Hello readers! I just want to clear something up: Kagome and Inuyasha are NOT having Shippou. I don't think I'll even include him in this fic. Happy reading!
Chapter 10: The Right Moment
Over the past week, Sango had been pulling double shifts at the hospital. And with Kagome's being sick early in the morning, Sango moved out for a few days to catch up on sleep. That was why she was pulling up to a wonderfully sized house in a luxury car. Her obvious choice was to stay with her boyfriend, who'd insisted that she take one of his cars to work instead of the bus or train. And while the woman didn't care for things, it was nice to get in the car and go as you please. She grabbed her purse from the passenger seat, locked the car, and made her way to the front door. "Hey Miroku," The young woman started as she kicked off her shoes by the front door. "Are you here?"
"Yes, my beautiful Sango I am!" He shouted lovingly from the top of the stairs. He was wearing a simple pair of black sweats, and one of his old college t-shirts as he made his way down the grand stairs to greet his girlfriend. Sango took one look at her boyfriend's lazy attire and spoke, "What did you do today?" she asked as she set her purse down on the entrance table. Miroku scratch the back of his head and stifled a yawn as he shoved the other hand in his pocket before answering. "I shadowed the old man today. He thinks I'm ready to take over the business buuuut, I like the half work days he gives me." He answered with a grin. Sango rolled her eyes at that. "Its time you let your dad retire. You know, spend your days on the beach type deal?"
"Pft, that man's got his own island. He'll be alright. Besides, I believe in my heart that he can do this until he's at least seventy." He joked. "How was the conference?"
Sango sighed at the topic that was heavy on her mind. "You'd never guess who I saw and where I saw them." His girlfriend started while she took her coat off. Miroku raised an eyebrow as he took her jacket to hang up in the closet by the entrance. "And who would that be?"
Sango took a breath before speaking. "The conference at Kageyama… I was heading up to the fourth floor. Inuyasha and Kagome were in the maternity wing!" She spluttered out. Miroku froze what he was doing, the jacket and hanger still in hand as he wore a look of shock and disbelief. "What? No way. Maybe you'd caught a glance of Sessh? He and Kaguya were probably doing a checkup for Rin." He reasoned.
"Uh-uh. It was them, Miroku. I saw them, but they didn't see me. I was sure Inuyasha would have known I was there, but he looked too distracted to pick up my scent." She deduced as they both made their way to the kitchen. "Has Inuyasha told you anything?" She asked as she rummaged through the fridge.
"Nope. Kagome?"
"Nope." Sango answered as she pursed her lips in thought. There's no way her best friend was pregnant and didn't even inform her. Especially when the person who'd done it was the man she so proclaimed she despised.
"Well, as much as I'd like to know what's going on, we should wait until they decide they want to tell us something. Maybe they're waiting for the right moment." Sango gave him a look as she took a sip from her water bottle.
"Sango," He said knowingly.
"Alright, alright fine. We'll wait for the right moment." She promised.
Meanwhile, Kagome was getting dropped off by Inuyasha at her apartment. She went by her mom's house earlier, after she'd gotten a text that said Souta had badly injured his leg playing soccer for school. They made their way over, and decided that was as good as a time as ever to tell them about the baby. She'd felt her stress build up as she kept this to herself for weeks now. That, however, was all washed away at the excitement in her families' eyes as they hugged and congratulated the two. Kagome had no doubt that they would be excited about the edition to the family, it was just the situation she was in with the father.
"I mean, sure it's not ideal. But it's not unheard of. If you're both are civil with each other, then things will be okay." Her mother had stated. The simple statement from her mother lingered with her as they pulled up to the apartment complex and Inuyasha turned the car off. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. When Kagome had asked him to take her to her families' shrine, he had no idea that she actually wanted him to go in with her. Sure, he'd met her mother once before and they had a good conversation, but he didn't want their second meeting to be them telling her that he'd impregnated her only daughter. As things worked out, though, the older woman was thrilled. Deep down, Inuyasha wondered if his mother would react the same way.
He and Kagome walked to her front door in silence and Kagome turned around to speak to the man. "Thank you, Inuyasha. I really appreciate it." Inuyasha looked at her for a moment, taken aback before responding. "No prob. If you need anything, just text me, ok?"
"Will do." She responded as she unlocked the door. Feeling drained from the days events, Kagome kicked off her shoes and made her way to the kitchen for a cup of tea. Her evening ritual of drinking a cup of tea had been working out, and making her mornings a lot easier. Twenty minutes later, she set her mug in the sink and headed straight to the bathroom for a nice hot bath. She had zero intention of doing anything else except taking a nice bath, and climbing right into her warm and comfortable bed. Kagome turned the knob on the tub, and started to run the water, unaware that a key had just unlocked her front door.
Screw the right moment.
Sango had said a few hours earlier that she'd wait until her best friend told her why she was where she was, but she couldn't do it. She left her boyfriend's house with the intention of picking up the pizza they'd ordered, but ended up making a bee line to the apartments. When she unlocked the front door, she heard the water running in the bathroom and knocked on the door. Kagome opened the door and was greeted at the site of her friend. "Hey Sango, are you here to grab some more clothes?" She asked. Kagome hadn't changed out of her clothes yet, but had let her hair down.
"No, I'm here for you." She began. Kagome gave her a puzzled look. "What?"
"Dammit Kagome. I saw you at Kageyama with Inuyasha!" The brown-haired woman blurted out. "Are you pregnant?" She finally asked. Kagome nodded her head yes before confirming out loud. "Yes. And I was gonna tell you, I was just waiting for the right moment." She'd confessed. Kagome didn't like to keep anything from her best friend, and didn't like this was how she was finding this out, either.
Sango couldn't hide the hurt on her features as what she thought to be was true. "Kagome, we've known each other for so long now, though it sucks you didn't tell me. I think its great news! So, have you told your mom? Souta? Does Inuyasha's family know? What ab-"
"Slow down!" Kagome giggled at the bombardment of questions. "I'll answer all of that right after I take a bath. Will you still be here?"
"Yeah just let me grab something. I'll be back in twenty!" Sango said as she grabbed her car keys and headed out the door.
Forty-five minutes later, Kagome and Sango were sitting in their living room, munching on the pizza Sango had picked up. A hungry Miroku texted her earlier and asked what was going on, and Sango had simply replied that she ordered another pizza for delivery to his house. Miroku didn't seem to like this response, saying he was both hungry and horny, and that he wanted to have sexy time with the pizza. Sango promised to make up for it as she set her phone down on the coffee table.
"Since college?!" Sango exclaimed as she gawked at the woman across from her. The women had begun talking as soon as Sango came back with the pizza. Now, they were both enjoying the magnificent pie, and were sharing a decent sized comforter on their sofa.
"Yep," Kagome started as she reached for another slice of the delicious pizza. "After that night, I thought it would be best that we stayed away from each other. But you started dating Miroku, and of course they're best friends. So, the four of us always ended up hanging out."
"Damn. That's super awkward." Sango admitted while wiping sauce off of her hands with a napkin. "Was it good, though?" She asked. Kagome bit her lip, already knowing what she was referring to. "What am I saying. It must've been if you guys have been going at it for this long now." Kagome laughed a little at that.
"Okay. Well if the sex was good, why were you guys constantly at each other's necks? The things I've heard you guys say to each other is flat out vicious."
Kagome set her plate down on the coffee table with a sigh before speaking. "I dunno, I guess I hated the part of myself for wanting him. He's rude, arrogant, and he has no filter. But sometimes he's not that bad of a guy. And those are the times I like him."
Sango considered her words for a moment while closing the empty pizza box. It was a surprise to hear about her friends' surreptitious rendezvous with Taisho of all people. But she was still happy for her nonetheless. The two talked for a while longer until they both realized how late it was. Sango had left all of her work items at Miroku's, so she headed back to his place after grabbing a few more things. The two said their goodbyes and Kagome could barely contain a yawn as she shuffled to her room. Turning off her light, she climbed under the blankets and immediately fell asleep with a little less weight on her shoulders.
The next day, Inuyasha had gotten up at the crack of daylight, after a night of tossing and turning. He showered, ate, and dressed in one of his hundreds of suits at the slowest possible rate. He had contemplated even coming in to work today, but he knew from passed experience that Sesshomaru would hold him accountable for lost time, which usually meant sacrificing his weekend. Their company was a shared partnership, but the older of the two was the one in charge, even if Inuyasha would never admit it.
"Mr. Taisho?" An older, articulate man spoke, clearing his throat. Inuyasha had been quiet the entire meeting staring out the window, and it wasn't escaping his coworkers, either. He had been thinking about Kagome again, which explained why he was so tired the next day in the staff meeting. Thatwoman was still on his mind. He knew things needed to change between them, and he was planning on doing the best he could to stay on her good side. He wanted things to work out for the best, but in what way? A co-parent? A friend? Or something more?
The older man standing next to the charts cleared his voice and tried again to get his bosses attention. "Mr. Taisho? Do you have anything for the group?" The hanyou looked at the man before quickly dismissing them. "No, you're all good. Thank you for attending," He stated as he closed the blank notes section of his tablet. Everyone stood up and exited the room, and started heading out to lunch. Inuyasha was the last to exit, and made his way to Sesshomaru's office.
He walked in, without even bothering knocking. "Hey Sessh, I'm going home after lunch, I'm too damn tired." He mumbled while undoing his tie. Sesshomaru didn't even cast the man a glance at his rude entrance. No one else would dare do what the hanyou was so used to doing multiple times a day. Inuyasha plopped a sit on the sofa and sighed. He then sighed again, a bit louder this time. The older Taisho brother sat quietly at his computer, typing away and ignoring the man. On the third loud, and unnecessarily loud sigh, though, Sesshomaru finally spoke up.
"What do you want?"
"How long did you wait before telling mom and dad that you were having Rin?"
"Why does it matter?"
"Just curious."
Sesshomaru continued typing and clicking away, looking as stoic as ever before responding. "We didn't tell them anything. Father could smell the difference in Kagura when we went over for dinner one night," He remembered. At this point, he'd stop typing and glanced out of the window for a few seconds. "That was about two weeks in, though."
"How'd they react?" Inuyasha prodded.
"Don't try to gauge their reaction from my experience. What's done is done." Sesshomaru answered without missing a beat. Inuyasha sighed at that, though not the exaggerative one he used earlier to annoy his older brother and get his attention. Sesshomaru was right. Inuyasha didn't know why, but he was a nervous to tell his parents about the baby. He'd come to his brother to seek counsel, a rare action considering he was hardly the conversationalist. After all, he and Kagura were the only ones who knew so far. Despite being confident and cocky, he was still the baby in the family, and sharing news at this level was something he'd never really thought of.
"Alright, well," Inuyasha began as he got up and stretched. "I'll see you later. Thank you Dr. Sesshomaru for you time. When can I schedule my next session with you?" He asked jokingly.
"Never. Now go home before I change my mind." He responded evenly while sending a text, most likely to his wife. Inuyasha waltzed out of the office, and straight to the elevator where he made his way down to his designated parking spot. Speaking to his brother gave the hanyou the confidence booster he didn't know he needed, as he made his way on an all too familiar route to the house he grew up in…
At the same time, Kagome was just coming back from lunch. The woman had a small bowl of soup and a sandwich from a café a few blocks down from her work. That was all she could stomach before deciding she had enough. Kagome caught the elevator and made her way up to the eighth floor, and just when she thought she had the elevator to herself, a very familiar wolf demon slipped in. Kouga ran his hand through his hair and sighed in relief at slipping through before the doors closed on him. Kagome glanced at her boss who smirked at the young woman.
"Hey Higurashi, how was lunch?"
"It was alright. I-"
"Wait," Kouga cut her off as he lifted one finger. He sniffed the air in curiosity. "There's something different about you," He began while narrowing his eyes. There was definitely something different smelling about the woman, he just couldn't place it. Kagome raised an eyebrow at the man who'd stared at her with an intensity that almost made her uncomfortable. The ding from the elevator was the saving Kagome was looking for as she walked out, wondering just what in the world that man was talking about.
Kagome made her way to her desk and set her things down when she simultaneously heard her friend and coworker speak.
"Oh my God, so you know the guy I went on a date with yesterday," Yuko began. "This guy was sexy as fuck, and I was thinking 'would it be wrong to sleep with him on the first date?''' Kagome raised her eyebrows at that, relating all too well, but kept quiet and let her friends speak. "And then when we were about to do the do, he asked me if I wanted a connection with someone or sex. He told me he wanted a connection and we should wait. So, I'm gonna spend more time with him this weekend!" She gleefully ended. Kagome furrowed her eyebrows at that in thought.
"Do you think if you guys would've slept together, you wouldn't've had a real connection later?" She ventured.
Yuko considered her words while pursing her lips. "I wouldn't say that. It's different for everyone. Sometimes, love comes later, y'know?"
"Aah, the wise words of Yuko." Kagome playfully added while logging back in to her computer.
"Why do you ask, my dearest Kagome? Could it be that you have scandalous stories you'd like to share?" Yuko half joked.
"Actually," She began while biting her lip. Yuko looked up and straightened her posture, wide eyed and ears open as she stared at her friend.
"No!" She said after a few seconds.
"Yeah…"
"With who? Oh, is it the boss man?"
"No!" She said as she contorted her face. She looked around, not wanting her business to be heard throughout the entire floor. "It's Taisho." She said quietly.
"The old man? Damn Kagome, isn't he married?"
"No, his son."
"Sesshomaru? He's married, too!"
"Woman! Not him either! Inuyasha, his youngest son." Kagome said finally. Yuko gave her a knowing look "Ooooh, him." She began as a smile crept on her face. "Kagome, that man is fine as hell. I saw some pictures of him online at the beach and he is chiseled out of the finest marble," She began dreamily. "How in the world do you know him, and does he have a friend?"
Kagome laughed a bit at her friends' reaction. "Well, I can't say for sure who his friends are, but I guess I've got plenty of time to find that out. A whole eighteen years' worth." Yuko let her words sink in, her mouth slightly agape as she looked at her friends' torso, then back up to her face.
"No," she asked in disbelief. Kagome shook her head yes and Yuko's face lit up. "You cannot be serious, you're having a baby with that beautiful man?!" She asked in excitement as she hugged the woman. "That's great! This all sounds so surreal. How far along are you? What does your family think?"
Kagome smiled at the reminder of how Sango had asked similar questions the night before. The two women chatted away, while being mindful of the work that had to be done. Before they knew it, it was time to head home, and Yuko offered her a ride home. The two said their goodbyes as Kagome made her way to the front door and turned the key. At that moment, her phone buzzed in her purse.
"Hello?"
"Hey Kagome. So, I told my parents about the baby," He announced proudly. "They wanted to know when they could meet you."
Kagome felt her body tense up at that before answering. "I'm not sure, maybe we could hold off on that?"
"This weekend it is!" He proclaimed.
"Taisho, you cannot be serious!"
Click.
Kagome stood and looked at the ended call on her phone. That man….
Well, this weekend was as good as a moment to meet them than ever….
