Even though it's Halloween that's coming close, I got a reuest to do one about a mother.
Mother Earth!
Sometimes her name is spell "Gaia" (which is how it sounds, but the proper spelling is "Gaea".
"No language can express the power, and beauty, and heroism, and majesty of a mother's love. It shrinks not where man cowers, and grows stronger where man faints, and over wastes of worldly fortunes sends the radiance of its quenchless fidelity like a star." ~Edwin Hubbell Chapin
Gaia didn't care much for long speeches, but she understood the meaning behind them. She was the one who had really seen it all. She and her eternally separated husband, Uranus, had seen the creation of everything. Unlike most of her children, Gaia literally had no choice in who would be her eternal mate. It's difficult when your only choice is the bad choice. The being never really thought things through as Gaia did. And while she did have the love and loyalty of her children, she saw that Uranus still had passed down some less than desirable traits into her children.
The goddess of the Earth saw all, mortals and immortals as her children. She made the gods, the gods made the mortals; and same story was done over and over again within her sights. It was Gaia who gave Cronus the twin sickles he used for weapons to defeat Uranus, Gaia merely watched as he was banished. This was how things had to be. She couldn't even miss him, the being that had been the first thing she saw when she opened her eyes. She had work still to do and began to ready the world for her son's rule. But Cronus had turned to his father's darkness, forsaking his brothers. And though Gaea was angry at his selfishness and greed for power, he was still her youngest son. She thought that giving him the choice of bride he wanted would bring out a more favorable nature⦠but her poor Rhea had had to suffer.
Cronus' mother gave him several chances to correct his mistakes, but when it became clear that he was his father's son, Gaia finally decided to act again to save her family. She told Rhea how to hide her baby Zeus, helped Amalthea raise him and began instructing Metis on how to create the poison that would save her grandchildren. And after the war was won, Gaia rested. She let Zeus get away without thanking her that day. The universe had a chaotic war to recover from, she needed a rest, and she felt sure her grandson would find the time to thank her for all she did for his family.
After four thousand years of waiting and finally Gaea decided it was time to act again. Sure her methods may have seemed extreme to her s family. That was how things got done in her day. And in Gaea's eyes, if they bothered to act sooner, her actions would not have been necessary! But just a few hours have passed since then and now she sits on a wooden porch with a group of young heroes who have a great destiny ahead of them. She was embarrassed by the fact that Antius had threatened another mother in the mission she sent him on. She will be thinking twice before sending him on her bidding again, and, to set a good example, she apologized to everyone for his actions. Gaea did act out on a world-scale level, but as a mother she wanted to be fair. She hated the injustice done by her descendants, but she was also always proud to see good prevail, and forgiveness to be given when all was done.
That applies to also her first generation of children. She wishes that Cronus would change his ways and at least not use the weapon she intended for the good of the world to be used for his own agenda. But this one matter where Gaea knows she may not interfere. What is best for the world, which is hers to maintain and look after, is for the destinies of the young heroes to play out. She can name and describe every ancestor, every marriage, every tragedy of every person here at the Mother's day party.
It's not her destiny to stop Cronus. She doesn't mind explaining this when Artemis' girl asks her. Rhea has asked her before, and she has given the same answer. She does this because she loves all of her children. They are all hers. Whether they harm her or take care of her, she is Mother Earth. She can be harsh, strict and seem unfair, but she always gives what she can. And even though she loves him, Gaea will not let Cronus destroy the family she loves.
Gaia is the main Mother in Greek mythology. Even more than Hera or Rhea.
Who should be next? Remember they have to be in the Class of the Titans show.
