Chapter 10
'So you nervous?' Noah asks.
'No, I'll be fine. I worked really hard for this. I'm going to get it. Thanks for all your help.' She gives me a hug. We walk into the caf. Everything's ready for the speeches. Adelina smiles at me one more time. 'Good luck!' Noah says.
She walks up to the stage. Mister Johnson introduces the two candidates. Noah cheers really hard for Adelina and stays quiet when he introduces Jack. Jack's speech he didn't catch anything because he's looking at Adelina.
'Thank you, Jack. Adelina please tell us about your plans.'
'Thank you, mister Johnson.' She takes one deep breath. She looks up. Her father is in the back he waves at her. She smiles. 'I love this school. I don't love high school. Let's face it no one really does. But this school means a lot to me. The whole school means a lot to me. I'm the kind of person who wants to see the whole picture. Not just the popular kids, not just the athletes, because some people may not realize it yet but high school and especially not this school is about being popular. I want to show everyone there are more important things. That labels are something we have to let go of. They make us judge. They make sure we're all divided. I want to bring everyone together. We are one school so let's start acting like it.' She raises her hand with this last statement and the whole cafeteria is clapping. 'Thank you, Adelina. Any questions for your two candidates?' Mister Johnson points someone out.
'I have a question for Adelina.'
Adelina stands up straighter. 'Shoot.' She says.
'Don't you think it's a bit impossible to get the whole school together?'
'I think the people who think it's impossible will never be able to make it come true. I think every big change starts with someone who thinks it is possible. Impossible has never been a fact. People once thought it was impossible to travel around the whole world now we can do it in a day. They thought it was impossible to vote. To have black and white people live equally together. People think a lot is impossible, but that is just someone's opinion and I'm not going to let someone's opinion stop me from something that I truly believe in. So all I ask from you is to believe with me. With one vote you can help me make this reality.'
'Okay guys, this weekend is the first football game. So I'm adding two extra practices.' Grace says to her squat.
The whole squat sighs loudly.
'I don't want to hear anyone sigh or complain. We all want to be perfect right?'
It stays silent. 'Right?!' Grace says.
'Right!' The whole squat shouts.
'Let's start with running 3 laps.' The girls stand up slowly and start walking. 'Running!'
She turns to her co-captain. 'It's like they're deaf.'
'We'll get them in line before the game. I promise.' Blair squeezes her friends arm.
'Okay, so this weekend the party. What are you going to wear?'
'I'm not sure I'm going. My mom comes home this Saturday. I want to spend time with her. As much as possible before she has to leave again.' Blair explains.
'I understand, but this is supposed to be the best party of the year. You can't miss it.' She sighs a moment. 'And I can't miss you there.'
Blair laughs. 'Yeah, like you'll have time for me. You'll be too busy making out with Warren to even notice me.'
'If you'll come I promise I won't.'
'I'll think about it. Okay?'
'Fine.' Grace looks at her squad. 'No walking!'
Charlie walks to his next class. He's distracted all he can think about is the car ride with Lily yesterday.
'You.' He said with his most charming smile. Her cheeks turned red and she looked away. He first thought it was a good sign, but then she spoke. 'Charlie, I can't help but think that you just have to proof that you can make me fall in love with you.' Charlie stays silent. 'I'm not sure but you not saying anything isn't helping your case.' She takes a deep breath. 'Please, take me home.' The rest of the ride they both stay silent. When they arrive Lily speaks. 'I think deep down you're a good guy, but I don't want to end up as you're victim. So you have to think really hard.' She finally looks him in the eye. 'If what I thought is true than stay away from me and if it's not I think we could be friends. So I'll see for myself what you decide.' She gets out of the car. "Oh, and thanks for the ride.' Charlie watches her until she's save inside and then drives away.
So what should he do?
