The Choices We Make

A/N: I've changed the last few sentences of the last chapter, if you'd want to check that out...

I abruptly pulled away from Gunther, not looking at his face. I pushed a strand of hair behind my ear, and I felt nothing but absolute and gut-wrenching anxiety. How would he react? That was the reason I'd run, among others - I did not want to find out.

The I turned to Gunther, very unwillingly. "There's... there's someone I'd like you to meet," I said, coughing at the end to disguise the wobble of my voice. Then, I gestured over to Jacob, who was still watching us. "Come here, honey, we have company."

He walked over to us, a cheery looking youngster - three years old, four next month. A glimmer of a smile played around my lips. They grow up so fast... His blond unruly hair stuck up at odd angles - he insisted on brushing his hair all my himself and he wasn't very good at it. He smiled at Gunther, his blue eyes sparkling. "Hi, I'm Jacob," He grinned, taking Gunther's hand. "Who're you?" He asked, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion.

"I'm Gunther... an old friend of your moms," I could practically see the quotation marks around 'friend'. "Nice to meet you,"

Gunther held Jacobs hand for a few extra seconds before letting go.

My heart beat so fast, I was absolutely sure they could hear it.

I realized that I had stopped breathing, and started taking slow deep breaths to calm myself. Ha - as if that was possible. Gunther's eyes focused intently on my face now, looking away from Jacob. I felt his eyes burning into mine, drilling through the crazy roar in my head, two blue truth seeking lasers. The question hung in the air between us, out there and inescapable.

Is he mine?

I nodded slowly - I had to. There was no running away from it now.

"Do you like video games?" Jacob asked, breaking our little trance.

"Uh, yeah!" Gunther said, seemingly ignoring me for now. "I love video games,"

Jacob grinned, evidently excited. "I just got Halo 10."

"No kidding? I love that game."

"Cool," Jacob grabbed his arm and led him into the house, talking animatedly about the latest level he'd reached.

I exhaled a breath I didn't know I'd been holding. I guess that went well - for a start. It was obvious he'd have a billion questions for me later. As I walked into the house, I heard their animated shouts.

"Head shot,"

"Sniper tower."

"Sweet!"

I smiled, and walked towards my house.

The next chapter will be longer...
