Growth Spurt
Master Splinter POV
I smiled as the brothers began their training exercises. Suntory and I were sitting on the floor in the center of the sparring area, her eyes bright with excitement as the brothers lept over our heads. "When I get bigger, can I train with them too, Mister Splinter?" she asked, ducking as Michelangelo flew by. I chuckled, explaining that she would have to get over her sickness first and earned a pout. "Donnie said that I'm almost as good as new-" Her words halted as the brothers' laughter filled the pipes, anger now filling her sapphire orbs. "You just watch! I'll show you!"
...
Leonardo POV
"I have no doubt," I chuckled, regaining composure and sitting next to them. "You are going to be one tough cookie when you get older." When she didn't respond, I gently poked her side. "Speaking of which, how is your appetite?" She cast me a glance, but remained silent. I sighed, smiling as Raphael snuck into the kitchen and returned holding the last of the fresh fruits in his hand. "Guess that means Raph can have the kiwi he found."
"NO!" She bolted from Master's lap and attempted to snatch the little fuzzy fruit from Raph's grasp. "I was saving that!"
I shook my head as they began to wrestle for the fruit. It was hard to believe that she had been almost nothing more than an empty shell for nearly two weeks. There were many times that we had thought that we were going to lose her, but she had miraculously come back to us. If it hadn't been for the hints from her mother... Her mother! She was probably worried sick about Suntory! I waited until everyone branched off and pulled Raph off to the side. "We should probably go leave a note for her mother," I whispered. "She would want to know about her recovery." He nodded and followed me up to the surface.
...
"What should the note say?" Raph asked as we hung from the museum rafters as it began to close.
"We're going to have to tell her everything," I replied, not looking up from the paper. "She is her mother and she deserves to know how bad Suntory was." My movements stalled as he nudged me and pointed to the painting. There she was, her fingers searching the back of the painting, and her shoulders slumped as she turned away. No one was around so this was the perfect opportunity. "Miss."
She froze, her head swiveling. "Yes?" Her hands clasped as her eyes followed the sheet of paper that I dropped and they shook as she read the contents. "Those bastards..." she growled, her breathing becoming erratic as she began to curse under her breath. "First they took her sisters, and now this!"
"Wait, sisters?" we chorused, looking to each other.
"You mean she never mentioned them?" she sighed, running a hand through her curly hair. "She was a part of triplets: Suntory, Skyla, and Seurat." I jabbed Raph in the shell as he scoffed. "No, it's alright. No one recognized the connection with their names anyway, but I named them for different shades of blue. I loved them all so much... it broke my heart when they told me that Seurat didn't survive childbirth, that she was still born, and that Skyla's immune system was nonexistent. Skyla joined her sister a few days after birth. Suntory, on the other hand," her voice cracked. "Was the only one who stayed with me... At least until they showed up and took her away from me."
"When did they take her?" I asked.
"They took her shortly after her sixth birthday..."
"At least she's healthy again, right?" Raph pipped up. "She's almost as good as new now and trust me when I say that the little squirt has more energy than we can keep up with."
A confused expression crossed her facial features as she looked up towards us, in the direction of Raph's voice. "Little squirt?" She shook her head, taking a step. "Are you telling me that she hasn't changed?"
A red flag waved in my head. "When was her birthday?" When she said April 12th 2000, an internal alarm went off. "It's 2017 now. That means she should be close to seventeen now, but she looks no older than six." I looked to Raph as he slipped out the skylight. Excusing myself, I promised to keep in touch and slipped out after him.
...
Raphael POV
"This is insane!" I bellowed, slipped down a manhole.
"Raph-"
"I knew it, she's a crazy old bat." Leo grabbed my shoulder and turned me around, his eyes glaring into mine. "And don't you lie, I can see that you think she's crazy too!" He shrugged, dropping his hand. "Why don't we ask her when she wakes up?" I pointed out as we entered the hangout.
"Ask me what?" Suntory giggled, crawling up my plastron. Wasn't she supposed to be asleep?!
The woman's words echoed in my head as she hugged my neck tightly. If she was supposed to be nearing seventeen, then why the hell was she like this?! I chuckled, looking desperately to Leo. "We were just wondering when your birthday was."
Her blue orbs grew wide and filled with sadness. "It's coming up, the 12th, but no one celebrates it anymore."
"Then why don't we have a party?" Mikey dropped down from the ceiling, picking her up and tossing her into the air. "There'll be balloons, food-"
"No!" My eyebrow rose at her sudden outburst. She removed herself from Mikey, her eyes focused on the floor. "Thank you, but I don't want one." Mikey attempted to push the subject but she kept turning him down, saying that it was no big deal. Master and Donnie appeared from their quarters as her voice steadily rose and became harsh. "I don't want a party, okay? What's so wrong with that?!" Turning, she darted to her room and slammed it shut.
"We're still having a party, right?" Mikey looked to me.
...
I bolted upright as a scream pierced the air and bolted to her room. She was thrashing, the sheets tangled in her flailing limbs. Leo grabbed her legs while I grabbed her arms as Donnie began examining her. Her eyes were wide and rolling, revealing their whites, and her lips where quivering. "Talk to us! What's wrong with her!"
"I don't know," he shouted, pulling up a strange diagram. "For some reasons, her testosterone, estradiol, and progesterone as well as prolactin levels are off the charts!" He suddenly froze, his eyes darting from the diagram to her struggling form. "This is incredible!"
"Not the best time to be gawking!" I growled. My own movements stalled as the hands I was grasping lengthened. "What the hell-" They slipped through my grasp as she curled into a fetal position and it felt as if time had stopped as they gripped her hair instead. We stood in silence as her body began to morph; first her arms and legs lengthened, closely followed by her hair growing longer and becoming a caramel-ombre coloring. I tore my eyes away from her as Leo threw a blanket over her, but not before any of us noticed that her dress was suddenly too short. "W-what was that?" I muttered once her movements had stilled.
"My best bet," Donnie whispered, gesturing for us to follow him out of the room. He brought us all into the lab and pulled up the diagram that he had pulled up before. "Judging from these levels, I would say she had a growth spurt."
"That wasn't natural though," Master pointed out her lack of change and the information that her mother had given us. "What kept her from growing until now?"
"Mutagen." My eyes narrowed as they all looked to me. "How else do you explain it? They were probably giving it to her since the moment that they took her. It was bound to affect her in some way shape or form."
"Then why did she say that she was six when we met her?" Mikey asked.
I shrugged. "I don't know, maybe she does that to protect herself."
"He is right, humans tend to be more kind towards children than to fellow adults," Master nodded. "Although, in this case, it is the opposite."
...
I cracked an eye open as the door to her room opened and felt every cell in my body freeze as she emerged. She was wearing a mid-thigh length blood red skirt that had a few buckles on the seams that revealed toned legs, an almost black v-neck tee that was decorated with silver tribals, the once too long necklace now rested almost snugly between two mounds. Her hair, which had gained caramel-tinted tips, was pulled back into a single ponytail and now reached the middle of her back. I averted my gaze as she began walking towards me and I swore that my shell was on fire as she leaned her forehead against my plastron. "Uh..."
"...morning..." I gawked; her voice now resembled something that filled my mind with a dark violet color, maybe indigo colored water? Nah, that doesn't make any sense. She raised her head, revealing her now tilted chocolate orbs that had blue rings around their pupils. "What's for breakfast? I feel like I could eat a whole-" Her words stalled as I grasped her shoulders and pushed her away slightly. "Raphael?"
"So that's it, huh?" I growled, forcing down the anger that was boiling in my gut. "No explanation for last night?"
Her eyebrow rose as her hands gestured to her body. "You think I had something to do with this?"
"You're saying you didn't?"
"Of course not! I'm as clueless are you are!"
I growled, my fist colliding with the wall behind her. "Don't lie to me, Suntory, I'm not stupid; none of us are." Hurt flashed across her face but I wasn't going to back down. "Why did you hide it from us?"
She took a slight step back, her eyes dropping to the floor. "I don't know why, but for some reason I didn't physically change although my mentality did. You could almost say that I was trapped in the wrong body," she chuckled. "when you're stuck in a body that doesn't age, your mind tends to get a bit strange. When I first met you, I was unsure of how you would handle someone like me."
"Have you seen us?" I snapped, causing her to flinch. "We are giant mutant turtles that can talk."
"I know I should have known better, but could you blame me for doing what I did when we first met?" Her hands clenched at her sides as she raised her head and locked her eyes with mine.
I studied her face, looking for anything that would suggest that she was lying, but only found fear and loneliness. For a split second, it felt as if we were connecting on a new level. We were both oddly similar, despite me being a turtle and she being human, through the mutagen that was flowing through our veins. Deep down, it was almost comforting to find someone outside my brothers and Master that was like me. I reached out ad drew her against my plastron, earning a squeak. "No more secrets, okay?"
She nodded, giving my neck a brief squeeze before she stepped away and disappeared into the kitchen. "Can you get the others up? I'll make some breakfast."
My eyes rolled. "Just because you look your age now doesn't mean you get to boss me around," I threw back as I began banging on their doors.
...
"I almost didn't even recognize you," Mikey slung an arm over her shoulders, wiggling his eyebrows. "You know, with you looking like that."
"Yeah, yeah, laugh it up," she chuckled, her eyes locking on he floor but the pink in her cheeks expressing her embarrassment. "I don't look anywhere as good as April though."
"Speaking of which, we have to send her and Casey an invite." She stiffened and removed herself from him, saying again that she didn't want a birthday party. "Aw, come on, it'll be great!"
"Calm down, it's not the end of the world if you have a birthday party." I snapped, remaining where I was even when she turned her fiery orbs to me and took a step forward. "What's da matter, pipsqueak, did I upset you? You should be happy to have a birthday party. Your sisters never got one, so you should suck it up and-" One second I was standing with my arms crossed...the next I was flying backward and crashing into the wall! Growling, I stood and peered through the dust. "What the hell what that for?!" I fell back to the floor as something collided with my plastron and I found myself staring into smoldering copper orbs.
"How did you even find out about them?!" She was breathing heavily and her body was trembling as she hovered above me. "Don't talk about my sisters as if you knew them!" With a scream, she grabbed my shell and chucked me across the room. I lept to my feet before I collided with anyone and raised my arms in time to block her punch. "You don't know anything about them! You don't have any idea what any of us went through!"
"You're mother told us that one died before she was born and the other died a few days after!" I growled, grunting as she attempted grab me again. For a split second I thought I saw the anger leave her eyes but now they blazed brightly with something else, something worse: hatred.
"I suppose she left out the little details of what happened during her pregnancy?" she nearly spat, moving away and locking her eyes with Leo. "She did drugs during the pregnancy! Cigarettes, alcohol, possibly worse! It was because of her that we were almost not born at all!"
I saw her focus waiver and flipped her, grasping her wrists above her head and my knees pinning her legs to the floor. "But you were born and that's something that we would like to celebrate! So shut up and deal with it!"
She gasped, her body going slack as her eyes locked with mine. "Are you saying...that you're glad I was born?"
"We all are," I sheepishly smiled, slowly lightening my hold on her. "Even me." We both looked up at the sounds of coughs and found my brothers and Master watching us with somewhat amused expressions. I leapt away as I realized what they were chuckling about, turning away to hide my embarrassment as she stood and dusted herself off.
"Hey, Raph, you just got your ass kicked by a girl." I whirled around, clipping the speaker in the jaw and sent them into the opposite wall. He whined loudly, begging for Suntory to nurse his wounds, but fell silent as I sent him a glare.
"I guess I can agree to the party," she said, her lips lifting into a small smile. "If you don't mind, can we have a shrine for my sisters built?" Master nodded, placing his paws on her shoulders, and assuring her that her sisters would be honored from this day forth. "Thank you, I would really appreciate it."
"Imagine two more of her," Mikey pipped up, studying her up and down. "That would have meant hotness to the max!"
She grasped his hand and pulled it back so that it was almost flat against his arm. "And this is when I am glad that there is just me."
Well? What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments!
