Chapter 10:

After wandering for a while Roxas and Hayner arrived at Roxas's vine swing. He occasionally liked to hang out on it when he needed to think. "Isn't this place great?" Roxas asked.

"It is beautiful" Hayner admitted "but there's still something I don't understand" Roxas turned to look at Hayner. "You've been alive all this time, why didn't you come back to pride rock?"

"Well I…" Roxas knew he couldn't tell Hayner why he really left "needed to get out, live my own life, and I did and it was great"

"We've really needed you at home" Hayner informed him.

"Heh, no one needs me" Roxas mumbled both to Hayner and himself.

"Yes! We do! You're the king" Hayner retaliated.

"Hayner we've been through this I'm not the king, Xemnas is" Roxas shouted.

"Roxas he let the hyenas into the pridelands" Hayner told him.

"What?" Roxas whispered in surprise, his mind whirling.

"There's no food, no water, Roxas if you don't do something everyone will starve!" Hayner shouted.

"I can't go back" Roxas muttered, no longer paying attention to Hayner.

"Why not?" Hayner asked.

"You wouldn't understand" Roxas continued to ignore Hayner.

"What wouldn't I understand?" Hayner shouted,

"No, no, no, it's okay, Hakuna Mattata" Roxas tried to ease Hayner.

"What?" Hayner was taken aback by the strange words.

"Hakuna Mattata" Roxas repeated, "It's something I learned out here, look sometimes bad stuff happens"

"Roxas!" Hayner tried to interrupt.

"-And there's nothing you can do about it so why worry?" Roxas finished.

"Because it's your responsibility" Hayner answered.

"Well what about you? You left!" Roxas accused.

"I left to find help, and I found you, don't you see? You're our last hope" Hayner pleaded.

Roxas sighed "Sorry" Roxas snarled.

"What's happened to you? You're not the Roxas I remember" Hayner growled.

"You're right, I'm not, now are you satisfied?" Roxas snapped.

"No, just disappointed" Hayner mumbled.

"You know you're starting to sound like my father" Roxas noted.

"Good, at least one of us does" Hayner growled. Roxas's blood boiled and he spun around to snarl in Hayner's face. "You think you can just show up and tell me how to run my life? You don't even know what I've been through" Roxas then turned to stalk into the bushes.

"I would if you'd just tell me," Hayner pointed out.

Roxas stopped before shouting, "Forget it!"

"Fine" Hayner shouted back. Hayner's face fell "Roxas, wait!" he tried to call his friend back but the golden lion had already left.

The bushes moved again and Hayner looked up in hopes that it might be his friend only to see the rogue lion from before emerge. "Wow, you really pissed him off" the red lion chuckled.

"Shut up" Hayner snarled, "why are you even here anyways?" he asked.

"Well you see when a mommy lion and a daddy lion love each other very much…" Axel joked.

"Not that! You know what I mean," Hayner yelled angrily. How could Roxas want to hang around this guy? He was so arrogant and annoying.

"Heard some shouting, figured I'd find out what's going on," he answered "also wanted to apologize to Roxas with how I acted earlier. So he's king eh?"

Hayner growled, "he's supposed to be, I don't understand why he refuses to take responsibility"

"Did you ever think that maybe he has a good reason? I've known Roxas for a long time…" Axel tried to reason.

"So have I!" Hayner shouted, "We were childhood friends,"

"People change" Axel pointed out "when I met Roxas he was just a cub who was sad, scared, and alone"

"But why?" Hayner questioned "None of us even knew he was alive, we were told he was dead. To just see him alive again brings up a million questions. Like why he left, why he didn't come back, why Xemnas insisted his nephew was dead as well. Although no body was found, we assumed the hyenas had taken him back to their den"

Axel shrugged his shoulders in response "maybe he doesn't want you to know, he never told me anything and I respect his privacy, maybe you should do the same" Axel spun on his back paw and left the speechless brown lion behind.

Roxas paced back and forth in the field muttering about how he couldn't go back and his anger at Hayner for suggesting such a thing without knowing why he left in the first place. He looked up as he heard singing from a tree and could make out the form of a baboon. He groaned and continued to make his way through the field.

He heard the singing grow closer and could soon see the baboon in a tree nearby. "Would you knock it off?" Roxas growled.

"Can't" the female baboon giggled.

"Well then would you quit following me?" he pleaded, "Who are you?"

"The better question is who are you?" she smirked.

Roxas was about to answer when he found himself really thinking. "I thought I knew once," he mumbled.

"Well I know who you are" she exclaimed "shh come here it's a secret" she gestured for Roxas to draw closer. She leaned towards his ear and started singing nonsense once more.

"I told you to knock it off!" he snarled, "What does that even mean?"

"It means you are a baboon" she explained "and I am not"

"I think you're confused" Roxas rolled his eyes realizing he was talking to a lunatic.

"Oh no, I'm not the one who is confused, you are" she shouted, "You don't even know who you are!"

"Oh and I suppose you do?" Roxas joked.

"Of course, you're Leon's boy" she acknowledged. Roxas froze and spun around in shock. "Bye" she took off.

"Wait!" Roxas chased after her to find her sketching as she sat on a rock. Roxas peaked over her shoulder to see a picture of him "You knew my father?"

"Correction, I know your father," she corrected.

"I'm sorry to tell you this, but he died, a long time ago" Roxas grieved.

"Nope! Wrong again!" she shouted running. "He's alive, and I'll show him to you. C'mon you follow little Nami she know the way!" she waved her hand and ran into a tangled mess of jungle.

Roxas chased after her until she stopped him and gestured for him to remain silent. "Look down there" she whispered. He cautiously stepped out and moved down a rocky path to a still pond where he gazed in to see his reflection.

Roxas sighed, "That's not my father, that's just my reflection," he murmured.

"No, look closer" she whispered and lightly tapped the water as the image transformed so Roxas could see a strong brown lion. Leon. "You see? He lives in you"

Roxas suddenly heard a deep voice call his name. He moved towards it as he found himself once more in an open field and deep dark clouds rolled in, taking the shape of Leon. "Roxas you have forgotten me," the cloud lion rumbled.

"No!" Roxas shouted, "How could I?" he was distressed. Here the spirit of his father stood yet all he was there for was to reprimand the young lion on his memory?

"You have forgotten who you are, and therefore you have forgotten about me," Leon explained. "You have been running from your past for too long"

"But how can I go back, I'm not who I used to be" Roxas argued.

"Remember who you are. You are my son, and the one true king. Return and take your place in the great circle of life" he commanded. As he began to fade Roxas chased this image.

"No! Don't go! Don't leave me! Father!" he called. He couldn't lose his father again. He stopped as he realized it was no use and the sky cleared.

"What was that?" Roxas turned at the baboon's voice. "The weather! Huh, very peculiar, don't you agree?"

Roxas nodded "looks like the winds are changing" he agreed.

"Ah yes, change is good" Namine pondered.

"Yes but it's not easy," Roxas remarked "going back will mean facing my past, I've been running from it for so long I- OW!" Roxas yelled as a stick interrupted him over his head. "What did you do that for?"

"It doesn't matter, it's in the past!" Namine joked.

"Ya but it still hurts" he groaned

"Ah yes the past can hurt, but the way I see it, you can either run from it or…learn from it" she advised proceeding to swing again, but this time Roxas was ready and ducked. "Ha! You see? Now what is it you are going to do?"

"First I'm going to take your stick" Roxas snatched to wood and tossed it away.

"No, no not the stick!" she exclaimed before turning around as Roxas ran "Where are you going?"

"I'm going back!" he yelled.

"Yes, go on get out of here!" she yelled before letting out a triumphant call into the night.

As he made his way back to his den, Axel crossed an open field only to see the younger blond lion sitting in the middle of it with a forlorn expression as if he had witnessed something life changing. Before he could approach a baboon beat him to it. The baboon spouted off nonsense of crazy weather. Roxas only smiled and mentioned something about his past. To Axel's shock, the primate then whacked the young prince over the head. Axel had to hold himself back to listen in but his worries grew as he soon saw Roxas running in the opposite direction of the jungle shouting something about going back to which the baboon seemed to let out a call of victory as if she had been trying to get him to leave. But where was the younger lion going? Axel looked back at the jungle wondering if he should tell Sora and Demyx. He shook his head, there was no time he had to follow Roxas and find out where he was going.
