Chapter 10: An Uncertainty
::::::::::_||_::::::::::

Man, there were more people out and about today than these past five days!

It amazes me how Winry manages to make her way through the huge crowd. Like some sort of assassin...

"Over there!" She yelled as she pointed down an alley.

I heard shouts, actually, we heard shouts. One from Ed, one from Al, and one from a man.

We looked at each other and nodded. Together, we slowly walked down the alley. No rush, wouldn't want to interrupt whatever it was they were talking about.

Finally, we were close enough to hear them perfectly fine. And see them too.

Ed and Al were in a defensive stance. Standing before both of them was an Ishvalan. I stared carefully at the Ishvalan man.

'He has an X-shaped scar on his forehead... He was that guy I saw just a few days ago!' I thought, almost making the catch in my breath noticeable.

That was when Al noticed us.

"Do you remember a couple of Amestrian doctors by the name of Rockbell?" Ed demanded to know from the man.

I don't know why, but hearing this made all of the color on Winry drain away. Her eyes widened and pure shock and fear were the only emotions written on her face.

Al suddenly looked back at Ed. "Wait!" He yelled, warning Ed to stop talking.

"When things were at its worst, they risked their own lives to serve the front treating refugees, your people!" Ed continued, obviously ignoring Al.

'Don't tell me that—' I finally realized why Alphonse was trying to stop Ed.

—"My parents died during the civil war..." Winry said, averting her eyes.

"I-I'm sorry..." I said apologetically, looking at my feet.

'Mine are still alive... Who am I to be self-pitiful? Winry never saw her parents again!' I thought, angry at myself.

"It's fine. They died doing what the worked for. I'm so proud of them," Winry said. The look on her face said the opposite.

Her mouth said that she was proud of them, but the expression on her face said that she still deeply wished that her parents could've come home.—

'They didn't just die, did they!?' I slowly looked at the man, trembling.

'They were killed! By this man!' This realization made me want to grab the gun out my pocket and kill the man.

"Big brother, wait!" Alphonse yelled, practically screaming at his brother.

Ed clenched his fists together tightly and yelled.

"SCAR! DO YOU REMEMBER THE KIND AND LOVING DOCTORS WHO SAVED YOU!? THE ONE'S WHOSE LIVES YOU TOOK!?" He shouted at the man.

"BIG BROTHER!" Al yelled too soon, Winry had already heard.

Dead silence filled the tense air. Ed was looking at Winry, finally realizing what he had just done. Winry was staring at the man, Scar. Both of their faces were pale. Winry was shaking, her face holding nothing but fear.

I had my hands covering my mouth, I was trembling also.

Winry turned to look at Ed now.

"What do you mean, Ed?" Winry asked, her voice shaking and hoarse.

"Don't tell me that this is the man who... killed... my mom... and dad...?" She looked beyond devastated now. She slumped to her knees, trembling violently.

"Why...?" She asked, showing just how much she had wished, no, yearned all these years for her parents to come back. Tears begun to fill her eyes.

"You're not going to deny it...? They didn't do anything to deserve to die, did they...?" Through all of the sadness that showed in her eyes, I also saw a small anger pierce through.

Scar just looked at her, regret in his eyes.

The tears spilled out of Winry's eyes. "Give them back! Give them back you monster!"

I looked at her as she clenched the sides of her head. She was in serious pain.

I saw the gleam of something on the ground and turned to look at it. I felt myself grow pale as the weight of the object in my pocket started to grow unbearably heavy.

What was on the ground was a gun. Right in front of Winry. And I wasn't the only who noticed it.

Ed, Al, and Scar noticed the gun too. "Don't do it, Winry..." Ed said quietly. But none of us could stop her.

Slowly, Winry's hand made it's way to the handgun in front of her.

"Don't do it Winry!" Ed yelled.

She carefully pulled the gun up in front of her and aimed it at Scar, alarming Ed, Al, and I. Scar's face was unreadable.

Winry's finger slowly pulled the trigger.

"NO DON'T!" I yelled, about to jump at Winry and pull the gun away from her, but I stopped when I saw that the weight of just thinking about using the gun scared her. Even if it was to avenge her parents.

"You have every right to shoot me," Scar said abruptly, breaking all silence. "But, once you pull that trigger, I'll consider you an enemy."

My face was twisted into a glare. 'Don't do it Winry. Once you do, you'll be the same as him: a cold-blooded murderer.' I thought, hoping that Winry would just through the gun at the man before us.

"If you think I'll let you hurt one hair on her head—" Ed yelled suddenly, making both my chest and stomach suddenly clench up.

'What the...' I thought, resisting the urge to grab my stomach.

"You'll what?!" Scar demanded.

"You'll kill me?! Go ahead! All of this won't end until one of us is dead!" He yelled loudly, making me tremble.

"But remember this, boy; it was the Amestrians' who shot the first bullet in that war! It was your people!"

I felt myself grow pale.

'That's right.' I realized.

'This man, he's just avenging his people. Everyone he knew is nothing more than a memory, same with Winry. Her parents are also just a memory. And same with me...' I thought, finally seeing how life is.

'Even though Scar's friends and family are gone, he and this world continues to go on. Same with Winry. And Ed and Al. They've lost their parents. And they continue. What about Ola, Vince, and Oswald? Do they miss me like I miss them? Do I endlessly appear in their thoughts like they do to me? Or am I just there? Not even the third or fourth thing on their minds? Am I just a memory?'

I was so engrossed in my own thoughts that I didn't even notice Scar try attacking Winry until Ed pulled my feet from under me.

"AUGH!" I winced in pain as I hit the hard ground with a loud "SMACK!" After that, everything was silent. I sat up slowly and was absolutely amazed at what I saw.

Winry was still on her knees, holding the gun. But, this time, the gun was aimed at the ground. Her left hand, that was holding the gun, was being held down by Ed's hand.

Ed was in front of Winry, guarding her from Scar.

And Scar, his hand was just a few centimeters away from Ed's skull. He looked shocked, even more so than when he saw Winry.

This gave Alphonse an opportunity to knee Scar, but Scar was quick and blocked with his right arm. No matter how quick you are, I could tell that a medal shin hitting your forearm with a strong force was still painful. Scar gave a groan as soon as his arm made contact with Al's leg.

'Those tattoos...' I thought, taking notice to the tattoos on his arm. 'They somehow seem... familiar...'

Alphonse wasted no time to attack Scar. He clapped his hands and hit the wall, transmuting rectangular... were those? Boulders?

Anyway, so suddenly these rectangular boulder-type statue things started to come out of the wall and ground and was aimed at Scar.

But Scar was too quick. He leaped backwards really quickly cleverly dodged every one.

As soon as there was another wall behind him, he slammed his hand onto the wall and created a whole, using the dust as a smoke screen. And he was gone.

"Ed, you idiot!" Al yelled at Ed. Ed said nothing and just stared at Al.

"Urgh... I'm going after Scar!" He said as he turned and jumped onto the square statues.

Ed turned to Winry, who was still in tears and looked guilt stricken.

"It was him," Winry said, still shocked at that fact.

"Let it go," Ed said, holding Winry's hand in his.

"But..." Winry hiccuped, holding her head with her free, right hand.

"He killed my mom and dad..." Winry sobbed.

"Why...? You and Al... I might never be able to see you two... again..." She said, struggling to speak through her labored breathing.

All was quiet besides Winry's sobs.

"Winry," Ed started, "do you remember, in Rush Valley, when you helped that lady deliver her baby? You saved two lives, two."

'What?' I thought, sitting up straightly now.

Ed started loosening the grip Winry had on the gun.

"And you also helped me out. You put me back on my feet with your automail. That was all you."

Finally, the gun dropped out of Winry's hands.

"Winry, your hands weren't meant to take lives," Ed said, quiet enough so I could barely hear it, but just loud enough for the words to be heard.

"They were meant to save them." These words touched both me and Winry, but Winry more.

In one second, Winry clung to Ed and started to bawl. Ed just stayed there, holding her.

And I just sat there, not knowing what to do.

I was angry. Angry at Scar. Angry at the soldier who started the war. Angry at myself for not stopping Winry. Angry at myself for even having a gun.

I was also angry at the sight in front of me. At the sight of Ed holding Winry.

'What is this?' I thought as my stomach clenched up again.

'I don't like this...'
