Arc 2: Who You Once Were
Chapter 1: Sicarius
Citri and Rain each stumbled as they were pulled along behind Celes, who had each of their wrists per hand as she charged towards the landing strip of Beacon Academy.
"Come on, we're gonna miss it!" She called back to the two boys being bent double by the significantly shorter teammate that was leading them along. Several meters behind, Phoenix couldn't help but grin to herself at the sight.
Releasing the male members from her grasp, Celes abandoned the extra weight in order to sprint at full speed down the last stretch of courtyard towards where the new first year students would be arriving. Now unrestricted by dragged downwards, Rain ran to catch up with her leaving Citri walking along at a leisurely pace.
Hands behind his head, and back tilted slightly to soak in the morning sun, the orange eyed leader was very content to take things easy on their first day back. Leaning his head back further into the pillow of his hands, Citri shut his eyes and smiled at the distant excited yell of Celes. The sound of heavy footsteps next to him caused a single eye to slowly open and roll to the left, causing Phoenix to come into the dreadlocked boy's view.
"Glad to see you join us," He joked, referencing Phoenix's reluctance to keep pace with the three as they had been dragged off by Celes.
Phoenix made an odd laugh-scoff as a reply, though given her usual abrasive attitude towards their leader, Citri assumed it was more of the latter. Which, of course, inspired him to taunt the girl more.
"Must've been really lonely back there to settle with talking to me." He continued, opening one eye again to gauge Phoenix's reaction. He was pleasantly surprised when she just shrugged, the corners of her lips almost pulling into a faint smile. Almost.
"You're in a good mood today then?" Friendly curiosity laced his voice, while no less happy go lucky, Citri was indeed showing what some may consider a serious side. Serious in that he was asking a genuine question, and not thinking up how to wind up the silver haired girl.
"It's a nice day." Phoenix responding with a tone far more casual than Citri was used to. And this time an actual smile. Damn, definitely in a good mood. It was rare, especially for Citri to see, given the two's relationship.
"Holy shit, did you get laid or something? What's with the…happy?"
"Oi, I can be happy!" Still the response was friendly. Citri had made a jibe and a sex joke and it wasn't enough to make Phoenix revert to her normal tone of conversation with him. She was being genuinely approachable towards him. Being honest with himself, Citri was somewhat curious as to why this newfound treatment was warranted.
"I feel like I'm being rewarded...Citri do good?" He broke his hands away from his head in order to fully face Phoenix.
"You got us into the second year...you did okay." A teasing smile followed up the reply, causing Citri's trademark ear to ear grin to shine through in response.
"Come on," He said, giving a friendly pat on the shoulder, "Celes is gonna be pissed if we miss this."
"Well in that case, race you." Phoenix's smile now mirroring her leader's. Without a word, the two sprinted off in unison. Citri made it all of ten paces before giving into temptation and propelling himself forwards with his staff. As his limbs trailed in his wake, he could hear the faint yell of 'cheater!' coming from behind.
When an out of breath Phoenix finally arrived at the landing point she saw her three teammates all gathered under the shade of one of the ground's many trees. As she took her place she shot a half-assed glare at Citri, who was stood with an arm draped over Celes and Rain respectively. His response was to lean to the side slightly and pull Phoenix in, or at least try to. She side stepped and batted his arm out of the way, knocking it into the back of Celes' head and generally causing annoyance throughout.
No sooner had Celes stopped looking back and forth between the two then the four were all distracted by the familiar rumble of Beacon's private airships. All minor grievances were forgotten as Celes bounced in excitement, "They're here!"
Her eagerness spread throughout the group as the first set of students began to depart onto the landing point. Rain and Phoenix watched on with general interest and mild scrutiny, while Citri and Celes were simply excited.
From his side, Citri could hear Rain muttering the types of weapon he could see, to the other side in his peripheral vision he could see Phoenix readying her camera. Sensing an opportunity for fun, Celes began posing for Phoenix, whenever the girl didn't want shots of just the new students.
Giggling slightly at all the entirely predictable going's on within the team, Citri was content to just people watch. He looked over a few people of note, but there wasn't much that stood out. Bright clothing and excessive weaponry was Beacon standard. What he did notice was a girl who looked several years too young to be here. Wierd. There was also a guy throwing up in the bay of the airship. Nice, dude.
His eyes began to linger on a blonde with a body several years older than she would be. It didn't last long though, as a shooting pain in the side of his head forced his eyes shut as Phoenix twisted his ear and muttered something about 'age of consent'.
Over the next few minutes things continued as usual. Celes posed and generally acted like an excited kid. Phoenix took photos. Rain listed weapons and Citri people watched, now ensuring that his gaze never stuck for more than a few seconds.
As the crowd thinned out he picked up on a few more notable people, but not a whole lot. There was that tournament girl who had been on the news a few months back but that was about it.
Watching as the first years all began to disperse, the four seemed about ready to head back to their new dorm. That was, of course, before they heard the explosion.
Rain Nocturne proudly strode through the courtyard in front of Beacon, he generally liked to be the first one up, so he had left while the dreadlocked guy, and
silver haired chick he met last night slept.
God the sunlight in the early morning looked good. But as Rain saw the glint on the morning dew, he began to feel rather thirsty. Right, haven't had anything to drink for at least a day. Luckily he passed a vending machine and quickly walked over and started searching the machine for any cash, or forgotten beverages. Unfortunately, there was not a single cent or drop of liquid to be found.
Well, looks like its time to take matters into his own hands. Rain drew his chainsaw edged katana, Benihime, and cleaved open the front of the machine. The console exploded due to damage to the wiring, and the sound of metal and plastic being ripped apart resounded through the courtyard. Rain merely shrugged, sheathed Benihime, and picked up a can of soda. Before he could pop it open, he heard a soft feminine voice behind him.
"Why did you do that?" The voice inquired.
Rain let out a sigh as he halted his motion. "I'm thirsty." He answered tersely.
"Why not just pay?" The voice inquired, genuine curiosity laced in it's tone.
"I don't have the money, besides, now others may enjoy a free beverage or two. " Rain answered turning to see a girl with smoky gray eyes, and shoulder length white hair.
"What about the lien in the machine?" She asked, her voice filled with concern.
"I left the cash depository intact. No one can get to the money, well unless they try to get to it." Rain answered again, trying to keep conversation brief.
"But aren't you still stealing?" The girl asked innocently.
"Requisitioning. Anyway I have to get going, good day." Rain answered turning away and popping open his drink, before the girl could stop him, he had already sprinted off.
Morning. Phoenix hated mornings. She loathed them, she despised them, she-
Phoenix Carson let out a massive yawn as she stretched in one of Beacon's many hallways and completely derailed her own train of thought. That stupid surfer boy's snoring kept her up. She was so tired, she couldn't even be angry. Well at least she'd met that strangely effeminate faunus.
Still, this was serious business, she finally made it into Beacon. Today's initiation was the perfect time to prove herself. Wait, who is that?
Phoenix saw a girl in a green coat, and black skinny jeans with white hair walk by. Her eye were grey, like smoke curling off of a fire. She was fine.
Phoenix quickly ran her fingers through her hair and straightened out her turquoise schoolgirl uniform. She took a deep breath and walked over tapping the girl on the shoulder and introducing herself.
"Hey, I'm Phoenix, who might you be?" The silver haired girl said smiling brightly.
Turning to face the girl behind her, Celes did her best to hide her look of confusion at being approached by a stranger. "Oh hello, can I help you?"
"How about dinner and a movie?" Phoenix responded instantly. Fucking smooth Phoenix, fucking smooth.
"Oh I'm sorry, I really don't think I'll have time." The girl responded, "I'm a first year, so I've got initiation today. After that there'll be loads of settling in and team stuff I guess. I know you can't give me any hints about that though. Oh, sorry! I'm rambling. Please excuse me" Celes said bowing her head in apology.
"Oh, I'm a first year as well. Hey, I've heard the stuff about teams, too. Maybe you and I could be on one? I'm a dust user and a swordswoman." Phoenix said, trying to recover her chances for a date. She drew her sword, and showed the white haired girl the glowing red dust infused blade.
"Well, that would make you a valuable teammate for anyone, I was hoping to meet a few more people before deciding on a team though, I only just arrived today." Celes replied.
"Dust infusion isn't the only thing about my sword though, check this out." Phoenix said as she pushed a concealed button on the bottom of her sword's handle. Normally this would cause ashes to be released, and they would slowly float along the edge of the sword. However Phoenix had forgotten that the ashes in the cannister in her sword were compressed.
When she pushed the button a jet of ashes flew out along the blade of the sword. The violent rush of heated ash acted like an eruption. A loud boom echoed throughout the hallway.
Phoenix, incredibly embarrassed, and not wanting to stick around for a reaction fled as the smoke cleared, leaving the white haired girl alone
"Why do things keep blowing up?" Celes said to herself with a sigh before continuing her search for the locker room..
There it was, the morning of initiation. The faunus, who had introduced himself as Rain, had already woken up and left, as well as the silver haired girl and the majority of the first year students. As usual, Citri had slept in. Great.
Dragging his sloppily dressed self into the locker room, the still tired boy saw that the room was almost empty. Rubbing at his heavy eyelids in an attempt to shake some of the oversleeping bleariness, Citri headed towards his locker.
He opened his eyes just in time to see himself walking straight into a white haired girl of about shoulder height.
Now, if there was one thing that Citri Andesine could do, it was balance. Years of experience kicked in and, as naturally as breathing, Citri pivoted on his toes. One arm outstretched to grab the girl, and keep her from falling herself while the other flung out to his side to assist with re-distributing his weight.
The girl looked noticeably shocked as she took in the events of the last half second, and Citri shot her his most winning smile as stood gawping. Suddenly, her expression turned to one of sheer horror, as she looked just past him. Deeply confused, Citri followed her gaze. As soon as he turned his head he saw what she had been looking at. As the two had collided, a jar of dust, no doubt belonging to the girl, had been thrown into the air.
The fragile case of this highly explosive compound was now falling.
Citri winced as he prepared for the jar to land...right into his hand…
Arm still outstretched from maintaining his balance, the jar had landed directly into his open palm. Fucking score! He made an awesome catch in front of a pretty girl, and he didn't explode.
This was the best start ever! Of all time! Okay dude, now just play it cool.
"Citri," he introduced himself, holding out his free hand to the girl, who took it after a few more seconds of stunned silence.
"Celeste," she replied, returning Citri's wide grin, "Or, just Celes, I guess."
"You alright?" Citri asked, as he began to absent mindedly toss the jar into the air and catch it in his hand.
"I'm fine, thank you." Celes had yet to notice the boy playing catch with the dust.
"Sorry about that," the dreadlocked boy yawned, "Just woke up, like...now." he followed up with a light laugh and smile, which Celes instantly mirrored.
"It's fine, you did well to cat-"
Aaaand then the jar exploded. The glassware had stumbled between Citri's fingers as he had yawned, and had plummeted towards the floor, reacting violently on impact.
Now covered in soot, Citri rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly, "Oops?" He offered weakly.
The four smiled and laughed a bit at how much and how little had changed. They were possibly one of the only teams who had met eac hother before initiation. Still second year students began their year a week after the first years who arrived today. Every team spent the time as a vacation, and generally it was used to rest up and prepare for the Graduation Dance. Team ANCY decided to spend the rest of the first day with a little "story time", so they all headed back to their dorm.
A certain mouse eared, and tailed, faunus sat, legs crossed, light blue hair pulled into a neat ponytail tied with a white hair ribbon. His teammates sat around him, all three sets of eyes fixated on him.
It was time to explain himself. To reveal the truth as to who exactly he was.
"Are you all comfortable? This isn't exactly a short story." Rain said, calmly glancing at each of his friends.
"All set dude, just waiting for you." Citri replied, orange eyes wide with curiosity.
"Whenever you're ready Rain." Celes said, warmly and gently.
"Get on with it! I'm on the edge of my damn seat!" Phoenix said excited, and eager to find out just what the faunus had hid from them.
"Language, Phoenix." Celes said, gently scolding her partner.
"Well, feel free to stop me and ask questions, today, I will tell you the truth of my past." Rain said, before taking a breath and continuing.
"I grew up in a small village on the outskirts of the Mistral Region, my parents owned a weapon shop, my father died months before I was born, and my mother died when I was about two, so I was raised by my sister, but you know all this." Rain said calmly, pausing before continuing, "But what you didn't know is that my sister, Freya, and I had different last name, I was once Rain Crescent."
Rain continued on with his story, "We ran the shop by ourselves, business was minimal, the faunus weren't exactly popular back home. Luckily students at a nearby combat school didn't really have other options when it came to weapon repairs, so we were able to make a living. My sister however wanted to be a huntress. I just wanted to be whatever she wanted to be."
Rain paused as Celes had her hand raised politely, "What was she like?" the girl asked.
Rain smiled fondly as he answered, "She was kind and gentle, You'd never see her wrong anyone, or harm anything. She was a faunus like me, she even had the same hair as I do, she always had it tied in a ribbon, or pushed back with a hairband."
Just then his teammate's looked at Rains hands which were absentmindedly fiddling with the white ribbon tied on his hair. Sensing their curiosity he said, "This is one of her hair ribbons. I wear it to keep her close." His tone was a little sad.
He cleared his throat before returning to recounting his history. "My sister taught me what she knew of sword fighting and weapon forging, as well as how to read, and history. She spent whatever time she didn't spend with me training or studying."
His smile returned briefly, "We lived that way for four years, peacefully, and happy. However when I was eight, everything changed." Rain's face darkened at the end.
"A group of humanity supremacists came to our town. One night they took my sister, and burned her alive. They watched my sweet sister, who never hurt anyone, burn to death, and laughed as she screamed." Rain said calmly, but darkly. His teammates were a little scared, but saddened, they'd never seen him like this.
Celes extended a hand, and placed it on Rain's shoulder. It was a simple gesture, not a lot, but more than enough. His face noticeably lightened before continuing.
"I was beside myself. I was scared, I was sad, but most of all I was angry. I took a knife from the shop and went to the leader of the group's house. When he answered the door I stabbed him over and over again. When I realized he was dead, I ran." Rain said, appearing as if he was lost in his memories.
"I was eight years old, and I was a murderer. I spent the next four years of my life on the run. I lived off of garbage and the kindness of strangers. During this time I often masqueraded around as a girl, people tended to be nicer when they believed I was a lost little girl. Eventually I was found and taken in by the White Fang." Rain said, still almost entranced by his memories, his teammates all sat and listened intently.
"While I was there I began acting like a boy again, I kept the hair though. It reminded me of her. I did some work for the White Fang, eventually a new leader rose to power, one who believed in taking more...aggressive measures." Rain said, carefully choosing his words.
"I had a little experience with a sword, so I volunteered for what would be the first of my contracts. I was tasked with killing a foreman at a dust quarry who abused Faunus workers. I was given a sword, and I left as soon as I could." Rain said simply, as if talking about the weather a week ago.
"To say I killed him would be inaccurate. I butchered him. I sent a message that the Faunus were done being pushed around. The police were unable to find any evidence linking me to the crime, and so the when the White Fang claimed responsibility, I soon found myself taking more and more contracts." Rain continued casually.
"During this time, I became the White Fang's go-to executioner. I developed Benihime as a more effective weapon, as I began encountering security that accompanied higher level targets. The police began referring to me as 'The Ripper' due to my rather...violent method of disposing of my target's I eventually took the pseudonym 'Jack' and before long, I was 'Jack the Ripper'." During this speech Rain picked up his red, chainsaw edged katana, Benihime, gently and ran his hand along the white scabbard as if caressing a baby.
Genuine shock entered his teammate's faces as they heard this. At one point, everyone in Remnant knew about Jack the Ripper, an executioner for the White Fang, and suspected of at least 50 murders.
"I was never caught by the police. I never left survivors, so there were no witnesses. Benihime left little more than piles of meat, so identifying how I killed people was rather difficult. I would accept a contract, leave, kill the target and return. I lived this way for 3 years." Rain said, looking around his teammates, seeing that Citri had a question.
"You were Jack the Ripper?" The surfer asked, he looked almost afraid.
"Yes, I was. Now I'm Rain Nocturne, huntsman in training." Rain said, trying to make it clear that there was more to the story.
"Now, After three years I began to notice something. Nothing was changing. No matter how many people I killed, nothing changed. There was always someone else who had to die for the cause. I began to doubt my work. One day I was given a contract to kill the heiress to some dust company, a girl about a year younger than me. I had killed grown men and women, all guilty of crimes against those they considered lesser to themselves, but I never raised my blade against an innocent, or a child. I was not about to end another life for nothing to change, much less the life of a child. I left." Rain said once again lost in his memories, but Phoenix seemed to pull him out of it.
"You left because you thought nothing was changing? Didn't you feel guilty at all?" The silver haired girl asked, her crimson eyes seemed to bore into the mouse boy
"I only feel guilty about one kill, and that is the first person I killed, the man who murdered my sister. I killed my targets to change society, not for vengeance." Rain said staring back at Phoenix, his tone was not at all confrontational, but he did not waiver.
"Still, you murdered 50 people. Do you not feel anything about it?" She pressed.
"Sometimes people need to die for things to change." Rain said as if quoting a personal doctrine.
"Now where was I? Yes, After leaving, the White Fang sent one of their agents to kill me. They wanted to tie up loose ends. I sent them back his head, well, what was left of it. Needless to say they didn't pursue me." Rain said in the same disturbingly casual tone he had been speaking in.
"I spent the next two years before applying to Beacon honing a more defensive style, improving my knowledge in weapons, and studying. I attended an audition for beacon under a new name, Nocturne, and was accepted into Beacon. You know the rest." Rain said, folding his hands in his lap.
"Why didn't you tell us this?" Celes asked politely clearly struggling to appear calm.
"I thought you'd sleep better if you thought you were in the same room as a bodyguard, rather than a hitman." Rain answered without hesitation, clearly expecting a question like this.
"What was that back in the forest then?" Citri asked, this had been on his mind for a while now, and his two teammates clearly wanted to know the same thing.
"Some people in combat class think that I like fighting. I will dash these rumors to all of you here and now. I don't like fighting. I love it. I try to control my emotions however. When I was The Ripper, I reveled in the bloodshed I wrought. Benihime actually has the phrase, 'No Survivors, No Witnesses' engraved onto her, back in the forest, I showed you how I really feel when I fight." Rain said, fixated on Phoenix, and his partner's reaction to this statement.
"Now, I had planned on telling you all this after graduation anyway. And I'm only telling you because I trust all of you. I trust that all of you will be able to accept that I killed a lot of people, and I don't regret it." Rain said with a tone of finality, as if challenging them.
Pure shock spread across the faces of his three friends and teammates. Even Celes, who for a while seemed to be able to accept this information, looked fairly repulsed by this statement. The other three members of Team ANCY in that moment understood, that they were living with a killer, whose actions brought him no shame.
"I'm going for a walk." Phoenix said, standing up and leaving the room quickly.
Rain had expected this reaction from her. The silver haired girl, had difficulty understanding the truth of who he was, earlier, no doubt after that statement she'd leave.
"Would you kill a person again?" Celes asked, her voice shaking, barely audible.
"Hmm?" Rain said, trying to coax her into asking a bit more definitively.
"Would you kill a human being again?" Celes asked, her tone surprisingly serious.
"If I had to, without hesitation." Rain answered
"I'll go with her." Celes said, seizing the moment to leave the room, to have a chance to think. She had been nowhere near ready to hear him respond like that.
Rain and Citri sat near each other in silence.
"So...that went..." Citri started trying to be supportive, but failing miserably.
"To shit? Yes, rather quickly too." Rain said casually, as if what had just happened didn't bother him in the slightest.
Citri was torn, he himself wanted to leave, but leaving his partner now of all times didn't sit right.
"Citri you can leave. I won't mind." Rain said as if reading his partner's mind.
"What why would I-" Citri began his tone defensive right out the gate.
"Citri, take some time to think on this. I'll be fine." Rain said, encouraging his partner to get some air.
"I.. um have a..um...thing...due. Bye." Citri said leaving the mouse boy alone in the room.
"Typical, he's a terrible liar. Can't say I blame him." Rains muttered to himself as he sat alone on the bed.
"Well girl, it's just the two of us." Rain whispered to Benihime. He stared at the case before drawing the sword and disassembling her.
"Let's get you cleaned up while they're gone." Rain said as he began to take each individual piece of the sword and clean it, down to the last screw.
Phoenix Carson was weathering a storm of emotions. She felt hurt and betrayed. The latter was something she hadn't felt since her mother died. She was left with a useless father, who swore up and down to take care of her, and what did he do?
Nothing. He sat on his ass and left everything to her. She did the cooking, the cleaning, the shopping, the everything. She had to get scholarships because he barely worked. She had to study all the time to be prepared for her classes.
He lied to her. He never lifted a finger to do anything other than eat, sleep, and occasionally work. He didn't take care of them. She did.
Right at this moment she felt betrayed. She and Rain confided in each other. Trusted each other. And now it turns out everything she thought she knew about him was a lie. He was probably playing them all for saps to hide from the cops.
But somewhere in the back of her mind, there was doubt. Rain always stood by them. He helped her in history, when Oobleck threatened to fail her. He helped her maintain her sword, and practice her technique. He kept his idiot partner in line.
Great now she was angry. Her 'leader' was just like her dad. He slacked off, and goofed off, and pretended everything was okay, and just coasted by. Citri only did what he had to do, never anything more. He always had that stupid grin like everything was just a big game. Phoenix believed she should be the leader. She had the best overall grades out of all of them. She worked the hardest. Why was some slacker like him in charge?
She let out her rage and frustration in a growl as she punched a wall in the hallway. Then immediately let out a stream of swear words as she cradled her bruised hand.
Think. Think, think, think. What Citri needed was to...think.
Right.
Rain was a killer. A hired killer. He was a merciless, guiltless murderer. That was the thing though, he was a murderer.
Not anymore. Right?
Aside from graduation, Cirti had never seen that side of him before. For the past year all Citri had seen was a friend.
Someone to trust. Someone to joke with. And laugh with. And have fun with.
Partner, teammate, study helper, food buddy, wingman. Bro. That was Rain. Or, at least, that was Rain now.
No matter how much his mind battled with him, Citri could not bring himself to forget the year of bonding with his best friend. Every time he thought on what Rain had told them, a new memory surfaced.
He killed people.
He taught you swordsmanship.
He tore apart his victims.
You repaid him with surf lessons.
He was merciless.
He got you that girl's number.
He didn't leave witnesses.
You stood by him.
He didn't leave bodies.
He stood by you.
He doesn't feel guilty.
You don't regret a second.
Why?
That was the question that Celes kept on coming back to. Why? Why wasn't he guilty. Why did the boy that had always been so kind towards her suddenly seem like...well, like an animal?
...was that racist? What with him being Faunus and all.
Godammit Celes, not the time.
Why?
Why, why why? It was infuriating her, the question. It angered her knowing that he felt no guilt. It angered her not knowing why that was. It angered her that, in spite of her rage, she had taken a second to consider whether calling him an animal had been fair.
He was a murderer!
And still, still she worried about him. For all the fury building inside of her towards Rain and his nonchalant attitude to the guiltless slaughter of human beings, she couldn't help but feel concerned.
Rain never did anything without reason, and it stood to logic that if he felt no guilt, then there was a reason. And any reason that can make someone overlook a task as horrific as taking a life… Celes was scared by the idea of whatever was going on in Rain's head that had caused him to be so unaffected by his own actions.
More to the point, if he was so uncaring towards what he did, then why stop? Something had kept him from doing it again. And not just leaving the White Fang either, he had actively changed his entire fighting style before entering Beacon. He had gone out his way to avoid his past returning.
Why?
Always with that question.
There was only one place to get answers, as well. No amount of racking her brain and getting angry and worked up would bring Celes any closer to the answers. No. She was going to have to ask Rain. She was going to have to make him bring it all up, all over again just to get some straight answers.
A part of her felt bad about that, whether it showed or not, you don't avoid your past unless you want to leave it behind, and having the ones you trust interrogate you about it couldn't be helpful.
The poor boy. Celes had already gotten worried over the goings on in Rain's mind, and her concern for his mental state would not be helped by her piling on questions.
Just look at her. Outraged at what Rain had told them, and yet Celes still couldn't bring herself to be any less compassionate towards him.
That guiltless, merciless, murdering...brother.
Wow a lot of stuff went down. Rain was apparently a hitman, Celes has father issues, and she takes them out on Citri, and Celes has brother issues? Only time will tell if ANCY can get back together after Rain's reveal. Well let me know what you think about this chapter, about the situation, about the character, or about the weather. Anyway I am Kurt the Mortican, and I hope this laid your troubles, worries, and Fears to rest.
