Zoe paced back and forth in George's office.
"Zoe relax." George told her. "Everything will be ok."
"You don't know what he's capable of, maybe we shouldn't have done this."
"Zoe, I do know what he's capable of, remember. And yes we should have done this because if he doesn't get stopped he will do it to someone else. That is not fair"
Zoe nodded. "I know but I'm just so scarred he's going to come find me before there is even a court date."
"You will be fully protected here and you know that. You think Wade would let anything happen to you?"
"Why does everyone keep just saying Wade?" she rolled her eyes
"Because Wade has never been like this about anyone but I'm just kidding. We are all here for you. I sent over all your x-rays from Brick and his report to my buddy in NY so he can start the process for the restraining order and the charges."
"Thank you for this and I really wish you would let me pay you."
"No, not for this."
"Thank you."
"Lunch?" he asked
"Yes please."
"When do you start at the office?"
"Tomorrow, Brick wanted me to get all this out of the way first."
"That's good. I really wish you would tell the town who you really are."
"I might, I do love it here and I was thinking it also might make it harder for him to find me if I do everything under Zoe Wilkes here."
"That is a great idea Zoe, I actually highly suggest that."
"Ok" she nodded hesitantly. "You really think the town will be ok?"
"Yes, I really do. I just have to talk Dash into not posting about this in the Blawker. You want me to go talk to him now?"
"I didn't even think about that. Yeah, you think you could?"
"Of course. How do you think you will announce your return?"
Zoe sighed. "I'm not really sure, should I just start doctoring and then they all find out when they ask my name. I mean, they know my name is Zoe, but like my last name?"
George thought. "No, I think it should be a public thing because if you do it the office, once one person knows, the whole town will want a checkup."
"Ah, ok yeah I don't want to do that."
Suddenly there was a knock on the door and Zoe jumped.
"Relax Zoe." George put his hand on shoulder and went to open the door. "Hey Wade."
Zoe sighed with relief and smiled at her friend. "Hey."
"You ok?" he asked seeing the worry in her eyes. She nodded and started chewing on her bottom lip. "What's wrong?"
She smiled at how well he already knew her. "I'm just nervous, George put all the paperwork through and now I just have to wait for him to show up here. And I also have to tell the town who I am."
Wade walked closer to her and put his hands on her hips. "Zoe, I will never let anything happen to you, I promise, you do not have to worry about a thing." He kissed her forehead and Zoe immediately relaxed. George smiled watching the interaction in front of him. Never once has he seen Wade act like this in front or towards a woman and he was very impressed. "Now, what's this about telling the town?"
"I want to tell everyone. George and I agree it might help my cover if I use Wilkes as my last name."
"Oh I agree, that is definitely a good idea. How?"
"That is where I'm stuck. Any ideas?"
Wade shrugged. "Just tell them. Come on down to the Rammer Jammer tonight for dinner, everyone will be there and just tell them. It's not like they don't all like you already."
Zoe nodded. "Ok, yeah I guess that can work."
That night Zoe walked into the Rammer Jammer right as the dinner rush started. She spotted Wade at the bar and took a seat.
"Red or white?" he asked with a smile
"White." She smiled back
"You ready for this?" he asked as he poured more than the usual amount into a glass.
Zoe took a deep breath. "After this glass."
Lavon and Lemon walked in about ten minutes later and walked right up to Zoe.
"You do it yet?" Lavon asked
"No." she finished off the wine. "But now I'm ready." She smiled at Lavon and Lemon and then over at Wade who was a few feet down the bar. Wade caught her eye and walked towards her.
"Ready?" he asked and she just nodded. "Go on Girl." He winked at her and she blushed with a giggle.
"What do I say?"
Lemon thought. "Uh, hi I'm Zoe Wilkes?"
Zoe just looked at her. "That's it? I thought you were better at words than that?"
"Just tell them the truth Big Z. That you only found out a couple months ago who you really are and that you would like everyone else to know."
She nodded and stood up from the bar stool. "Hey everyone." She started and no one really heard her.
"Hey." Wade yelled and got everyone attention. Everyone stopped talking and looked towards the bar.
Zoe waved uncomfortably. "Thank you." She mouthed to Wade and looked back at the crowd in front of her. "Hi, I know a lot of you have seen me around town. I've talked to probably all of you, told you a little bit about myself but there is something I never mentioned. Uh, well apparently I only found out a couple months ago that Harley, Dr. Wilkes is my father." She took a breath and the crowd looked at her in shock. "I know that this might be a little shocking, I know it was for me." She laughed nervously "But I wanted you all to know because I have decided to move back here and learn about the town that I was robbed of living in so long ago. I hope that you all are ok with that and I would love to get to know you all more." She nodded, happy with her little speech. "So, yeah, you can go back to your dinner now." She sat back down on the stool and Lemon hugged her.
"That was great. And I think you are the first person ever to make Bluebell speechless." She commented
"Is that a good thing?" Zoe asked and Lemon just shrugged.
The four of them finally took a good look around the bar. Some people were whispering, some still just staring at Zoe and more than a handful were actually wiping tears from their face.
Dash stood up and looked around at the townspeople. "On behalf of the entire town of Bluebell, I would like to say, Welcome Home Zoe." He smiled at her and tipped his hat. "It is wonderful to see what a beautiful young woman you have turned out to be."
Zoe smiled over at him. "Thank you."
The whole restaurant started clapping and everyone started yelling "Welcome Back." Zoe couldn't stop the tears that have been threating to escape her eyes for the past few minutes.
Sheriff Bill walked up to her. "It is wonderful to see you Zoe. I'm shocked no one figured this out beforehand. Welcome back." He gave her a hug. "And don't worry about anything else." He whispered in her ear. I talked to George earlier, you are safe here."
"Thank you, I hope so."
He just nodded at her and returned to his seat.
The rest of the evening was very hectic for Zoe. Everyone started coming up to her after Sheriff Bill asking her questions and in return for her answers, she got a different story about Harley. She felt so at home, hearing stories about her real Dad, listening to the townspeople tell her how happy they were to see her again and how beautiful she was. She has never felt this at ease in her entire life and she knew, no matter what happened in the next few weeks, she would be just fine.
A few days later Zoe was at the practice when someone she hasn't seen before walked through the door. He was tall, dark hair and scruffy with dark sunglasses. He didn't look like a typical Bluebellian.
"Zoe?" he asked
She smiled at the man. "Yes, how can I help you?"
"Um, I've been having these severe ear aches lately, I was hoping you could take a look."
"Sure, come on in to the exam room." She led him in. "So when did the aches start?"
"Maybe a day or so ago." He shrugged. Zoe went to work, checking him over, looking in his ears, his throat and taking his temperature. "So you moved here from New York?" he asked.
"Yeah, a couple months ago." She answered the all too familiar question she's gotten from everyone in this town.
"That's a big move, city to country. Must be quite an adjustment."
"You would think so, but it's really not. I never felt much at home in the big city, ya know? And when I found out about my Dad and that I actually lived here for a couple years before the city it finally all made sense. Once I got here, it just felt like home." She answered. She feels like she's been saying the same explanation so many times she doesn't even have to think about it anymore.
"That's very interesting." He nodded
"You don't have a fever and your ears and throat are clear. Do you grind your teeth in your sleep?" she asked
He thought. "Ya know, I think I do. Would that cause ear pain?"
"It would. I would suggest a mouth guard at night. Other than that, you seem very healthy."
"Well thank you Doctor. I appreciate you taking the time to check me over."
"You are welcome, uh actually I don't think I got your name."
"It's Paul." He smiled at her and went to walk out the door. "Have a nice day." He slipped his sunglasses back over his eyes and left.
Zoe started cleaning up the room when Brick walked in. "Who was that?" he asked
Zoe shrugged. "Said his name was Paul."
"Paul. Oh ok." He smiled and walked out of the room.
Zoe didn't think much of it and continued to clean. Brick walked outside and took his phone out of his pocket. He found Lavon in his contacts and tapped his number.
"Hey Brick." Lavon answered
"Hey Lavon, there was a mysterious guy at the practice just now. Zoe treated him, said his name was Paul. I have never seen him in this town before."
"Aww naw, naw, naaawww. You don't think?" he asked hesitantly
"I don't know, he knew her name though. Was asking her about being here."
Lavon sighed deeply. "Alright, is he still there? What's he look like."
"No, he left. But tall, dark hair, scruff and dark sunglasses. Was wearing black jeans and black t shirt."
Lavon jotted the information down. "I'll let George and Wade know. You really never seen him before?"
"Sadly, no."
Down around the other side of the road Paul was on his phone as well. "Yeah, I found her. Bluebird or Bluebell, Alabama. Real small town, easy to navigate. Said something about her dad living here and her being here as a child. Yeah I'll stick around a little while longer, see if I can find where she's living. No, no one else saw me. Ok, yeah. Give you a call back when I know more." He hung up and walked to a black car, getting in and driving off.
Lavon walked over to Wades and lucky for him George was already there. "We have a problem."
"What's wrong?" Wade asked and handed him a beer abut Lavon declined. "Uh oh."
"Yeah, Brick just called. Mysterious man just left the practice, tall, dark hair, scruff, dressed all in black. Saw Zoe, was asking her questions about being here and knew her name. Said his name was Paul."
"Oh crap." Wade said down and put his head in his hands. He looked back at Lavon. "You don't think?" he started and then looked at George who was on his phone and typing away. "Tucker?"
"Hold on." He said holding up his finger.
"No." Wade yelled jumping up from his chair. "What is going on, do you know this guy?"
George only nodded until he found what he was looking for. "Paul Jenkins." He showed the guys a picture. "He was one of Julian's witnesses in his trial. He's a private investigator."
Wade kicked the chair and started cursing. "I have to go get her." He went to walk off.
"Wade hold on, we can't scare her. Did Brick say anything else?"
"No, that's it, let me call him back. Can you send him that photo?"
"Yeah." George did just that as Lavon called.
"Hey Brick, George is sending you a photo, let me know if that's the guy."
"Ok, here it is." Brick took the phone off his ear and opened the message from George. He sighed and shook his head. He put the phone back to his ear. "Yeah, that's him, for sure. Who is he?"
Lavon nodded to the guys letting them know it was him. "George said private investigator and friend of Julian."
"Shit." Brick said. "What now?"
"Uh, what now George?"
"What now is we get Zoe the hell out of here." Wade spoke up again.
"That might not be a bad idea but where can we take her and not spoke her?"
"My families hunting cabin outside Loxely?" he suggested
"You think you can get her to go?"
"I think so." He nodded. "But we have to go now. Nothing can happen to her."
"Ok Wade, you go start packing and Brick, you keep an eye on her until Wade gets there."
"Of course." Brick agreed. "We got this boys, don't worry."
Lavon nodded. "Yeah, ok I'll talk to you in a bit."
They hung up and Brick went back in the office and found Zoe sitting at her father's desk reading his files. "They were like books." He laughed entering the room.
"They are." She smiled looking down at the one she was reading.
"Who ya got?" he leaned over reading the name on the side.
"Wade." She laughed. "He was quite the daredevil growing up."
"That he was, especially after his Mama passed away. I think he would do those things as an excuse to come in and see Harley. He really looked up to him."
Zoe smiled. "That's really sweet but dangerous."
"Well that describes Wade to a T."
Zoe thought. "I guess, I haven't seen the dangerous side."
"He's been pretty tame since you got here." Brick thought. "Ya know, you have really jumped right into work these past few weeks. Why don't you take this weekend off?" he suggested
"No I couldn't. I just started, I can't have time off. I haven't been working long enough to earn any time." She protested
"Zoe, this is Bluebell, not New York. We don't worry about sick time and vacation time. If you're sick, you're sick, no penalties and vacation, well once football season starts I take a lot of time off so we don't really have vacation days." He told her. "You take off when you want." He laughed. "We're pretty lax in that department."
Zoe laughed. "I think I can get used to that."
Brick smiled. "Just not during football season." He warned her.
"You got it." She laughed again. "The weekend off might be nice. I'd like to see more of Bluebell, maybe go shopping or something."
Just then Wade walked into the office. "Hey Brick, Doc. How's it going?"
"It's going well." Brick started. "I just told Zoe to take the weekend off."
"Oh yeah? That's fun. Whatcha gonna do with your time?"
Zoe shrugged. "I don't know, something fun but relaxing."
"Well, if you want fun and relaxing I know just the place."
Zoe got excited. "What?"
"The Kinsella Family cabin."
"A cabin?" she asked a little disappointed
"Yeah, it's awesome. It's right on a lake, we have a boat, there is a cute little town right near it with little shops and an adorable little ice cream shop." He was trying to paint the perfect picture for her so she'd agree. "My Mama used to call it her little slice of heaven. Something you see in one of those romantic Hallmark movies."
That last line did it and Zoe's eyes lit up. "I'm in. When can I go?"
"How about now? I was actually thinking about going up there this weekend anyway. Haven't been in while, should check on it."
"That sounds amazing actually. You wouldn't mind me tagging along?"
"No way, should be fun."
Zoe looked at Brick. "Can I be done now?" she asked like a little kid.
Brick laughed. "Go, have fun, relax."
"Yay." She jumped up from the desk and walked past them grabbing her purse. "I need to pack."
"I'll bring you to your place and then well hit the road." Wade told her and looked back at Brick. He winked and gave him a small nod, Brick returned the gesture.
