"Steve," I whispered to him the next morning.

"Mhmm," he groaned. He moved around in the bed. His eyes were puffy and his arms tightly wrapped around me. I couldn't breathe.

"We have to go," I struggled to get out. He turned to face me and opened his eyes. He practically jumped out of bed.

"I-I'm so...What?...Lottie let me-" he stuttered.

"Steve, calm down," I said getting out of bed and wrapping my dressing gown around me.

"It's not," he said forcefully.

"Nothing happened, obviously. We were both upset and needed a friend," I tried to tell him. He wouldn't listen to me though.

"Um, we need to go, they'll be waiting for us," he said. I nodded my head and watched him leave the room. He was flustered, in a wreck over Bucky and we were about to take down HYDRA. I wasn't sure this was the best idea.

"Johann Schmidt belongs in a bug house. He thinks he's a god and e's willing to blow up half the world to prove it. Starting with the U.S.A.," the Colonel told us.

"Schmidt's working with powers beyond our capabilities. He'll wipe out the entire eastern seaboard in an hour," Stark alerted us all as he took a seat. Steve put down some paper and I rubbed my eyes. We were in trouble.

"How much time we got?" Gabe asked.

"According to my new best friend, under 24 hours," the Colonel said.

"Where is he now?" I asked.

"Hydra's last base is here," the Colonel said pointing to a picture in his hand. "In the Alps, 500 feet below the surface. Jim picked the photos up from where the Colonel had put them down and looked at them in disbelief.

"What are we supposed to do?" he asked. "It's not like we can just knock on the front door."

"Why not?" asked Steve from the other side of the table. We all turned to look at him. "That's exactly what we're going to do."

"We can't all go in at once. They're sure to wipe half of us out," Dum Dum spoke up.

"That's why I'm going," Steve said.

"Are you sure you're not blinded by revenge Captain?" I asked him. I knew his decision to go alone was to prove to Scmidt that he couldn't break him.

"Not at all." Steve got up and left the table. I put my head in my hands as people started making plans around me. It was all coming to a head and I didn't know what would happen.

"Everyone clear on what's happening?" Steve asked us all as we go ready to leave.

"If we don't it's too late now," James replied softly.

"Well Commandos, it's been a pleasure," Steve said softly as we all stopped. We all looked to one another, knowing it was our biggest mission yet and some of us might not come back.

"It's been a pleasure following you too," Dum Dum spoke up.

"Steven, your bike," Stark said wheeling out his high-tech motorbike. "Ear pieces," he said handing them out. We gave him a thankful look and we set out.

"Well, we'll see you soon," she told us. She gave me a hug before joining the Assault team with Jacques and Jim. James, Dum Dum and Gabe started to head off to their position. But I couldn't follow them.

"Steve," I said grabbing his hand. "Promise me, you'll come back." He knew I had reservations about this type of tactic, yet he was willing to compromise.

"Just like you'll always come back to me, I'll always come back to you Charlotte," he told me. He pushed the hair out of my face and placed a kiss on my forehead. He walked away an got on to his bike, revving it up. "

"Andrews!" James called. I turned away a walked to them. We had to get to that point so we could intervene when Steve needed us most.

We arrived to our point and waited patiently. We listened to our ear pieces, only hearing things being blown up and the sound of the motorbikes engine.

"I wonder what's happening," Gabe said as he took a seat on a snow covered rock.

"He's kicking some serious ass," Dum Dum joked as he dusted his bowler hat. We listened on, and heard german being spoken. Gabe stood up, it was time.

"Arrogance may not be a uniquely American trait. But I must say you do it better than , there are limits, to what even you can do, did Erskine tell you otherwise?" Schmidt taunted.

We all listened in. "He told me you were insane," Steve replied.

"Ah, he resented my genius. Tried to deny me of what was rightfully mine, but he gave you everything. So, what makes you so special?" he asked Steve.

"Ready yourselves boys," I told them. They got the cross bows and lines ready and waited for my order.

"Nothing, I'm just a kid from Brooklyn," Steve told him. There was a series of whacks, being heard and Steve's coughing. After he stopped he said, "I could do this all day."

"Oh, of course you can, of course. But unfortunately I'm on a tight schedule," Schmidt told him. I heard the sound of one of the HYDRA weapons being taken out and aimed.

"Now!" I yelled. The boys shot their bows and secured their lines on the side of Schmidt's office. They took a running start while I jumped off the ledge and unfurled my wings. We moved towards the glass and crashed in.

"So am I," Steve told Schmidt. We started shooting, taking down the HYDRA members, Schmidt getting away.

"Rogers," James called out. Steve turned to him. "You might need this," he finished throwing the shield at Steve.

"Thanks!" he called out running after Schmidt.

"We're in! Assault team go!" Gabe yelled through the ear piece.

"Move out!" We heard the Colonel order.

After we'd finished in the office, we moved on through the corridors, taking on unsuspecting HYDRA men.

"Find a position on Rogers," I called out. I could here his shield being thrown and hitting various pieces of metal.

"Found him!" Peggy yelled, a series of shots being rung out. We caught up to Peggy and the Colonel.

"What now?" James asked.

"The planes," the Colonel ordered. "We've got to stop them from taking off." We all made our way down to the plane hanger, managing to stop a few board the planes until a whole lot of other HYDRA soldiers came too.

I caught sight of Steve swinging by a metal chain across all the men. His shield deflecting every blue bullet sent his way. He began running after the plane that was taking off, no doubt with Schmidt inside.

"He won't make it!" I called out to the Colonel as I fought off an attacker.

"The car!" he said catching sight off Schmidt's toy.

"Charlotte, hurry up!" Peggy said as she made her way over o the car. I couldn't get out of my predicament thought, there was too many off them.

"Go! Before it's too late!" I told them. They nodded and took off in the car. From what I could see they'd picked him up and started after the plane.

"We've got the tower!" Jim yelled from above. They captured the tower finally. The remaining HYDRA soldiers went down easily, surrendering know that Schmidt was gone and so was their only remaining power.

We made our way up to the tower to wait, and could see the car.

"Charlotte?" came his voice through the ear piece.

"Steve?"

"You're my best girl ," he said. I left the tower and started off down the runway. He wasn't about to tell me these things over radio and there was no way I was letting him go without a proper kiss. I flapped my wings as hard as I could and made my way towards him.

"You better get on that plane," I told him.

"I'm trying," he said. From a distance I saw him make it, the car Peggy and the Colonel was in had stopped just in time. I flew faster, flying right by them.

"Steve wait!" I yelled catching up to them. He was clinging to the wheel. I flew over, grabbed onto it too and looked at him. "You're my guy," I said. I pulled him into me for a kiss. It was hard and passionate, but none the less perfect. We pulled apart and he looked a little gobsmacked but smiled.

"See you soon," he told me.

"Go get 'em" I smiled. I let go of the plane and fell back into the distance, watching as he weaved his way inside.

We waited in the tower for voice to come over the radio. The last thing we heard before we assumed Steve's earpiece had broken or fallen out and fell somewhere, was Schmidt mocking Steve's uniform and something about flags.

Peggy and the Colonel were watching me as if I were an unstable person, about to act up at any moment. Steve was not only someone who'd I come to love, but he was my best friend way before that. I couldn't lose Abe, Bucky and Steve all at one time. It just wasn't fair.

"Come in, this is Captain Rogers," Steve voice broke the silence in the room.

"Captain Rogers, what's your..." Jim started. But I cut him off moving him out of the way.

"Steve, is that you? Are you alright?" I asked him.

"Lottie! Schmidt's dead!" he told us.

"What about the plane?" I asked him.

"That's a little bit tougher to explain," he said.

"Give me your co-ordinates, I'll find you a safe landing site," I told him.

"There's not going to be a safe landing. I'm going to try and force it down," he told me. I looked to the Colonel who was moving everyone out of the room. No, this was not it. This wasn't happening.

"I'll get Howard on the line, he'll know what to do," I pleaded.

"There's not enough time. This thing's moving too fast and it's heading for New York." There was a slight pause and I could hear his nervous breathing. Tears started to well in my eyes, I knew what he was going to say next. "I've got to put her in the water."

"Please, don't do this. We have time, we can work it out," I tried to reason. The sobs were caught in the back of my throat.

"Right now I'm in the middle of nowhere, if I wait any longer a lot of people are going to die," he told me. I didn't know what to say. "Lottie, this is my choice."

I sighed. My heart was slowly breaking, it couldn't handle anymore loss. I wasn't going to lose Steve, not like this. I heard the creak of the handle and closed my eyes. Maybe I was.

"Lottie?"

"I'm here," I sobbed softly.

"It may take me a little longer than I thought to come back to you," he said.

"Alright," I said wiping a tear away from my eye. "But when you do, we're going dancing and you'll teach me how to draw."

"I might step on your toes during the fast songs," he told me.

"I don't care as long as you're with me," I told him. I could hear the plane rattle, getting closer to it's demise.

"Charlotte, I lo-" his voice cut out with radio silence. I sniffed, my tears were flowing now.

"Steve?" I asked, more silence. "Steve?" I waited again. Nothing. "Steve?". I heard footsteps leave the edge of the room and lied my head down on the table. My tears covered the sleeves of my uniform.

"Charlotte?" Peggy's soft voice came.

"He's gone," I screamed into her body when she picked me up and hugged me tight. "He's gone! He promise to come back to me!"

"It'll be okay Char, I promise," she said soothingly. I sobbed in her for what felt like hours. My adoptive father and two best friends, gone in the same year. The tears all came at once and Peggy caught them all.

Two years later

I arrived home from the search with Howard on a Thursday. We found the tessarect but no Steve and I couldn't handle it anymore. Steve was gone and I had to deal with it. Everything looked the same except for the absence of Abe. The Colonel had obviously sent someone in to clear away his stuff, only leaving me a box on the dining table. Along with some letters too.

I dumped my bags, on the floor and walked over, opening a letter from England from 1945. I tipped it opened and out fell a picture of Steve, from before the serum infusion.

Dearest Charlotte,

I found this and thought you may want it.

Despite the distance between you and I at the moment, I'm always here for you and my invite for you to live with me when I arrive in New York is always open.

Love always,

Peggy.

I closed the letter and stared at the man in the picture. It was Steve. Steve before the serum, before the war, before he broke my heart into a billion pieces. It was the Steve I'd first loved. A knock at the door broke me out of my reverie.

"Yes?" I asked as I opened it, not noticing the men on the other side.

"Agent Charlotte Andrews?" the man asked.

"Depends whose asking," I told them. If the war had taught me anything, it was to never answer a question without yours being answered first.

"My name is James Howlett," he said.

"Howlett as in my mother Isobelle Howlett?" I asked. The man in question nodded. "Come in then."

"You look just like her," he said.

"I wish I had a picture," I told him honestly. He opened up his jacket and dug around for his walet. He bought it out along with a picture. He turned it over, grabbed a pen and wrote down an address.

"We were inseparable. Write to me if you want," he said. He gave me a small smile and left closing the door behind him. I thought he'd stay and talk more, obviously not. He didn't look like the type to be excited over a family reunion. I looked at the photo and then at Steve's. I needed to get away from here. I turned around to my phone and dialled a number I thought I'd never use from home.

"Hello?" a familiar voice answered.

"Howard, is that holiday still on the table?" I asked.

"Charlotte, I knew you'd come around," he said, the smirk evident in his voice. I grabbed my things again and left my apartment; the only new thing in my possession was the photo of Steve.
