Chapter Eight: The Poison Sky: Part 1
"He's gonna choke! Rose!" Donna shrieked as she tried to open the car door.
Rose slid underneath the car to try to turn off the ATMOS. "It won't open!" she shouted.
That was when footsteps were heard and Rose turned her head to see Sylvia rushing towards them, holding an axe and smashed the windscreen.
"Well don't just stand there. Get him out!" Sylvia said to Donna who broke out of her trance of seeing her mother with and axe and moved to help her granddad out with The Master's help.
The three of them began to move their way towards the house with Rose and Sylvia behind them.
"Thanks," Wilf muttered as he tried to breathe normally.
Donna turned to look at her mother. "I can't believe you used an axe."
Sylvia shrugged. "Burglars!" she replied.
"Get him inside. Lock all the doors and windows," Rose said as she looked around her.
She heard the squeal of tires and saw Ross in a black cab.
"Miss Tyler, this was all I could find without ATMOS in it," Ross shouted.
Rose and The Master ran to the car and got in, Rose held the door open for Donna.
"Oi, Fire Head, you coming or what?" The Master asked, sounding annoyed.
Donna turned back. "Yeah!" she replied.
Sylvia crabbed her daughter's arm. "Donna! Don't go! Look what happens every time that Rose appears! Stay with us, please."
"You go my darling!" Wilf interrupted.
Sylvia turned to her dad in shock. "Dad!"
Wilf smiled at Donna. "Don't listen to her! You go with Rose and The Master! That's my girl!"
Donna ran to the cab and got in, putting on her seatbelt as she stared guiltily at her family. Martha's words came back to her mind. What would happen to her family when she's gone?
….
Ross got to the ATMOS factory in record time and stopped. Rose leaped out and held the door opened for The Master and Donna who started to cough.
Rose turned to Ross. "Look after yourself inside that building."
Ross nodded. "Will do," he replied before he talked into his radio as Rose, Donna and The Master walked towards the Tardis
"The air is disgusting," Donna said, coughing.
Rose frowned. "I can't tell," she admitted before turning to The Master. "Is it a Time Lord thing?"
The Master smirked. "Better biology than apes."
Rose glared at him. "You must've forget that I was human too," she pointed out and The Master shrugged in replied.
Rose turned to Donna. "Get inside the Tardis. Here you go," she said and handed Donna a silver key. "TARDIS key. You're a permanent companion now. Big moment really, but since your choking, lets get all sentimental later?"
Donna nodded, coughing. "Good idea. But where are you going?" she asked.
Rose looked graved. "To stop a oncoming war. Master, stay with her."
As Rose ran off, The Master sighed and opened the Tardis doors.
"You coming Fire Head?"
….
Rose opened the door of the UNIT portable office and walked up to Colonel Mace.
"Okay I'm here. Do not, and I mean do not engage the Sontarans in a battle. They love bloodshed. Leave it to me," she said to Colonel Mace.
Colonel Mace frowned. "And what are you going to do Miss Tyler?"
Rose smirked grimy. "I've got the Tardis. I'll get aboard their ship in no time," she said quietly. That was when she spotted Martha sitting at the edge on the controls and walked up to her.
"Come on," she hissed and they walked out.
….
The pair ran to the alley where the Tardis was…. Only to find that it was missing.
Martha frowned. "But where's the Tardis?" she asked, sounding upset.
Rose bit her lip. "The Sontarans must've taken it. I'm stuck on Earth… again. Brilliant!"
"So what do we do?" Martha asked.
Rose sighed. "Well… a ship wouldn't detect it…" she trailed off and looked at Martha, narrowing her eyes with growing suspicion. She had a feeling that this wasn't Martha Jones.
Martha noticed her stare. "What?" she snapped.
"Have you told your family and Tom?" Rose asked.
Martha looked confused. "No, what for?"
Rose raised an eyebrow. "The gas? It isn't safe outside…" her suspicion became clear. This clearly wasn't Martha. The Martha she knew would do anything to protect her family, no matter the cost.
Martha scoffed and nodded. "Course I will, yeah, but what about Donna I mean, where's she?"
Rose sucked in a deep breath. "She's gone home. She's not like you. She's not a soldier," she growled and the gleeful look on Martha's face killed Rose in many ways. She had to find a way to get the real Martha back.
….
Meanwhile, in another world, The Doctor was working endlessly to connect a transmission to the Earth he knew and loved with both of his hearts. Most importantly he wanted to get back to Rose.
Footsteps were heard and then a frustrating sigh.
"Boss…. What are you doing?" Mickey asked.
The Doctor turned and grinned. "Mr Mickey! I'm getting through!"
Mickey's eyes widened. "You mean… we can talk to Rose? Warn her what's going on?"
The Doctor nodded. "Got it in one. Alonzy!"
….
"Change of plans!" Rose shouted as she and the clone Martha walked inside UNIT base.
Colonel Mace turned to Rose. "Ah, Miss Tyler. Good to have you fighting along side us."
Rose rolled her eyes. "I'm not fighting. Has anyone figured out what's inside the gas yet?"
"We're working on it," Clone Martha replied as she sat down at a computer.
"It's harmful, but not lethal until it reaches 80% density. We're having the first reports of deaths from the center of Tokyo City," a female soldier reported.
Rose frowned as she examined the readings. "… And who are you?"
The soldier stood up and saluted. "Captain Marion Price, Ma'am."
Rose huffed. "Seriously, why do people salute?" she asked rudely which made Marion put her hand down slowly.
"Jodrell Bank's traced a signal, Doctor, coming from 5000 miles above the Earth. We're guessing that's what triggered the car," Colonel Mace added.
Rose sighed. "It's the Sontaran ship."
"NATO has gone to Defcon One, we're preparing a strike," Colonel Mace said.
Rose shook her head. "You can't do that. They won't even scratch the surface of the bloody ship. Let me talk to the Sontarans."
"You don't have the authority to speak on behalf of the Earth."
Rose rolled her eyes. "Well, The Doctor isn't here to do it, so I'll have to. And besides, I spoke on behalf of the Earth two years ago when Harriet Jones couldn't. I can do it again," she hissed as she used her sonic on the controls and stared at the mega television. "Calling the Sontaran Command Ship under Jurisdiction Two of the Intergalactic Rules of Engagement. This is The Wolf," she said in a clear voice.
….
The Master and Donna turned when they heard Rose's voice and Donna missed seeing The Doctor on the screen, but The Master didn't. The Doctor was trapped. How could his face come through the transmission?
"Rose! We're here! Can you hear us?" Donna shouted as Rose's face came through.
….
"NO!" The Doctor shouted and groaned.
Mickey looked confused. "What happened?"
The Doctor ran a hand through his sticky up hair. "Rose wasn't in the Tardis. But someone I knew was. How is he still alive and what's Rose doing with him?" he muttered.
"Um boss… who are you talking about?"
The Doctor sighed. "My… well he was once time best friend turned to rival and started to take over worlds. He's a Time Lord. A crazy one. Then again, we were all crazy in the end."
"But you said that there wasn't any Time Lords anymore," Mickey pointed out.
The Doctor started to pace. "Obviously he survived. I need to try to get the connection even longer…."
….
"Ah, Wolf. Breathing your last?" General Stall asked.
Colonel Mace's eyes widened in shock. "My God. They're like… trolls…" he stuttered.
Rose rolled her eyes. "Loving your definition of diplomacy. Thanks for that," she muttered before she walked to a chair and sat down. "So tell me General Stall… since when did Sontarans became cowards?" she asked as she rested her feet on the controls.
"And that's diplomacy?" Colonel Mace asked sarcastically.
General Stall stood straight. "Wolf, you impugn my honour!"
Rose snorted. "If you said belittle, I would've a had a field day with that one. But seriously… poison gas? That's the weapon of a coward. Stall… you can blast this planet out of the sky but you're sitting up above, taking sips of tea and watching the people die. Where's the fight in that? Or are you lot up to something else?"
"A general would be unwise to reveal his strategy to the opposing forces," General Stall replied stiffly.
Rose laughed with a grin. "I'm guessing you're losing the war then?"
"Such a suggestion is impossible."
Colonel Mace frowned. "What war?" he asked, confused.
Rose's expression turned to anger. "The war between the Sontarans and the Rutans. It's been going on in the universe for over fifty thousand years. Centuries of bloodshed and what for?" she asked General Stall.
General Stall stood straight and looked proud. "For victory. Sontar-ha! Sontar-ha! Sontar-ha! Sontar-ha!"
The other Sontarans started to chant as well, which made the UNIT soldiers in the room nervous and Rose rolled her eyes.
"Honestly… give me a break," she sighed as she used her sonic to change the screen to a kids program and looked bored.
"Miss Tyler, I would seriously recommend that this dialogue is handled by official Earth representation," Colonel Mace interrupted.
Rose turned the screen back to the connection of the Sontarans and gave them a look.
"Finished yet? Or can I watch an episode of Scooby Doo?" she asked sarcastically.
"You will not be so quick to ridicule when you'll see our prize. Behold," General Stall said as they showed the TARDIS on board their ship. "We are the first Sontarans in history to capture a TARDIS."
Rose leaned forward with a frown. "Well, as prizes go, that's very…noble of you. Masterful even," she said, trying to capture Donna's and The Master's attention who were just staring at the screen. "But, Did you never wonder about its design? It's phone box. It contains a phone. You know, when people ring each other to speak instead of a face to face conversation. Like if only we could communicate. You and I."
"All you have communicated is your distress, Wolf."
Rose grinned. "Big mistake you just made. Cause I got an remote control," she said, holding up her sonic screwdriver.
General Stall looked scared. "Cease transmission!"
The screen went black.
….
Rose walked up to the fake Martha and snatched the results and scanned through them. The clone Martha looked a bit put off before she turned to Rose.
"There's carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides but 10% unidentified. Some sort of artificial heavy element we can't trace. You ever seen anything like it?" she asked.
Rose sighed. "No, I'm not The Doctor. Has to be something the Sontarans invented. It can't be just gas. It has to be something else."
"Like what?" the Martha clone asked.
Colonel Mace interrupted them. "Positions ladies and gentlemen, Defcon One initiatives in progress."
Rose snapped her head towards him. "What? Are you an idiot? I told you not to launch!"
Colonel Mace frowned. "The gas is at 60% density, 80% and people start dying, Miss Tyler. We've got no choice."
Rose huffed. "For once in my life, I hope the Sontarans are one step ahead of you," she muttered.
"North America, online. United Kingdom, online. France, online. India, online. Pakistan, online. China, online. North Korea, online. All systems locked and coordinated. Launching in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5..." Captain Price was counting down.
"God save us," Colonel Mace muttered.
"4, 3, 2, 1…" the screen suddenly went blank.
Colonel Mace frowned in confusion. "What is it? What happened? Did we launch? Well, did we?" he asked, firing questions.
Captain Price shook her head. "Negative, sir. The launch codes have been wiped, sir. It must be the Sontarans."
"Can we override it?" Colonel Mace asked.
"Trying it now sir."
Rose sighed. "The missiles wouldn't even dent their bloody ship, so why are the Sontarans so keen to stop you?" she said to herself before turning to clone Martha. "Any ideas?"
Martha frowned. "How should I know?" she asked defensively.
