The Model Saga

Part Ten

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen nor even touched

But just felt in the heart.

Steve frowned, shifting his weight on the mattress as an insistent, irritating sound broke through his sleep, disturbing him and bringing him to a stage of awareness which he resented. He squeezed his eyes shut against the light he could now feel on his face and tightening his hold on Danielle when she moved beside him, her naked body brushing against his.

"Steve?" She murmured, her voice sounding quiet and sleepy in the heavy silence of his bedroom.

"Hmmm?" He whispered back, too peaceful to say anything further as he leaned down and brushed a kiss against her temple before he settled back down on the pillow, planning on catching a few more minutes of sleep before he forced himself out of bed to make Danielle some breakfast knowing that she would need it. They had spent the majority of the night exploring each other's bodies and getting to know what they each liked. It was worth it in his eyes, regardless of the exhaustion pulling at him, reminding him with a vengeance that a couple of hours sleep wasn't enough anymore to satisfy him.

Steve had never experience anything like he had during the night with Danielle, normally when he had sex with a woman, they would perform the act together, share a smile before turning away from each other and falling asleep, at least that was how it was with Catherine. Not once could be remember taking the time to cuddle his partner or to have them snuggle up against him but it was different with the blonde beside him. He had spent the night with his arms around her, holding her close to him, not wanting to have any space between them.

The desire to have her close had surprised him, making him wonder whether everything which he had thought about himself when it came to relationships and what he wanted from them, was in fact wrong and all because of the small woman in his arms. The same one who had somehow managed to burrow herself through all his defence with an ease which was startling. She was the first person in years who had managed to do it and she had done it without even trying within one evening of them being together.

The thought should have alarmed him and yet it didn't, if anything it brought him a surprising feeling of peace and happiness which he wanted to hold onto.

"Steve" Danielle mumbled again, reaching out blindly and patting his arm. "Your cell phone keeps going off and it's not stopping. Please make it stop."

Steve forced his eyes open, his gaze automatically flickering towards the window taking in the bright sunlight spilling through the curtains he had closed the night before, sunlight which was coming to rest on his side of the bed. It was clearly already morning, probably mid-morning if he had to guess. He frowned, looking back at Danielle, smiling when she saw that her eyes were still closed, her face fixed in a relaxed expression as she breathed in and out, her hand resting on top of the arm he still had wrapped around her. For a moment he allowed himself to simply watch her before his smile grew into a grin when she spoke again. "Stop watching me and answer your phone Steve." She stated just as the phone in question began ringing again. She cracked opened one eyes, squinting up at him before she smiled.

"Okay, okay, I'm answering it, you rest." He told her, unable to resist leaning down and brushing a kiss across her mouth before he twisted on the bed and grabbed his cell phone from where he kept it on his bedside table and answered it without bother to look at the screen. "This is McGarrett."

"Finally!" An irritated feminine voice stated. "I was beginning to think that you were never going to answer your phone. Where are you Boss? Is everything okay or do you need some help somewhere?"

Steve blinked, raising an eyebrow when he picked up on the underlying concern beneath the clear annoyance in Kono Kalakaua's voice over the phone line.

"Where am I?" Steve repeated, absently pulling Danielle closer to him as she shifted again in his arms, her hand coming up to cover her mouth as she yawned. "What do you mean where am I? I'm at my house at the moment, why are you asking where I am?"

"Why am I asking you?" She said in disbelief. "The reason why I'm asking you boss is because in case it's escaped your notice, it's ten o'clock in the morning which means that you should be here with us, in the office, getting some work done. Danny is about ready to tear his hair out and was saying that he was going to drive down to your house and drag you back here himself. The only thing which stopped him from doing it was because a phone call from the Governor came in and he had to take it. I would suggest you get down here before he gets off the phone and pick up some coco pops on your way in unless you're actually sick?" She asked him.

Steve eyes widened as he twisted on the bed and looked at the alarm clock he kept on the bedside table. An alarm clock which was clearly showing that it was already five minutes past ten just as Kono had stated which meant that he was already two hours late to work.

"Fuck" He swore, gently moving Danielle off of him so he could sit up on the mattress. "I'm not sick, I just overslept Kono. I'll be in the office shortly, just do me a favour and tell Danno that I'm on my way, the last thing I want is for him to come down here. The rant which he has brewing can wait. I'm guessing since you're in the office that we haven't been called into a case yet?" He questioned, his gaze shifting to Danielle as she sat up, pulling the white sheet up to cover herself, a pensive look on her face. He reached out and wrapped his hand around the back of her neck, holding her in place as he shot her a quick smile.

"No, we haven't got a case in yet though we may have one after this call depending on why the Governor was calling, Danny's been having us work on out backlog of paperwork while we wait." Kono answered him, an unhappy note coming to her voice which caused Steve to smile. It was a well-known fact within their team that Kono hated paperwork days with a passion.

"I'll be in the office within the hour, if a case does come on then text me the address of the crime scene and I'll meet you all there, otherwise I'll see you shortly in the office," He told her before he hung up the phone, throwing it down onto the bed.

"Is everything okay Steve?" Danielle asked him, bringing her knees and wrapping her arms around them, resting her cheek against the top of them as she watched Steve with a questioning look.

"Yeah everything is okay Danni, it was Kono who was on the phone, she's the Rookie on the team. She was calling to tell me that I'm running late for work. I guess everything we did last night wore me out and I forgot to set the alarm for this morning. It's not a big deal though, everyone is late once in a while." He said, turning his head and kissing her softly.

"Whoops" She said lightly when they pulled apart. "That is probably my fault, I'm sorry" She moved away from him before she rolled to the edge of the bed and came to her feet, picking up her underwear where Steve had thrown it the night before once they had returned to bed again and pulled them on, adjusting it so it was comfortable. She breathed out, glancing towards the window with a thoughtful look back over her shoulder at Steve, watching as he pulled open the wardrobe before she spoke again. "If you need to get into work Steve then I can get a taxi back to the hotel. It shouldn't be too far and if you're already late then you probably shouldn't press your luck." She commented with a shrug at him.

"I'm already late Danni so it's not going to matter, the team know what happened and they know that I'm on my way in so that should be enough for them. Besides I have to pass your hotel, I'm not going to let you waste your money in a taxi when I'm here." He stated, throwing the pair of cargo pants and t-shirt he had selected onto the bed. "I'm going to take a quick shower. Maybe you could join me? I'll wash your back if you wash mine as well?" He offered with a cheeky grin as he raised his eyebrows up and down at her, his grin widening when she laughed at his comment.

"I think we both know that if I joined you in the shower then it would be a bad idea because then you would be really late for work, late enough that your team would probably definitely come here looking for you." She pointed out with a wink at him.

"That's probably right" Steve said with a sigh as he shook his head. "I won't be long, help yourself to anything you need within the house Danni." He told her, reaching out and brushed his hand down her soft hair before he turned and headed into the en-suite bathroom, taking a quick shower and brushed his teeth before he stepped back into the bedroom and pulled on his clothes. He left the room, taking the stairs two at a time and headed through the rooms to the kitchen, his eyes automatically focusing on Danielle.

She was standing beside the counter, leaning back against it as she sipped a mug of coffee she held in her hands. She had dressed in the same clothes as the night before, for a moment he stared, trying to wrap his head around the fact that Danielle was in his house and had spent the night with him.

"Hey, I hope you don't mind but I needed a caffeine hit so I made myself a coffee. I made you one as well in you wanted it but I wasn't sure how you took it so I left it black, I figured that if you wanted to add something to it then you could." She said, nodding her head towards the large mug which was sitting on the counter top.

"Thanks" He said, picking the mug up and kissing her before he took a sip of it, making a humming sound at the richness of the taste. He couldn't resist bridging the gap between hem and kissing her, his eyes drifting shut at the soft touch of her lips. He was beginning to wonder if he was addictive to the feel of her lips. "The coffee is really good thanks Danni." He complimented her as he pulled back, his mouth tilting into a smile when she shot her a pleased look.

"You're welcome, we should drink up and head out so you can get to work" She suggested, bringing her own mug to her mouth and taking a long sip of it, Steve following her example.

They were soon finished and placed the mugs by the sink before gathering their belongings and headed out of the front door, Danielle moving down the garden path towards Steve's truck while he punched into the security system on the wall which he had finally had installed after enduring at least two months of his partner's ranting on the subject. He locked the door behind him and followed Danielle's route towards his truck. She was waiting beside the passenger door, her arms crossed as she looked around her with a curious look, clearly taking in the scenery and the area that Steve lived in.

He unlocked the truck, the clicking sound attracting Danielle's attention to him again.

"It's open" He called out to her, his heart swelling at the smile she shot him before she opened the passenger door and climbed in. He could see her looking around the interior, smiling when she caught sight of the pineapple air freshener hanging from the mirror before she looked towards him as he climbed in, closing the driver's door behind him and started the engine.

"I've got to admit that I'm not very surprised that you own a truck. I had a feeling that you would or failing that maybe a muscle car like your partner had last night." She commented lightly, twisting in her seat and grabbing the seatbelt which she pulled on.

"In fairness you're half right Danni. The majority of times I'm actually driving Danno's car, the one he picked us up in last night. It's easier to use it in our line of work as it provides us with the speed we need when we're chasing down leads and suspects. This truck is more there for emergencies or when Danny has plans of his own which requires him to have it. You can almost think of it in the terms that we have joint custody over that car." He explained to her with a grin as he pulled on his own seatbelt on before he started the engine.

"And Danny is cool with you driving his car around all the time or is he the one who is in the driving seat when you're together?" She asked him curiously, resting her elbow on the edge of the window which Steve had automatically moved down for her. He considered her question for a moment.

"I'm the one who drives the car when I'm in it Danni, Danno is in the passenger seat. He complains about it on a regular basis but that is just the way he is. If he isn't complaining about something then you know that there is something seriously wrong with him. I guess he's resigned himself to being in the passenger seat now." Steve told her as he reversed out of the driveway into the empty road.

"So Danny complains often about things?" She questioned.

"Saying he is complaining is a very nice way of putting it. We normally refer to it as him ranting but each of us are used to it. Its the way he works and the way he shows affection to people he cares about. It's his way of showing that he cares enough about them to worry about them. If he doesn't care about you then he won't subject you to anything but politeness because he simply doesn't care enough about the person to bother with them. So, trust me when I say that you almost want Danny to start ranting at you." Steve stated with a half-smile.

"I guess I won't be hearing any rants from him for a while then" Danielle remarked.

Steve glanced towards her, catching the undercurrent of concern which came to her voice. It touched him that she clearly wanted his best friend to like her and was willing to put up with a rant from him if that was what it took.

"I've got no doubt that Danny will be on his best behaviour with you for a while." Steve promised her, taking one hand off of the wheel and reached out, taking her hands in his, her interlocked their fingers together, squeezing down on it.

"Why is that then?" She asked him interestedly, her thumb stroking the side of his hand.

"Many reasons, too many to go into now but you'll just have to trust me Danni when I say I am a leading expert on reading a certain Detective Daniel Williams." He assured her with a grin before he brought their linked hands to his mouth and brushed a kiss across her knuckles, smiling against the warm skin when he heard her breathe hitch at the soft touch.

"I'll keep that in mind for the future" She remarked.

"Do that" He agreed, taking one the road to the left-hand side which led directly to the hotel. He parked in the short-term parking spot and tuned to look at her, hundreds of questions crawling up his throat, desperate to be let out and shared. He was saved from having to say anything when she leaned forward, her free hand coming to a rest on the side of his neck as she kissed him, the touch tender, promising him so much without words. He let her control the kiss, a hum of disappointment escaping when she pulled away from him.

"Danni" he murmured, watching as her eyes softened at him.

"I had a really, really good time with you last night Steve. Thank you for everything including the best omelette I have tasted." She remarked with a wink at him, the comment causing him to laugh, even as he wondered when the last time, he had laughed so much in such a short period of time had been. "So, you have my number so when you next find yourself with some free time then give me a call." She told him, pulling away and unlocking her seatbelt before she placed her hand on the door handle, clearly about to open it.

"How about tonight if you're free?" He asked, the words spilling out of him. He watched her still for a moment before she looked back at him with a thoughtful look.

"Tonight?" She repeated, continuing when he nodded at her. "My sister actually texted me when I was making the coffee and you were in the shower. She wants to have dinner tonight with me and I've already said yes to it, I'm sorry." She told her, regret clear in her voice.

"Ah, yeah of course, I'm free tomorrow night as well if you're around." He responded with a shrug, trying hard to keep the disappointment out of his voice, something which he must have partially failed to do if the look on her face was any indication to go by.

She remained silent for a moment, biting her bottom lip, her eyes lowered as though she was having an internal conversation with herself before she looked up and spoke.

"This may seem forward and I'm sorry if it is but maybe, if you have no plans tonight like you said, then you could come down and join us? We're just having food and cocktails in the hotel restaurant. There is no pressure of course, I know that asking you to come to dinner with my sister is... well it's probably unexpected but I would like the two of you to have to chance to meet each other properly. I know that Cait can come off as a bit… well… abrupt and standoffish but once her get beneath that she's actually a really good person and she is my sister and she does mean a lot to me. If you'd rather not then that is completely fine as well, I can meet you afterwards somewhere if you want depending on how long the meal goes on for." She suggested, looking nervous briefly.

"I would be honoured to go to dinner with you and Caitlin tonight Danni" He told her, knowing it was the right response from the way her whole face brightened up at his words. "As long as there are no cases today then I should be finished at work by six again. I can drop you- a text when I leave." He suggested.

"Yeah that sounds like a plan to me, I can come and meet you in the foyer and bring you to Cait." Danielle said with a nod at her, leaning forward and stealing a quick kiss and moving back before he could react to it. "You've got to het to work now, I'll message you later on, have a good day Steve." She said before she jumped out of the truck and closed the door. Steve watched as she walked away from his truck towards the entrance, stopping only once to look over her shoulder at him, giving him a wave before she disappeared inside.

Steve sighed, gripping the steering wheel of the truck as he twisted it, pulling away from the kerb. His mind replaying over and over again the fact that he had said yes to having dinner with Danielle and her sister. Steve had never gotten to the stage in any of his previous relationships where he had met the member of the family and yet here, he was meeting a member of Danielle's family. A woman, who his brain was helpfully reminding him that he had only known for two days.

It didn't take Steve long to reach the Five-O headquarters, he pulled into the car park, his eyes instantly landing on his teammate's cars in the lot indicting that they were still there and hadn't been landed with a case yet. He climbed out of the truck, locking it behind him and made his way into the building, by-passing the security checks and headed up the stairs two at a time until he was on their floor. He walked down the corridor, fighting against the urge to start whistling as he pushed open the glass door and entered the familiar room.

"Steve you've finally made it in, is everything okay Brah, it's not like you're one to be late after all."

"Yeah, everything is fine Chin, I just overslept this morning, I guess I forgot to set my alarm clock, sorry to have worried you all." He responded, ignoring the way Chin's dark eyes narrowed thoughtfully at his comment.

"I see" Was all he said, his voice making it clear that he knew there was more to the story then Steve was telling him.

Steve moved passed Chin, clapping his hand down on his shoulder before he crossed the room and pushed open Danny's door, plonking himself in the chair in front of the desk just as Danny finished his call on his cell phone and placed it on the surface of the desk.

"Well look who had finally decided to grace us with his presence at work. I was just about to call in the national guard since every time you are late to something it seems to be a state of national emergency." Danny stated with a smirk which Steve mirrored, noticing that his partner's comment was missing any real bite to it. If anything, the blond looked as relaxed as Steve had ever seen him get, telling Steve without words that perhaps he wasn't the only one who had a good night the previous night. He blinked, focusing his attention back on the other man when he continued to speak. "So, I would ask you how last night went with the lovely Danielle but the fact that you've swaggered in here over two hours late after informing our concerned rookie that you had overslept already tells me everything I need to know. That and the fucking proud of yourself grin which has been plastered on your face from the minute you stepped into the office."

Steve shrugged his shoulders at him as he leaned against the back of his chair.

"You know everyone is entitled to oversleep every once in a while. Like I explain to Chin I merely forgot to turn the alarm on this morning, its no harm, no foul Buddy" Steve replied casually, his grin widening when Danny stared at him for a moment before making an amused sound at the back of his throat.

"I guess that's true." He admitted, picking up his pen from the table surface and twirled it between his fingers as he studied Steve's face for a moment before he spoke again. "So, when are you next seeing Danielle then? I'm guessing that is your plan after all?" He queried.

"I'm seeing Danni tonight after work." Steve told Danny, watching as the younger man's eyebrow shot up.

"You're seeing her tonight." Danny said with a raised eyebrow. "Last night must have gone really well between you if she's agreed to see you again so quickly, what are your plans for the date or are you still trying to decide?"

"It did go well" Steve confirmed, considering the second part of Danny's question for a moment before he answered. "Danni is having dinner and drinks with her sister and she asked me to come to the hotel to join them. She wants me to ger to know Caitlin better since she feels like I've been taken in by her sister's bitchy defence mechanism according to Danni." Steve stated.

"Well you'll soon find out if that is true or not later on." Danny replied mildly. "Still Danni asking you to come to dinner with her sister is kind of a big deal isn't it, especially since this will technically be your second date together. What exactly did you do to her? Did you put a spell on her or did you just unleash the full effect of your Smooth dog act on her?"

"Maybe she just likes my company Danni, I know this might be a shock for you to wrap your head around but some people actually like hanging out with me and not… oh I don't know… ranting at me every two seconds about something." Steve pointed out.

"Well that's true" Danny replied after an initial pause. "Though perhaps some people in your life only rant at you because you are determined to cause them to have a heart attach at the end of each day due to yet another crazy stunt that you come up with and have to do, did you ever think of that?"

"Yeah, yeah I love you as well Buddy." Steve stated with a wave of his hand before he leaned forward in his chair, the sudden movement causing Danny to suddenly look defensive. "So, we've spoken about my date with Danni last night but we haven't mentioned yours yet? Did it go well?" He asked, watching as Danny's facial expression fell into one which he hadn't encountered before and one which he could read.

"My meeting last night went fine." Danny replied after a moment with a shrug of his shoulders.

"Your meeting? Is that what you call your dates these days?" Steve commented, sounding amused for a second before he turned serious. "Are you going to tell me anything about it? Like who exactly your meeting was with?" He pressed, frowning when Danny simply gave another shrug.

"Yeah sure, we can discuss it, how about I tell you all about it over ice cream later and we can gossip and brush each other's hair. We could start with you telling me every single detail about your date and what happened with Danni after I dropped the two of you back at your place, how about that?" Danny countered as he leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest with a waiting expression on his face. Steve opened his mouth to reply when he stopped, suddenly struck with a strong desire to keep everything which happened between him and Danielle, strictly between the two of them. "That's what I thought so how about this, I'll respect your privacy when it comes to you and Danielle and you respect mine as well while everything else in our lives are up for grabs as per usual. How about that as a compromise between us?"

"Fine" Steve said, making a mental note to do some investigating if Danny wouldn't tell him. It was his job as the other man's partner to make sure that he wasn't heading in the direction of more heartbreak and it was a job which Steve took extremely seriously, even if he never said anything out loud. Danny had been through enough pain and heartbreak in his life and Steve wouldn't allow anyone else to add to it.

"Now shouldn't you be heading off to your own office to start on your own pile of paperwork, it's got to be done today and I doubt that you want to be stuck in your office finishing it off while Danielle is waiting for you. On top of that if you're trying to impress Caitlin then you being late tonight wouldn't be the best way to do it. If you do want to make a good impression on her, I mean you might not want to regardless of what Danielle might hope." Danny remarked, tapping his pen against the table surface in a random beat.

"Why would me being late tonight piss of Caitlin and how would you even know that?" Steve questioned, feeling his own eyes narrow when Danny laughed at the remark.

"Because I, unlike you Steven, have common sense and I am an older sibling myself, no older sibling wants to see their younger sibling to be messed around with because the person they are waiting for is late." He pointed out before he jabbed his pen towards the closed door. "Now go and get started, you're late enough starting as it is."

Steve pushed himself out of his chair, rolling his eyes at Danny before he turned and headed out of the room and towards his own office. He pushed the door open, groaning when he saw the large stack of files on his desk which Danny had been talking about. A stack which would easily help keep him chained to his desk until it was home time.

Shaking his head, he took his seat, throwing his cell phone on his desk and powered his computer up before grabbing the first file from the pile.

All he had to do was get through the day and the files and then he would be with Danielle again.
