Chapter Ten: SICK!

Kagome woke up groggy and not quite sure where she was. The last thing she remembered was leaving the room and the nurse calling her name then nothing. "Glad to see you're awake Higurashi-chan." Dr. Yamada said softly as she blinked her eyes open. "What happened?" Kagome asked roughly. "Your self-destructive habits while your mother was with us caught up to you as you were leaving." Dr. Yamada replied chidingly. Kagome winced. "Oh." She said. "You have some visitors. I'm willing to let them see you if you promise that you'll continue to rest while you're here." Dr. Yamada said. Kagome nodded. "I will. I have no choice right?" She replied half-teasing. Dr. Yamada chuckled. "That's correct Higurashi-chan." He agreed.
"Kagome what happened?! The hospital called and said that you were in here too!" Souta demanded as he beat everyone else through the door. Kagome fought the urge to roll her eyes. "I got sick watching over mama. I passed out and they admitted me so I could get my strength back." She replied as she yawned. "Kagooooomeeeeee you can't do things like that! What would mama say if she saw you like this?" Souta drew her name out in a whine. Kagome's eyes widened. "They didn't tell you?" She asked. "Tell me what? All they said was that you were sick too." Souta replied. Kagome closed her eyes. "Mama died Souta. She died before I was admitted." She said softly. "No way. Mom's strong! She wouldn't die so quickly." Souta protested. Kagome's eyes snapped open. "Well she did. I was there when she went. Her wounds were too severe for them to save her." She replied quietly, letting the words sink into her own tired mind. "Who will take care of the shrine now? I'm too young, you're in school and grandpa's too old." Souta asked in shock. "Kikyo can." Kagome replied tiredly.
"You know Kikyo?" Inuyasha asked. "Duh. She's my cousin. Of course I know her." Kagome yawned. "Kikyo is Inuyasha's new girlfriend." Shippo said helpfully. Kagome chuckled. "She picked a winner that's for sure. Way better than that last loser she was dating." She replied. "Do you know how your mother died?" Sesshoumaru finally spoke. "Yeah. I think so. I can't prove it yet but I think Kouga did it to try and frighten me back to his side." Kagome replied disgustedly. "You mean that loser wolf demon that kept stalking you all freshman year?" Souta sneered. "Yes. He came by the house a few days ago and got his ass kicked. I don't think he takes rejection very well." Kagome replied. Souta growled. "I'd love to show him what I learned in mui thai today." He grumbled. Kagome smiled fondly. "Don't worry about him kiddo. As soon as I get better, I'm going to plaster him all over the shrine." She replied. Souta grinned. "I almost feel sorry for that stupid pelt." He said. Kagome thought about scolding him but decided to let him have this one moment. "Don't think you can just slack off now that mama's not there to keep you in line mister. I will be coming by and checking up on the shrine and you so you had better behave." Kagome warned. "Yes sis." Souta replied with a sigh. 'Man sisters are a drag.' He thought with a frown. Then he perked up. 'At least I still have mine.' Souta thought with a smile. "Alright. Visiting time is now over. Please come back and see her tomorrow." Dr. Yamada said cheerfully. Souta led the others out, ignoring Inuyasha's protests that he hadn't even gotten to say hello like a professional. "You can always come back tomorrow baka." Souta scolded. Kagome laughed softly as she heard her brother scolding her friend like their mother would scold him.
