Chapter 9: Feelings Hanging For The Cards! Rigged Lightning Deathmatch!

The doorway at the end of the grey hallway streams harsh white light. Two guards are escorting Yusei down this hallway, through this door and out onto a railed catwalk. The higher stories of the central area, connected by walkways that crisscross through the wide-open center. Yusei isn't struggling, but doesn't look too happy, each guard has a tight grip on one of his arms. The three stop walking and look around. "Starting today, this is where you'll live."

The other prisoners indeed look mean, glaring sourly over railings as they eye this newcomer. One of the guards shoves Yusei forward and he stumbles out onto the walkway, alone, while on the walkways above, dozens of tough-looking inmates watch him pass.

Above all of them, Takasu is watching the scene play out. "He's here. Ehehhahahahahahahah!" Takasu says, tauntingly.

Yusei glares back at him.

A short time later, a cell door opens and Yusei walks inside before the guards can shove him. "Get in. This is your room." The other guard guffaws and the door slams.

"So, they put you in here." Yusei is being addressed by his new roommate, a young man with purple hair. He has a small tracking dye mark under his left eye. "That makes me happy. You can take the top bunk, even though new people are normally supposed to take the lower bunk. Things like that don't bother me."

Yusei ignores him and climbs to the top bunk. "Hey you…" Yusei lies on his back and stares at the ceiling. "Sheesh."

Yusei isn't listening, he's lost in thought.

Flashback. Stardust Dragon, Red Dragon Archfiend and Cynder the Black Dragon are tiny compared to the massive sparkling red Crimson Dragon, crackling with blue sparks, wreathed in white-yellow light. It raises its shimmering head and emits a strange, musical cry. The Crimson Dragon spreads its wings over the Duel Stadium, shining brighter and brighter, like a star, and then evaporates, leaving a rain of glittering red mist. Down on the dark, dusty track, Yusei looks at his bare right arm, sleeve rolled up, at the red mark shining on his skin.

The flashback changes. Yanagi leans toward Yusei's ear. "Are you a Signer?" Asks Yanagi, trembling, with suppressed excitement. "Signer?" Yusei asks. "According to the legend of the people of the stars, the Crimson Dragon is their god. The people who summon it have the mark of the dragon and are known as Signers." Says Yanagi. Yusei is silent.

The flashback changes. "I just wanted to talk about the relationship between Neo Domino City and Satellite. I'm willing to sacrifice one side to ensure the survival of the other." Godwin says. The flashback ends.

Back to the present. Yusei continues to stare at the ceiling, trying to gather his thoughts.

His new roommate climbs up and stands over him. "Hey you." "What is it?" Asks Yusei. "You're incredible. You beat Himuro. My name is Kohei Aoyama. Nice to meet you. I also watched that duel. Your name is Yusei, right?" "Sorry, but can you be quiet?" Yusei asks. Aoyama is a bit disappointed at being rebuffed, but wants to be considerate. "I see." Says Aoyama.

"Psst! Sonny."

Aoyama turns.

Yanagi's on the other side of the bars. "Sonny." Yanagi says.

Yusei sits up. "Grandpa." Says Yusei, surprised.

He and Yanagi soon meet up with Himuro on one of the walkways. "Himuro…" Yusei says. "Yusei, you were also transferred here?" Asks Himuro. "Why is this happening to me? This area is for long-term detainees. I was supposed to be transferred to community service so that I can leave here quickly." Yanagi says. "Same with me." Says Himuro. "Sonny, do you have any idea why?" Yanagi asks. "We really can't escape from here?" Asks Yusei. "Yeah. Since we were transferred here, we're guaranteed to be stuck here for at least half a year. If you make any mistakes, it'll be longer." Himuro says.

"I must leave here because there are things I need to do." Says Yusei. "So does everyone else. Anyway, now that we're here, be careful about Chief Takasu. It's rumored that he wields his authority to do whatever he wants." Himuro says.

In an office somewhere in the detention center, Takasu is in a particularly bad mood.

Flashback. "He's a Signer?" Asks Takasu. He, Godwin and Sakiko are in an office somewhere. Godwin's standing by the desk, his back turned. Sakiko is leaning against the wall at Godwin's shoulder, her arms folded across her chest and her right leg is crossed in front of her left, with Onyx sitting down at her side. Takasu's clearly agitated. "You heard rumors about the Crimson Dragon." Godwin says. He turns halfway. "He's a candidate." Says Godwin. "But in our examination, he had no mark." Takasu says. Godwin turns all the way toward him and looks straight at him. "Chief, I did not come here to hear your opinions. Make sure you keep your eye on him. In the meantime…" Says Godwin. He turns to Sakiko. "Sakiko, you will remain here and continue to observe." Godwin says. "Very well, Sir." Says Sakiko. "But, Director. With all due respect, this is no place for a woman." Takasu says. "Chief, I wasn't lying when I said that Sakiko was my most trusted. And, not only can she defend herself. She has a very loyal protector in her dog. However, if anything should happen to Sakiko while here, I'm holding you personally responsible and you'll be fired on the spot. Have I made myself clear?" Asks Godwin, firmly. "Yes, Sir." Takasu says. The flashback ends.

Back to the present. Takasu's attitude toward Yusei hasn't improved and now he has a nasty plan. "Impossible! It's not allowed to be true! That garbage from Satellite must not be a Signer! I'll teach him that garbage will always be garbage!" Says Takasu.

A bright full moon can be seen above Neo Domino City. The detention center complex actually looks small beside the massive skyscrapers that surround it. The detention center is built such that the streets and sidewalks above double as its surrounding walls. Piercing searchlights on the exterior of the detention center building light up, forbidding escape.

In Yusei and Aoyama's cell, it's dark. Yusei's lounging on the top bunk and Aoyama is standing on the floor. "Do you want to escape? There's no one here who doesn't want to escape. When they brought you here, I bet they told you that you could leave soon. However, that's a lie." Aoyama says. As he speaks, another view of the spotlighted exterior of the building, then the view straight up through the center, with crossing walkways creating alternate triangles. "They keep outsiders who come to Neo Domino City here in order to set an example." Says Aoyama, in voice-over.

Back to the cell, as he continues. "I was also supposed to leave here quickly, but it's already been a year. If you want to escape, want to come with me?" Aoyama asks, bitterly. He lifts the mattress on his bunk and reveals a hole through it, an escape tunnel. "It took half a year. Do you want to see what's up ahead?" Asks Aoyama.

Outside the detention center's main building, on its skylighted rooftop. Aoyama is leading Yusei around a corner and they gaze up at the night sky. "Look. From that opening, we can reach the upper portions of Neo Domino City." Aoyama says. "But, how?" Asks Yusei. "Hm! My friends will come to rescue me tomorrow night." Aoyama says. Yusei points to his own cheek marker. "But, what about this? If we leave the detention center, it'll begin transmitting immediately." Says Yusei. "No problem! My friends will jam the security system via the internet. The marker won't transmit for one hour. It's a method that can only be used once. If they discover the jamming, the system will be changed to something new, and that hole might also be discovered." Aoyama says. "I have one request." Says Yusei. "Huh?" Aoyama asks. "I want to include two more people in this plan." Says Yusei. "Himuro and that grandpa?" Aoyama asks. Yusei nods. "Hm." Says Yusei. Aoyama sighs. "Fine. Anyway, if we don't escape between eight and nine o'clock, we won't have a second chance. Got it?" Aoyama asks.

Jack is zooming around the track at his estate, sleeve rolled up so he can see his sign. "Why won't it appear?" Jack thinks to himself.

Flashback. The same moment Yusei was thinking of is also on Jack's mind. The flashback ends.

Back to the present. Jack is still watching his arm out of the corner of his eye. "In order to make the Crimson Dragon appear, it seems I must duel him again." Jack thinks to himself. The sun is rising over Neo Domino City, as he keeps on riding.

Takasu enters Himuro's cell, where he's sitting alone on the bottom bunk. "What do you want?" Asks Himuro. "I've received information that you're hiding weapons." Takasu says. "Weapons? I don't have any. Go ahead and search my room." Says Himuro. Beat. Takasu smiles. "That's not necessary." Takasu says. He reaches under Himuro's vest and pulls out a pocket knife. "See? I found one." Says Takasu. Himuro gasps, shocked, and moves to rush him. "How dare you!" Himuro says.

Two guards instantly rush in and pin Himuro's arms behind his back.

Himuro soon finds himself slammed down onto an interrogation table, being held down by two guards, while Takasu stands across from him. "What did that new arrival tell you?" Asks Takasu. "What do you mean? Besides, I never sell out my friends." Himuro says. Takasu has a suspicious grin on his face. "That garbage from Satellite is your friend? The former pro duelist has fallen far." Says Takasu. He grabs Himuro by his jaw, roughly, and lifts him up by it, causing him to yell out, in pain.

His screams of pain and the sounds of him getting beaten can be heard throughout the detention center. Frightened inmates crowd their barred windows from their respective rooms, curious of who's getting the brutal beatings.

Yanagi is far from the windows and cowering on the floor against the wall, his hands over his ears.

Yusei's listening, in bewilderment.

Even Sakiko has stopped walking, having heard all the screams and sounds of beatings, with Onyx stopping to stand at her side, he can hear it just as she can, and starts to growl, deeply.

Some time later, the guards dump Himuro on the walkway, thoroughly beat up.

The other prisoners are all shocked and dismayed at the sight of Himuro, as all they can do is watch from their barred windows.

"Himuro!" Yanagi says.

"Himuro…" Says Yusei.

Sakiko is standing on a walkway high above them, watching. Onyx is standing at Sakiko's side.

"Himuro committed a huge crime! Everyone here will be held responsible! Your free time is revoked for an entire year! No one is allowed to leave their cells!" Takasu says.

"Wait!" "That's the same as being in solitary!" "That's right!"

"Be quiet! Garbage like you has no right to complain! You're all worthless to society!" Says Takasu.

"Huh...!" Yusei says.

Takasu's standing over Himuro on the walkway, addressing the prisoners in their cells. "You do not have the right for freedom! Just continue to live pathetically in the shadows for eternity! If you have any complaints, then speak up! If you do, you'll end up the same way as him! Ehehahahahah…" Says Takasu.

"Wait!" Yusei says.

"Huh?" Asks Takasu.

"No one in the world is worthless." Yusei says.

"Hahahahahahahah! My, my. The garbage from Satellite thinks he's a hero?" Asks Takasu.

"Himuro is innocent. He's a real duelist. He wouldn't conspire to do anything." Yusei says. "Huagh! You're saying that even though you know that I'm also a duelist? You're saying he's real, but I'm fake?" Asks Takasu.

Yusei's silent.

Takasu's smile gloats that Yusei just made his day. "Fine. Let's settle things in a duel in front of everyone! If you win, I'll ignore Himuro's crime, and I promise not to take away everyone's free time. However, if I win…" Himuro says.

"I'll do whatever you want for the rest of my life." Says Yusei. "Huh?" Aoyama asks.

Complete silence for a moment, except for gasps of awe and surprise from the windows of the surrounding cells as they realize what Yusei just said.

Sakiko's dark crimson-red eyes seem to widen a bit at Yusei's words, she seems just as shocked by this turn of events, even though her expression can't be seen from behind her mask. "Yusei…" Says Sakiko, softly.

"Interesting. The duel will take place tonight at eight-thirty. Understand?" Takasu asks.

"Fine." Says Yusei. "Hey, how can you say that when he's…" Aoyama says.

"Stop! Please stop!" Says Yanagi, yelling. Outside on the catwalk, the guards are dragging him forward. One of them speaks. "Keep coming!" "Heheheh." Takasu laughs. "I found one!" "Yaah!" Yanagi says, shouting. They pull his cards out of his socks, cuffs, linings and vest. "And here." "Wait! Those are my treasures! Give them back! Please!" Says Yanagi. Takasu swings his arm and hits him with enough force to send him crashing into the floor. "Hmhmhmhm!" Takasu laughs. Takasu lifts up the deck and shows it to his audience. "I'm confiscating this deck." Takasu says.

"Takasu!" Says Sakiko.

"Huh?" Takasu asks. He looks up, seeing Sakiko standing on a walkway high above from him, with Onyx standing right beside her. "This is a detention center matter, Miss Kuro. It doesn't concern you." Says Takasu.

"Oh, so being absolutely despicable to these men is a detention center matter, is it?" Sakiko asks, tauntingly.

Takasu growls under his breath. "I'm in charge of the detention center, I'll run it any way I want! I don't take orders from someone like you!" Says Takasu, nastily.

Even through he's nowhere near him, Onyx snarls and bares his teeth. "'You don't take orders from someone like me?' So, to put it simply, you don't take orders from women, is that it? You think women are beneath someone like you. Well, I have to say that I pity the woman who gave birth to someone like you." Sakiko says, condescendingly.

"Don't you dare bring my ma into this!" Says Takasu.

"Oh, did I just strike a nerve? Well, I'm just going to keep on pushing it. True, you may not take orders from me. However, you do take orders from someone and that someone just so happens to be the same person that I take my orders from. And unlike you, I follow through with my orders. Now, as you are aware, I was sent here from the director for a reason and I intend to follow through with my instructions, Takasu." Sakiko says, firmly and authoritatively.

"And what exactly did the director send you here to do? 'Cause the sooner your task here is complete, the sooner I'll be rid of you." Says Takasu, impatiently.

"It is quite simple really. The director sent me here to ensure that the detention center was being ran efficiently." Sakiko says.

Takasu groans.

"Now, we both know that you do not run this place the way you are supposed to. The warden of the detention center is supposed to treat the men here, not entirely as prisoners, but as individuals. Everyone here has seen firsthand how you really control this place, Takasu. You call yourself the Chief of the detention center. Well, you know what you really are?" Asks Sakiko.

Takasu glares up at her, his teeth and fists clenched.

"You are nothing more than an arrogant, insignificant tyrant. You are horrible to these men because of, not just for what they have done, but for their upbringing. Yes, some of them have committed some unmentionable crimes that label them as criminals. And yes, some of them did come from the Satellite. However, the way you treat them just makes it worse for everyone here." Sakiko says. She lifts up her left arm and gestures to the little device sewed into her glove. "Honestly, all it takes is one little tap to this communicator and it shall connect me straight to the director himself. However, I'm willing to put my report to him on hold for now and allow your duel with Mr Fudo to commence. I believe he has what it takes to put you in your place, Takasu." Says Sakiko.

Takasu smirks. "We'll just see about that, Miss Kuro." Takasu says.

"Yes, we shall." Says Sakiko.

"Listen, this'll be your final free time! Spend it well so that you have no regrets!" Takasu says. He turns and leaves, the prisoners are reacting in disgust and despair as he leaves.

"Yusei, why did you do that? We're supposed to escape tonight!" Says Aoyama. Yusei's still looking out the window at his friends, persecuted and miserable on the walkway outside. "I know." Yusei says.

As soon as the doors unlock, Yusei runs down the walkway as the guards drag Yanagi and Himuro back to their cell, dump them on the ground and then leave.

Yusei runs in and kneels down to see if they're okay. "Himuro." Says Yusei. Himuro turns his head to glare. "Yusei." Himuro says. "Are you okay?" Asks Yusei. "Sorta. Yusei, I'm sorry. They also took my deck." Himuro says. Yusei gasps. Yanagi sits on the lower bunk. "Oh no! They took my deck." Says Yanagi.

A few other inmates dash in. "Himuro, are you okay?" "Himuro!"

Yusei walks out of the cell. Aoyama is waiting for Yusei, leaning against the wall outside the door. "Understand? This is how the chief does things. He never intended to have a fair duel from the beginning. You fell for his taunts. Himuro and grandpa's decks were confiscated. Without a deck, you have no chance." Aoyama says. Yusei doesn't reply. "Let's escape, just the two of us. In their current state, those two won't be able to make it." Says Aoyama. "I can't do that." Yusei says. "Why not? You don't owe these people anything." Says Aoyama, pleading. "Since we dueled, we're now friends. If I leave my friends behind, I'll never truly be free." Yusei says. "Rrrgh. Stop acting tough when you have no deck." Says Aoyama. He turns and practically runs away. "Do whatever you want! Sheesh!" Aoyama says.

"You said your name was Yusei?" Yusei turns around, some of the other inmates are addressing him. "You were quite the showoff." "Come with us for a minute."

They gather on one of the walkways, Yusei is surrounded by over twenty toughs. This does not look good.

The clock-digital-hits 8:30 pm. Yusei's cell door unlocks. Yusei stands ready inside, the challenger. "Come out!" Yusei walks over to the guards. "Yusei!" Says Aoyama. "Don't mind me." Yusei says. One of the guards prods him along.

Several walkways converge on one level in a central space shaped like a hexagon, large enough to be a duel arena. Takasu is waiting and the inmates all crane their necks through the shutters of their cells, as the guards escort Yusei into the arena. "Hero of Satellite, you need a deck to duel. You did bring one, right? If you don't have one, then I win this duel by forfeit!" Says Takasu. The guards reach for Yusei.

Aoyama, Himuro and Yanagi are tense.

"I have a deck." Yusei says. He shows it.

"Impossible! From where?" Asks Takasu.

"You'll never understand how much a duelist cares for a single card." Yusei says.

Flashback. The prisoners who came to see Himuro address Yusei. "Come with us for a minute."

Change flashback. About twenty toughs stand on a walkway, surrounding Yusei. Several of them speak in turn. "A duelist always keeps his most special card with him." He reaches into an inner jacket pocket. "I want you to have this. If you didn't oppose him, we would've continued to feel pathetic forever."

Someone had turned over a picture frame to remove a card taped to the back.

"You can do it!"

Another guy pulls a card out of his dreadlocks and hands it to Yusei. "Defeat him."

People had hidden cards taped to books in bookshelves and under mattresses.

"Please, beat him with this!" "I'll carry your emotions with me." Says Yusei. He shows them a full deck of cards. Everyone cheers. The flashback ends.

Back to the present. "Rrgh. Well, fine. If you have a deck, then I'll just have to squash you in a duel." Takasu says. He points at the guards who brought Yusei. "You guys! Hurry up and prepare the duel disks!" Says Takasu.

They are each equipped with a duel disk attached to a chain bolted to the floor.

"What's this chain?" Yusei asks.

"It's just for a little show. Only the survivor gets to take off this duel disk." Says Takasu.

"Only the survivor?" Yusei asks.

"You'll understand soon enough. And just to make things a little more interesting." Says Takasu. He points towards two other guards, both of them holding down one of Sakiko's arms.

"No, Sakiko! Tell your guards to release her, she has nothing to do with this." Yusei says.

"Sure she does, she's the one who brought herself into this. She showed you the slightest bit of sympathy, compassion for some garbage from Satellite. And that's something I can't just overlook." Says Takasu.

"Yusei, don't worry about me. Just focus on winning this duel and beating Takasu more worthless than he already is." Sakiko says.

"Okay." Says Yusei.

Takasu slots his deck.

Yusei follows suit, his expression grim and purposeful.

"Duel!" Both Takasu and Yusei say. Yusei and Takasu both start with 4000 life points each. The holographic projectors start to light up.

"I refuse to believe that a garbage from Satellite is a Signer." Takasu thinks to himself.

"My turn. I summon Great Phantom Thief in defense position." Says Yusei.

Great Phantom Thief has 1000 defense points and is a Level 3 monster.

The inmates are cheering and a guy in a blue jacket, with a mark like Aoyama's cheers out… "Hey look! That's my card!"

"I end my turn." Yusei says.

"Be careful. Even though everyone put their emotions into that deck, it's still a random deck without strategy or theory." Says Himuro. "But, Sonny can do it!" Yanagi says.

"It's my turn. I draw! I summon Iron Chain Repairman!" Says Takasu.

Iron Chain Repairman has 1600 attack points and is a Level 4 monster. "Iron Chain Repairman attacks your monster!" Takasu says.

Yusei braces.

"Go, Iron Chain Repairman!" Says Takasu.

Repairman attacks and destroys Great Phantom Thief.

Guy in the blue jacket again. "My card…"

"At this moment, Iron Chain Repairman's monster effect activates! When it destroys a monster in battle, you take three-hundred points of damage!" Takasu says. He smiles, cunningly, he knows something that Yusei doesn't. "Prepare yourself, garbage hero." Says Takasu.

"What?" Yusei asks. He starts to feel something and looks at the chain connected to his duel disk, before he knows what's hit him, he's crackling and sizzling with electricity. "Ugghh... hggh-aaaaaagggh-aaaaaahhhhh!"

"Yusei!" Himuro says.

"Yusei!" Says Aoyama.

"Yusei!" Sakiko says.

Yusei falls to one knee and his life points drop to 3700.

"Hehehahahaha! Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot to explain. This duel disk has a special mechanism. When you take damage, an equal amount of electricity flows through it." Says Takasu.

"What?" Yusei asks.

"From past examples, it's unlikely that the loser of this duel will live. That's what I meant when I said that only the survivor would be able to remove the duel disk. I set two cards and end my turn." Says Takasu.

Yusei stands up, his legs are a little shaky, but he's far from beaten. "My turn. I summon The Kick Man in attack position!" Yusei says.

The Kick Man has 1300 attack points and is a Level 3 monster.

The prisoners cheer. The guy who gave Yusei this card isn't seen, but they can hear him. "That's my card!" "Go, Yusei! The Kick Man will blast Takasu to bits!"

"Hm." Says Takasu, groaning.

"Then, the Equip Spell 'Stim-Pack'. The equipped monster gains seven-hundred attack points." Yusei says. Kick Man's new attack points are 2000. "The Kick Man, attack Iron Chain Repairman." Says Yusei.

"I won't let you do that! Continuous Trap 'Soul Anchor'! This card is equipped on to Iron Chain Repairman. When this card is on the field, it cannot be destroyed in battle!" Takasu says.

"However, you still take damage." Says Yusei.

Takasu's life points decrease to 3600.

"He did it!" Yanagi says. "Now he'll also receive an electric shock." Says Himuro. "Aaaaaaaaaagh... hahahahahahahahahah! Hahahahahahahah!" Takasu fake screams and then laughs.

"Huh?" Yusei asks.

"I don't believe it. It seems my duel disk is malfunctioning." Says Takasu.

"What?" Yusei asks.

"This is also his trap." Says Sakiko.

Aoyama is shaking with anger, he's really getting into this. "That's cheating! There never was electricity flowing through his duel disk from the beginning!" Aoyama says.

"Haha! Stop making false accusations. It's not my fault that it's malfunctioning." Says Takasu. "You're a cheater!"

"Yusei, stop! This duel doesn't count!" Aoyama says.

"That's not allowed! I apologize to your hero, but it's no reason to stop the duel. The duel will continue!" Says Takasu.

Aoyama, Himuro, Yanagi and Sakiko gasp, Yusei's trapped!

Yusei doesn't flinch, just patiently waits for Takasu to make his move.

"My turn! From my hand, I summon Iron Chain Snake!" Takasu says.

Iron Chain Snake has 800 attack points and is a Level 3 monster. "Take Iron Chain Snake's monster effect! Iron Chain Snake is equipped on to your monster, and it loses eight-hundred attack and defense points." Says Takasu.

Iron Chain Snake lands on The Kick Man's shoulders, weighing him down. His points drop to 1200.

"Go, Iron Chain Repairman!" Takasu says.

Iron Chain Repairman smashes The Kick Man with one swing of his giant, boxlike hammer. Yusei starts to feel the electricity again and endures it, teeth clenched. Yusei's down to 3300 life points.

"When Iron Chain Repairman destroys a monster in battle, you take three-hundred points of damage!" Says Takasu.

Surprise and shock register on Yusei's face, right before the generators kick in again and he cries out, in pain. His life points fall even further, leaving him with 3000 remaining.

"Yusei!" Aoyama says.

"Sonny!" Says Yanagi.

"Yusei!" Sakiko and Himuro both say.

Yusei falls to his knees again, gasping for breath.

"That's not all. When a monster equipped with Iron Chain Snake is destroyed in battle, its controller has to send cards from his deck to the graveyard equal to the Level of the equipped monster. The Kick Man's Level is three. Now, send three cards from your deck to the graveyard!" Says Takasu. Yusei discards three times, his duel disk is surrounded by a misty purplish fog. The cards Yusei discards are Tri-Horned Dragon, 'United We Stand' and The Unhappy Maiden.

"Hehehahahaha! I'll send you back to that garbage dump you call a hometown! But, I'm going to kill you first! Ehehehahahahah!" Takasu says. He keeps laughing over the final lines.

"Yusei!"

"Yusei!" Says Himuro.

"Don't give up, Yusei." Sakiko says.

"Stand up!" Says Aoyama.

"Stand up, Yusei! Stand up, Yusei! Stand up, Yusei!" The prisoners all chant.
