Bunny was in her room, getting ready for bed, when there was a rapping at her door. Bunny opened her door to find Buttercup with a tight look on her face. She was rubbing her arm.
"Hey," Buttercup replied in a quiet tone.
Bunny smiled warmly at her sister. "Hey girl, back from your date with Rufus already? Did you have fun?" she asked, not noticing the bleak look on her face.
"Um, yeah. Look," Buttercup looked around, as if making sure no one was listening, then looked back at Bunny with urgency. "Can I talk to you?"
Bunny, finally catching on, moved to the side so Buttercup could come into her room. "Yes, of course. You know that I'm always here for you," she closed her door and they made their way to Bunny's bed, sitting down. Bunny had a look of worry. "Tell me what's wrong."
Buttercup's features turned to one of uncertainty. "It's not that something's wrong, more like it's something I feel weird about," she bit her lip. Bunny stayed wuiet, signaling for Buttercup to continue. She took a deep breath. "Well," she stopped, contemplating. "Rufus asked me to be his girlfriend," Bunny's eyes widened. "and I said yes," Buttercup looked at her sister, waiting for her to say something.
After a moment of silence, Bunny staring at nothing and Buttercup anticipating what she would say, Bunny spoke up. "Well that's good, isn't it? Don't you like him?" Bunny asked with a confused expression.
"Yeah I do, but what I'm telling you is that I feel weird about the whole situation and I don't know why," she raised her hands for emphasis.
Bunny crossed her legs and held her head with a fist. "Hmm," she pondered. She raised her head. "Well maybe it's because this is your first boyfriend and you're nervous, and maybe you had hoped it would be Butch? To be honest, I think it's just nerves. I mean, that's how I felt when I got my first boyfriend, then after a while I began to relax," she told Buttercup. She put a hand on her hot-headed sister, patting her. "Just give it time," she smiled comfortingly. "I give it two weeks tops until you start feeling comfortable again and if it doesn't change by then, you could always break up with him and tell him that you're not ready for a relationship," she suggested.
Buttercup nodded. "Yeah, you're right. Alright, well thanks for listening and giving me advice," she got up, heading for the door.
"No problem. That's what your family and friends are for, to help you with things, as well as God," Bunny said. "Oh and Buttercup," she called before her sister left the room. Buttercup stopped and looked at her, questioningly. "No matter the situation or what people tell you, if you need to talk to someone you can always count on me."
Buttercup smiled at her, muttering a 'thanks' as she left to her room for the night.
Bunny had been right about the whole two weeks thing; actually it was more like a week when Buttercup started to feel comfortable about dating Rufus. She didn't know why she worried in the first place.
Rufus was a good boyfriend. He took her on dates, showered her with gifts, tutored her if she needed it and they had long talks on the phone. Buttercup never thought she would find a great boyfriend.
He's so sweet! Buttercup thought, looking down at their entwined hands as Rufus walked her to class. She couldn't be any happier. She smiled happily when they came to a stop in front of her class. She looked up into blue eyes that mesmerized her so much. "Thanks for walking me to class," she took his other hand in hers.
He smirked at her, a look she liked most on him. "No problem," he flickered his eyes to her lips. "See you after school?"
She gave him an apologetic look. "Can't. I'm gonna be busy."
"Alright then," he shrugged it off. "See you at school tomorrow," he leaned down to kiss her.
"Boom!" Buttercup shouted as she used Sindel's superscream to finish Reptile off. She threw the remote down and raised her arms in victory. "I showed you, son!" she yelled, jerking her elbows back.
"Sindel wins," the voice from the video game said, accompanied by a laugh from Sindel.
Butch rolled his eyes, a side smile on his face. "Whatever Butterdumb," he teased. "You only beat me once," he held up a finger.
She got in his face. "Yeah, but I still beat you!" she patted herself on the back, going back to her original position of sitting cross-legged. She grinned widely at her victory.
"Oh yeah?" Butch cocked an eyebrow. "Let's play another round and see if you can beat me this time."
"Nah," Buttercup replied. "I'm bored of that already."
"You're such a freakin' liar!" Butch pointed a finger at her. "You just don't want to get beat again after you managed to win one time," he narrowed his eyes.
She gave a snooty face, crossing her arms. "Whatever you want to believe Butch."
Butch's eye twitched in irritation then he sighed in defeat. "Fine. What else do you want to do?" he leaned back on his hands and she stood up.
"Mm... " she said, thinking. "What about we just go to the park, I guess?" she suggested.
He shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly. "Yeah I guess."
When they arrived at the park, they sat on the swings, talking. "Can you believe school's almost over?" Buttercup asked, twisting while she swung, kicking Butch a few times. ("Ow," he swatted at her foot. "Whoops, sorry," she said, not sorry at all.)
"Yeah, I can," he replied. "This year went by pretty fast," he looked off into the distance, an absent look in his eye.
"Yeah.. "she trailed off. She looked down at the ground, cheerlessly. "We're already gonna be Seniors then we'll be out of high school before we know it," a small smile appeared on her face as she looked at Butch from the corner of her eye.
"Mhm," was his reply.
They continued talking until it got late and decided to go home. They had school tomorrow, after all, and Blossom would be angry if she got home later than her curfew.
Four weeks passed leaving around three months until school was over and Spring break was approaching fast. Buttercup was not only happy about that, but also because tomorrow would be a month since her and Rufus have been going out. Another thing she was excited about was that today was Friday.
Buttercup looked at the clock, mentally urging the clock to pass the five minutes that were left of school. She groaned silently as it seemed that the history teacher dragged the lecture on.
"Mr. Estes," a student raised his hand.
"Yeah," he put his hands on his hips, nodding at the student to continue.
"So wait, I still don't get the difference between democrat and republican," he said.
Everyone groaned. "What?" the student raised his hands. Mr. Estes had just explained it! Nobody felt like hearing his lecture again. Luckily, that didn't happen.
"Boy, you really are a doofus," Mr. Estes said. "Hey Sassy, do me a favor and smack Adrian for me, would 'ya?" Sassy smirked evily as she leaned forward on her desk and smacked the kid on the back of the head. With a yelp of pain, Adrian rubbed the back of his head. Oh how Sassy loved when Mr. Estes allowed her to do such things to students that she wanted to do to them anyway. She liked Mr. Estes as a teacher in general, but even more when he gave her permission to do that. "Thank you."
"My pleasure," Sassy leaned back.
"Anyway, I'm not going to explain it again. We're out of time anyway," he said just as the bell rang. "See you Monday everybody. Peace," he said as the students packed their belongings and left.
Butch and Buttercup would be hanging out today. She headed to the parking lot and met him at his car.
"Hey Butterbutt," he called out to her.
She rolled her eyes at the nickname. "'Sup loser," she threw back.
He smirked as they got into the car and turned on the ignition. "I'm gonna drop you off at your house first and then I'm going to my house to change," he told her. "I suggest you do the same 'cause where I'm taking you," he gestured at her outfit. "That won't look good on you."
"What's wrong with this?" she asked, offended.
"Nothing's wrong with it. Listen to what I say. I said that it won't look good where I'm taking you. Neither will mine, that's why I'm going home to change."
Buttercup puckered her lip. "Well, where are we going?"
"Dancing?" Bubbles and Bunny asked in surprise.
Buttercup nodded.
"I never knew he danced," Bunny commented as she did Buttercup's hair.
Bubbles helped Buttercup pick out an outfit for her little hangout with Butch. He wasn't taking her to a ball or anything like that. He was just going to take her to a teen club. "Yeah I know. It's also kinda weird that... " Bubbles trailed off.
"What?" Buttercup cocked an eyebrow, looking at her in the mirror.
"No, nothing. Anyway, do you want to wear shorts or pants?" she changed the subject.
"Pants," Buttercup answered.
"Alright, your hair's done," Bunny turned off the curler.
Buttercup stood up from the chair and walked over to her bed to change her clothes. Bubbles decided on a pair of skinny jeans with a crop top, a jean jacket and ballet flats. Bubbles did her makeup simply and finished when there was a knock at the front door.
"Bye. See you," Buttercup headed downstairs and out of the house.
When they entered 'Noad Ultamania', they were greeted by the faint smell of sweat hitting their noses. It wasn't that crowded yet, considering how late it was and for a Friday?! Buttercup spotted mainly teenagers and not many adults- unless they were working; hence the name 'Noad- No Adults -Ultamania'. She eyed the venue, looking everywhere. Overall, it was a cute little place.
She felt a nudge on her arm and turned to see Butch looking at her."What do you want to do? Dance, eat, sit and talk or sing?"
She made a face. "Not sing. I hate singing," she looked at the sitting area. "and I don't really want to just sit and talk right now, so I guess let's dance," she shrugged her shoulders, walking to the dance floor. He followed her closely behind with a weird look in his eye.
Even though Buttercup didn't like dancing, she knew how to thanks to Blossom teaching- forcing -her, Bunny and Bubbles. She knew how to tango, ballroom dance, hip hop and freestyle.
Butch knew hip hop and ballroom. He taught himself when he was in eighth grade, though he never joined a dance class.
Just as they got onto the dance floor, a slow song came on. He put both hands on her hips but she grabbed them and put them on her mid-section while putting hers on his shoulders. She had a humorous look on her face when she saw his questioning one. "I have a boyfriend remember? I don't think that would be proper."
He felt like rolling his eyes but refrained from doing so, instead letting his drift to the side as he muttered, "Oh yeah." He felt a little jealous that she had a boyfriend, but he would never admit that out loud.
He spun them around, leading her and keeping her from running into anyone else. Because of the lack of room, they had to keep their movements small, only allowing them to sway back and forth. Buttercup had to admit he danced pretty good.
"You're a pretty good dancer," she voiced.
He smirked. "You're not so bad yourself."
"Where'd you learn how to dance?"
"I taught myself and you?"
"Blossom taught me and my sisters when we were seven."
They danced for a few hours until they got hungry. Panting and sweating, they made their way to the bar, Buttercup unaware of their entwined hands. Sitting next to each other on the stools, they ordered and began talking.
"Dude, I'm sooo tired!" she breathed in heavily, chuckling and face flushed.
"Yeah me too. We danced for like, what, two hours? I'm beat," he said, equally out of breath and sweating. "I mean you were dancing way faster than me, I couldn't even catch up," he smirked.
She smirked. "Dude, isn't that your girlfriend?" she picked up with her superhearing.
"What is she doing with that guy?" someone else asked.
Buttercup turned, seeking out the voices and spotted Rufus with a group of his friends. He had a look of hurt plastered on his face.
"I'll be right back Butch," she made her way towards her boyfriend who started walking away from her. "Rufus, wait," she called out to him. She grabbed him by the hand and he turned to her.
"What Buttercup?" he huffed out.
"Rufus, it's not wh- "
"No need for an explaination Buttercup," he smiled, almost bitterly. "It's ok. Go ahead and have fun. I'll talk to you later when you have time for me," with that he took off.
Buttercup felt a twinge of pain but she didn't know why. What was wrong with hanging out with her best guy friend? She walked back to the bar in a mixture of sadness, guilt and uncertainty.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothin'," she muttered as the food came. She had lost her appetite and wasn't really hungry, but ate it nontheless because that would be a waste of food.
"Do you want to dance again after this?"
"No. I just want to go home," she mumbled through a mouthful of food.
When Buttercup went back to school on Monday, after trying to reach him all of the weekend without success, she went to Rufus' locker to wait for him. Not long after, she spotted him walking down the hall.
"Hi," she greeted him, rubbing her arm.
"Hey," he began opening his locker.
After a moment of silence, Buttercup opened her mouth to speak.
"Buttercup," he said her name, staring into his locker with his hand holding onto the door.
"Y-yeah?"
He sighed. "We need to talk," he looked at her from the corner of his eye.
She felt panic rise up within her. "You're not breaking up with me, are you?"
"No. Listen," he faced her, a serious look on his face. "I don't mean to sound rude, but if we're going to work out you need to stop hanging out with that guy," he furrowed his eyebrows.
She was dumbfounded and anger began to rise up. "What? Why?!" she demanded.
"Because I know you had feelings for him, Buttercup and I know you still do- "
"No I don- "
"I know you guys held hands that day, Buttercup. Don't lie to me and tell me you didn't because I saw it with my own eyes," he raised his voice just slightly, but he hadn't yelled yet.
Buttercup thought back to last Friday, replaying the events in her mind. Then she remembered and her eyes grew big. She had been holding hands with him but didn't understand why she didn't do anything about it at the time."Oh my gosh," she whispered.
"Yeah."
"I don't know why I let that happen," she breathed.
"Because like I said, you still have feelings for him but you don't realize it, that's why you need to stop talking with him," he said. "At least for a while. Besides, you don't see me hanging around with girls, do you?" he added, turning back to his locker.
She bit her lip, unsure what to respond. He smiled with a knowing look, but she didn't see it.
Later that day, Buttercup was lying on her bed doing her Geometry homework when her notification ringer went off. She checked her messages. A text from Butch.
Hey. You want to hangout this Saturday?
She felt nervous as she read the message and typed back her reply. Sorry I can't. I'm gonna be busy.
Her stomach churned as she waited for his reply. What felt like hours were only minutes when her phone rang again.
Alright then. So what are you doing?
I'm doing homework right now so I'll text you later. She felt sadness bubble up as she sent the message.
Ok...see 'ya.
She never replied back and went to doing her homework again. She sighed in sadness. What was she doing?
"Buttercup!" Blossom's voice yelled, accompanied with the sound of her stomping up the stairs.
"Here we go," Buttercup muttered under her breath.
Her door slammed open and in came an angry Blossom with a nervous looking Bubbles on her heels. "What were you thinking?!" Blossom demanded, looking outraged.
"What?" Buttercup asked, a little annoyed.
"Don't get me wrong. I like Butch, I really do, but going to a club with him when you have a boyfriend?!"
"Bubbles!" Buttercup stood up from her bed, clenching her fists. "What the heck?!"
"I'm sorry Buttercup. I had to!" Bubbles apologized.
"I trusted you and you went and told Blossom?!"
Bubbles had a pained look on her face.
Blossom stood in front of her almost protectively. "Don't get upset at her for telling me something that I needed to know about! You need to fix this situation this insta-"
"I already did!"
"Good," Blossom pulled Bubbles out of the room. "And next time think twice before you do something so idiotic!" she called out.
Buttercup threw herself onto her bed and put a pillow over her face, screaming into it. She couldn't believe Bubbles. She trusted her! "I just won't tell any of them anything anymore," she said to herself.
Days went by and Butch would text her or call her to ask her to hangout. Or he would just want to talk and every time she either ignored his calls and texts or would tell him that she was busy. Since they didn't have any classes together this year, it was pretty easy to avoid him.
It got to the point where he would only message her once a week instead of daily to talk to her. If she thought about it too much, she'd start to feel upset. But she had to get over Butch... for Rufus. Besides, he was right. If he stopped hanging out with girls then she needed to stop hanging out with guys. Especially guys she used to- or has, actually -feelings for.
She put an earphone in one of her ears and put her playlist on 'shuffle'. She sat under a tree near the school parking lot, playing a game on her phone as she waited for Rufus. He was taking her to watch a movie and they were going to dinner afterwards.
A few minutes had passed when she heard footsteps in the grass. She turned toward the sound, looking up at Rufus. She smiled. "Hey."
"Ready to go?" he asked her, helping her up.
"Yup," she exited out of the game, going to her playlist.
He looked at her phone. "What 'cha listening to?"
"Dubstep."
He made a look of disgust. "Ew. You like that junk?"
"It's not junk."
"Buttercup, it sounds like they just threw a bunch of random sounds together and they said, 'Wala! We have a new genre of music!" he snapped his fingers. "Not only that, you can't even understand most of what they say."
Buttercup chose not to reply as she got into his car.
"So, Spring is in two weeks and I'm going to hangout with my best friends and sisters. Do you want to come?" she asked as the waiter brought the food. She took a drink of her soda.
"Where are you guys going?" he raised an eyebrow.
"Mmm," she puckered her lip. "We're basically gonna just go eat somewhere."
"When and what time?"
"Sometime during spring and around seven."
"Sure."
"Alright cool," she moved her hair out of her face. Her hair grew long too fast. "Ugh, I need to cut my hair again," she muttered.
"Well I like it long," Rufus stuck a forkful of food into his mouth. "It makes you look more feminine and if I thought you were pretty with short hair, you're even more so with long," he complimented.
She blushed. "T-thank you." Maybe she would keep it long.
Two days until Spring break. Buttercup sighed in relief as she thought about that. She needed a break. Butch had finally got the message and had completely stopped trying to contact her. She would stress out whenever she would think about him, but like before, she would distract herself with music, which she was doing right now.
Again, she was waiting for Rufus to go on their date. When she heard him coming, she quickly turned off her music and put it in her bag. She smiled when he came up to her. "Hey. Ready for Spring break? It's in two days," she took his hand that he offered her and was pulled up. She dusted the grass off her butt as they began to walk to his car.
He kissed her cheek. "Yup. I am. But that means it's one week closer to me graduating and not being in school with you anymore," he gave her a sad look.
"It's ok. We're still going to hangout, aren't we?"
"Yeah."
"Five minutes, girls!" Blossom yelled from her room.
"Ok," they all yelled back.
Buttercup had been ready for the past ten minutes and was sitting on her bed, playing a game on her phone. Someone knocked on the door. "Come in," she called.
"Hey," Bunny smiled, sitting on her bed. "So is Rufus going to come?"
"Yeah," Buttercup replied, still playing.
"Girls! Time to go!" Blossom yelled. "I'll be waiting for you outside," she opened the front door and found Rufus standing there, fist in the air about to knock.
"Oh hi, Blossom," he smiled.
"Hello Rufus," she looked upstairs. "Uh, Buttercup's upstairs. Buttercup!" she called out to her. "Rufus is here! She'll be right down Rufus. I'll see you at the resturant," she took off towards the sidewalk.
Buttercup came rushing downstairs. "Ok. Let's go," she pecked him on the cheek and closed the door behind her, heading to his car.
The Lutonium sisters were already there by the time the PowerPuff Girls and Rufus arrived.
"What took you so long?" Syco cocked an eyebrow at Blossom.
"Sorry. My sisters and I were still fixing ourselves up," Blossom explained, ushering the girls and Rufus to sit down. They obliged.
"Mm," Syco responded. "Well, luckily the waiter has not arrived yet."
As if on cue, the waiter appeared. "Hello ladies," he spotted Rufus and awkwardly added, "and gentleman. What can I get you all to drink?" He wrote down their drinks and continued. "Alllright and is everybody ready to order?"
"Could we have a little more time please?" Blossom asked, smiling in embarrassment.
"Of course Miss. I'll come back in a few with your drinks," he said, taking off.
"You, eyebrow piercing man," Syco looked at Rufus. "Introduce yourself at once," she commanded.
"Um yes 'mam," his voice cracking a little. Another girl he was afraid of. Even though Syco and her sisters knew who he was, he didn't know they knew him. He's never met them. She didn't like him even more ever since she found out that he prohibited Buttercup from talking to Butch. She almost- almost -dispised him. Rufus cleared his throat. "Hello, my name is Rufus Thompson," he looked each and every Lutonium girl in the eye, his eyes lingering on Sassy longer. Sassy narrowed her eyes at him.
"Hello Rufus. My name is Syco Lutonium and these are my sisters," she gestured a hand towards each of them. "Sapphire, Sassy and Star."
"Hi, nice to meet you," Sapphire smiled sweetly... too sweet, in fact.
He gave a smile of his own, slightly creeped out by her too. What was with all these girls creeping him out?
"Oh, you're the guy that Butc- "
Sapphire clamped a hand over Star's mouth, still smiling sweetly. She laughed, a sweet sound to people who didn't know her but people who knew her knew it was otherwise.
Shut up, idiot! Sassy mentally told Star, widening her eyes at her.
"Sorry," Star forced out.
Rufus looked at each girl with a strained smile. He could see a hint of irritation present on Sapphire's face as she continued to smile. Ok, maybe she took the prize for having the creepiest smile.
"Ok," Buttercup took a deep breath, putting her hands in her lap and looking at Rufus. "Let's decide what to eat, shall we?"
After the waiter came back with their drinks, they ordered the food and continued to talk even when the food arrived- after giving thanks, of course. At first the tension in the atmosphere was thick, but as the minutes went on, it loosened up and they began to enjoy themselves... well, everyone but the Lutoniums whom were going to keep an eye on him.
"Hey Star, I'll be back. I'm going to the bathroom," Sassy whispered to her, getting up.
"Ok," Star nodded distractedly, enjoying her food.
Rufus noticed her leaving and decided to make his move. He got up, leaning into Buttercup. "Hey, I need to go to the restroom."
"Mmk," she replied before continuing to talk to Bubbles.
Sapphire's eyes followed Rufus and she leaned in to whisper to Syco. "Aren't you going to do something?" she asked in an urgent tone.
Syco was nonchalant as she whispered back, "Sassy can take care of herself," then an evil look played onto her features. "Let him find out for himself what she can and will do to him," then, just as quickly as it came, the look disappeared off her face and she went back to eating.
Sapphire wasn't content and she turned to look where they had headed to with a worried expression. She knew what her sister- not just Sassy, her other sisters and herself included -were capable of, but she still worried about them because that's just how she was. She knew Syco would pull her back down if she tried to follow them so all she could do was keep her superhearing on.
Sassy finished drying her hands and exited the bathroom. She knew he had followed her, thanks to her superhearing, but acted like she didn't since he didn't know that they had super powers. She was going to strive to keep it that way until the time came.
"Oh, I'm so sorry!" she said as she bumped into him. "I didn't know you were there," she lied easily.
He smirked. "No problem, babe. May I say that you are hot."
She narrowed her eyes at him. "Excuse me?" she faked. Of course she knew he was going to say that. She couldn't read his mind but she and her sisters already had suspicions about him and this just confirmed it. "I believe you're dating my best friend," she looked at him innocently. "Are you not?" then her face hardened. "Besides, I have a boyfriend so get lost jerk," she headed back to the table.
He fumed as she muttered a vulgar name aimed towards her. She was so close to turning back around and giving him the beating of a lifetime, but decided against it since that would give her away.
As she sat back down, Sapphire's voice hit her mind. What a douchebag! In all my life, I've never heard someone call any of us that.
Sassy tried to calm her baby sister down. Yeah I know, but don't sweat it. He'll get what's comin' to him.
"Hello?" Buttercup answered her cell.
"Hey. Where are you?" a strained voice on the other line asked. It was Rufus.
"I'm with my sisters at the mall. Why?"
"Because I went to your house to surprise you and you weren't there," he started to sound angry. "I don't like that. I got worried. Next time you need to call me before you go anywhere. What if something happened to you?"
"Rufus, I can take care of my- "
"I know you can but I'm your boyfriend and I worry. You don't want me to worry do you?" he asked.
"No."
"Ok. Then I expect for you to call me before you go somewhere so I'll know."
She sighed. "Yeah ok."
"You know I love you, don't you?"
"Yeah... " her heart skipped a beat. The first time he had told her was a week or two after Spring break. She felt completely happy when he told her and she still did.
"Do you love me?"
"Of course I do."
"Ok. I'll talk to you later. Bye," he hung up.
About a month has passed, leaving only around a month and a half before school ended.
"Rufus?" a voice asked.
Buttercup turned to face Bunny and nodded. "Yeah."
"What did he want?"
"Oh, you know. To tell me he loves me," she lied, playing with her charm bracelet. Bunny eyed her suspiciously.
Rufus had been texting her and calling her every few hours these past few weeks to ask her where she was and what she was doing. Bunny didn't need to know that though. Nobody did.
"Hmm. Weird 'cause that was like the tenth time he's called you just to tell you that he 'loves you'," she air quoted with her fingers.
"He cares for me," Buttercup said defensively.
Bunny put her hands up in surrender. "Ok, ok. I'm not saying anything," she said. "Anyway. Let's go find Bloss and Bubs."
They wound up finding them at Claire's. Blossom was looking for a new bow.
"Hey girls!" Bubbles smiled. "Sorry we're taking so long. I'm actually not the cause of it this time," she laughed.
"Picking out the perfect bow requires patience," Blossom piped up.
Buttercup scoffed. "They all look the same," she cocked her hip to the side, arms crossed.
Blossom swallowed down her pride and chose to ignore her. Someone had to be the mature one around here and if it wasn't Blossom then who was it going to be? Blossom finally spotted one and bought it.
Satisfied, she and her sisters walked out of Claire's. "Are you girls hungry?" she asked.
"Yeah," Buttercup said.
"Yup." "Aha." The other two replied.
"Alright. Let us go eat then, shall we?"
Buttercup's phone buzzed. She picked up her phone. "Hello?"
"Hey Buttercup. Want to go out today?" Rufus asked.
It was Friday. About two more weeks and it'd be one month closer to the end of school. Buttercup really anticipated summer vacation. "Sure," she answered. "Where are we going?"
"You want to go dancing?"
"Sure. I guess."
"Alright then. Pick you up in a few."
She hung up and began getting ready. Since it was already May and it was getting hot, she decided to wear shorts. She put her hair up in a high ponytail and curled the pony. She was ready within minutes and layed down on her bed, playing her phone game as she waited for him to get there.
Twenty-five minutes later, they arrived at the club that she went to with Butch, 'Noad Ultamania'. Ugh, the memories flooded back into her mind and she wondered why he brought her to this one specifically.
"Why'd you bring me to this one?" she voiced.
"Because this is my favorite one and it's one of the less popular ones. I don't want to be crowded too much," he told her. "Are you hungry?"
"Not really."
"Ok. Do you want to just snack on something while we sit and talk?"
"Yeah, sure."
He led her to the bar, ordered their drinks and food and then led her to the sitting area, drinks in hand. "So," he put an arm around her shoulder and she leaned in, resting her head on his shoulder. "We've been together for almost four months now," he looked down at her.
She looked up at him with a smile. "I know. I can't believe it. That's really awesome."
He nodded. "Yup. Do you want to do something special on our five month anniversary or do you want to wait until we've been together for a year?"
"Yeah, a year because I think that's more special than five months."
Rufus nodded. "I'm gonna go check to see if the food's out," he got up, heading to the bar.
After they ate a slow song came on and Buttercup got up, facing Rufus. She pulled on his hand to make him stand up. "Let's dance," she smiled.
He allowed her to drag him to the dance floor. She put his hands on her waist, wrapping her arms around his neck. They began to sway back and forth and continued to talk. "I'm glad I met you," she told him.
"I'm glad I didn't give up on you. You were mean to me when we first met," he chuckled.
She blushed. "Yeah I know. Sorry."
"Don't be," he kissed her. "That's just how you were." She smiled. "Besides, we're together now and that's all that matters."
"Yeah," she muttered.
Throughout the night they danced, ate and talked. At one point when they were dancing Rufus' hands began to lower very dangerously and she stopped him, telling him that she didn't like that. He apologized to her and didn't try it again. They continued to dance late into the night.
"Hey Butter, we want to know if you want to come with us to the bowling alley?" Bunny asked.
Buttercup was laying on her bed, watching TV and lifted her head to look at her sister better. She thought about it, then agreed.
"Ok, then get dressed. We're leaving in around twenty minutes," Bunny left her room.
Buttercup picked her phone up, dialed a number and let it ring.
"Hey Butterfly, what's up?" Rufus asked on the other line.
"Hey. Just calling to let you know that I'm going to hangout with my sisters today at the bowling alley. We'll be there for a while so I don't think I'll be free today," she said into the reciever.
It was quiet for a while until he said, "Ok."
"Yeah so I'll call you later, ok?"
"Yeah ok."
"Mmk. Bye."
"Bye."
She hung up the phone and began to get dressed.
"So how are you and Rufus doing, Buttercup?" Blossom asked after they arrived at the bowling alley.
"Good. It's almost going to be four months since we've been together," Buttercup answered, putting the bowling shoes on.
"That is very nice," Blossom nodded.
"Yeah-how are you and Brick?" Buttercup changed the topic.
"Oh wonderful. It will be two years in October," she smiled in a daze.
"Really? Boomer and I are going to be two years when Senior year starts. I thought you and Brick got together sooner, Bloss?" Bubbles raised an eyebrow.
"No," Blossom shook her head. "We got together in October."
"Oh."
"The only one who doesn't have a boyfriend at the moment is Bunny," Buttercup said. They all turned to Bunny who had a red face and looked down at her feet. "Right, Bun- "
"It just happened ok?" she blurted out.
"What happened? What are you even talking about?"
Bunny let out an irritated noise. "Buddy and I are together!" she covered her face with her hands.
Her sisters just stared until Buttercup raised an eyebrow in confusion. "Wait, what? I thought you said you hated him?"
"I thought I did, but then he kissed me and then I kissed back and then-ugh!" she turned more red, trying to burrow her face in her arms.
"When did this happen?" Blossom asked.
"Last night," she squeaked out. "We were walking together and then he just layed it on me," she raised her head.
"I see," Blossom put a hand on her chin.
"Yeah," Bunny nodded. "Then he asked me to be his girlfriend and I said yes. What's wrong with me?"
"I see nothing wrong with you. Bubbles and I are dating RowdyRuffs as well," Blossom commented.
"Yeah, but Buddy is dumb! Dumber than Boomer," Bunny whined.
"Hey!" Bubbles glared at her.
"As I see it, you said yes because you like him and you wish to not admit it," Blossom noted. "Just give it a chance. He seems like a fine gentleman."
Bunny nodded. "Yeah, I guess so."
"Alright then. Let's get to bowlin'," Buttercup stood up.
The next day Buttercup was slumpt on the couch watching TV. Her sisters went to hangout with Sassy's sisters and the Professor was at work. She was still in her pjs when there was a knock at the door and she went to answer it.
"Rufus?" she asked in surprise. What was he doing here so early?
"Hey," he kissed her. "I came here to see you. Is something wrong?"
Buttercup shook her head. "No,no. It's just you've never came this early."
He chuckled. "Sorry. I just couldn't wait to see you and I need to talk to you."
She looked down and then realized he was still standing outside and she had the door open. "Sorry. Come in," she took off to sit back on the couch. He closed the door and followed suit. "So, what'd you want to talk to me about?"
"Before I say anything may I say, you look really beautiful right now," he told her.
She blushed. "Really?"
He nodded. "Absolutely."
"But I'm in my pajamas and have my hair up in a bun."
"I don't care. You look really natural. You have natural beauty."
She blushed more. "Thanks."
"No prob. Anyway...So prom's coming up next Saturday and I wanted to know if you'd go with me?" he asked.
She lit up. She wasn't big on dances but it was the thought of spending time with him that counted. "Yes!" she threw her arms around him. "I would love to go to prom with you."
"Four more weeks of school, guys," Ms. Beeson announced. "Meaning those of you with D's and F's only have two weeks until second semester ends to get those grades up. It also means that we will be having our final in two weeks on Thursday. So I'm giving you all of class time until then to study," she said. "Now that I got that out of the way, the TA will be handing out the study guides and you'll also have to study all of your notes. Good luck and if you have any questions, I'll be at my desk."
"Yay. Finals," Buttercup faked enthusiasm.
"I don't like finals as much as you do, but we have to do it," Bunny said.
"Oh and one more thing," Ms. Beeson said. "Go ahead and study with your partners."
Bunny turned to Buttercup. "Want me to quiz you to see how much you know and then switch?"
"Sure."
"Yay! We get to have more of Buttercup's desserts!" Bubbles clapped her hands when lunchtime came around.
"What have you prepared this time?" Blossom asked.
"Key lime pie, chocolate pudding and chocolate chip cookies," Buttercup brought them out as she named them.
Bubbles eyes lit up and her mouth watered. "Mmm. All so delicious."
"For Bubbles, I made her cucumber sandwiches, a fruit salad and a smoothie," Bunny smiled, handing the food to Bubbles.
Bubbles smiled thankfully. "Thank you, Bunny. You're so sweet!"
"And for the rest of us I decided to make ham and cheese sandwiches with a small chicken salad and baked bread."
"I made tea for all of us," Bubbles announced.
"And I brought the utensils, plates and napkins," Blossom muttered, ashamed she couldn't cook.
"Like always," Buttercup joked and laughed when Blossom narrowed her eyes at her.
"Don't be rude," Blossom huffed out.
"Hey, so since tomorrow's prom, I'm going with my sisters to pick out dresses today," Buttercup looked at Rufus.
He nodded. "Alright."
"Ok, I'll see you later," she took off to her house.
From there, her and her sisters took off to the mall. Their first stop was Macy's. They made their way around the mall, going into stores that were known to have dresses and wound up finding some that they liked at the last store they went into.
After buying their dresses, they sat at one of the tables in the food court and talked. The day went by in a flash and before they knew it, it was already nine. They took off home and went to bed. Tomorrow would be a special day.
They arrived at the venue, arm in arm and Buttercup began to search for her friends and family. She spotted them at the table near the dance floor and pulled Rufus along. They sat down next to each other, Sassy on Buttercup's other side while Bunny was on Rufus'.
"Hey!" Sassy greeted Buttercup over the loud music. "You look so pretty!"
Buttercup smiled. "Thank you, so do you," her eyes flickered around, looking at everyone sitting at their table.
"Didn't want to come," Sassy said, stunning Buttercup and she flushed red, having been caught.
"Oh, I wasn- "
"I know you were looking for him. Don't lie," Sassy said. "He didn't feel like coming."
"Oh," Buttercup felt sad.
Sooner or later, Buttercup started to feel happy again. Her friends making her laugh, dancing with Rufus and the group. The night seemed to go on for a long time and when it came to an end, everyone was exhausted. It had been a very nice experience for Buttercup and she was glad she went.
Sassy flickered her eyes at Buttercup for the umpteenth time these past few days. Buttercup had been coming to school lately dressed in sweatpants, a t-shirt and her hair up in a bun. To top it off, she had her hair almost as long as Sassy's. Buttercup hated long hair! What was up with that?
Sassy was trying to figure out a way to talk to her without Rufus or her sisters being there. She needed to speak with Buttercup alone. But how could she when she was always busy either hanging out with her sisters or Rufus? They hadn't talked in a while- just the two of them -and it bugged the heck out of Sassy. She needed to talk to her and she needed to do it soon.
"Why are you looking through my phone?" Buttercup asked, eyebrow raised.
Rufus looked up at her. "Just looking, why?"
"You shouldn't be looking through my stuff without permission," she tried to snag it. He held it out of her reach. "Give it Rufus."
"Why? It sounds to me like you've got something to hide. Is that true, Buttercup?" he accused.
She had a bewildered look. "What? No-why-look, I just don't want you looking through it, all right?"
"I don't see what the problem is if you've got nothing to hide," he continued.
She let out a frustrated noise. "You know what? Fine, whatever. I don't want you thinking I'm cheating on you or anything so go ahead, but hurry and give it back to me 'cause I'm going somewhere in a little bit."
"And where's that?" he asked.
"To hangout with my best friend."
"Ok, Buttercup. I want to be honest with you. I need to tell you something important," Sassy began. "Rufus hit on me."
Buttercup furrowed her eyebrows. "What? When?"
"That time we hungout during Spring break."
"And you waited until now to tell me? How come you didn't tell me then and there?"
"I tried to, but you were always busy with Rufus. Or your sisters," Sassy added. Buttercup had a look of pain on her face. "I called him a jerk and told him to get lost."
"I can't believe he did that," Buttercup muttered.
"I'm sorry," Sassy apologized.
"I'll have a talk with him later on today," Buttercup said.
Later on, Buttercup called Rufus up and invited him to go to the park. When they arrived they sat on a bench.
"Rufus," she began. "Sassy told me that you hit on her that day during Spring break. Is that true?" she looked up at him. He had a look of outrage.
"What?! No!"
"Then why would she tell me that?!" she raised her voice.
"She's lying Buttercup. She's jsut jealous. She hates me, she's always hated me since we met that day. I don't know why. I think they're trying to break us apart. I don't think you should believe her. You're very beautiful and I love you. I would never cheat on you. Especially not on someone as ugly as her."
Buttercup thought back to that day when she had told Sassy that Rufus had asked her out. Sassy did have a face of disapproval. Rufus was right. They had been trying to keep them apart, even before they got together.
"You're right," she mumbled.
"Yeah. I suggest you stay away from them. They're all against us."
It was now the middle of June. Rufus was already graduated. Buttercup had completely stopped talking to Sassy. Buttercup only talked and hungout with her sisters. The charm bracelet that Butch had gotten her, disappeared off of her wrist a few days ago and when questioned, she would always reply with, "The clasp broke and I sent it in to be fixed."
Nobody decided to investigate further, since that really could have happened. But then, around two months into Senior year, something happened that riled up both Buttercup's sisters and the Lutonium sisters.
Buttercup and Rufus were at the mall, talking while eatinf in the food court.
"Hey. I'll be back. I've gotta go to the bathroom. Take care of my stuff please."
While she was there, her sisters were at home. The hotline rang and Blossom picked it up. "Hello? Yes. Ok. We're on it, Mayor," she hung up the phone. "Girls! The city's under attack! Someone call Buttercup and let's get moving!"
Back at the mall, Buttercup was still in the restroom when her phone rang. Rufus looked at the caller. No one he cared about, so he let it ring. Then her notifications rang. Rolling his eyes, he looked at the messages.
Buttercup! We need you! The city is under attack, hurry! That one was from Bubbles.
Other messages and calls followed after, but he ignored the calls and finally they stopped. Then before Buttercup got back, he deleted the texts and call log, putting it back in its original place.
"Hey," Buttercup greeted as she sat down.
"Hey," he said back. "Let's go to my house."
The next day at school Blossom, Bubbles, Bunny and the Lutonium sisters all sat at one table at lunch.
"She never went?!" Sapphire asked, eyes wide in surprise.
Blossom shook her head. "No."
"And what did you tell her when she got home?" Sassy asked.
"Well, when we got home she still wasn't there. I take it she came home later when we had already fallen asleep. Then when we woke up, she still wasn't there," Bunny explained.
"She probably woke up early and took off to school. She's been doing that a lot lately," Bubbles suggested.
"Probably," Star spoke up. "I know I saw her in class today."
All girls were silent for a moment until Syco spoke up.
"Do not worry, friends. Leave this situation to us. We will get to the bottom of this and put a stop to it," Syco said with a determined look in her eye.

There you go, Chapter 10! Ok, it's getting very close to the end. I'll probably make two more chapters. I don't know yet. Anyway, so since it's getting close to ending, I wanted to know something. I have ideas for a BoomerXBubbles, BlossomXBrick and BunnyXBuddy(OC) stories that will either be a sequel or prequel to Unexpected Love. I'm going to write how the other three PowerPuff Girls got together with their color coordinate counterparts. Which couple would you like me to do after I finish this story? Comment me your fav and I'll decide based on which one has the most votes. Like always, God bless, love you all, thanks to those who stuck with me and to the new ones and have an awesome day!
P.S.
Changed the rating to T because what will be on the next chapter might be a little heavy for some readers.
