Chapter 9 – Closer
"Hahi! Haru has never taken a puri before!" The brunette giggled while typing on the keyboard of the photo machine. For the puri she chose a rainbow background and heart effects. "Finished! Let's start!" Her smile was brighter than ever before.
"Tch. That's silly. Another waste of money." Their 'To-Do'-list bought them to the arcade where they have to take a purikura together, the little photos which are often taken in Mangas or Animes in photo machines. Gokudera thought it was pretty weird and pointless to do the things they were ordered to. First treating the Hahi-Girl ice and then take a purikura. It's really senseless to do these things. He asked himself why Reborn-san would let them do such things. Would this be also some kind of special training? If so, then what would they achieve?
"Can't you just smile once at command for Haru, you grumpy cat!?" Haru insisted on it. She really wanted to take a great photo. Not only because it was her first puri. But also because it was with Hayato Gokudera, the one she of whom realized that he was her new love. Unlike with Tsuna this time she wanted to not go crazy about every single thing her beloved one did. She wanted to go easy on her new love and take things more slowly. She wouldn't stalk him or tell him every time she saw him how much she liked him. She'd make sure first that she had a clear chance of winning him. Therefore her first step was now to take a great puri. She grabbed the storm guardian's cheeks and tried to form them to a smile. So did he and they were too late to do a decent photo. The photo machine said "Let's smile!" and shot a picture before they could react to it.
"Awww Gokudera-kun, you ruined my first puri!" She sulked when she looked at the weird faces they made for the small picture.
"It's also my first purikura which is ruined, so don't be sad, ya not alone." Gokudera said jokingly patting her head without realizing how important it was for her.
"To Haru it's more special than to you! Feel honored to have your first puri taken with Haru!"
"Fine, I am. Stop sulking now. Isn't that better than a half-assed normal picture? I think it's a funny memory for us." Haru was surprised by his cheerful grin and didn't mind at all that he messed up her hair.
"Pfft!" She was so delighted to see him having fun around her that she just had to laugh along with the joy he bought with his slightly awkward smile.
"What?" The smoking bomb of Vogola was surprised by her reaction. Kind of confused and irritated he messed even more with her hair. He had never realized how soft and silky it was. When he sensed a faint cherry smell of shampoo the color his cheeks turned into a cherry shade of red. "Why're you suddenly laughing at me?"
"That's a rare sight to see Gokudera-kun smile! But you did often today." He stopped making a nest of Haru's hair unable to think of what to say while feeling a little embarrassed.
"Would you r- rather want to see me grumping all the time?"
"No! Haru think it's great to see you that way. You have a kind smile so why wouldn't you smile for Haru on our puri?"
"Tch! Stop talking bullshit! A great Mafioso like me isn't kind especially not on purikuras." He crossed his arms in front of his chest while pouting like a little child.
"Why can't you be kind and a great Mafioso like Tsuna-kun? Being kind makes people around you and yourself happier!" Hayato Gokudera has always wondered why he always denied everything she said to him though she might have been right all the time. And because they're so much of blockheads neither of them would give in. the discussion continues endlessly with futile arguments and pointless anger. Could it be that he enjoyed talking to her, hearing her voice so much that he just wouldn't want to stop her talking? Seeing her angry pouting face, her agitated vivid gestures. It was just someway fun and kinda cute. When will he be able to talk the truth he asked himself. Will they keep on fighting like this all their lives long? Did he want that? He believed he desired more. He gave in and took her hand tightly but in a gentle way…
Suddenly a stomach growled. "Hahi! How embarrassing… Haru's hungry though we ate ice together."
"Ice doesn't fill your stomach. It's just frozen milk with some kind of flavor." He pulled her out of the game center towards a nice place to eat that he knows.
"Where are we heading?"
"Someplace with good food." Gokudera grinned in confidence that Haru will like the place he chose.
When they were about to turn left into the street where Gokudera's favorite restaurant was someone suddenly grabbed him and dragged the two of them away. "Huh?" That's the only think the storm guardian's voice could bring out before he found himself sitting in a certain Sushi bar.
"Hahi!" The brunette was also surprised by the sudden change of place. But it didn't really matter to her where to eat. She liked the food Takesushi made.
"Oh Gokudera and Haru-chan! What a coincidence to see you here!" Yamamoto Takeshi the rain guardian stood beside their table and welcomed them with his wide natural grin. Gokudera could see a few tables behind them there were Ryouhei und Tsuna in bad disguises.
"Don't gimme that! You guys dragged us out of our way in here."
"What do you mean, Gokudera?" Takeshi said acting innocent. Gokudera was about to riot. Not only did they obviously make Haru und him do unnecessary things but they also get in their way. He was utterly annoyed by the whole plan whose purpose he didn't fully understand yet. Not that he mind spending time with Haru but still he hated not knowing what's going on and his friends and even the boss having some kind of secret behind his back.
Haru could sense Gokudera's irritation and tried to calm him down. "My, my, Haru sees no problem here. Haru likes the Sushi Yamamoto-kun prepares. We can also eat here."
"Tch. If you're fine with it." The silver haired guy supported his head on his knuckles and averted her eyes.
"Haru'll have the usual Yamamoto-kun!" Haru ordered in her usual cheerfulness.
"Alright, Haru's usual! And you?" He looked at Gokudera who didn't seem to be in such a great mood.
"I'll just have a normal plate of sushi." He said normally after thinking in what kind of tone he should speak to the baseball freak.
"Then I'm gonna prepare everything just wait a bit." Takeshi drew something on his note then disappeared into the kitchen.
After a little time of awkward silence and few bites of sushi in which none of them knew what to say Gokudera finally opened his mouth and took a deep breath. "How often do you come here to have 'a usual' here?"
"Uhm…" Haru swallowed the sashimi and thought a little. "I guess quite often." She asked herself why he would bother to ask her that. He normally didn't ask unnecessary questions. But maybe he's just trying to small talk or something like that because he didn't like the silence? "Why you ask?"
"Just… curious…" Or not… rather than being curious he didn't like the thought of Haru spending lots of time here especially because the baseball idiot was always here. It made him irritated. He hated it. A weird uneasy feeling crept through his whole body. He already knew that he kinda liked the girl sitting in front of him and he could already anticipate that the weird feeling was jealousy but he could never admit it. There's no way that the strong right-hand man of decimo could give in to some oppressive feelings. He must keep his cool he always told himself in the past, now and certainly even in the future. But at the moment it seemed impossible. He quickly gulped the rest of his food and put the payment. "Here's the pay. Eat up so that we can go."
"Ha-" Haru couldn't find a word to say. "-i…" She wondered what's wrong with him he gave off such a cold and angry aura that it scared her a little. No matter how much she thought about it she often didn't understand him. Well, he is kind of complex and incomprehensive though she had the feeling she understood him better bit by bit. But right now she couldn't guess what's on his mind.
A few tables behind Haru Tsuna was pretty worried about the situation. "Onii-san! Something's going on there. Maybe we shouldn't have done that. I've got a bad feeling."
"It's extreeemly tense there! I can feel it to the extreme!" Ryouhei tried to whisper.
"Yeah, we should have left them alone. Why did Reborn-san plan such a prank?" The tenth Vongola Boss rumpled his hair in despair. "What can we do?"
"How was it, Goku-chan?" Yamamoto came to take away the dishes.
"Tzz." That's all the stormy storm guardian could say. He couldn't find a way to insult the baseball idiot without him notice that he was insulted. In his head he went through lots of names to call him but neither of them were spoken. So he acted like a kid and ignored him.
"It was delicious like always, Yamamoto-kun!" the always so cheerful girl tried to light up the uncomfortable situation they were in. But she just had to let out a small sigh while Yamamoto couldn't help but chuckle. Despite his appearance he can be quite smart. He quite understood why Gokudera acted this way.
"I'm glad you liked it. I gave my very best to make it especially tasty for you, Haru-chan." The octopus-head snapped. Since he noticed it earlier but know it made him mad. Since when has he been calling her Haru-chan. He couldn't even bring himself that easily to call her by her first name. And he! He could speak it out so easily. Since when and why did they go back to calling each other Gokudera-kun and Stupid woman? They were about to grow closer by calling each other's first names. Not only that, but Yamamoto had a little sadistic features. So he threw one bomb after another. "I like the way you smile when you eat my sushi."
"Hahi… stop it or else Haru will get flustered." She blushed a little without knowing that it caused quite an effect.
"Hahaha! I never noticed but you're pretty cute when you blush Haru-chan." Takeshi was amused by Goku-chan's troubled face but he felt like he should stop or else he would find himself stepping on a landmine. "Well, have a nice day. I'm gonna wash ya dishes."
"Ehh... my share!" Haru burrowed in her purse until the rain guardian gently put his hand on hers to gesticulate that it wouldn't be needed.
"Goku-chan's pay is already enough for both of yours." He grinned at them and then disappeared behind in the kitchen.
"Let's go now. I don't want to stay here much longer than needed." The jealous guy pulled his beloved one out of the TakeSushi as fast as he could. The always cheerful and smiling idiot really irritated him but he didn't want to actually show his anger though it was clearly visible and he couldn't control it much longer.
She couldn't keep up with his fast walk and the handcuffs around her wrist became painful. "Ha- Hahi! Gokudera-kun it hu-"
"CALL ME HAYATO, HARU!" He burst out with a lot of rage in his voice.
"H-Hayato… please slow down, you're hurting Haru…" She half says and half whispers awed. There's really something on his mind. She didn't know what nor could she bring herself to ask him. His yell really made her feel uneasy.
He felt how her hand trembled through the chains of the handcuffs. He knew that wasn't right. But he couldn't help it. The strong and cold storm guardian of Vongola so shaken by his own emotions he couldn't find another way to express himself. "Sorry Haru… I- somehow… I don't know. Sorry."
He was surprised when he felt the sensation of her tiny soft hand entwine his. The warmth and the caring hand of hers calmed him.
"It's okay." Haru said getting her cheerfulness back. Although she was scared when she suddenly heard his loud angry voice shouting at her she knew he wouldn't do a thing to hurt her. That's why she trusts him. And she felt really happy that he just wanted to express that he insisted on calling each other by the first name. It's sort of cute, isn't it? "It's okay! So let's finish so that we can go home."
