Blanket of Stars

Snap.

The fire crackled as Sonic threw in a dry log to keep it from going out. He watched as it fell towards the central flame and caught fire, sending sparks flying high up into the dark night sky.

The gang had agreed to go on a stargazing excursion for the night, but no one had planned on it being this cold out. Luckily Knuckles had started up the fire for them, having lit several back when he was guardian of the Master Emerald.

He heard the sound of beating wings behind him as Rouge lowered herself to the ground, arms full of a blankets.

"All right kiddo's. Here's all I could hold." She screwed one up and threw it at Sonic's face, who despite being the fastest thing alive, still didn't manage to dodge the throw.

Sonic growled at her and Rouge just raised an eyebrow. "Just be glad I got them hedgehog." She stated as she sauntered away to fling the remaining blankets at the others.

He quickly scanned the area for the rest of his friends, mentally ticking off each one as he saw them. The only one missing was Amy. He vaguely remembered that she'd already gone up to look at the stars on the other side of the hill.

He grabbed a hold of his blanket and stood up to leave. There was no fire up there, and if Amy was there then she'd most likely be cold. He yelled a quick 'be right back' to Tails and turned to head up the hill he'd seen Amy go up earlier.

As Sonic made his way up, he heard the sounds of distant bickering behind him. His ears perked up and he picked up parts of the conversation as it floated past on the wind.

"I don't care if you don't have a blanket, it's not my fault you didn't get enough."

"Oh really. Well, watch me take it from you then Knucklehead."

"Hey - no. Stop that. GIVE IT BA-"

He glanced back and sniggered as he saw Rouge pounce on Knuckles and attempt to drag the blanket out from under him. He didn't have any doubts about who would win that particular brawl.

As he crested the hill, he saw her sitting on the far side of the hill. She had her back to him, but he could tell that her face was lifted up to the sky, both hands spread on the grass around her.

"You know," Sonic started slyly. "I've always found that particular star to be my favourite." He pointed upwards to the sky and Amy followed his line of sight.

She frowned lightly and turned to him, a soft smile tugging at her lips. "That's the moon Sonic."

Sonic shrugged passively, his smile growing. "Cold?"

Amy wrinkled her nose , considering the question. "A little, I guess."

"Well then, it looks like I have just to the thing for you. Sonic comes to the rescue once again." Sonic said, dangling the blanket at her. Amy reached out to grab it but Sonic moved it just out of her reach.

"One condition." He said slyly.

Amy raised her eyebrows at him. "Seriously Sonic?"

"Okay fine. If you don't want it I'm sure Knuckles would be..." He trailed off as he pretended to turn.

"Fine." Amy said, defeated. "What's the condition?"

Sonic gave her a triumphant grin. "You have to tell me what your favourite star is." He joined Amy on the ground as she looked up, searching the sky for the perfect answer.

He carefully draped the blanket over her shoulders, making sure that it covered her properly. Amy shifted to the side and lifted the side of the blanket closest to him, leaving just enough room beside her for Sonic to join her.

He slid over to her, taking care to avoid making too much contact with her. He wrapped the blanket around them tighter. The warmth of her body next to him was starkly contrasted by the chill of the night air.

Looking up, the twinkling stars blanketed the dark sky and Sonic wondered which one she would choose. He felt her move next to him and suddenly her arm popped up in front of him, pointing out to something in the distance. "That one." She said firmly.

Sonic followed the direction of her finger to a star burning brighter than the others around it. "The North star?"

He felt her nod next to him. "That's my favourite. It's helped so many people find their place in the world, and it'll help so many more yet." She took a deep breath, tugging the blanket closer to her.

Sonic looked over his shoulder at the pink hedgehog, his gaze softening. "Polaris huh." He turned back to look at it. It seemed to sparkle as his gaze locked onto it, considering Amy's words.

" I like that one too."

The struggle to start this fic off with 'snap, crackle, pop' was too real. The theme for today was 'blanket'. Sorry it's so short. I'm running out of time for this prompt and it's nearly tomorrow. Hopefully the next one will be better. Thanks for reading, drop me a review if you can.
