, you understand?" She said firmly before taking his hand, "Because if you die I will literally go out of my freaking mind okay?" She said with a small smile before quickly giving him a kiss on his cheek.
"Okay." He said blushing slightly, her tiny hand still wrapped around his larger one,
"So you wanna tell me about yours or not?" He asked as she finally let go,
"It's hard to explain because I know it's not that scary… it's just… I was in this glass box, and it was dark and it started filling up with water and then there were all these voices in my head and that freaked me out and then I was out of the box I saw around me, in like this warehouse like Scott and Allison and that Lahey kid you know? And some Asian girl and they were all fighting some sort of ninjas or something and god this sounds so stupid…" She said shaking her head, "but then for some reason you and me were in a tunnel and you were slumped over, barely breathing and I was crouched above you screaming someone's name and I have no idea what happened because I was then suddenly I woke up shaking and feeling like I was going to be sick I was so scared and I was crying and… yeah. I needed to be with someone who cared about me so I texted you." She finished with a shrug.
"Wow." Stiles said looking at her as she chucked a massive pack of Reeses into the trolley,
"Still not the worst." Lydia said casually,
"Peter?" Stiles asked,
"You mean Satan in a V-Neck right?" Lydia asked again with a slight hint of sarcasm and a bitterness- no a hatred in her voice,
"Same thing right?" Stiles asked with a smirk,
"Basically." She replied as she chucked in a 6 pack of chocolate milkshake,
"Wow, you really like chocolate." Stiles said standing up straighter and trying to stifle a yawn as they turned into the clothes section, he immediately threw in a red, navy and white tshirt.
"Who doesn't?" She asked as she threw in a pair of shorts similar to the ones she was wearing,
"Scott." Stiles said, "He finds it too sweet."
"What the hell?!"
"I know right!" Stiles exclaimed, "I've been saying it's weird for years!"
"That's because it is weird." Lydia said with a laugh, before yawning, "Wow I'm tired."
"That's the beauty of this. You get so distracted it tires you out." Stiles said doing a u-turn, "to the tills we go!"
"Wow," Lydia said as they approached the completely desolate checkout, "It's so busy, I think we're going to be here for hours!"
"Hilarious." Stiles said with a grin as he guided the trolley towards the elderly lady on the till, "Hi Brenda!" he said cheerfully before launching into a full out conversation about her dog. He passed over the money before Lydia could object and soon they were heading out towards the car, Lydia lacking slightly behind from exhaustion. She saw Stiles stop,
"See the bar at the front of the trolley? Yeah okay put your feet on that and hold on." Stiles instructed as Lydia carefully did so, "Now hold on!" He said before he started running towards his jeep. He heard Lydia give a shriek as her hair billowed out behind her and a smile appeared on her face,
"It's like flying!" She yelled as he increased in speed causing her to whoop again, he bypassed his jeep and did another lap of the huge parking lot causing her to laugh. Eventually when he stopped by the car his chest was heaving and Lydia's hair was twice the size it had previously been.
"Fun?" He asked as he unlocked his car,
"You have no idea!" She said still grinning, "That's awesome!"
"I used to love it so much." He said with a matching grin as he started,
"Thanks for bringing me here tonight, I had a really fun time." Lydia said giving his arm a squeeze,
"Yeah me to." Stiles said smiling down at her, "Perhaps this could be our thing."
"I think I'm absolutely fine with that."
