Chapter 8
*Molly Anne's POV*
I handed over my ticket to the person at the gate and walked in. I still have to keep an eye out for my three not-so-subtle servants. I bought some cotton candy, for it was the first sweet thing that caught my attention. I started to sing a song that was stuck in my head. "The full moon slightly chipped; that's so me, so please. Save me and hold me tight, just make me all right. Under the dark clouds, wingless swans in my soul…From the fortress, a pessimist…" That is until I got distracted by something pretty.
I walked down the path created, while dodging and cursing out people, and looked at each stall eventually catching my attention in one of them. I stared at a doll with a ruby red dress, wood-brown curly locks, and bright brown glass eyes. The owner form the stall finally noticed me my presence and turned to look at me with eyes that were anything but innocent. "What can I get you my dear?" he asked in a high pitched voice, almost as high as a woman's. "How can I get the doll with the ruby red dress?" I asked in my business tone.
The man replied in his shrill voice, "All you have to do is knock over all the bottles that I have set up." He grinned and said, "But as you can see, it is impossible since I have set up four courses and you only get three balls." I smirked at him and said, "Try me." I had enough confidence and it could be heard in my voice. As if it would make a difference, the man gave me two balls instead of three.
I threw the first ball at the first course knocking them all down with enough force left over to bounce off the first wall, and aim towards the second wall, which knocked down the second course completely as well. I threw the second ball and it did the same with the third set of bottles. The only difference in the outcome was, that when it got to the fourth course, it didn't completely knock them down. "Better luck next time little la-"
He started to say that but as he was about to finish, the second ball came back a second time and hit the back of the creepy man's head. After his head was hit, it went on to hit the last bottle standing. I reached up to get the doll and said, "I never miss because my aim is absolute." He asked, "What kind of weird magic do you us-" His face went pale beyond compare, "Aaahhhhhh! Demon girl! Demonic being get away!"
I turned around and saw nothing, but I did catch a glimpse of silver hair near a stall. I rubbed my eyes to check again, but as I thought, nothing was ever there. "That's weird…I think I'm seeing things again…" I turned to look back at the stall only to find the man gone and the doll presented to me upfront with a note saying,
Little girl who's the only one to beat my game,
I don't know what kind of power you possess, but here is the doll you so very much wanted and here is your money back. I would keep the money but I rather not risk my chances with death. Though a gift may possess you, do remember that death always follows you and when your good luck runs out so will your life. Here is an extra gift that had just arrived this morning,
I looked over the counter again and found a beautiful porcelain doll with very long white hair and a black funeral dress. It had bright magenta eyes and a black head piece. Its face was carefully detailed with a light rimming of black around the eyes and the smile was not a gentle one. The smile was more of a malicious type of smile.
I am sure you don't look like you're the type to play with dolls, but just in case you give them away or something. No need to find me or mention me in anything, so goodbye and it has been pleasure doing business with you.
-The man who was at this stall
The next thing that caught my attention was an open area where they kept the petting zoo. I saw rabbit, goats, sheep, chickens and, my favorite, horses! I walked over and the chickens clucked and tried their best to get my attention. After a while they stopped, so I felt bad and I went over there to look at them. They seemed to notice my presence and started to head towards me.
One of the chickens tried to fly up and managed to go over my head, resulting in me chasing it for fifteen minutes. At the end of the chicken chase, I had ended up with my hair all over the place and an apology from the petting zoo owner. I had found out that I could ride the horse and rode it like no one could at the fair that day. The keeper from the petting zoo came up to me and told me that in exchange of the apology of the owner, he would have him son escort me and have to buy me things.
The owner's child[A2] was a tall and pale, he had no visible blemishes on his face. He had a bright and white smile. He smiled at everything I had said and his blue eyes shown in the light. His hair was a light blonde and his body structure was that of an average one. His voice a deep, yet velvety one when he spoke earnestly. I knew this by just looking at him when he was presented to me.
"Come one! Come all! Come gather around for the show is yet to begin! See as our lion tamer, James, tame the lovely beast Lila, our lioness; or come watch as Sky dances around the tight rope; if not those two, come watch Emilia and Anna throw Hansel into the air and catch him as if he wasn't risked in the danger! Also, Akashi[A3] , our knife thrower, will attempt to hit multiple things at once. And for those who love our reptilian pals, we have Dragon training and playing a special tune for his pet snake! So come gather around now or you'll miss the show!" a set of speakers resided within the area.
I thought of how badly I wanted to see the circus show, but how the mention of the word snake terrified me. "Hey, come on, we don't want to miss the - …hey, what's wrong?" he asked me finally turning to look at me. I was shaking and I almost dropped my things right there, but still had them in an iron grip hold. Sensing my discomfort, he walked away from me and out of view. I quickly darted my eyes in his direction before panicking and running after him in fear of a loose snake.
As I turned the corner, I could hear a rattle close by and I froze, a baby rattle doesn't sound that way… I was correct because as I turned to look at the source of the noise I was met by a rattlesnake. My voice didn't make a sound, I couldn't find my voice. I could not hear the sound of anything around me, but I could feel tears pricking at the corner of my eyes. I didn't know what to do…I couldn't think of anything as my brain unfroze slowly.
Suddenly, the snake is out of view and I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. "Are you okay?" I hear a voice say. I turn to see that it was Aiden, the petting zoo owner's son, "Oh my god…thank you!" I told him as I tackle-hugged the boy. A familiar weight settles on my head, "Huh?" Aiden laughed as he let himself be hugged, "That's just Matilda, the chicken that took a liking to you. She is the one who took out that snake, she wanted to accompany me after I got this for you." He said as he handed me a basket and I placed the things I was holding.
"There, now you look like little red riding hood except that you have a purple coat." Aiden told me. He pried himself off and grabbed my hand. "Come on, we are going to miss the show if you just stand there." He told me. Matilda moved on my head to get comfortable and so she wouldn't fall off while Aiden pulled me along to the circus tent.
"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of all ages. Welcome to today's show, I am 'The Ringmaster' and I would like to show you today's opening act, a very secret performer that only comes out to perform on special occasions…May I present to you, Aurèle! Our amazing sword master and swallower!" The ringmaster moved aside to reveal a very pale and red-eyed person.
"Hello everybody, I am Aurèle, also known as the world famous sword master, if I could please get a special member from the audience to assist me in this once-in-a-lifetime show opener. Hmmm? Who should I pick?" Aurèle said from the bottom in the ring to way up in the back where I and Aiden were.
"Any volunteers? How about you miss with the purple coat! The one all the way up there, would you like to participate in my opening act?" he said still looking in my direction. Everyone in the crowd turned to look at me and Aurèle just held out his hand as if he expected me to take it without a choice. "Come my dear Lady, I will need your special assistance in this act because I know everyone would be too afraid to do it!" he smiled.
Aiden smiled as he encouraged me to go down, "Come on, Aurèle never chooses somebody for one of his shows. Trust me, they will be fun!" I glanced at Aiden before looking down at Aurèle and back towards Aiden. "Are you sure?" I asked him with a hint of hesitance in my voice. He nodded and smiled, "Of course! For you to be the first, and probably the only, one to assist Aurèle on stage, it is an amazing experience for you to have. So if I were you, I'd take the opportunity. We haven't seen him for a while, so go, embrace destiny!"
I sighed before looking towards Aurèle, "Alright…" I slowly took Matilda off my head and walked down the steps before reaching the ring. Aurèle's smile grew as I took his hand. "Alright! She took the offer after all! Alright everybody, time for the show to begin!"
