I shall shamelessly finish this with something I wrote for something else. Apologies but the shoe does fit!
Gail can't really pinpoint the exact moment when it hit her; it's probably the amalgamation of a whole lot of moments. It was the little things really, the way Holly would run her fingers along her hands no matter where they were, this little tone Holly used whenever she was annoyed with her, the head tilt, especially the head tilt, which actually affected Gail more than it should have. But it all wasn't just about Holly. Gail had more often than ever found herself staring at Holly, zoned out even following her every movement, something her friends constantly called her out on. She brushed them all off as she usually did, but whenever she did, her eyes would catch Holly's just for a second and she knew that the brunette was just barely blushing and eyeing her shyly, and that was more than enough for Gail to make up for getting caught for ogling at her girlfriend.
Her girlfriend.
It sounded glorious the first time she said those words, perfect, obvious, calming even. It felt like everything had finally fallen into place - and it was so warming. Except her girlfriend had now landed herself an amazing job at Vancouver, and had to leave in two weeks. But Gail doesn't want her girlfriend to leave, not without a part of her at least. So, perhaps that was what prompted Gail to think of the next step, and get around to it.
Gail knew one thing for sure, she wasn't the one for over-the-top gestures, so she knew this was going to take a bit of trial and error.
The first time was when the two were lazing in bed, on a Saturday morning, fingers running on bare skin, the occasional laugh breaking the silence in the morning haze, it all seemed perfect.
'Marry me.'
Holly actually stopped breathing for a moment, taking in what Gail had just said. It was such a Gail thing to do, to say something like that right out of the blue. Pretty much like the first time she said I love you. Out of nowhere - in the middle of breakfast at home, sipping coffee and looking up sheepishly up from the coffee mug. Holly laughs at the very memory of Gail, sitting up on the kitchen counter like a cat, waiting for a response. This time, Holly wanted a little more fun though.
'No.'
Gail was momentarily stunned, till she saw the smirk on Holly's face, one eyebrow raised as if to challenge her.
'You're supposed to ask nicely, and it's supposed to be romantic, and all that mushy stuff.'
'Really?'
'Hmm Mmm.'
'Till I get this right?'
'Yes.'
'You're kidding right?'
'Nope.'
And there was try one.
The second try was again typical Gail - a note tucked away in Holly's forensics kit, a small scribbled note - which simply read 'You mean like this, Lunchbox?', written as neatly as Gail could manage with her handwriting and when Holly did find it at work, she had to stop in the middle of sorting samples and have a hearty laugh at that. Nope, this was not going to happen, not like this. So she sent Gail a quick text that this wasn't going down this way.
No. Not with my forensics kit.
But it would go so well the whole Lunchbox dialogue.
No.
Sky-writing.
NO. I don't want you proposing to all the Holly's in Toronto.
At least one of them won't turn me down.
Gail could picture the look of annoyance on Holly's face, and giggled at her desk, completely disregarding Andy rolling her eyes at her.
It was 4 days till Holly had to leave, and Gail hadn't tried her hand at proposing again, to the point Holly was dejected. Maybe she shouldn't have been so hard on the blonde. Perhaps the constant shooting down had discouraged Gail, and Gail had assumed she was going to shoot her down no matter what. 4 days till Holly had to leave, and Holly didn't want to leave at all. Not without saying yes, but Gail would have to propose for that. So, the tables had now turned, and Holly was eager for Gail to try her hand at proposing once again - no matter how random or out of the blue it was.
It had been late when Gail had come in last night, but she did have the next five days off - so that was an advantage. She had felt Gail slip into bed, but now it was morning, and here she was alone in bed.
It was too early to get out of bed right now, just perfect to snooze for a while till she had to wake up. Then she heard the singing.
I know you,
I walked with you Once upon a Dream,
I know you,
The gleam in your eyes is so familiar a gleam.
Holly was still pretending to sleep, eyes closed yet she knew she was smiling so much, and it was adorable of Gail, reciting the lines out of her favorite Disney movie ever. She couldn't really stop herself from getting up and grabbing Gail to kiss her.
'Sleeping Beauty didn't wake up till the Prince kissed her.'
'Yes, Gail, Yes.'
Gail of course had gone the whole nine yards, dressed up complete in with a red cape and the whole works, and Holly just couldn't stop giggling as Gail continued with her own version of Prince Phillip between hot wet kisses Holly could not stop at all.
'So, this means we can get married in Vegas?'
Holly rolled her eyes at that.
'Didn't this whole example of romance teach you anything at all?'
