I searched the cafe for Grantaire or Eponine for answers to the letter that he gave me this afternoon. "E'llo m'lady, how are you this fine evening," Little Gavroche yelled while poking me in the rib gently to get my attention.
"Im wonderful Gavroche," I said while ruffling his overgrown messy hair. "You should come to my flat tomorrow so I can cut your hair. It is growing extremely long," I teased.
He ducked away from my hand. "But Chrissy longer hair shows character," he explained while trying to tame his knotted hair.
I leaned to his eye level "I'll throw in a basket of food," I whispered.
"Deal!" he said shaking my hand. He ran out of the cafe probably to his gang of children. I went to back to searching for Grantaire and Eponine.
"Christine what are you doing?" I hear Marius say right behind me.
I jump a little bit from the surprise. Why is Marius always around when I don't need him around! "Oh hello Marius," I said looking around the crowded for Eponine. "Have you seen Epo-"
"I was thinking that maybe tomorrow, because i'm assigned to escort you," He said shyly.
"Oh really," I said half paying attention.
"Yes, and I was thinking t-that week could make a day of it!" What was he talking about and where is Eponine. "We could go to park and maybe the cafe. Oh I also know this ama-"
"Of course," I say without thinking I can find out what he wants latter.
"Really! Oh Christine thats wonderful!," He said with excitement like a child discovering a new toy. I looked at Marius breaking my concentration on finding Eponine, he was grinning from ear to ear he kissed me on my cheek and ran over to the bar where Enjolras was waiting. As soon as Marius meet Enjolras, Enjolras patted him on back.
"You know you agreed to have an outing with Marius," I heard a annoyed voice behind me. Why is everyone sneaking up on me today! I turned around to see the slim Eponine looking at me with annoyance.
"Oh Eponine I have been looking for you everywhere!" I said.
"That's great, follow my lead and just shake your head yes or no if needed," She said barely listening to me. She grabbed my arm and hauled me over to where Marius, Enjolras, and the rest of the boys were standing over a table with plans on it. She walked right up to Enjolras "Youre little sis. doesn't feel so good," She said pointing her thumb to me. "You guys seem busy i'll take her home," She said with such ease like it was the truth.
Enjolras turned around looking at me. "You're not feeling well?" he questioned. I just nodded. "Well I guess she can take you," Eponine took that as a yes and started to walk away but Enjolras grabbed her arm. "Make sure she's safe," He whispered almost as a threat. She just rolled her eyes and walked out of the cafe with me in tow.
As we walked down the streets I became more and more curious on where we're going. "Where are we going?"
She stopped in front of a dinky cafe "Right here'" She said.
"Here?"
"Yes here," Grantaire said, coming from the cafe. "I told you we were going to have a cup of coffee," He explained, he took my and brought me to a table with two steaming cups of coffee and a few pastries. He sat next to me and smiled, but the mood was ruined by Eponine clearing her throat to get our attention. "Oh yes here Eponine," Grantaire took out a small bag of coins and handed it to her. "Thank you," he said.
"You better sweep her off her feet," she said and then her face dropped. "Before Marius dose," without anything else she walked away into the dark.
"What does Marius have to do with anything," Grantaire questioned with a hint of jealousy on his face.
"Its nothing he just wants to go on an outing tomorrow I guess, I really only see him as a brother," I reassured him. "Why are concerned?"
"Oh um nothing I just want to know if he is bugging you," he said. "Let's not let the coffee cold," he said.
"So how did you meet my brother?" I asked. We had just finished the coffee and pastries.
He got up from his chair and held out his hand. "I will on the way to our home, its getting late," I took his hand and he paid for treats and we headed down the cobble road. "I was in college for less than a year and I was in a bad place. My parents cut me off after I was arrested for..." he trailed off I looked up at him and he was looking down at him. "I was troubled back then Christine, damn I still am but I was worst in my teens, my parents thought it was a passing phase but I got worst. I did some stuff I'm not proud of and it landed me in jail," why was he telling me so much about his life, I barely know him, but inside I was touched he trusted me this way. "Well when I got out of jail I didn't have anywhere to go except school and even then I couldn't pay the debts so I started living with Joly my only friend at that time. I started drinking and it was a good escape at the time but i soon couldn't' stop cause it made me forget. To pay for my drinks and to pay rent I got a job at the cafe that the boys were planning the revolution. I had heard Joly ramble on about it before but I didn't really pay attention until I started working there. Thats when I saw your brother. He had a presence about him that was amazing and i soon started to listen to his speeches and before I knew it I joined. Thats when I went back to school and my parents thought I got better and they took me back," he ended his speech and looked down at me. "This is your stop," he joked.
I looked at our surroundings and in yes fact we were at my flat. "Oh um thank you for taking me home, and for the coffee," I said. I opened the door and luckily Enjolras wasn't there yet. Before I could into the flat Grantaire grabbed my hand gently.
His hands were tough but gentle and warm. "Maybe we can sneak out another time, I have this great idea that if you would just sneak through the cafe windo-" He said excitedly.
"Grantaire. I had the wonderful time tonight but, W-we can't go sneaking around like this. And even if we could i'm under lock and key now because of what happened," I explained. I did want do things with him but on the other hand I don't to see hurt by Enjolras. "Maybe its best that we-" I was about to explain that to him but all of a sudden there was a loud crash and a cat hissing loudly.
"DAMMIT!" I heard the unmistakable voice of Enjolras yell from downstairs. My stomach dropped at the sound of his footsteps coming up the stairs. I shoved Grantaire into the flat and up the stairs to my room.
"If you wanted me in your bed you could just ask," grantaire joked, but I could see in his eyes he was terrified.
I pushed him to the small window in my room, as I opened it I heard Enjolras open the front door. Grantaire climbed out the window and planted his feet on the narrow ledge. "Just jump grab that brick right there," Said pointing to a small brick that was out of place and sticking out of the wall below his feet. "And you be close enough to the street to land safely," He only nodded and leaned sat down to grab the stone. I closed the window and ran to my bed and closed my eyes to pretend I was asleep.
A few moments later Enjolras opened my door and I could hear him sigh and he quietly closed my door. That was close. Lets just hope Grantaire and I will never be in that situation again.
